Learn 'Light' and 'Dark' English words - Speak English with Misterduncan

Here are two words that  are opposite to each other, 

ต่อไปนี้เป็นคำสองคำที่ตรงข้ามกัน

but can be used in many interesting ways

แต่สามารถนำมาใช้ในรูปแบบที่น่าสนใจมากมาย

when expressing your feelings in English.

เมื่อแสดงความรู้สึกเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ

The words are ‘light’ and ‘dark’.

คำว่า 'สว่าง' และ 'มืด'

We can use the word light to express brightness.

เราสามารถใช้คำว่าแสงเพื่อแสดงความสว่างได้

A light is shining.

มีแสงสว่างส่องเข้ามา

A bright light can be seen from far away.

มองเห็นแสงสว่างมาแต่ไกล

The word light can be used  as both a noun and a verb.

คำว่า light สามารถใช้เป็นทั้งคำนามและกริยาได้

You might light a fire.

คุณอาจจะจุดไฟ

To start a fire or ignite  something that creates fire  

การจุดไฟหรือจุดไฟสิ่งที่ก่อให้เกิดไฟ

is ‘light’. (verb)

คือ 'แสง' (กริยา)

As the fire burns, there is light being produced by the flames of the fire.

ขณะที่ไฟลุกอยู่ ก็เกิดแสงสว่างจากเปลวเพลิง.

As a phrase, we can describe something as being ‘as light as a feather’.

เป็นวลี เราสามารถอธิบายบางสิ่งบางอย่างว่า 'เบาเหมือนขนนก'

In this sentence, we are using the  word light to mean ‘not heavy’.

ในประโยคนี้ เราใช้คำว่า light เพื่อหมายถึง 'ไม่หนัก'

Something has very little weight.

บางสิ่งบางอย่างมีน้ำหนักน้อยมาก

So the word light can also be used to mean a thing 

ดังนั้นคำว่าแสงยังสามารถใช้เพื่อหมายถึงสิ่งของ

that has no weight, or is  easy to pick up and carry.

ที่ไม่มีน้ำหนักหรือหยิบและพกพาได้ง่าย

It is as light as a feather.

มันเบาเหมือนขนนก

A person's mood can be described as light if they appear relaxed and calm.

อารมณ์ของบุคคลสามารถอธิบายได้ว่าเป็นแสงสว่างหากพวกเขาดูผ่อนคลายและสงบ

A gentle breeze can be described as ‘light’.

สายลมที่อ่อนโยนสามารถอธิบายได้ว่าเป็น 'แสง'

A light breeze can be very relaxing.

สายลมเบาๆ ก็สามารถผ่อนคลายได้มาก

You might find yourself feeling light-headed.

คุณอาจพบว่าตัวเองรู้สึกเวียนหัว

To feel dizziness can be  described as feeling light-headed

การรู้สึกวิงเวียนศีรษะสามารถอธิบายได้ว่าเป็นความรู้สึกมึนหัว

On the road, we can describe  the movement of cars as ‘light’,

บนท้องถนนเราสามารถอธิบายการเคลื่อนที่ของรถยนต์ว่า 'เบา'

if there are very few vehicles travelling on that particular highway.

ถ้ามียานพาหนะน้อยมากที่สัญจรบนทางหลวงสายนั้น

There is light traffic.

มีการจราจรเบาบาง

The opposite of ‘light’ is ‘dark’.

สิ่งที่ตรงกันข้ามกับ 'แสง' คือ 'ความมืด'

A light room. A dark alley.

ห้องสว่าง. ซอยมืด.

The opposite of light when  expressing weight is heavy.

สิ่งที่ตรงกันข้ามกับแสงเมื่อแสดงน้ำหนักคือหนัก

A light parcel.

พัสดุเบา.

A heavy box.

กล่องหนัก.

Then we have the opposite  of light, which is ‘dark’,

จากนั้น เราก็มีสิ่งที่ตรงกันข้ามกับแสง ซึ่งก็คือ 'ความมืด'

in the sense of there being very little light.

ในแง่ที่ว่าแสงมีน้อยมาก

A dark place is ‘dim’.

สถานที่มืดคือ 'สลัว'

There is almost no light there.

ที่นั่นแทบไม่มีแสงสว่างเลย

We can also use the word ‘dark’ to express a sad feeling or mood.

นอกจากนี้เรายังสามารถใช้คำว่า 'ความมืด' เพื่อแสดงความรู้สึกหรืออารมณ์เศร้าได้

A dark day might refer to the mood of that particular time.

วันที่มืดมนอาจหมายถึงอารมณ์ในช่วงเวลานั้น

A terrible event occurring might lead to that particular day being described as ‘dark’.

เหตุการณ์เลวร้ายที่เกิดขึ้นอาจทำให้วันนั้นถูกเรียกว่า 'ความมืด'

A scary story can also be described as ‘dark’.

เรื่องราวที่น่ากลัวสามารถอธิบายได้ว่าเป็น 'ความมืด'

The story has some unpleasant moments, or the theme of the story might concern a terrible event.

เรื่องราวมีช่วงเวลาที่ไม่พึงประสงค์ หรือแก่นของเรื่องอาจเกี่ยวข้องกับเหตุการณ์เลวร้าย

Darkness is the state of being without light, or the lack of happiness and joy.

ความมืดคือสภาวะที่ไม่มีแสงสว่างหรือขาดความสุขและปีติ

There is darkness in his soul.

มีความมืดอยู่ในจิตวิญญาณของเขา

Darkness fell across the land.

ความมืดปกคลุมทั่วแผ่นดิน

A particular tone or colour of something can be described as ‘dark’...

โทนสีหรือสีของบางสิ่งบางอย่างสามารถอธิบายได้ว่า 'เข้ม'...

Dark red. Dark blue Dark green.

สีแดงเข้ม น้ำเงินเข้ม เขียวเข้ม.

As a phrase, we might keep someone in the dark about a particular thing.

ตามวลี เราอาจปกปิดบางคนเกี่ยวกับเรื่องใดเรื่องหนึ่งโดยเฉพาะ

To hold back certain information from others can be described as ‘keeping them in the dark’.

การปกปิดข้อมูลบางอย่างจากผู้อื่นสามารถอธิบายได้ว่าเป็น 'การเก็บพวกเขาไว้ในความมืด'

Generally speaking, light  and dark are opposite words.

โดยทั่วไปแล้ว แสงสว่างและความมืดเป็นคำที่ตรงกันข้าม

‘Light’ is often expressed as something good,

'แสงสว่าง' มักแสดงออกมาว่าเป็นสิ่งที่ดี

whilst ‘dark’ can be used to  express something evil or wicked.
