I can't begin to tell you how excited I feel. Hi, everybody. This is Mr.

You might say that I am an English addict.

I am crazy about English.

I love English very much. You might say that I am one of those over there.

And I have a feeling you might be one of those as well.

I am of course excited today because we just have ten days.

Only ten days to go until Christmas Day arrives.

Are you excited?

I know not everyone celebrates Christmas.

I have to say this every time because someone always writes to me

every year to tell me that not everyone celebrates Christmas.

And I have to say, I, I know that I do understand that. However,

what I love about any,

any festival is the celebration, the fun, the joy, the excitement, the happiness

that all of these festivals bring as people come together and they spend time with each other, they have fun.

They celebrate.

Maybe they will present gifts to each other, which of course, for most people is the best part of any festival.

When you think about it, it is definitely the best part of any festival.

It is getting those gifts.

Some people say it is not the most important part.

It is by the way, it is the most important part.

Besides that there is also the food.

Let us not forget the lovely food and

as a special treat this year, because Christmas Day is on Wednesday,

we will be with you live on Christmas Day.

Can you believe it? It is true.

We will be with you on Christmas Day.

I don't know how long for, but we will be joining you on Christmas Day.

Myself and also the other person as well.

I suppose I should mention him because he is part of this

thing. Mr. Steve will be with us today.

He is back after his very busy schedule, performing

in lots of different Christmas shows, singing in his best voice.

Of course we have Mr.

Steve with us later on at around about 2:30, so look out for that.

Lots of things to talk about today.

We are talking about quite a few things today we are talking about

things that remind you or make you feel

like Christmas is coming.

There is one particular thing that I want to talk about with Steve today.

One thing that when I was growing up, it was always the most exciting thing

as Christmas approaches.

So as it came nearer and nearer, there was always one particular thing that I was looking forward to doing, and I'm sure Mr.

Steve will have something to say about that as well.

It is an unusual thing, something that you might not even consider, but it could also be something that you have done as well.

All of that, and also talking of strange things.

We are talking about odd jobs.

The word odd is often used to mean unusual,

something strange, something weird, something unusual,

something maybe that you don't normally do, or something you don't normally see.

Something is odd.

Maybe two things that don't go together.

Odd. You might have odd socks.

Perhaps you are wearing a pair of socks that do not match.

We can say that they are odd socks.

They do not go together.

So we are looking at odd jobs, unusual casual jobs that you've done in the past.

I have done many jobs in my life, especially as a teenager, as a young person, because sometimes you had to find a job,

sometimes you had to do some part time job or something to earn a little bit of cash.

We all have to do it.

So I have done some very unusual jobs in my life, especially in my younger years.

I will tell you all about that later on as well.

What else are we talking about today?

Movies.

We love. Movies, especially at this time of year.

Lots of people want to go to the cinema.

Or maybe your favourite film is on TV during the Christmas period.

Or perhaps you want to stream one of your favourite movies.

It can be a Christmas movie or any movie.

Today we are looking at quotes from movies, famous quotes,

famous things that have been said in movies.

I'm sure you can think of quite a few.

We will be talking about that later on as well.

As you know, I live in England.

An unusual place, to be honest with you.

If you've never lived in England, I can tell you now we have some very unusual traditions and customs.

Is one of them

is the knighthood.

Have you ever heard of a knighthood?

Knighthood? Knighthood?

It is a type of award that is bestowed upon someone normally for their services to charity,

or maybe something they've been doing for many years, and they have devoted a lot of time to that particular thing.

So quite often this is an award that is given around this time of year, just before the new year arrives.

Normally it is well, in the past it was the Queen.

Of course, she has gone.

Now we have King Charles.

So normally you will be presented to the King, and he will tap your shoulders with a sword.

I know it sounds so strange.

I know what you're thinking.

So that particular ceremony is called a knighthood.

And then after that you will be known as Sir.

That will be the prefix before your name.

I think if it is, if it is a lady, I think it is a damehood, a damehood.

They become a dame. Isn't that lovely?

I know what you're thinking, Mr. Duncan.

Do you think maybe one day you will receive a knighthood from the King of England?

Do you think it will ever happen?

In my honest opinion, I don't think it ever will.

And I don't think I would accept it. To be honest.

Sometimes we do things because we love doing it.

We do it just because we enjoy doing that particular thing.

I love English words.

I love all sorts of things connected to the English language.

They can be phrases. They can be words. They can be idioms.

Here is an interesting phrase that we often use in English

when we are talking about the result of a contest, a competition, or race.

So quite often we will use this particular phrase.

The phrase is

pipped to the post to be pipped to the post.

If you are pipped to the post, it means to be beaten

by a small degree or a mount in a race or contest.

One person was slightly ahead of you.

You might be put to the post.

That means you didn't win, but you very nearly did.

You were so close to winning, but there was one person in front of you.

This you, pipped to the post to be beaten by a small degree or a mount in a race.

You were pipped at the post in a contest.

You might be picked at the post by someone to be beaten.

Another person has won.

Perhaps in a contest you scored 90 points,

but maybe another person scored 91 points.

That means they are the winner.

You were pipped to the post.

You almost won.

You almost came first.

But unfortunately you were pipped at the post.

We are talking about some unusual things today.

I did hear about this.

So normally at this time of year, normally the Oxford English Dictionary will normally give

the most used or the most popular phrase of the year.

And apparently this year.

The the most popular phrase is brain rot.

Brain rot?

Yes, I think that is a good phrase.

Quite often, a person who is wasting time doing something that serves no purpose.

Or maybe they are doing something that has no real.

Reason for existing.

Normally on the internet.

Maybe you are spending hours and hours looking at the internet.

Maybe you are spending a lot of time on the internet looking at

rubbish.

That does not go.

I know what you're thinking.

I know what you said. Then.

You think I can't hear you, but I can.

I heard you say that.

Does that include you, Mr. Duncan?

I will try not to be offended by that comment.

I'm sure you were joking. I really do.

Brain rot.

I think we all suffer from brain rot from time to time.

Especially when we have nothing to do.

And let's face it, the internet is a very good diversion

when you have nothing to do.

You can always go on the internet.

You can look at funny pictures.

You can look at videos of animals.

You can look at this animal

now on your screen in his little cage,

wishing he was somewhere else.

Dear, Mr. Steve is on his way.

Oh my goodness. I can't believe Steve will be with us soon.

The reason why I'm excited, of course, is because Steve has not been here for a while.

Because he's been busy with his Christmas shows.

He normally has a lot to do at this time of year.

Steve was busy this morning in the kitchen, although he was trying to make some bread.

However, he was not very successful.

Let's just say sometimes when you try to do something.

Sometimes it doesn't turn out very good or very well.

Here is a good example of that.

This is Mr.

Steve's bread that he made this morning.

Something went wrong with Mr. Steve's bread.

I don't know what happened, but something dreadful happened to Mr.

Steve's bread inside or in the middle?

All of the air escaped.

And now it looks like a rather sad loaf.

So I'm not sure what happened here.

I'm almost certain Mr.

Steve will explain what happened to his poor loaf of bread today.

It did not turn out very well, unfortunately.

I have no idea what happened.

What did you do, Mr.

Steve, to this bread, to make it look so sad and miserable.

We will find out all of that in a few moments time, because we are going to take a break.

Because have you noticed the studio is looking rather nice at the moment because Christmas is on the way

and I thought I would try to bring a little bit of the Christmas spirit

The other thing we should mention is your lovely Christmas corner.

Look at that.

Everything is looking really festive for Mr.

Steve because it's only ten days before Christmas.

But have you done all your Christmas shopping on Amazon?

Apparently the three days behind deliveries. Really?

All you husbands.

All you husbands out there watching last minute shopping.

We all know what as husbands are like for last minute shopping.

If you're thinking of it get it ordered quickly.

Otherwise your wives are going to be a bit upset that you haven't ordered a Christmas present in time.

They might.

They might be a little bit angry because they were expecting a Christmas gift and they didn't get one.

I'm just going to adjust Mr.

Steve a little bit.

I'm going to I'm going to try and put you up slightly higher, because it does look as if you are

sinking into your chair.

Here we go. That's better.

That's better. Are you okay?

I hope that did not shock you too much, Mr. Steve.

I've got vertigo, Mr. Duncan. Now I'm too high up.

It didn't make you dizzy, did it? Yes, apparently I read.

I think that's in America, where, Amazon is behind because probably most people or a lot of people certainly order presents online.

I tried I, I had to get a present for Mr. Duncan.

Don't say anything.

And the other day, I thought, I know I won't go to Amazon.

I will actually go to a shop.

They still there? They still exist.

There are shops out there, Mr.

Duncan, where you can drive to them, park and then walk in,

and there's all these things on display, and there's people behind counters.

They still exist. Anyway, the experience was horrific.

There was loud music playing, people pushing and shoving.

And I just thought, sorry, this is not a nice experience.

I've never liked shopping anyway, so I just came home and looked for what I wanted.

And it's such a waste.

You use up so much time shopping.

So I just came home, went on to Amazon, found what I wanted for Mr. Duncan, ordered it.

It arrived two days later. I mean it, there's no stress to that. I'm sorry.

Local shops, but, you've got to make the shopping experience a bit better than what I experienced.

Otherwise, I'm just not going in.

I think it is.

I've never liked shopping anyway, so it's not surprising I find ordering online so fantastic.

It is something that I think more and more people are doing.

They are not going into the shops, they are not driving into town, they are simply going on the internet.

However, as you just said, Steve, there might be something that you can't find on the internet.

Well, well, but but that might just be available in the shops.

But I agree with you, Steve. Going into the shops normal.

Normally at normal times of the year is bad enough, but this time of the year a lot of people do leave their Christmas shopping

until the last minute.

They do it late and of course lots of people then are rushing around and of course they will become rather irate and angry, perhaps.

And let's face it, we have had in the past before internet shopping, some of you watching.

Can't believe maybe that there was a time when you couldn't just order things online.

Just as there was a time before mobile phones, you know, internet shopping,

then you really become prominent in the last, maybe ten, 15 years, maybe, I would say been around for a while.

But I think it all started in the early 2000. Definitely.

But it's over recent years, it's gone up a lot.

We used to have to go to the shops for everything, for my mother, for families, and it was always

I never found, I always found it a very stressful experience having to put on such a wasteful tot of time.

Having to

park, having to go into the shops, have to pay to park and then you then you can't find what you want.

They're out of stock of something, haven't got the size you want.

So you come back frustrated.

Oh, I do remember doing this.

I remember I there is one particular thing that I remember that we did that might be

the craziest thing we've ever done is that is when you were trying to get something for your sister. Yes.

This is going back to the 1990s.

So this does predate the internet being around for buying all of your stuff.

So we were driving around trying to find one particular thing, and we were driving all over the place

trying to find this one gift for your sister. And we were unsuccessful.

But we did spend a lot of time

and you were getting more and more irate because of course, lots of other people were doing the same thing.

It's madness, isn't it? Madness at this time of the year.

You want, you know, that a particular, family member or a friend wants a particular gift.

And in this case, my sister wanted this particular.

Anyway, we're not going to get into details. I'm not going to get into it.

But the time that I spent driving to all these different shops to try and find that particular item.

Yeah. Must have been a

half a day.

It was the stress. The stress because of all the traffic and all that.

You know, at the end of the day, I say that phrase ultimately, does it really matter?

You know, if you don't get that exact gift for that person, I think, I think Christmas causes a lot of stress.

And you do hear a lot of people say this.

One of the most common things said by people at this time of year is that

what is the point?

What is the point?

And and yet we all still do it.

Because there is one thing.

There is one lovely thing about Christmas that we all love.

And that's the fact we can we can just stay at home, do nothing, eat as much food as we want,

have a good time with our friends and relatives. Maybe.

Some people do

say that the worst part of Christmas is having your relatives

nearby, because quite often you want to stay as far away from them as possible.

So it is a kind of I don't know, it's a bittersweet sort of time of year because we want to do it,

but then it is so stressful preparing for it that we don't actually want to do it.

Very weird.

So Beatrice says, and a lot of people, do do this.

They will if they're well organised, like Beatrice obviously is.

Then they buy their Christmas presents well before the Christmas rush period.

So at the beginning of December, or some people do it in November, even if you've got we know somebody that works in a shop,

a local shop where we get some of our groceries from, and she has something like 15 grandchildren.

Well,

if you've got that many presents to buy, you're going to have to plan ahead.

Otherwise you're going to disappoint a lot of people.

So, yes, I know some people that do.

And I mean, she's I was talking to her yesterday.

She said that she got all the her presence in the end to it's middle of November.

She just buys sort of one every now and then

because the stress of having to do that 15 imagine having to buy presents for 15 grandchildren.

I mean, the cost of it for a start.

But yes, it can be stressful at this time of the year.

But, we're trying to avoid all that, but it is worth it to buy a present for Mr.

Duncan and watch his face light up when he opens it on Christmas morning.

So, you

know, it's it's it's always nice to buy presents for children and, you know, in Mr.

Duncan's case, it definitely is true. Yeah.

I have to say, Christmas has always been.

It's always been a magical time of year for me.

I don't know why. Even though growing up, we didn't always have what we wanted.

But sometimes my parents would surprise me and they would give me something really, really nice, just like Mr.

Steve does, Francesca says.

In Italy, we begin buying Christmas presents in the summer.

Well, yes, because then you don't have the stress of it.

The only danger with that is

and I've been caught out with this before, is that, you end up buying something for somebody too early and then

you find out they've gone and bought that same thing for themselves all the time.

Well, they've changed their mind. They don't like it. Then they've changed a bit.

But I have bought things, for Mr. Duncan before early. And then suddenly Mr.

Duncan said, oh, look, I've just bought this and I'm thinking, damn, I've already bought that for you for Christmas. Yes.

The other thing that people do at this time of year, they might have something that was it was given to them

maybe last Christmas or recently, and then they give it to someone else as a gift.

So you have something that you don't want.

You wrap it up in Christmas paper and you give it to someone, even though that thing is something that you would given.

The only problem with that is you have to be careful that you don't give that gift back to the person who gave it to you.

Originally a register? Yeah. Are you a register?

Are you guilty of getting a present from somebody that you don't like or you don't want?

And you think, oh, I can give that to, such and such a for their birthday or somebody else.

So you just say, oh, thank you so much for that beautiful, Christmas gift.

I mean, wine or alcohol, if you.

I mean, we don't drink much alcohol, but we often get given bottles of wine or something for Christmas, but we never drink it.

No, we always.

If you got to go to a party or I need to give something for a,

a, what is it?

When you buy tickets to win prizes?

A raffle, a raffle in, if you if somebody asks you, can you give out a raffle prize?

I just, you know, you can take these these gifts you don't want, and and reuse them for that sort of thing.

So I, I'm sort of guilty of it, but especially I think it happens mostly at Christmas

because you have to buy so many gifts and maybe you forget someone.

Maybe you have to buy a gift someone. And if you forgot about them.

And so you find something, maybe that you were given by another person,

and you wrap that up with paper and give it to them and say, oh, this is just for you.

But it's something that you received as well as a gift.

It can happen quite often.

Re gifting do you're gift do you're gift letters?

I don't think it's anything you would.

You know it's not morally wrong.

Can I just tell you Steve I think it's happened to us in the past. Yes.

I think at least on two occasions.

I don't know how we knew there was something that gave it away.

Now, I think one of the things we received was something that may have already been opened, maybe a package or a container.

And then it was wrapped in Christmas paper and we thought maybe that particular thing had been re gifted because they didn't want it.

Yeah, the packaging looks a bit scruffy.

Maybe there isn't that such a seal on it that that you would identify as something that had been new.

It's damaged. It's damaged.

It is interesting how certain songs are played every single year.

Now, I'm not talking about any other place, but certainly here in the UK there are certain songs

that are played every year, I suppose the one that most people sing to me.

If you are watching in the UK, you will know exactly what I'm talking about.

There is I wish it could be Christmas every day that is a popular one.

And also here it is.

Merry Christmas also played all the time.

If you ever go round a shopping centre or a shopping mall, some people apparently still do it.

You will hear those songs.

And of course most people think of Last Christmas.

I will try some echo here.

Last Christmas I gave you my heart.

Can you believe George Michael passed away on Christmas Day?

Is it? That might be both.

Unfortunately, ironic and also sad.

I can't believe how unfortunate that actually is. It's very sad.

So if you, not having a good time on Christmas Day, or if you don't celebrate Christmas, then we will be here.

a wide range of audiences.

Really, people who don't like Christmas but normally celebrate it

or aren't enjoying Christmas Day because maybe they've had an argument with their family,

and they've stayed at home or something like that, or people, of course, many people around the world

don't celebrate Christmas, so we'll be here for you. Yes.

And, something I said earlier doesn't even matter if you if you follow a certain festival because of your religion.

I love any festival, any celebration.

You does it the weekend. Unfortunately, today something very weird happened to your bread.

It's gone. All sort of.

I don't know, it looks like maybe a football that's had something stuck in it.

It looks like a deflated football.

What's happened?

Mr. Duncan, is that I was try I bought some new flour, a new type of flour.

Which was, like a malt malt loaf, flour.

Yes.

And, I've noticed before it doesn't seem to work very well when it comes to making bread.

So, I shan't be buying that flour again.

It goes sort of.

It's strange.

It goes into a sort of a liquid. It goes all weird in the bread machine.

You've got to be careful with these bread machines, because not all types of bread suit them are wheat

rather so normal white, strong white flour or brown flour.

Wheat is fine.

But I bought this particular type called a malt low malt loaf flour.

And it's got some things, some ingredients in it which do not suit the bread maker.

And yes, a rare occurrence for me to make a loaf of bread that didn't come out according to plan.

I'm sure it's edible. I'm sure we can toast it

and it will be

fine, but, I shall not be using that particular make of a flour any more.

Mr. Steve is blaming the bread maker. It is?

Well, I mean, I don't do anything if it's the bread maker machine that does everything, you just throw everything in, you know?

You know what they say, Steve, about Workman always blames his tools.

At this time of year, Steve, a lot of things happen that are seen as festive.

Things happen that are normally done at this time of year the other night.

And you know what I'm going to say, Steve?

The other night we went to see a show.

All I'm going to say is it was not

for us.

That's all I'm saying.

It was not for us just to prove that we actually left halfway through.

Now I'm going to explain everything. Now, Steve and I can see you already.

You're starting to do this.

Well, don't worry, Steve, I've got it under control

because we are going to talk about this particular thing that happens at this time of year,

however good or terrible it may be, we are going to talk about it right now.

Do you know what I'm on about, don't you, Mr..

Steve, we are talking all about the traditional pantomime pantomime,

and now there is a brilliant word, the word pantomime.

And this is a particular type of show that is put on in the UK quite often across England,

and it is put on in theatres sometimes.

Maybe the local schools will also have their own pantomime.

It is something that is done at this time of year.

And the other night we went to see a pantomime, didn't we? Mr. Steve?

And it was to say it was,

there was a lot going on on the stage and also off the stage.

In fact, during one moment some of the people from the stage came into the audience and they were doing certain things.

Some kids were also coming from the stage into the audience.

So there were adults taking part, weren't there? And also children.

And some of the children came into the audience and they they were firing water

pistols, little tiny gun shaped things full of water.

And one of one of the kids, one of the kids.

Can you believe what the next

one of the children came up to me and suddenly it fired the water

into my face,

directly into into my face on purpose.

I could have complained about it, but I didn't.

But I have to say, I have to say I think, why?

Why did you do that?

Because it was it me?

I took it very personally.

A pantomime is a it's a kind of traditional sort of British,

show that goes on around Christmas time that is really for children, for, for families, but particularly for children.

It's a sort of a very light comedy with sort of innuendo and lots of fun things going on on the stage for really for children.

Yeah, it's, it's, it's I'm going to explain all about this now, Steve, because we're going to go into this subject in in depth.

Oh, I bet you weren't expecting that.

So pantomime as a word, it can be used in other ways.

So generally speaking, when we talk about pantomime, the word pantomime is a noun

that refers to a type of performance using movement or mime.

So the precise definition of pantomime is not the same as the one we were just talking about.

So traditionally the word pantomime meant a type of performance, normally using movement

or mime, you often see people in the street, don't you?

Doing mimes?

Maybe they are pretending to be trapped

inside a glass box or something like that.

So it is interesting to note that this word has been around for a long time.

In fact, I think it.

I think it dates from Roman times when they used to put on ludicrous plays that make no sense,

featuring foolish people playing rather silly characters,

a stage performance normally featuring exaggerated characters and actions.

So this is the type of thing that we went to see the other night.

A stage performance normally featuring exaggerated character turns and actions.

So when we say exaggerate, we mean you make something more than it really is.

Isn't that right, Steve?

That's correct. Yes. And that's where the humour is derived from.

And of course, children particularly like this because they're seeing characters that are over the top characters.

And one of the common, I don't know whether you're going to talk about this,

but was certainly one of the very common themes to have in a pantomime is a man dressing up as a woman.

That's it.

We will be talking about that. And that, of course, is very funny for children.

Because to see him obviously a man.

Yes. Not a man trying to look like a woman, a man dressing as a woman, but obviously is a man.

Yeah.

And that, of course, is funny, particularly for children.

Well, we call it we often call it drag, drag or a pantomime dame.

So drag is when a man dresses up as a woman, but normally for some sort of performance.

And it is a very British type of humour.

Whenever you think of things like Monty Python, at some point there is always at least 1 or 2 of them dressed up as women.

So it is it is a very British type of humour because it's funny, because it's funny.

You get other exaggerated

like characters, like you'll get somebody who's there's always an evil person, a bad person. Yes.

And they're very, you know, they're being over the top in a, in a comedic way.

That's it. They're the baddie and everyone's going boo from the audience.

It's just a tradition. Yeah, it's that's it.

Another, definition in the UK.

So here we go.

In the UK, a pantomime is a type of show put on around Christmas time for children.

So again, this is the show that we went to see the other night.

That was

let's just say it was absolutely crazy.

So many things going on.

Even though one child came into the audience and squirted a water pistol into my face.

Why, there was the giant balls being thrown into the audience, right?

And giant, huge, great sort of inflated balls that were being thrown.

They were like large beach ball, large beach balls, people in exaggerated giant costumes.

At one point we had huge penguins, about ten foot tall penguins going across the stage.

Yeah, so?

So everything is larger than it normally is and exaggerated.

Which children like, which children like, and also some adults like as well.

And some of them, some of them don't really like.

The show is normally an adapted version of a fable or a fairy tale.

So quite often the pantomime that is performed is a type of show based on a well known story, a well known fairy tale.

And I'm sure you can think of many of them.

They're a Christmas pantomime, features exaggerated characters, jokes, songs and

innuendo.

And that, again, is a very British type of humour.

It is where you say something that might sound,

I don't know, pleasant or nice, but there might also be another meaning that is a little naughty as well.

So you might say something that could be taken two ways.

You might say, oh, oh, I, I'm probably not going to do it now.

I was going to say something really rude.

That was not an innuendo that I was going to say.

So innuendo is something you say that is not rude, but it could be taken as rude.

I suppose it depends how you say it and how you take it.

Oh, you see, that's an innuendo that isn't entendres.

You see, that is an innuendo that I just did. Then. Steve.

Yes. I mean,

as you say, trying to think of some examples of,

fairy tales that are commonly turned into pantomime.

Well, I'm and maybe I'm going to look at them in a minute. Right. Okay.

So so Christmas pantomimes, they have humour

that is directed at the children, but also there is a type of humour that we call innuendo,

which means that you are saying something that could also be rude or a little naughty, but the children don't get that.

That's it. They will not understand that joke.

The adults understand that joke, but the children don't.

Although these days I think I think the kids do understand it.

The jokes are normally aimed at the children, whilst the innuendo goes, for the adults.

As Mr. Steve just correctly said,

the performance is normally colourful and

chaotic.

I think that definitely describes the show we went to see the other night, and there's a lot of audience interaction.

From the actors on the stage, and the, the script itself

for the production is, is, is very there's a lot of ad libbing from the people on the stage.

It's a very loosely scripted, type of performance,

not like a normal show where everyone is very strict in what they're saying to each other and a pantomime.

It's it's very sort of ad hoc.

Quite often they've got a few basic themes they're going to go through and some lines, but

because the audience is involved, it all gets very chaotic and, it's just designed as entertainment for children.

It certainly did get chaotic the other night.

I might even say a little too chaotic. Yes. Thank you Vitus, thank you for that

innuendo, says Vitesse.

Allusive or oblique remark or hint?

Typically a suggestive or disparaging one. Yes.

So something that could be taken in a nice way or a not so nice way, maybe something that is a little rude or even insulting.

A type of sarcasm.

Even so, the performance is normally loud and colourful and chaotic.

Here we go, Steve.

The characters are often loud and colourful as well, and as you can see, this is what Steve mentioned a few moments ago.

Quite often we will have men

dressed as women performing on stage.

So this is something that is very traditional.

So this is not something that's just started to happen in pantomime.

This is been around for maybe getting on for a hundred years.

Isn't that strange?

So men dressing up as women is not a new thing.

It's been around for a very long time. Also, they have the reverse.

They have women dressing as men. Yeah. So like Peter Pan, for example. Okay,

you will have a woman playing the the male role.

So it's the other. It can be the other way around as well.

So it does happen.

So the characters are often loud and colourful in various ways.

Maybe the characters are a little loud, maybe they are

a, playing a good character or maybe an evil character as well.

It can happen.

The stories adapted include

Cinderella, a very well-known fairy tale.

Cinderella, you shall go to the ball, or Cinderella.

But then she goes, and what happens? Steve?

Well, she, she, meets a prince, and, she's got ugly sisters, and, she meets it, meets a prince.

Her sisters don't want her to be happy.

She loses her shoe, and, the prince wants to find out, which girl in the village this shoe fits.

Yeah, because she, she has to run away at midnight

because all of the things she's wearing, and everything, all of the magic will disappear.

So she has to run away, but she leaves behind one glass slipper, which I always think is is is a bit of a plot hole.

Because if everything vanishes, the glass slipper would also vanish, you see?

Well, you know that that is a huge plot hole.

There's always plot holes.

Just. It's best not to think too much about the, the plot.

Just accept it for what it is.

I may just have I missed I may just have found a huge plot hole in Cinderella, I mean, Cinderella, it was originally a story, a film,

but it can be turned into a pantomime, which means it then becomes an exaggerated form

of its original intention with humour and outlandish characters, etc..

Yes. So the stories include Cinderella also, Jack and the Beanstalk, a very well-known, also quite a gruesome fairy tale.

You might not realise this stuff, but most fairy tales or fables are actually

quite gruesome and violent and they're originally written for children.

Believe it or not, they were written for children, but they they often they are often really violent and dark,

including Jack and the Beanstalk, who tries to chop up Jack the

the giant and, Jack who climbs up the magic beanstalk.

So that's another one that is often done at Christmas time.

Snow as a pantomime. As a pantomime. Snow white.

Waiting for Prince Charming to come.

Puss in boots. Sorry. Puss in boots. Another one.

But I'm sure a lot of people will have gone to see a pantomime.

It wasn't suitable for us.

It was just to live.

We're getting too old, Mr. Duncan. Maybe, we're getting too old to enjoy a pantomime.

And, Well, Toby, if I can be honest with you, I didn't want to go anyway.

You know, I knew that I probably wouldn't enjoy it. And I was right.

Especially when that kid came up to me and squirted water straight in my face, which they shouldn't have done.

They shouldn't have done that anyway.

It was, you know, we supported our friend who is as we speak, Mr.

Duncan, as we speak in a performance right now. Of fact

of that, because he's had to do eight performances this week.

Yesterday he had to do three performances, set quite a big theatre near Wolverhampton,

and it's an amateur, production company that put on these shows.

And, and he's having to do eight of them.

He was playing one of the, the brothers, in this particular play that we pantomime that we went to see, it was, it was Robin Hood.

Robin Hood pantomime version of Robin Hood.

Of course, he was the, the highwayman, the famous, the guy that used to rob the rich and give it to the poor Robin Hood.

Robin hood riding on his horse, riding in.

Where was it?

Nottingham, Sherwood, Sherwood Forest, which isn't too far from here.

No it isn't, it's just over there. There it is. I can see it from here.

There's a famous oak tree that's hundreds and hundreds of years old.

And also, Peter Pan as well.

Peter Pan, I think Peter Pan is the most popular of all the pantomimes and also shows for children.

Of course, the boy

who never grew up.

I know I'm not talking about me often played by a girl or a young.

Yeah, young woman you see in in the pantomime. So it works both ways. It works both ways.

But the comedy, there's not much comedy in Peter Pan being played by a girl, but there's a lot of comedy in men

dressing up in gigantic, over-the-top dresses and with with with ludicrous makeup on and huge wigs.

So don't get that confused. They're not doing it because they want to be women.

They're doing it for the comedy.

And it during the war, when a concert parties were putting on shows, for the men,

who were abroad, going to war in the first, Second World War.

They used to put on

plays, for the troops.

And quite often the men would have to dress as women because the plays or whatever they were putting on had to have a woman in it.

So they, they dressed as a woman for comedy.

And of course, it's very funny, isn't it? When you see a man dressed up as a woman, it's always funny.

Yeah. It's not. It's not funny when you see a woman dressing up as a mate can be funny.

Okay, so this is the comedy element is particularly that person is quite big.

And, let's just say robust.

Steve. Steve,

sometimes, sometimes you have to know where to stop that sentence.

I'm not insulting anyone, but, No, no, there's nothing. There's nothing funny about a lady

or a man dressed as a lady.

Nothing funny whatsoever.

Even though it is sometimes hilarious, to be honest.

And of course, the soldiers used to go abroad and they would dress as abroad.

Something that is done in a way to appear real or maybe something that is is not quite as it seems.

You allude to something you hint it's something maybe,

but it is.

It is interesting when we talk about things like pantomimes, a very British thing as a phrase, of course, as a phrase. Mr..

Steve, we can describe any chaotic situation as a pantomime.

Maybe you went to, I don't know, something, maybe a works meeting.

And there was a big event taking place and lots of people were supposed to appear

and give their own individual speeches, but everything kept going wrong and people kept turning up late.

And then sometimes the the equipment or the microphone wouldn't work and everything kept going wrong.

You might describe that situation as a pantomime.

Yeah. You. I got this working for this company. It's like being in a pantomime. Yes.

Chaotic situation, things going wrong, nothing quite working.

Maybe it happens in the end. Maybe it all comes because in the end, in a pantomime, of course.

Good.

Always, triumphs over evil.

The baddies always get their comeuppance. Come Uppance, there's a good word for you.

So they get, punished.

Punished? Really?

Well, that their company is is the their reward for being bad.

But yes, they get punished that, you know, bad people in a pantomime, always, always lose.

And good people always win.

That's it. Unlike life. But,

I, I then sometimes life can be a pantomime.

Live can be a pantomime. Yes. Chaos.

Things happening randomly.

Things you have little control over.

Is a pantomime. Yes.

Something crazy.

Something that you may have heard of, but maybe you were unsure of what it actually is.

Pantomime. Every Christmas, lots of people have

pantomimes.

They pantomime, they call it it's pantomime season.

Yeah, it's it's it because there's it's just that time of the year when lots of companies put on pantomimes because they're popular.

They sell well.

So particularly for amateur, amateur,

production companies, they make lots of money.

They're cheap to put on, they make lots of money, and then they can use that money to fund their next proper show. Yes.

Yes, definitely.

What I was going to say, Steve, Christmas is coming and it is an exciting time of year.

I have to say, there are certain things that I always think of from my childhood because let's face it, as we said earlier,

a lot of the things that happen at this time of year are aimed at children.

Christmas is a magic time.

It is a wonderful time of year.

We love Christmas very much.

Here, and there are certain things that I that I used to look forward to as a kid,

and this might sound like a strange thing to mention, but it was always something

that filled me full of excitement whenever I saw this particular thing.

So I'm going to show it to you now.

I'm sure you will know what I'm referring to as soon as you see it. Steve.

But this is something that used to arrive at the house.

It would come through the letterbox, or it would be delivered by the local newsagent,

and it would always be the most exciting thing during the days leading up to Christmas.

And there it is on the screen now.

Oh yes, the TV guide, the TV guide.

There was only one in those days. There were two.

There was Radio Times and TV times.

Yes, there were very few of them. That's it. So?

So there were two different ones.

But we always look forward to the Christmas

magazine, all of the TV programmes,

because they had the programmes not only for Christmas but also into the New year.

So it was many, many days of the schedule of everything that was going to appear on television.

And it was it was such an exciting that I don't know why.

As a kid I used to love the TV guide.

As a child, I used to love looking at everything that was going to be on during Christmas.

You could circle all the things that you wanted to watch because you were on holiday.

The children were, you know, off for two weeks, and well, at least a week, if not two weeks.

And they used to they would show all sorts of unusual programmes, film.

Yes, Christmas films.

And, in those days when we were growing up, there were only three channels.

So you only had three channels to pick from.

So it was very easy to work out programmes you wanted to watch.

I mean, can you, could you actually have a TV guide now with all the channels in?

Well, they still have it, but with the main TV channels.

So now we have five main TV channels.

But of course, if you have digital television there are hundreds.

So I think it is hard to list all of them.

But these magazines still exist, but they are in a very different format.

But it was always, always the most exciting.

So I can't tell you how excited I was as a kid to have one of these in my hand and look at all of the movies that we're going to be on.

And sometimes, of course, they would show movies that had never been shown on television before.

I remember one Christmas when they showed Star Wars for the first time ever, and that was at Christmas.

And it was so exciting sitting in your living room watching Star Wars on your television.

It was incredible.

We always got excited when my father did because they'd always show a James Bond film at Christmas.

Yeah. See, don't forget, if you're, you know, of a certain age.

Yeah.

There were times when you couldn't just magic a film up on the internet and watch it.

You had to wait for it to be shown on television, and it would only be shown at certain times of the year, usually.

So James Bond films were always shown on Christmas Day as, like the main highlight, to watch.

And if you hadn't seen it at the cinema or if you'd seen it at the cinema years ago, here was your opportunity to watch it again.

And so it was a great, it was a great excitement.

On Christmas Day, we'd have Christmas meal, we'd watch, the Queen at 3:00, and then we'd sit down and watch, a James Bond film

and all of these things would just be shown on television.

They were broadcast, so.

So there was no digital television way back in the 1970s, no digital TV.

You just had free TV channels and that was it. Nothing else.

So it is strange.

You're right.

Steve, I wrote there are certain films, certain movies that they always show at Christmas.

I don't know why this is a weird one.

I don't know why they always show war films.

Yes. On Christmas Day, war film, Bridge over the River Kwai.

Always the same. Movies. Guns of Navarone. Yes.

Were the popular films I used to show the Great Escape.

The Great Escape every year.

And of course, that well-known felon murder on the Orient Express, which is one of my favourite Christmas films.

Yes, I always showed that one as well.

And, anyway, it's a time to relax and, and just watch things and, and stop

when it's two weeks or a week, depending on how much holiday you have, just to forget about your work.

Forget about your troubles.

Sit down, relax, have a load of unhealthy snacks and watch a film.

Yes, and it's probably the only time we actually sit down and watch a film.

Let's face it. So you going to talk about certain things with films in a bit?

We are going to. Right? Yes. So stay tuned. Something exciting to come.

We've got where we're also going to be talking in a few moments about things that were said in movies

that have become quotes that a lot of people will repeat.

So I'm sure you can think of 1 or 2 out there in YouTube land.

All of that coming up in a little while.

There is another magazine, of course.

So there was Radio Times and also TV times is the other one.

Although that one was more for the independent television stations, whereas Radio Times was aimed more at at the BBC.

So that's probably the reason why Mr.

Steve only knows this one, because his family was very posh, so they would never.

I know your family would never have read TV times.

It would never have TV times in the house.

Only if they'd sold out of ad, out of the Radio Times. Yes.

Then we buy the TV times.

But yeah, there was a lot of snobbery around in the 70s about watching a TV channel with adverts.

I which was when was ITV created to do?

Well?

ITV would have been created in the, I would say in the late 1950s, a lot of TV in this country

came around and the, the, I would say the mid 50s, late 50s, early television,

BBC, of course, were the first and they've been around so for a hundred years.

Can you believe the BBC has been around for a hundred years?

But then, some of the programmes they show were probably made 100 years ago.

In the 50s, they introduced a second TV channel where they were was it was independent.

So in order to fund itself, because the BBC, of course, is funded by a licence fee,

which we all have to pay by law, whereas ITV is funded through advertising.

Yeah, I was independent, so they got a licence to do this, but there was always a lot of snobbery associated with watching, ITV

and when we grew up, my father didn't like us watching ITV.

And if you watch comedy programmes from around that time, yeah, they make reference to that.

We've been watch if you watch comedy channels,

the references made in these to middle class families who, who say, oh, turn that off.

It's ITV. Yeah. It's like it's it's like snobbery to watch your.

Your father used to literally say that you told me that he would not watch ITV if he came in

and we were watching a programme on ITV, he would make us turn it over.

I'm not watching that rubbish today, but on the BBC it it was seen as a more middle class, sort of cultured forum.

And that reference is, is made in a lot of TV comedy programmes that were made in the 1970s.

Yes, we would often look at certain class attitudes anyway,

we are going to move on because it's 3:30 already.

It's like it.

It did look like a football.

Well, they call it the cannons of Navarone.

A wonderful film where you see that people in command aren't always the best.

I was watching scene Lewis says he's seen that film about 50 times.

It is a wonderful film. Films made around those times. War films were fantastic.

I saw the last half an hour of a film yesterday on the television called The Train, with Burt Lancaster.

And I hadn't seen this film before, or if I had seen it, it was a long time ago.

I think it was made in the 1960s. It's in black and white.

I just switched it on because I was having a cup of tea and a cake. Okay.

And I switched it on and I was riveted.

Riveted immediately by that film.

And, so if you, somebody who knows about war films, The Train, it's very brutal.

But my goodness, what a wonderfully made film.

Yes, I think it was made late, late 1950s, late 1950s.

So if you if you want to sit down and watch that on Christmas Day, feel free.

But I'd like to watch that film.

It's about sort of prisoners of war who escape and a and a Nazi, Colonel that's trying to steal all the art from France.

Okay. Don't tell them. Don't tell them the plot. Well, that's the plot.

And, Burt Lancaster tries to foil them and it's just Eve.

Oh, what a wonderful film.

Well, there's almost no need to watch it now.

Lewis says that's a wonderful film as well.

I haven't seen The Great Escape for a long time. The one with the elephants in it.

And they're going over the Alps or something and trying to escape from somewhere.

Is that the great escape? There's an elephant in it.

Now, when I say line lines, I mean things that were said in the movie that lots of people quote nowadays.

Well, the famous I mean, all mine is from science fiction film. Oh, nice guy.

I can never do so, you know, you have not got.

I don't there's no really memorable lines. What about.

Yeah, but things that people use I mean Arnold Schwarzenegger has has, has created loads

of famous phrases in his films because if his persona and his accent, if anybody else had said them, nobody would remember.

But people use these a lot because if anybody else had said it, if Tom cruise had said it, nobody would remember it.

But because it was Arnold Schwarzenegger.

And with this particular style and his heavy, thick accent, and the character he was playing, you remember it.

And the other one I remember is from Blade Runner, there's a couple from blade, Blade Runner which is my favourite all time film.

Yeah it's another science fiction film.

They're all science fiction films and it's if you've ever seen Blade Runner, it's, it's basically about these.

There's this chap who's made, this scientist who's made all these sort of robots.

This chap, is a bio mechanical engineer or something like that,

and he's created very lifelike, artificial humanoids who?

And, tell me more.

But they they don't live very long.

And one of them comes back, to, to face him to, to to, you know, find out if he can make him live longer

because they've got a consciousness. And that would be Rutger Hauer. That's right.

Yeah.

And, he tries to try to console his creation.

Who's going to die very short. I think they only live about 12 years, don't they?

The these creations, these artificial beings, humanoids and, but of course, he's that he tries to console them by saying,

well, look, you've lived such a full life, you've done so much in your life.

And the phrase he uses is the candle that burns is, twice as bright,

burns half as long.

I thought I for a moment you wouldn't get a candle that burns twice as bright, burns half as long.

So, in other words, if you use a lot of energy in your life, do a lot of things your way yourself out.

And the and some people say that better, you know, that that that's always stuck in my mind.

That phrase,

I'm more the opposite of that.

The candle that burns half as bright last twice as long.

Well, you said more my life.

It's a sort of a slow moving plant, half as bright, that

half as bright. That's.

You know, you know what?

I think that might might be the most honest thing you've ever said.

The other the other one, which I've written down and I'll have to I'll have to actually quote this is when Rutger here, is

who is the robot?

The humanoid that dies in the end, and he's about to die.

And, he's recalling everything that he's done in his life.

And he says that there's quite a poignant phrase that he uses.

And he's talking about all his memories and he says all these moments will be lost in time as tears in rain.

So he, what he's saying is

that he will die and everything that he's saying, everything that he's done

will be gone forever.

Lost like tears in rain.

And it's a very poignant phrase.

That really relates not just to him in the film as an artificial creation, but to all of us. Yes.

Well, the, the film itself is a is a sort of allegory for our own mortality, isn't it?

That's it.

And, but of course, scientists now are coming up with all these,

these new, just to, just to try and add a positive spin to that rather depressing whatever you about, whatever you're about to say.

It's not not happening.

No. But, in the universe that the scientists are now beginning to think, oh, we that, you know, memories are information.

Yeah. Information is not lost in the universe. Okay? It may be. Just go somewhere else.

No it isn't.

They actually use little people behind them. I think that's the word you can use.

You know, at work I had friends at played again, Sam. I mean, how many times

people said that except they didn't say in the movie, didn't they?

It was never said.

And this is another thing that happens quite often.

We will quote movies

that never actually had that.

That particular line in the movie, he never says play it again, Sam ever.

Does he say play it something different?

You know the song, play it, Sam?

I think it's something like that, yes.

He didn't say played. Again.

Sammy says something slightly different, but it's been morphed into something else.

It's being misheard.

It's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, but but people use them in everyday.

Well, they used to I don't know whether they still use that phrase. Play it again Sam.

Well I think they might use it as a joke.

Quite often these things are used as jokes, such as what you said, frankly, my dear, and all of that.

And tomorrow.

Tomorrow is another day.

And people will often use that. Well, yeah, they'll use them in a present situation. Yeah.

So the life is like a box of chocolates. There is another one that people use a lot.

My mother used to say, laugh is like a box of chocolates.

You never know what you're gonna get. Yeah, I mean, which is.

Yeah, it's, you know, there is truth in these phrases.

And, often a thought about an aspect of life is,

is focus into one small little phrase that, that it's concentrated.

One phrase tells you

everything about a particular aspect of life. Sometimes. Yes.

And that one is a is a is is a is a well known one that reports says we are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams.

Yeah.

And we saw we saw a rather sad sight yesterday as we were walking around

one of the lovely big trees that we walk by every weekend, sadly was damaged by the wind and became unsafe.

And sadly it's had to be chopped down.

And it's a beautiful tree.

One of the things I always feel sad about is when a lovely tree that's obviously been around for a long time is cut down,

and there you can see it.

So that was the tree that we saw yesterday on our walk.

And we always walk past this particular tree quite often.

And in the summertime, all of the sheep, all of the baby lambs will sit under that particular tree.

But now it is no more.

The tree, sadly, was damaged by all that terrible weather.

We had the most atrocious weather.

It's caused so much damage around this area, to be honest with you.

Steve, something you wanted to mention?

I thought I was going to say.

There's another quote here from, Wild Strawberries.

We act according to our needs.

I like the one. That's a sort of a moral.

There's a moral in there somewhere.

Because it goes right or wrong, is is very dependent on your point of view.

I think that's one of the reasons why movies always leave such an impression on people, especially when you're young.

If you watch movies quite a lot, as I did as a kid,

I was always sat in front of the television, which is probably why I have to wear these things all the time.

And I used to watch all sorts of movies, so I, I love watching movies and yes,

quite often movies that you watched as a kid can resonate.

They can be there all the time in your mind.

They might even influence you to do something with your life. Who knows?

Yes. You only use the phrase felled if it's been cut down artificially.
