Learn 'Light' and 'Dark' English words - Speak English with Misterduncan

Here are two words that  are opposite to each other, 

إليك كلمتين متعارضتين،

but can be used in many interesting ways

لكن يمكن استخدامهما بعدة طرق مثيرة للاهتمام

when expressing your feelings in English.

عند التعبير عن مشاعرك باللغة الإنجليزية.

The words are ‘light’ and ‘dark’.

الكلمات هي "النور" و "الظلام".

We can use the word light to express brightness.

يمكننا استخدام كلمة ضوء للتعبير عن السطوع.

A light is shining.

ضوء يضيء.

A bright light can be seen from far away.

يمكن رؤية ضوء ساطع من مسافة بعيدة.

The word light can be used  as both a noun and a verb.

يمكن استخدام كلمة ضوء كاسم وفعل.

You might light a fire.

قد تشعل النار.

To start a fire or ignite  something that creates fire  

إن إشعال النار أو إشعال شيء يولد النار

is ‘light’. (verb)

هو "نور". (فعل)

As the fire burns, there is light being produced by the flames of the fire.

بينما تشتعل النار، هناك ضوء يصدر من لهيب النار.

As a phrase, we can describe something as being ‘as light as a feather’.

كعبارة، يمكننا وصف شيء ما بأنه "خفيف مثل الريشة".

In this sentence, we are using the  word light to mean ‘not heavy’.

في هذه الجملة، نستخدم كلمة خفيف لتعني "غير ثقيل".

Something has very little weight.

هناك شيء له وزن قليل جدًا.

So the word light can also be used to mean a thing 

لذلك يمكن أيضًا استخدام كلمة "خفيف" للإشارة إلى الشيء

that has no weight, or is  easy to pick up and carry.

الذي ليس له وزن، أو يسهل التقاطه وحمله.

It is as light as a feather.

انها خفيفة مثل الريشة.

A person's mood can be described as light if they appear relaxed and calm.

يمكن وصف مزاج الشخص بأنه خفيف إذا بدا مسترخياً وهادئاً.

A gentle breeze can be described as ‘light’.

يمكن وصف النسيم اللطيف بأنه "خفيف".

A light breeze can be very relaxing.

النسيم الخفيف يمكن أن يكون مريحًا للغاية.

You might find yourself feeling light-headed.

قد تجد نفسك تشعر بالدوار.

To feel dizziness can be  described as feeling light-headed

يمكن وصف الشعور بالدوخة بأنه الشعور بالدوخة

On the road, we can describe  the movement of cars as ‘light’,

على الطريق، ويمكننا وصف حركة السيارات بأنها "خفيفة"،

if there are very few vehicles travelling on that particular highway.

إذا كان هناك عدد قليل جدًا من المركبات التي تسير على هذا الطريق السريع المحدد.

There is light traffic.

هناك حركة مرور خفيفة.

The opposite of ‘light’ is ‘dark’.

وعكس "النور" هو "الظلام".

A light room. A dark alley.

غرفة مضيئة. زقاق مظلم.

The opposite of light when  expressing weight is heavy.

عكس الضوء عند التعبير عن الوزن فهو ثقيل.

A light parcel.

طرد خفيف.

A heavy box.

صندوق ثقيل.

Then we have the opposite  of light, which is ‘dark’,

ثم لدينا عكس الضوء، وهو "الظلام"،

in the sense of there being very little light.

بمعنى أن الضوء قليل جدًا.

A dark place is ‘dim’.

المكان المظلم هو "خافت".

There is almost no light there.

لا يوجد ضوء تقريبًا هناك.

We can also use the word ‘dark’ to express a sad feeling or mood.

يمكننا أيضًا استخدام كلمة "مظلم" للتعبير عن شعور أو مزاج حزين.

A dark day might refer to the mood of that particular time.

قد يشير اليوم المظلم إلى الحالة المزاجية في ذلك الوقت بالذات.

A terrible event occurring might lead to that particular day being described as ‘dark’.

قد يؤدي وقوع حدث رهيب إلى وصف ذلك اليوم بالذات بأنه "مظلم".

A scary story can also be described as ‘dark’.

يمكن أيضًا وصف القصة المخيفة بأنها "مظلمة".

The story has some unpleasant moments, or the theme of the story might concern a terrible event.

تحتوي القصة على بعض اللحظات غير السارة، أو قد يكون موضوع القصة يتعلق بحدث فظيع.

Darkness is the state of being without light, or the lack of happiness and joy.

الظلام هو حالة عدم وجود ضوء، أو انعدام السعادة والفرح.

There is darkness in his soul.

هناك ظلمة في روحه.

Darkness fell across the land.

سقط الظلام على الأرض.

A particular tone or colour of something can be described as ‘dark’...

يمكن وصف درجة أو لون معين لشيء ما بأنه "داكن"...

Dark red. Dark blue Dark green.

أحمر داكن. أزرق غامق أخضر غامق.

As a phrase, we might keep someone in the dark about a particular thing.

كعبارة، قد نبقي شخصًا ما في حالة جهل بشأن شيء معين.

To hold back certain information from others can be described as ‘keeping them in the dark’.

يمكن وصف حجب بعض المعلومات عن الآخرين بأنه "إبقائهم في الظلام".

Generally speaking, light  and dark are opposite words.

بشكل عام، الضوء والظلام كلمتان متضادتان.

‘Light’ is often expressed as something good,

غالبًا ما يتم التعبير عن "النور" على أنه شيء جيد،

whilst ‘dark’ can be used to  express something evil or wicked.

To fully discuss a certain topic might require one to observe the light and the dark.
