relationships, phrasal verbs, because there are a lot.

So I'm going to talk about 12 today.

Some are more basic, some are more common, should I say,

and some are more advanced.

Then if you use these in exams like IELTS and

the first in the advanced Cambridge exams,

then you should get a good response

because they're quite niche.

The first phrasal verb is to ask out.

第一个动词短语是“ask out”

It's separable, so to ask somebody out,

它是可以分开的，所以“ask somebody out”

and this is to invite someone on a date.

就是说“约某人出去”

For example, he asked me out at a party,

例如，他约我去一个派对，

and we've been inseparable ever since.

然后我们就从此不再分离了

So the next one is to take somebody out.

下一个是“take somebody out”

This is to take somebody on a date.

可译为“带某人出去约会”

So these first two are quite similar.

所以这两个意思是相近的

On our first date, he took me out to a restaurant.

第一次约会，他带我去了餐馆

Normally, the person who is taking the other person out

那么，带某人出去的那个人

is offering to pay for the date.

就自然要买单了

Normally.

就自然要买单了

I prefer to split the bill,

我其实更喜欢说“split the bill”（分担费用）

and then there are no expectations.

这样就没有后顾之忧了

And I like to do this,

并且我喜欢这样做

because I don't like to lead anyone on.

因为我不想“lead anyone on”

So to lead somebody on is to give them the wrong idea,

“lead somebody on”表示让某人误解

to make them think that they've got a chance with you,

让他们觉得他们还有机会

that the relationship might go somewhere,

那么这个关系就会可能会发展到别处去

but in reality, it never will.

就我现实情况，那是不会发生的

So...

所以…

So if I kept agreeing to these dates,

所以如果我继续答应这些约会

and letting this person pay for me

并让这个人为我买单

when I have no intention of furthering the relationship,

I would be leading that person on.

Then we have one which is a bit more casual.

This is to hook up.

“hook up”

To hook up normally means

“hook up”自然就表示

to have more of a casual relationship with somebody.

与某人发生相对随意的关系了

So...

So if you say I hooked up with her last night,

如果你说“我昨晚勾引了他”

it probably doesn't mean that it's a serious relationship.

这就可能不是一种认真的关系

It's more of a casual fling.

而是“一时的冲动”

But hey, whatever floats your boat.

但是呢，请您随意

Then we have another one, which is to drift apart,

然后看另一个“drift apart”

and this one's quite sad.

这个就比较悲伤了

To drift apart means to lose closeness.

“drift apart”表示失去亲密感情

You know, once you were really in love, really close,

你知道的，当你在处于亲密的爱情时

and then, you drift apart.

然后，你们疏远了。

It's quite self-explanatory.

这就一目了然了。

You don't see eye-to-eye anymore.

你们就不在见面了

So you could use it in a situation

所以，你可以在别人问你

where someone asks you, "Why did you break up with your ex?"

“为什么你和你前任决裂了”时使用这个短语

Uh, we just drifted apart.

哦，我们只是疏远了彼此

We went our separate ways.

我们走上了分离的道路

Next, we have to break up.

下面，我就说到“break up”了

To break up.

This is when a relationship ends.

这就是说一段感情到头了

Finito, done.

结束了，完成了。

You can also say to split up as well.

你也可以说“split up”

We split up last year.

我们去年分手了

He broke up with me because I was too grumpy.

他和我决裂了，因为我太暴脾气了。

However, if you then reconcile, you make up.

但是如果你们和解了，你们就“make up”了

So you break up, and then you make up.

所以你们先决裂，然后你们又和好了

To make up is to get back together.

“make up”表示和好如初

But we made up, and it's been great ever since.

但我们和好如初了，从此以后就变得很好了

The next one is a really nice one.

下面这个非常好啊

To put up with.

"To put up with”

And to put with somebody or somebody's behaviour,

"To put up with”后接某人或某人的行为

it means to tolerate.

表示“容忍”

So why did you split up?

所以你们为什么分手呢？

I couldn't put up with his snoring.

我不能“put up with”他打鼾

I could not tolerate his snoring.

也就是“我不能容忍他打鼾”

The next one, to cheat on somebody.

下一个是“to cheat on somebody”

A fly.

一只苍蝇

The next one is to cheat on somebody.

下一个是“to cheat on somebody”

And if you cheat on somebody, you are unfaithful to them.

如果你“cheat on somebody”，就是说你对他不忠诚

Or if you are cheated on, he cheated on me,

或者如果你被“cheated on”了，说明他欺骗了你

then it means that somebody has been unfaithful to you.

然后这说明某人对你不忠诚

They've gone off with somebody else behind your back.

他们在你背后喜欢别人

Never a nice thing to happen.

这绝不是一个好事情

You could say that they really messed you around.

你可以说他们实在是“messed you around”

To mess somebody around to really treat them in a bad way.

“To mess somebody around”表示用一种极坏的方式对待某人

Maybe one day you say you want to be with them,

也许有一天你说你想要和他在一起

and then the next day you change your mind,

然后下一天你改变了你的想法

and they're waiting on your every move.

他正等着你的行动

You get their hopes up.

你让他燃起了希望

You disappoint them again.

然而你再一次让他失望了。

It's best not to mess anyone around.

最好是不要怠慢任何人

Now the next one is something most of us hope to do one day,

下一个是我们大部分人都想做的事

and that is to settle down, and to settle down means

这就是“To settle down”，这表示

to finally find a stable relationship and stay there

最后终于找到了一个稳定的感情，并停留在那里

and have a more quiet and relaxed life.

享受一段安静放松的时光

So your partying days are over.

所以你的约会时光结束了

You've had enough of dating and meeting loads of new people.

你经历过许多约会并见过许多人

You find one person that you really like,

你最终找到了一个你真心喜欢的人

and hopefully really love, and you settle down with them.

和充满希望的真爱，并与他安定下来

Maybe you start a family, or move in together,

可能你开始组建家庭，一起搬进新家

get married, whatever.

Settling down is normally quite a nice thing to do.

“Settling down”（安定下来）自然是以前很美好的事情
