Learn 'Light' and 'Dark' English words - Speak English with Misterduncan

Here are two words that  are opposite to each other, 

Aqui estão duas palavras que são opostas,

but can be used in many interesting ways

when expressing your feelings in English.

The words are ‘light’ and ‘dark’.

As palavras são ‘claro’ e ‘escuro’.

We can use the word light to express brightness.

Podemos usar a palavra luz para expressar brilho.

A light is shining.

Uma luz está brilhando.

A bright light can be seen from far away.

Uma luz brilhante pode ser vista de longe.

The word light can be used  as both a noun and a verb.

A palavra luz pode ser usada tanto como substantivo quanto como verbo.

You might light a fire.

Você pode acender uma fogueira.

To start a fire or ignite  something that creates fire  

Iniciar um incêndio ou acender algo que cria fogo

is ‘light’. (verb)

é ‘luz’. (verbo)

As the fire burns, there is light being produced by the flames of the fire.

À medida que o fogo queima, há luz sendo produzida pelas chamas do fogo.

As a phrase, we can describe something as being ‘as light as a feather’.

Como frase, podemos descrever algo como sendo “leve como uma pena”.

In this sentence, we are using the  word light to mean ‘not heavy’.

Something has very little weight.

So the word light can also be used to mean a thing

On the road, we can describe  the movement of cars as ‘light’,

The opposite of ‘light’ is ‘dark’.

The opposite of light when  expressing weight is heavy.

Then we have the opposite  of light, which is ‘dark’,

A particular tone or colour of something can be described as ‘dark’...

As a phrase, we might keep someone in the dark about a particular thing.

To hold back certain information from others can be described as ‘keeping them in the dark’.

Generally speaking, light  and dark are opposite words.

‘Light’ is often expressed as something good,

whilst ‘dark’ can be used to  express something evil or wicked.
