Learn 'Light' and 'Dark' English words - Speak English with Misterduncan

Here are two words that  are opposite to each other,

but can be used in many interesting ways

when expressing your feelings in English.

The words are ‘light’ and ‘dark’.

We can use the word light to express brightness.

Podemos usar la palabra luz para expresar brillo.

A light is shining.

Una luz brilla.

A bright light can be seen from far away.

Una luz brillante se puede ver desde lejos.

The word light can be used  as both a noun and a verb.

La palabra luz se puede utilizar tanto como sustantivo como como verbo.

You might light a fire.

Podrías encender un fuego.

To start a fire or ignite  something that creates fire  

Iniciar un fuego o encender algo que genere fuego

is ‘light’. (verb)

As the fire burns, there is light being produced by the flames of the fire.

Mientras el fuego arde, las llamas del fuego producen luz.

As a phrase, we can describe something as being ‘as light as a feather’.

Como frase, podemos describir algo como "tan ligero como una pluma".

In this sentence, we are using the  word light to mean ‘not heavy’.

En esta oración, usamos la palabra ligero para significar "no pesado".

Something has very little weight.

Algo tiene muy poco peso.

So the word light can also be used to mean a thing

The opposite of ‘light’ is ‘dark’.

The opposite of light when  expressing weight is heavy.

Then we have the opposite  of light, which is ‘dark’,

There is almost no light there.

We can also use the word ‘dark’ to express a sad feeling or mood.

A dark day might refer to the mood of that particular time.

A terrible event occurring might lead to that particular day being described as ‘dark’.
