Have better conversations using the FORD method

So, in this video I'm going to teach you about how to become better at conversation with a technique.

We call the technique "F-O-R-D" or "FORD".

نحن ندعو هذا التكنيك "ف-و-ر-د" او فورد

This technique will really help you if you're shy, if when you meet people for the first

time you don't know what to say, if you feel very uncomfortable at parties or in meetings

This is a great technique.

Even if you're amazing at socializing, this video can still really help you even improve

more than what you already can do.

Okay, so the first thing I want to talk about is we use FORD as a way of small talk.

So, what is small talk?

Small talk is the type of conversation we have with people we don't know well or strangers.

الحديث المصغر هو نوع من المحادثة التي نجريها مع اشخاص لا نعرفهم او غرباء

So, you might make small talk with your neighbours, you might make small talk with your boss,

اذا عليك ان تجري محادثة مع جارك، عليك ان تجري محادثة مع مديرك

with your colleagues, maybe if you're, you know, going to a coffee shop you might make

مع الزملاء، ربما اذا كنت تعرفهم، تذهب الى المقهى عليك ان تجري

small talk with the store clerk.

So, you make small talk with people you don't know well and it's just a way to make people

feel comfortable in conversation and to create a connection with people.

A lot of conversation is small talk.

كثير من المحادثات صغيرة

If anyone has ever talked to you about the weather, sports, you know, all sorts of different

topics - these are usually small talk topics.

So, again, you might make small talk at parties, in elevators, at meetings, even if you're

taking English classes you will probably make small talk there as well.

So, how do we get good at small talk?

What do we talk about when we don't know what to talk about?

مالذي يجب ان نتحدث عنه عندما لانعلم حول ماذا نتحدث؟

Well, that's where FORD comes in.

حسنا، ها قد جاءت فورد

FORD is a technique which will help you know what to talk about when you really have no idea.

فورد تقنية تساعدك لتعرف بماذا تتحدث عندما لاتكون لديك فكرة بحق

So maybe this has been you before.

اذا، يجب ان تمتلكها مسبقا

Okay? Maybe this is you: "What should I talk about? Ah."

ربما هذا انت: "ماذا يجب علي ان اتحدث؟ آآآآآه."

Or, you know, maybe it's just a bunch of question marks.

"I don't know what to say."

It's totally silent. It's awkward.

So, how can we fix this situation?

Well, FORD stands for four things.

"F" stands for "family".

You can talk about family, and I'm going to give you some great questions you can use

to ask about somebody's family.

للسؤال عن عائلة شخص ما

"O" stands for "occupation" or job.

"و" تعتمد على "المهنة" او العمل

I'm going to give you some great questions about occupation that you can ask somebody

ساعطيك بعض الاسئلة العظيمة حول االمهنة بامكانك ان تسألها لشخص ما

you don't know well to keep the conversation going.

لاتعرفه جيدا للمحافظة على استمرار المحادثة

"R" stands for "recreation", this is like hobbies, sports, movies, Netflix, TV. Okay?

"ر" تعتمد على "الترفيه" انها تشبه الهوايات ،تسلية، رياضة، الافلام، نت فليكس، تلفزيون، تمام؟

So I'm going to give you some great questions for hobbies or recreation.

اذا ساعطيك بعض الاسئلة العظيمة للهوايات اوالترفيه

And finally, "D" stands for "dreams".

واخيرا "د" تعتمد على الاحلام

This is when you ask somebody about their future goals or, you know, something they

هذه عندما تسأل شخص ما انت تعرفه عن اهدافه المستقبلية او كما تعلم اشياء

want to do.

This does not...

Dreams does not mean when you go to sleep, if you have some weird dream and you share

it with somebody.

I'm not talking about that.

I'm talking about your dreams in life.

What are your goals?

Okay?

So using the FORD technique will make you better at small talk.

اذا استعمل تقنية فورد ستجعلك افضل في المحادثات الصغيرة

So, now let's look at some specific questions you can ask when you're socializing with somebody

اذا، الان دعنا ننظر لبعض الاسئلة المحددة التي تستطيع ان تسألها عندما تخالط احد ما

who you don't know that well.

Okay, so again, the "F" in FORD stands for "family".

Family is a great thing to talk about, but remember to keep it light and easy.

العائلة شيء عظيم لنتحدث عنه، لكن تذكر علي ان تحافظ على السهولة

You want to talk about things people are comfortable with.

انت تريد ان تتحدث عن اشياء يرتاح لها الناس

So don't ask them any private questions, you know, like:

اذا لاتسألهم اي اسئلة خاصة تعلم مثل

"Oh, is it true so-and-so cheated on so-and-so?"

"آوه، هل صحيح ان كذا وكذا خدع كا وكذا؟

No, no, no. Keep it light, simple, and easy.

لا، لا، لا، حافظ عليها مرحة وغير معقدة وبسيطة

And also share about your own family, too.

و ايضا شارك عن عائلتك الخاصة بك

Okay?

That's also very important.

ذلك مهم ايضا

You don't want to sound like the FBI interrogating somebody.

انت لاتريد ان تبدو كعميل ال"FBI" يستجوب شخص ما

You want to have a conversation, so each time they say something, you can say something

انت تريد ان تجري محادثة، اذا كل مرة هم يقولون شيئا بامكانك قول شيء ما

about yourself.

عن نفسك

So keep it kind of balanced.

حافظ على نوع من التوازن

Okay, so one easy question you can talk about: "Where are you from originally?"

حسنا، احد الاسئلة السهلة بامكانك التحدث عن "من اين انت في الاصل؟"

Okay? "Where are you from?

حسنا، من اين انت؟

Are you from Toronto?

هل انت من تورنتو؟

Are you from Tokyo?

هل انت من طوكيو؟

Are you from Istanbul?

هل انت من اسطنبول؟

Where are you from?"

من اين انت؟

This question is great because you can really talk about the difference between your cities

هذا سؤال عظيم لانه يمكنك من محادثة مختلفة عن مدينتك

and, you know, maybe some of your experiences growing up.

ومدينة من تعرفه، ربما بعض الخبرات والتجارب تنمو

Similarly: "Where did you grow up?"

وبالمثل "اين ترعرت؟

A lot of people have moved a lot, so maybe they were born in this city, then they moved

كثير من الناس تنقلوا كثيرا، اذا ربما كانوا قد ولدوا في هذه المدينة، بعدها غادروها

to Mexico, and then they moved here.

الى المكسيك، و بعدها انتقلوا الى هنا

So that's also another interesting question.

"Do you still have family there?

هل لازالت لديك عائلة هناك؟

Do you still have family in Tokyo?

لازالت لديك عائلة في طوكيو؟

Do you still have family in Istanbul?"

لازالت لديك عائلة في اسطنبول؟

Okay?

"How did you meet your boyfriend?", "How did you meet your girlfriend?",

كيف قابلتي صديقك؟ كيف قابلت صديقتك؟

"How did you meet your husband/your wife/your partner?"

كيف قالبتي زوجك؟زورجتك؟ شريكك؟

Okay? Even your friend.

تمام؟ حتى اصدقائك

So this is a great question because it makes the other person tell a story.

اذا هذا سؤل عظيم لانه يجعلك الشخص الاخر يخبر قصة

You know, and usually the stories are quite interesting.

كما تعلم، عادة القصص ممتعة جدا

You know, so this will make the conversation a bit longer which is good.

كما تعلم، اذا هذه ستجعل المحادثة تكون اطول وافضل

"Do you have any brothers or sisters?",

هل لديك اي اخوة او اخوات؟

"Do you come from a big family or a small family?"

هل قدمت من عائلة كبيرة ام من عائلة صغيرة؟

Okay?

تمام؟

This is a great opener, because then people can talk about their cousins, their aunts,

هذا باب جيد، لانه يجعل الناس يتكلمون عن ابناء عمومتهم وعماتهم

their uncles, what it's like to grow up in a big family.

واعمامهم، مثلا يكونوا نشأوا في عائلة كبيرة

Or maybe they grew up in a small family.

او ربما نشأوا في عائلة صغيرة

And you can compare your stories.

وتستطيع ان تقارن قصصك

If you grew up in a small family, maybe you always wondered what it was like to grow up

اذا كنت نشأت في عائلة صغيرة، ربما دائما تساءل ما اذا كنت نشأت

in a big family, or vice versa.

في عائلة كبيرة، والعكس صحيح

So it's a great way to show similarities and differences.

اذا هي طريقة عظيمة لعرض التشابهات والاختلافات

"How is your family?"

كيف حال عائلتك؟

So if you've met the person before, you can ask them this.

فيما اذا كنت قابلت الشخص سابقا، بامكانك سؤاله هذا

"How's your family?

كيف حال عائلتك؟

How are they doing?"

ماذا يفعلون؟

If the person has children, people love talking about their kids usually: "How are your children?"

اذا كان الشخص له اطفال، الناس يحبون الحديث عن اطفالهم عادة، كيف حال اطفالك؟

Okay?

"How are your children doing?

ماذا يفعل اطفالك؟

How old are your children?"

كم عمر اطفالك؟

These questions are really good to ask.

تلك الاسئلة جيدة حقا للسؤال

Finally, some people might not have children or maybe, you know...

اخيرا، بض الناس قد لايون لهم اطفال، كما تعلم

Maybe they have different types of family.

ربما لديهم نوع مختلف من الاسر

Maybe you're on an elevator with somebody and you see they have a dog.

ربما تكون على المصعد مع شخص ما وتراه يملك كلبا

People also love talking about their pets, and pets are family, too, so feel free to

الناس ايضا يحبون الحديث عن حيواناتهم، والحيوانت عائلة ايضا، اذا كن طلقا

ask about: "What's your dog's name?

في السؤال عن "ما اسم كلبك؟"

How old's your dog?"

كم عمر كلبك؟

You know, all of this...

كما تعلم، كل هذه

All of these are really good questions to ask.

اسئلة جيدة حقا لتسأل

Okay, so now let's look at the "O" which stands for "occupation".

حسنا، اذا الان انظر الى "و" التي تعتمد على المهنة

Okay, so "O", "occupation".

حسنا، اذا "و" المهنة

What is occupation?

ماهي المهنة؟

Well, usually when we talk about occupation we're talking about jobs or careers, or sometimes

حسننا، عادة عندما نتحدث عن المهنة نحن نتحدث عن العمل او الوظائف او احيانا

even education.

حتى التعليم

It's pretty much what you're doing to either make money or, you know, towards a career,

معلوم ماتعمله اما لعمل المال او تجاه الوظيفة

although it doesn't always have to be.

بالرغم من انها لاتكون موجودة

So, we like to talk about occupation because people know about what they're doing; they

اذا، نحن نحب ان نتحدث عن المهنة لان الناس تعلم ماذا تعمل

know about their job, they know about what they're studying.

يعلمون عن الاعمال يعلمون عن الدراسة

So it's good because it makes the person comfortable with a comfortable topic.

اذا هي جيدة، لانها تجعل الشخص يشعر بالارتياح لموضوع مريح

So, again, that's the purpose of small talk.

اذا مجددا، هذا هو الغرض من المحادثة الصغيرة

We're trying to keep the person feeling comfortable.

نحن نحاول ان نحافظ على شعور الشخص بالراحة

Now, the question I like to ask people the most is not: "What is your job?" because sometimes

الان، السؤال الذي احب ان اسأله للناس غالبا: "ما هو عملك؟" لانه احيانا

people don't have a job or sometimes they're between jobs.

الناس ليس لهم عمل او احيانا يكونون بين المشاغل

Sometimes...

احيانا

It happened to me once, the person had just lost their job that day and it was a very

حدثت معي مرة، الشخص كان قد خسر عمله في ذلك اليوم وكانت

awkward, not comfortable discussion after that.

غير ملائمة، والنقاش بعدها غير مريح

So what I prefer to ask people is: "What's", so: "What is"

اا انا افضل سؤال الناس ماذا وماذا

or "What's keeping you busy these days?"

ما هي مشاغلك اليوم؟

This way this gives the person the freedom to talk about what they really want to talk

هذه الطريقة تعطي الشخص الحرية للتحدث عن ما يريده حقا

about.

Maybe they have a lot to say about work, maybe they don't have a job so maybe they'd rather

ربما لديهم الكثير لقوله حول العمل، ربما هم لايملكون عمل اذا ربما بدلا

talk about a project they're working on or something interesting they're doing with their time.

من لك الحديث عن مشروع يعملون عليه او شيء ما ممتع يفعلونه في تلك الاوقات

Or, you know, if they're in school maybe they want to talk about their course.

كما تعلم، اذا كانوا في المدرسة فهم يريدون الحديث عن الكورس

So I think this is actually the best small talk question:

انا اعتقد هذه فعلا اسئلة جيدة لمحادثة مصغرة

"What's keeping you busy these days?"

ما يشغلك تلك الايام؟

And after they, you know, talk about what's keeping them busy, you can ask a follow-up question:

بعد ذلك، كما تعلم تحدثوا عما يشغلهم بامكانك ان تسأل اسئلة تتبعية

"Oh. That's interesting!

او، ذلك ممتع

How did you get involved with that?"

كيف صرت معنيا بذلك؟

Or: "How did you get started in that?"

او كيف بدات ذلك؟

You know, if it's work: "How did you get involved in that...?

كما تعلم، انه عمل كيف شاركت بهذا؟

With that company?"

مع تلك الشركة؟

Okay?

تمام؟

So this is a good follow-up question.

اذا هذه اسئلة تتبعية جيدة

You can also, if they are talking about their job, you can ask them:

بامكانك ايضا، اذا تحدثوا عن عملهم ان تسألهم

"How long have you been in your field?"

كم مضى عليك في مجالك؟

You know, maybe they've been doing what they're doing for five years or 10 years.

كما تعلم، ربما يكونون يعملون لخمس اعوام او عشرة اعوام

Okay?

So you can ask more questions about their job.

اذا بامكانك ان تسالهم مزيد من السئلة عن عملهم

"What's the best part of your job?"

ماهو الجزء الافضل في عملك؟

Or if they're a student: "What's the best part of, you know, your course?

او اذا كانوا طلاب: ماهو الشيء الافضل كما تعلم، في فصلك؟

What do you like the best?"

ما الافضل الي تحبه؟

Okay?

So it's good to get people to talk about what they really like.

اذا هي جيدة لجعل الناس يتحدثون عما يحبونه حقا

Okay, this is very, very important: In Western culture we do not like talking about money.

حسنا، هذا سؤال مهم جدا جدا: في الثقافة الغربية نحن لانتحدث عن المال

In other cultures it's okay, but in Western culture it's considered impolite or a little rude.

في ثقافات اخرى هو عادي لكن الثقافة الغربية يعتبر غير مهذب او قلة حياء

So, if somebody tells you: "Oh, yes, you know, I'm a doctor", and you really want to know:

اذا، اذا اخبرك شخص ما: "اوه، نعم، كما تعلم، انا طبيب" وانت تريد حقا ان تعرف

"Well, how much money do you make?" you cannot ask that.

حسنا، كم من المال تجني؟" لايمكنك سؤاله هذا

Okay? So no questions on money, no questions on salary.

تمام؟ اذا لا سؤال عن المال، لاسؤال عن الراتب

Even if you really want to know, you can't really ask that.

حتى لو كنت تريد ان تعلم، لايمكنك حقا سؤال كذلك

So, again: No talk on money or salary.

اذا مرة اخرى، لا حديث عن المال او الراتب

Okay, great.

So now let's look at the "R" from FORD, "recreation".

الان دعنا ننظر لحرف ال"ر" من فورد "الترفيه"

Okay, so recreation.

تمام، اذا ترفيه

When we talk about recreation what we're really talking about is things we do for fun, usually

عنما نتحدث عن الترفيه ما الاشياء التي نفعلها حقا للمرح عادة

hobbies, interests, anything you really like to do for fun.

هوايات، متعة، اي شيء تفعله حقا لاجل المرح

So, the key here is when you talk about recreation what you're really trying to do is you're

اذا، المفتاح هنا عندما نتحدث عن الترفيه ما الي تحاول ان تفعله انت

trying to find similarities with the other person.

تحاول ان تجد التشابهات مع شخص اخر

Okay? So, you know, for example, if you like soccer or football,

does the other person like that, too?

قد يكون الشخص الاخر يحبها ايضا

If you really like Game of Thrones and you're, you know, really watching it all the time,

does this other person have that similarity?

هل الشخص الاخر لديه ذلك الشبه؟

Are they the same?

هل انتما متشابهان؟

How are you similar?

كيف تشبهه؟

So this is great for really bringing people together.

اذا ها عظيم لجلب الناس لبعضهم البعض

A lot of the times people really like talking about their interests and hobbies, so this

معظم الاوقات الناس يحبون الحديث عن متعهتهم وهواياتهم، اذا هذا

can get somebody to open up.

Okay, so the question I would ask is: "So, what do you do for fun?"

حسنا، السؤال الذي اود طرحه: ماذا تفعل لاجل المرح؟

Okay?

This leaves it wide open, and the person might say:

هذا يترك المجال مفتوحا والشخص قد يقول

"Oh, you know, I like sailing. I love watching soccer.

اوه كما تعلم، انا احب الابحار، احب مشاهدة كرة القدم

I'm a huge soccer fan."

انا مشجع رياضي عظيم

Okay?

And then you can ask them a bunch of follow-up questions and keep the conversation going.

بعد ذلك يمكنك ان تسأل حزمة من الاسئلة التتبعية وتحافظ على استمرار المحادثة

You can ask them: "Do you play any sports?",

بامكانك سؤاله: " هل تمارس اي نوع من الرياضة؟"

"Have you seen any good movies recently or any good TV shows?"

هل شاهدت اي فلم مؤخرا؟" او " اي برنامج تلفزيوني جيد؟"

I know in Canada people really like talking about Netflix, as well as, you know, different

انا اعرف في كندا الناس حقا يحبون الحديث عن نت فيكس، على اية حال انت تعلم مختلف

TV shows and movies.

It comes up a lot in conversation, so, you know, if you're in Canada this is a really

good one to use, and I think US and many other places, too.

You can also ask another follow-up question:

"Oh, you know, you like snowboarding.

او، انت تعلم ، انت تحب التزلج على الجليد

How did you become interested in that?

كيف اصبحت تستمع بذلك؟

Tell me the story.

اخبرني القصة

How did you become interested in snowboarding?"

كيف تستمتع بالتزلج على الجليد؟

You can talk about music: "Did you hear Radiohead's new album?

بامكانك التحدث عن الموسيقى، هل سمعت الالبوم الجديد لريديوهيد؟

Did you hear Drake's new album? Taylor Swift?"

هل سمعت البوم دريك الجديد؟ تايلورسويفت؟

Okay?

So you can talk about music.

بامكانك الحديث عن الموسيقى

There's so many different things you can talk about.

هناك الكثير من الاشياء المختلفة تستطيع التحدث عنها

One tip about this, though, think about...

نصيحة واحدة حول هذا، اعتقد فكر بها

Remember I said you want to share about yourself, you want to talk about yourself, too?

تذكر اني قلت انكتريد ان تشارك حول نفسك، تريد الحديث عن نفسك ايضا

When you talk about recreation, make sure you're not taking over the conversation.

عندما تتحدث عن الهوايات كن متأكدا انك لاتسيطر على المحادثة

Okay?

For example, if you love soccer and somebody asks you these questions, make sure you don't

على سبيل المثال اذا كنت تحب كرة القدم وشخص ما سألك هذا السؤال كن متأكدا انك لا

keep the focus on soccer for the next hour.

Make sure that there's a...

It's a conversation, you're both asking each other questions and, you know, pay attention

to the cues.

Maybe somebody wants to talk a little bit about something, but not for the whole time.

So when you talk about recreation, it's really good, but also pay attention to what you're

saying about yourself.

All right, so now the last one is "D".

"D" stands for "dreams".

So let's talk a little bit about: What questions can we ask about dreams?

Okay, so dreams.

When I talk about dreams what I'm really talking about is motivations and goals.

عندما اتكلم عن الاحلام ما اعنيه حقا هو الحديث عن المحفزات والاهداف

What do you want to do in your life?

ماذا تريد ان تفعل في حياتك؟

Okay?

So, again, I am not talking about the dreams you have when you sleep.

مرة اخرى، انا لا اتحدث عن الاحلام التي تأتيك عند النوم

Usually those don't make the greatest small talk.

عادة تلك لا تعمل المحادثة الصغيرة الاعظم

So these are your goals in life.

اذا هي اهدافك في الحياة

Okay?

So, one thing I wanted to say before we get into these questions is small talk can be

a great opportunity to learn about other people.

Listen, you know, instead of being so focused on stress and:

"Oh my god, what if I make a mistake with my English?"

Or, you know: "Oh no, there's a silence."

Sometimes it's nice just to focus on what the other person is saying.

Learn about the other person.

What gets them up in the morning?

You know, what are their dreams?

كما تعلم، ما هي احلامهم؟

These can be very interesting things to learn about.

هذا الاشياء بامكان تعلمها ان يكون ممتع جدا

So, smile, listen, and learn.

اا، ابتسم، استمع، وتعلم

Okay, so when we talk about dreams you can talk about short-term dreams or long-term dreams.

حسنا، عندما نتكلم عن الاحلام بامكانك التحدث عن مدة الاحلام القصيرة او مدة الاحلام الطويلة

For example, the summer: "Any plans for the summer?

على سبيل المثال: الصيف، هل لديك خطط للصيف؟

Are you going anywhere this summer?

هل ستذهب لاي مكان في الصيف؟

What are you going to do this summer?"

ماذا ستفعل في هذا الصيف؟

So that's kind of a short-term goal or dream.

اذا هذا نوع من الاهداف قصيرة الامد

I find people love talking about travel, so I find that when you talk about travel it

اجد ان الناس يتحدثون عن السفر، اذا انا اجد عندما تتحدث عن السفر..

can really open up conversation.

بامكانك ان تتوسع في محادثتك

So: "If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?"

اذا اذا كنت قد سافرت لاي مكان في العالم؟ اين سافرت؟

You know: "What are your top three countries to visit?

كما تعلم، ما القمة عندك في البلدان التي زرتها؟

Have you been to any countries before?

هل سافرت لبلد اخر من قبل؟

Is this your first trip?"

هل هي رحلتك الاولى؟

People really like talking about where they want to travel, what they want to see, and

الناس حقا يحبون التحدث عن الاماكن التي يريدون زيارتها، ماذا يريدون ان يشاهدوا؟ و..

what they want to do.

ماذا يريدون ان يفعلوا؟

It really excites them.

ها يحمسهم حقا

You can also talk about, if somebody's been talking about a project that has to do with

بامكانك ايضا التحدث اذا كان شخص ما قد حدثك عن مشروع يريد عمله معك

work, maybe they've been talking about their job, maybe they're a student and they've been

عمل، ربما يكون قد حدثك عن وظيفة، ربما انهم طلاب وكانوا قد..

talking about the TOEFL or university, or a course they're taking, or maybe...

تحدثوا عن التوفل في الجامعة، او الكورس ربما يكونوا قد..

You know, maybe there's just somebody who's been making something, you know, somebody

كما تعلم، ربما هناك فقط شخص قد فعل شيء ما، انت تعرف احدهم

who likes to paint and they've been painting, you know, or taking photos of things.

يحب الرسم، ربما يكونوا قد رسموا، كما تعلم، او يلتقطون الصور للاشياء

You can ask them about their projects.

بامكانك سؤالهم عن مشاريعهم

"What will you do once you finish this project?

ماذا ستفعل حينما تنهي ذلك المشروع؟

What will you do once you finish the IELTS?

ماا ستفعل حينما تنهي الايلتس

What will you do once you finish your course?

ماذا ستفعل بعد ان تنهي الكورس؟

What will you do, you know, once you finish this book?"

ماذا ستفعل، كما تعلم عندما تنهي هذا الكتاب؟

Okay?

So asking them about the future is a really good idea for dreams.

اذا اسالهم عن المستقبل انه حقا جيد للاحلام

You know, if somebody talked about how they love watching movies or if they love reading

كما تعلم، اذا حدثك شخص ما عن حبه لمشاهدة الافلام او حبه للقراءة

books, you can ask them: "What do you want to read next?

الكتب، بامكانك سؤاله: "ماذا تريد ان تقرا في القادم؟

What do you want to watch next?"

ماا تريد ان تشاهد بعد

You know, if somebody's online watching a lot of movies, you know:

كما تعلم، اذا شاهد شخص ما الكثير من الافلام اون لاين، كما تعلم

"What's next in your list of things to watch?"

ما القادم في قائمتك لتشاهده؟

So talking about people's dreams is a really great way to connect to people, and it will

make the conversation more interesting than just talking about the weather.
