I'm going to talk to you about the four ways

Number one, is lists.

This is the usage that you're probably most familiar with.

We use commas to separate items in a list,

when the comma could be replaced with the word 'and'

In British English, it's not as common

The exception to this in British English

When the first noun in the list

Number two, separating clauses.

We also use commas to separate two independent clauses

Some examples.

When you have a subordinating clause

A really common mistake is using a comma

Sometimes, it's better to use a semicolon

Here is an example of a comma splice.

This is incorrect.

There are several different ways,

Here are some more examples of comma splices to avoid.

These types of commas are the ones

We use isolating commas when a word

Finally, I want to talk to you about direct speech.

Look at these examples.
