Learn 'Light' and 'Dark' English words - Speak English with Misterduncan

Here are two words that  are opposite to each other,

The words are ‘light’ and ‘dark’.

2 つの単語を紹介します。 言葉は「光」と「闇」です。

We can use the word light to express brightness.

明るさを表すのに光という言葉を使うことができます。

A light is shining.

光が輝いています。

A bright light can be seen from far away.

遠くからでも明るい光が見えます。

The word light can be used  as both a noun and a verb.

light という単語は名詞としても動詞としても使用できます。

You might light a fire.

火をつけるかも知れません。

To start a fire or ignite  something that creates fire  

火を起こすこと、あるいは火を起こすものに着火すること

is ‘light’. (verb)

を「光」といいます。 (動詞)

As the fire burns, there is light being produced by the flames of the fire.

火が燃えると、火の炎によって光が生成されます。

As a phrase, we can describe something as being ‘as light as a feather’.

フレーズとして、何かを「羽のように軽い」と表現することができます。

In this sentence, we are using the  word light to mean ‘not heavy’.

この文では、「重くない」という意味で light という単語を使用しています。

Something has very little weight.

何かの重さはほとんどありません。

So the word light can also be used to mean a thing 

したがって、「軽い」という言葉は

that has no weight, or is  easy to pick up and carry.

It is as light as a feather.

A person's mood can be described as light if they appear relaxed and calm.

A gentle breeze can be described as ‘light’.

そよ風は「光」と表現できます。

A light breeze can be very relaxing.

そよ風が吹くととてもリラックスできます。

You might find yourself feeling light-headed.

めまいを感じるかもしれません。

To feel dizziness can be  described as feeling light-headed

めまいを感じることは、頭がクラクラしていると表現できます

On the road, we can describe  the movement of cars as ‘light’,

if there are very few vehicles travelling on that particular highway.

その特定の高速道路を走行する車両がほとんどない場合、車の動きを「軽い」と表現できます。

There is light traffic.

交通量は少ないです。

The opposite of ‘light’ is ‘dark’.

「光」の反対は「闇」です。

A light room. A dark alley.

The opposite of light when  expressing weight is heavy.

重さを表すときの軽いの反対は重いです。

A light parcel.

軽い小包。

A heavy box.

Then we have the opposite  of light, which is ‘dark’,

in the sense of there being very little light.

「暗闇」です 。

A dark place is ‘dim’.

暗い場所は「薄暗い」です。

There is almost no light there.

We can also use the word ‘dark’ to express a sad feeling or mood.

「暗い」という言葉を使って、悲しい感情や気分を表現することもできます。

A dark day might refer to the mood of that particular time.

A terrible event occurring might lead to that particular day being described as ‘dark’.

A scary story can also be described as ‘dark’.

The story has some unpleasant moments, or the theme of the story might concern a terrible event.

A particular tone or colour of something can be described as ‘dark’...

As a phrase, we might keep someone in the dark about a particular thing.

To hold back certain information from others can be described as ‘keeping them in the dark’.

特定の情報を他人に隠蔽することは、「他人を闇に隠す」と表現できます。

Generally speaking, light  and dark are opposite words.

一般的に、光と闇は反対の言葉です。

‘Light’ is often expressed as something good,

「光」は何か良いものとして表現されることが多いです

whilst ‘dark’ can be used to  express something evil or wicked.

が、「暗い」は何か邪悪なものを表現するために使用されることがあります。

To fully discuss a certain topic might require one to observe the light and the dark.
