Learn 'Light' and 'Dark' English words - Speak English with Misterduncan

Here are two words that  are opposite to each other, 

서로 반대이지만

but can be used in many interesting ways

영어로 자신의 감정을 표현할 때

when expressing your feelings in English.

여러 가지 흥미로운 방식으로 사용될 수 있는

The words are ‘light’ and ‘dark’.

두 단어가 있습니다. '빛'과 '어두움'이라는 단어가 있습니다.

We can use the word light to express brightness.

밝기를 표현하기 위해 빛이라는 단어를 사용할 수 있습니다.

A light is shining.

빛이 빛나고 있습니다.

A bright light can be seen from far away.

멀리서도 밝은 빛이 보입니다.

The word light can be used  as both a noun and a verb.

빛이라는 단어는 명사와 동사로 모두 사용될 수 있습니다.

You might light a fire.

불을 피울 수도 있습니다.

To start a fire or ignite  something that creates fire  

불을 피우거나 불을 일으키는 것을 점화하는 것은

is ‘light’. (verb)

'빛'입니다. (동사)

As the fire burns, there is light being produced by the flames of the fire.

불이 타면서 불의 불꽃에 의해 빛이 나옵니다.

As a phrase, we can describe something as being ‘as light as a feather’.

한마디로 '깃털처럼 가볍다'라고 표현할 수 있습니다.

In this sentence, we are using the  word light to mean ‘not heavy’.

이 문장에서 우리는 '무겁지 않다'는 뜻으로 light라는 단어를 사용하고 있습니다.

Something has very little weight.

뭔가 무게가 아주 적습니다.

So the word light can also be used to mean a thing 

따라서 빛이라는 단어는

that has no weight, or is  easy to pick up and carry.

무게가 없거나 들고 다니기 쉬운 것을 의미하는 데에도 사용될 수 있습니다

It is as light as a feather.

. 깃털처럼 가볍습니다.

A person's mood can be described as light if they appear relaxed and calm.

사람의 기분이 편안하고 차분해 보인다면 그 사람의 기분은 밝다고 할 수 있습니다.

A gentle breeze can be described as ‘light’.

부드러운 바람은 '가벼움'이라고 표현할 수 있습니다.

A light breeze can be very relaxing.

가벼운 바람은 매우 편안할 수 있습니다.

You might find yourself feeling light-headed.

어지러움을 느끼는 자신을 발견할 수도 있습니다.

To feel dizziness can be  described as feeling light-headed

현기증을 느끼는 것은 현기증을 느끼는 것으로 설명할 수 있습니다.

On the road, we can describe  the movement of cars as ‘light’,

if there are very few vehicles travelling on that particular highway.

특정 고속도로를 주행하는 차량이 거의 없는 경우 자동차의 움직임을 '가벼움'으로 설명할 수 있습니다.

There is light traffic.

교통량이 적습니다.

The opposite of ‘light’ is ‘dark’.

'빛'의 반대말은 '어두움'이다.

A light room. A dark alley.

밝은 방. 어두운 골목.

The opposite of light when  expressing weight is heavy.

무게를 표현할 때 빛의 반대말은 무겁다.

A light parcel.

가벼운 소포.

A heavy box.

무거운 상자.

Then we have the opposite  of light, which is ‘dark’,

그러면 빛의 반대말인 '어두움'이 있습니다.

in the sense of there being very little light.

빛이 거의 없다는 의미입니다.

A dark place is ‘dim’.

어두운 곳은 '어둡다'.

There is almost no light there.

거기에는 빛이 거의 없습니다.

We can also use the word ‘dark’ to express a sad feeling or mood.

슬픈 감정이나 기분을 표현하기 위해 'dark'라는 단어를 사용할 수도 있습니다.

A dark day might refer to the mood of that particular time.

어두운 날은 그 특정 시간의 분위기를 나타낼 수 있습니다.

A terrible event occurring might lead to that particular day being described as ‘dark’.

끔찍한 사건이 발생하면 특정 날이 '어두운' 날로 묘사될 수 있습니다.

A scary story can also be described as ‘dark’.

무서운 이야기는 '어두운' 이야기라고도 할 수 있습니다.

The story has some unpleasant moments, or the theme of the story might concern a terrible event.

이야기에는 불쾌한 순간이 있을 수도 있고, 이야기의 주제가 끔찍한 사건과 관련될 수도 있습니다.

Darkness is the state of being without light, or the lack of happiness and joy.

어둠은 빛이 없는 상태, 즉 행복과 기쁨이 부족한 상태입니다.

There is darkness in his soul.

그의 영혼에는 어둠이 있습니다.

Darkness fell across the land.

어둠이 온 땅을 덮었습니다.

A particular tone or colour of something can be described as ‘dark’...

특정 톤이나 사물의 색상은 '어두운'...

Dark red. Dark blue Dark green.

진한 빨간색으로 설명할 수 있습니다. 진한 파란색 진한 녹색.

As a phrase, we might keep someone in the dark about a particular thing.

한 마디로, 우리는 특정 일에 대해 누군가를 어둠 속에 머물게 할 수도 있습니다.

To hold back certain information from others can be described as ‘keeping them in the dark’.

다른 사람으로부터 특정 정보를 숨기는 것은 '그 정보를 어둠 속에 두는 것'으로 설명할 수 있습니다.

Generally speaking, light  and dark are opposite words.

일반적으로 말하면, 빛과 어둠은 반대되는 단어입니다.

‘Light’ is often expressed as something good,

'빛'은 종종 좋은 것을 표현하는 데 사용되는

whilst ‘dark’ can be used to  express something evil or wicked.

To fully discuss a certain topic might require one to observe the light and the dark.
