I want to be a teacher just like you  how did you become a great teacher

쉽지는 않았지만 내가 대학을 어떻게 졸업하게 되었는지

but I think it's important you know this  story how I got to graduate from college

이 이야기를 아는 것이 중요하다고 생각합니다.

well it all began when I was at the high school  the last year to be exact ly I was not sure about  

모든 것은 제가 고등학교에 다닐 때부터 시작되었습니다. 정확히 말하면 작년에 저는

what I wanted to study then I mean what career  to study so I decided not to study for the moment

무엇을 공부하고 싶은지 확신이 없었습니다. 무슨 직업을 공부하란 말인가 그래서 일단은 공부하지 않기로 했어

I started working hard to save money so I kind  of study a professional career later I had a  

돈을 아끼기 위해 열심히 일했기 때문에 나중에 전문적인 공부를 하려고 했어 난

lot of different jobs son I was a carpenter  an assistant a bricklayer a seller a waiter

다양한 직업을 가졌어 아들 난 목수 조수 벽돌공 판매자 웨이터

well I had to work hard for some  years but unluckily I couldn't  

글쎄요, 몇 년 동안 열심히 일해야 했지만 불행하게도

save enough money to start studying  it was not easy I had to work all  

공부를 시작할 만큼 충분한 돈을 저축할 수 없었습니다.

day to pay the rent wood and many other  different things because I lived alone  

혼자 살았기 때문에 집세를 내고 다른 여러 가지 일을 하기 위해 하루 종일 일해야 하는 것이 쉽지 않았습니다.

but one day that changed I was spending too much  time working and I could never save any money  

그런데 어느 날 갑자기 달라졌습니다. 일하는 데 너무 많은 시간을 보내고 있었고 돈을 전혀 저축할 수 없었습니다.

I had studied in an Institute I studied  English and then I started teaching English

학원에서 공부했습니다. 영어를 공부한 다음 영어를 가르치기 시작했지만

but my salary was not so good I didn't  earn enough to pay the University  

월급이 좋지 않아 대학에 지불할 만큼 벌지 못했습니다.

but one day I decided I was going to start  no matter what and maybe you're asking how

그런데 어느 날 무슨 일이 있어도 시작하기로 결정했고 어쩌면

well I didn't even know how I went to the  admission office and asked for information  

내가 어떻게 입학처에 가서 정보를 요청했는지조차 몰랐는지 물어볼 수도 있습니다.

about a career they gave me all the  information it was not cheap at all

경력에 대한 모든 정보를 제공받았습니다. 전혀 저렴하지 않았습니다.

I still didn't know how I was  going to pay for my studies  

여전히 학비를 어떻게 지불해야 할지 몰랐지만

but I took the exam anyway I mean  the University admission test  

어쨌든 시험을 쳤어요. 내 말은 대학 입학 시험을 의미합니다.

I passed that test and I got a vacancy I was so  happy even when I didn't know how I would pay

그 시험에 합격하고 공석이 생겼어요. 어떻게 지불할지 몰라도 너무 행복했어요

Oh but before that I forgot to tell you  before I took my exam I told you I want  

아 그런데 그 전에 깜빡했네요 시험 보기 전에 정보 좀 여쭤보고 싶다고 말씀드렸는데

to ask for information well there was a woman  who interviewed me to know my scale of payments

제 급여 규모를 알고 싶어서 인터뷰하는 여자 분이 계셨어요 어디서 사시는지

she asked me a lot of questions questions like  where do you live what do you do for a living  

같은 질문을 많이 하더군요 당신은 무엇을 하시나요?

who are your parents what are your plans  for the future how much do you earn a month

부모님은 무엇입니까? 미래에 대한 계획은 무엇입니까? 한 달에 얼마를 벌나요? 저는

you know I come from a poor City my parents  are poor and we went through difficult times  

가난한 도시에서 왔습니다. 부모님은 가난해서 힘든 시간을 보냈습니다.

I explained that to the woman who was  interviewing me she was a psychologist

그 사실을 그 여성에게 설명했습니다. 저를 인터뷰하던 중 그녀는 심리학자였는데

and then she told me something that was  going to change the course of my life  

제 인생의 방향을 바꿀 뭔가를 말하더군요.

she told me you shouldn't study at this University  

이 대학에서 공부하면 안 된다고 하더군요.

you are poor and you don't earn enough  money you should go to a public university

당신은 가난하고 돈도 충분히 벌지 못해서 대학에 가야 한다고 하더군요. 공립대학교

I was like I didn't know what to answer she  continued you better go to a public university  

무슨 대답을 해야 할지 모르겠다고 하더군요. 계속해서 공립대학교에 가는 게 좋을 것 같아요.

because you won't be able to pay for this one  you will have a lot of problems you can't do it

이 대학은 돈을 낼 수 없기 때문에 문제가 많이 생길 거에요. 할 수 없을 거에요.

I was shocked by what she had told me I always  wanted to go to that University because I knew  

충격받았어요 그녀가 나에게 말한 대로 나는 항상 그 대학에 가고 싶었습니다. 왜냐하면

it was one of the best in the country of course it  was not cheap but I wanted to study there anyway

그 대학이 국내 최고 중 하나라는 것을 알았기 때문입니다. 물론 싸지는 않았지만 어쨌든 그곳에서 공부하고 싶었고

and when she said you can't do it I felt terrible  I felt that all my dreams were collapsing  

그녀가 당신은 할 수 없다고 말했을 때 나는 정말 끔찍했어요 내 모든 꿈이 무너지는 것 같았어요

that day I went to my apartment and I was thinking  about what she had told me I was so depressed

그날 아파트에 가서 그녀가 나에게 했던 말을 생각하고 있었어요. 너무 우울했지만 그녀가 나한테는 갈 수 없다고 해서

but then I got angry just because she told me  I couldn't I wasn't going to listen to her am  

화를 냈어요 나는 가지 않을 거예요 그녀의 말을 듣기 위해

I right well the next day I went back  to the office and paid to take my test

나는 바로 다음 날 시험에 합격하기 전에 말씀드린 대로 사무실로 돌아가서 돈을 내고 시험을 치렀습니다.

as I told you before I passed the test and I was  in I was very happy but I still didn't know how I  

매우 기뻤지만 여전히 내 상태가 어떠했는지는 잘 모르겠습니다.

was going to pay for the University I think that  psychologists motivated me to take that decision

대학 등록금을 지불할 예정이에요 심리학자들이 제가 그 결정을 내리도록 동기를 부여한 것 같아요.

yeah I mean she told me I couldn't do it and  I didn't like what she said so I did it I know  

예, 그녀는 제가 할 수 없다고 말했고 그녀가 말한 것이 마음에 들지 않아서 그렇게 했습니다. 알아요   말도

I know I know that sounds crazy but it really  happened that's how my professional life started

안 되는 소리인 줄 알아요 그런데 정말 그런 일이 일어나서 내 직업 생활이 행복하게 시작됐어요. 몇 달 전에

happily I had a credit card the bank had given  to me some months before so I asked for a loan  

은행에서 준 신용카드가 있어서 대출을 요청했는데

and they gave it to me that's how I could pay  the University but it was a lot of money anyway

그걸 줘서 대학 등록금을 갚을 수 있었는데 돈이 많이 들었어요. 어차피

the money I earned every month wasn't enough  by my second year of college I already owed  

매달 벌어들인 돈이 부족해서 대학교 2학년 때 이미

the bank a lot of money so I have to find a  solution otherwise I couldn't continue studying

은행에 빚이 많아서 해결책을 찾아야 했고, 그렇지 않으면 공부를 계속할 수 없었기 때문에

I investigated a lot to find a solution  then I find out that the University was  

해결책을 찾기 위해 많은 조사를 하다가 알고 보니 대학에서

given a scholarship but this scholarship was  only for the best students in the University  

장학금을 받았지만 이 장학금은  그 대학교에서 가장 우수한 학생에게만 해당되는 것이었습니다

Anna was not the best in fact

사실

when I was at the school I failed maths many times  and I had to go to the summer school to fix it  

제가 학교에 다닐 당시 Anna는 최고가 아니었습니다. 저는 수학에 여러 번 낙제했고 여름 학교에 가야만 했습니다. 고쳐야 했어

I was not a good student but I had to do it this  time I had no option I had to be the best student

좋은 학생은 아니었는데 이번에는 해야 했어 어쩔 수가 없었어

if I wanted to continue studying I had to  become the best student and have high grades  

공부를 계속하려면 최고의 학생이 되어야 했고 성적도 높아야 했어

it was not easy but I had to do it anyway so I  decided to work really hard to reach that goal

쉽지 않았어 하지만 난 어쨌든 해야 했기 때문에 그 목표를 달성하기 위해 정말 열심히 일하기로 결심했고,

and you know what the worst thing was that I had  to be the best student and work at the same time  

가장 최악인 것은 최고의 학생이면서 동시에 일해야 한다는 것이었습니다.

yeah I had to keep working as a teacher to pay  the university the bank loan and all my stuff

네, 월급을 주기 위해 계속 교사로 일해야 했습니다. 대학 은행 대출과 모든 일들

I spent a lot of nights studying hard sometimes  I didn't sleep because I had an important exam  

밤을 새워 공부도 열심히 했어 가끔 중요한 시험이 있어서 잠을 못 잤어

the next morning I had to get a perfect score if  I wanted to get that scholarship it was not easy

다음날 아침에 만점을 받아야 했어 장학금을 받으려면 쉽지 않았어

I didn't eat well remember I lived alone and most  

잘 못 먹었던 기억이 나는데 혼자 살았고 대부분 몸에

of the times I didn't have enough  time to cook some healthy food  

좋은 음식을 요리할 시간이 부족해서

so I sometimes just fry something to it  or ordered something to eat for delivery

가끔 튀기거나 배달시켜 먹곤 했는데

but all those efforts one day ped off seriously  I worked hard and I became the best student in  

어느 날 그 모든 노력이 수포로 돌아갔다. 나는 열심히 일하여 대학에서 최고의 학생이 되었습니다.

the University I got the scholarship even  when I had always been the worst student

나는 항상 최악의 학생이었음에도 불구하고 장학금을 받았습니다.

can you believe it I graduated  from University and now here I am  

믿을 수 있습니까? 나는 대학을 졸업하고 지금 여기에 있습니다.

I am a licensed English teacher I earn enough  money to pay the rent and everything I'm so happy

나는 자격증을 갖춘 영어 교사입니다. 지불할 만큼 충분한 돈을 벌고 있습니다. 집세와 모든 것이 너무 행복해요.

I just want to tell you that if you want  something to happen don't just wait for it  

무슨 일이 일어나길 원한다면 그냥 기다리지 말고 무엇이든 하세요. 무엇이든 하려고

to happen do something about it whatever but  try to do something you can do it I trust you

노력하세요. 할 수 있는 일을 해보세요.
