In today's video we're going to look at phrasal verbs using the verb: "bring".

Once again, phrasal verbs: A verb and a preposition that together have a very different meaning

مجددا : فعل و حرف جر معا يملكان معنى مختلف تماما عن

than the words by themselves, sometimes more than one meaning, as we're going to see here.

الكلمات نفسها , احيانا لديها اكثر من معنى واحد كما سوف نرى

So we're going to look at: "bring up", "bring about", "bring around", "bring back",

سننظر الى bring up و bring about ; bring around , bring back

"bring down", "bring in", "bring on", "bring off", and "bring to".

bring down , bring in " bring on " bring off " و "bring to

These are the ones we're going to look at today.

هذه سنراها اليوم

And again, each of them has at least one meaning, sometimes...

مجددا و كل واحدة لديها على الأقل معنى واحد

More often than not, more than one meaning.

أحيانا أكثر من معنى واحد

So: "bring up", a few meanings to this one.

إذا bring up عدة معاني لها

The most commonly used one is to bring up something means to raise, but not raise like

أكثرها استخداما bring up أي لترفع شيئا ما لكن ليس ك...

physically, raise in terms of conversation.

ليس بشكل مادي , بخصوص النقاش

So if we're going to talk...

بالنظر إلى الحديث

We're going to have a conversation and I want to talk about something specific, I'm going

سوف نتناقش و أنا أريد التحدث عن شيء محدد لذى سوف

to find an opportunity to bring it up in conversation.

أجد فرصة لتطرق لهذا في المحادثة

So I'm going to raise that topic, and we're going to talk about it, and it's going to

أنا سأرفع هذا الموضوع , و سوف نتحدث عنه

be the focus of the conversation.

و سوف تصبح محور الحديث

So if you're going to a meeting with your boss and you're thinking:

إذا كنت ستلتقي مديرك , و انت تظن

"Oh, it's time for my promotion",

اوه انه و قت ترقيتي

somehow you'll find a way to bring it up into the conversation and eventually

بطرية ما ستجد طريقة لتتطرق لها اثناء الحديث في النهاية

talk about it.

و الحديث عنها

You can also bring up a child.

كما أيضا يمكنك أن تربي طفل bring up

So you can raise a child, that's the one...

و يمكنك رعاية طفل (باستخدام فعل raise )

The verb most people use about children, you raise children, but you also bring them up.

و هذا الفعل معظم الناس تستحدمه عن الأطفال raise و انت ايضا ترعاهم bring them up

Now, it doesn't mean that you physically lift them.

هذا لا يعني بانك قد تركتهم حتى يكبروا بشكل عملي

It means you educate them, you feed them, you teach them about life, you prepare them

هذا يعني انك تعلمهم و تطعمهم و تعلمهم عن الحياة ، انك تحضرهم

for the world they're going to live in.

لأجل الدنيا التي سيعيشوها

Okay? So you bring them up.

حسنا ، أنت ترعاهم

Another thing sometimes people use "bring up" is to throw up, puke, vomit.

شيئ آخر أحيانا الناس يستخدمون( bring up ) كيتقيئ ، يستفرغ

So, today I had a really bad lunch.

اليوم تناولت غدائا سيئا

I hope I don't bring it up all over this video.

آمل أن لا أتقيئه على هذا الفيديو

But I won't. Don't worry, I'm okay.

لكن لن أفعل ، لا تقلقوا أنا بخير

I had a nice lunch.

تناولت غدائا جيدا

So: "bring up" sometimes used as vomit.

إذا (bring up ) تستخدم كيتقيئ

There's too many slang words for vomit.

يوجد العديد من الكلمات العامية ليتقيئ

"Bring about", two meanings for this one.

( bring about ) لديها معنيان

One is to cause to happen.

واحد تعني ، يتسبب ب أو يحصل / يحدث

Okay?

تمام ؟

So something...

إذا شيئا ما ....

One situation exists, this situation will likely bring about this result.

ظرف معين موجود ، هذا الظرف على الأرجح سيؤدي إلى هذه النتيجة

Okay?

تمام ؟

If we talk about military spending, so the government has decided to go to war in this

إذا تحدثنا عن التكاليف العسكرية إذا الحكومة قررت لتذهب إلى الحرب في هذا الجزء من العالم

part of the world, but all the major economists are warning that this war will bring about

لكن الخبراء الإقتصاديين يحذرون بأن هذه الحرب ستؤدي

the destruction of our country economically.

دمار بلادنا إقتصاديا

Okay?

تمام ؟

The war will bring about economic hardships to this country.

الحرب ستتسبب بصعوبات إقتصادية لهذه الدولة

We can't afford it.

ليس بمقدورنا تحملها

So: "bring about".

هذه bring about

Now, a little side note, not really anything to do with phrasals, but I know all of you

الأن ملاحظة جانبية صغيرة ، ليس لها علاقة بالأفعال الإنفصالية ، لكن جميعكم

think of the words: "effect" and "affect".

تفكرون بالكلمتين "effect" و "affect"

A...

"A" is the verb, "e" is the noun, but

A هو الفعل و e" هو الأسم

"effect" with an "e" is the same as "bring about",

effect مع "e" نفس معنى "bring about"

it means cause to happen.

إنها تعني يتسبب أو يحصل

This is a verb.

هذا هو الفعل

So "e" can be a verb and a noun, "a" can be a verb and a noun, but that's a whole other lesson.

إذا "e" يمكن أن تكون فعل و يمكن أن تكون أسم "a" يمكن ان تكون اسم او فعل لكن هذا درس مختلف كليا

"Bring about", "effect", same meaning.

bring aboutt و effect نفس المعنى

Okay.

"Bring around".

تمام

bring around

Oh, sorry. Another "bring about".

اوه آسف ، واحدة أخرى

If you're ever on a ship and you need to turn that ship and bring it back to the port, then

إذا كنت على سفينة و أنت بحاجة إلى أن تدير السفينة، و ترجعها إلى الميناء ، إذا

you have to bring it about.

أنت بحاجة إلى bring about

Basically means turn around.

بالأساس إنها تعني الإنعطاف

But we use this mostly with ships, bring about.

لكن نستخدمها غالبا مع السفن bring about

Okay. "Bring around", a few meanings to this as well.

bring around عدة معاني كذلك

"Bring around" basically means to revive someone.

bring around أساسا تعني أيقذ / أحيا صحّى

So somebody is passed out, they fainted or whatever happened, they're lying on the ground,

شخص ما مغمى أو مغشي عليه أو مُستلقي أرضاً على كل حال

they look like asleep.

يبدو و طأنه نأماً

You're trying to bring them around, means recover consciousness.

أنت تحاول أن تيقذه، تجعله يستعيد الوعي

Okay?

"Bring around" means also bring a friend over to meet other friends, like a casual visit.

تمام

bring around تعني أيضا أن تجلب صديقاً لعندك لكي تلتقو أصدقائاً آخرون كزيارة غير رسمية

And the most common use: If you have a very set opinion about something and I have a very

أكثرها شيوعاً ، اذا كان لديك رأي متجاوب حيال شيئ ما

different opinion, I will do my best to bring you around to my opinion.

و أنا لدي رأي مغاير تماما ، سأبذل قصار جهدي لأقناعك برأيي

So I want to persuade you, I want to make you change your mind and bring you around

إذا أنا اريد اقناعك , أريد أن أغير رآيك و إقناعك ( bring you about )

to view the situation from the way I view it, from my perspective.

إلى منظور الى الوضع , من حيث أنا أراه من وجهة نظري

So I'm going to bring you around to my point of view.

إذا انا سوف احضرك الى وجهة نظري الشخصية

That's the most common use of "bring around".

هذا هو الاستخدام الاكثر شيوعا ل ( bring around )

"Bring back", so, again, there's the literal bring back.

Bring back ," إذا مجددا حرفيا تعني (يعيد , يرجع الشيئ)

So you bought something from a store, you took it home, like a shirt, you tried it on,

أنت احضرت شيئا من المتجر , انت اخذته الى البيت مثل القميص الذي جربته

you realize: "You know what? I don't like it."

انت تدرك , اتعلم ماذا ؟ لا يعجبني

So you bring it back to the store.

ثم تعيدها الى المتجر

Now you can also say: "take it back", but technically you're taking it with you, so

الن يمكنك القول " take it back " لكن عمليا انت تأخذه معك إذا

you're bringing it back to the store.

انت تعيده الى المتجر

Now, sometimes, people, especially celebrities, they try to bring back something that used

الان , احيانا الناس , خصوصا المشاهير , يحاولون ان يعيدوا شيئا معتاد

to be very popular.

لتكن كثير الشعبية

So if I started wearing, like, fur coats, and everybody thinks:

اذا بدأتُ بارتداء مثلا معاطف فرو و الجميع يفكر

"Oh, this guy is so cool and so popular", then everybody starts to bring...

هذا الشخص جدا رائع جميع الناس تعود

To wear fur coats.

للبس معاطف فرو

So I brought back the fur coat.

اذا انا اعدت موضة ارتداء المعاطف الفروية

Okay?

حسنا

So, try to make something old popular again.

اذا محاول جعل شيئ قديم شعبيا مرة اخرى

For example, for many, many years people have tried to bring back disco, but you can never

على سبيل المثال منذ العديد من السنين حاولت احياء الديسكو لكن لن تستطع ابدا

bring back disco.

احياء الديسكو

Disco died when it died, and that's where it's going to stay.

الديسكو انقرض عندما انقرض و هنا حيث سيرقد

"Bring down", a few meanings here.

Bring down " العديد من المعاني هنا

First of all we're going to talk about collapse.

أولا سنتحدث عن الانهيار

Now, it can be a physical thing, it can be a person.

يمكنها انت تكون شيئا فيزيائيا يمكن ان تكون شخصا

So if you bring down a building, means you maybe blow it up and the whole building comes

اذا هدمت مبنى , يعني ربما تفجره , كامل المبنى سينزل للاسفل

down so you bring it down, you blow it up.

انت تهدمه انت تفجره

You can also bring down a person.

يمكنك ايضا ان تنزل شخصا

So if you create a scandal, let's say especially politicians, celebrities, they're in a very

اذا خلقت فضيحة , لنقل خصوصا السياسين , المشاهير هم في منزلة جدا عالية

high position, very high level, if you tell them:

مرحلة جدا عالية , اذا قلت لهم

"Oh, this man cheated on his wife with 20 women",

هذا الرجل يخون زوجته مع عشرين إمرأة

you're bringing him down, you're destroying his reputation and his position,

أنت تنزله إلى الأسفل انت تدمر سمعته و منزلته

and his stature, status, etc.

و مكانته , مركزه إلخ....

"Bring down" means also to depress.

Bring down تعني ايضا لتحبط أو تكئب

So we're all having a good time, I'm with my friends, we're at a bar, we're having a

نحن في الحانة نمضي وقتا جيدا , انا مع اصدقائي في الحانة

few drinks, and somebody starts talking about politics.

لديا بعض المشروبات و احدا ما يبدأ الحديث بالسياسة

We say: "Oh, you're bringing us down. Leave it alone.

نحن نقول انت تجعلنا غير مسرورين دعنا و شأننا

We're here to have a good time. Not to be too serious."

نحن هنا لنمضي وقتا جيدا , لا لنكن جدا جديين

So to bring people down or to bring someone down means to be depressing.

اذا لتجعل الناس مستاؤون او لتحبط الناس

Okay.

حسنا

You can also bring someone down to earth, but this is more of an idiom.

يمكنك ايضا ان تنزل شخصىا الى الارض لكن هذا اكثر من مصطلح

If somebody thinks very highly of themselves, you...

اذا شخص ما يفكر بنفسه على انه في مرتبة عالية

You tell them the reality, that they're not that special.

انت تقول له الحقيقة بانه ليس في مرتبة مميزة

They're just like everybody else, so you bring them down from their high position.

اي انه مثل اي شخص اخر , اذا انت تنزله من مرتبته العليا

"Bring in", a few meanings here as well.

Bring in " العديد من المعاني كذلك الامر

"Bring in", so my friend is outside or my dog is outside and he's really cold, so I

Bring in ", اذا صديقي في الخارج او كلبي في الخارج و هو فعلا يشعر بالبرد

bring him in.

اذا انا ادخله

Inside.

الى الداخل

So that's the literal, bring indoors.

هذا حرفيا , احضره الى الداخل

"Bring in" can also mean arrest.

Bring in " يمكن ايضا ان تكون (يعتقل)

So the police are chasing the suspect, somebody committed murder, the police chase him, and

الشرطة تتعقب المشتبه به احدهم ارتكب جريمة الشرطة تتعقبه

they want to bring him in.

يريدون اعتقاله

It means they want to arrest this person.

انها تعني يريدون اعتقال هذا الشخص

I hope you know this word: "arrest".

امل ان تعرفوا هذه الكلمة " arrest'

So: "to bring in" means to arrest.

to bring in تعني يعتقل

Another meaning of "bring in", I work at a very good company and my friend just lost

معنى اخر ل Bring in انا اعمل في شركة جيدة جدا و صديقي فقد عمله

his job, so I want to bring him in.

و انا اريد ان احضره

It means I want to bring him into my company and get him a job at the same company as me.

انها تعني انا اريده في شركتي و اعطائه وظيفة في نفس الشركة مثلي

So sometimes they...

احيناً هم

My bosses will let me bring somebody in who's good, sometimes not.

رؤسائي يدعوني احضر شخصا الى الداخل شخص جيد او احيانا ليس جيد

"Bring in", okay.

Bring in حسنا

"Bring on", now, this can also mean you can bring someone...

Bring in حسنا هذا ممكن ان يعني ايضا يمكنك احضار شخصا ما

I'm going to put it in a bracket, here.

ساضع قوساً هنا

Now, the same meaning as "in", "bring someone in" means introduce them into the company.

الان نفس المعنى كما In Bring someone in تعني ان تقدمه للشركة

You can bring someone on board.

يمكنك احضار شخص الى المجلس

So I'm the boss, so this time I don't have to ask anybody, I can just take my friend

اذا انا الرئيس , هذا الوقت انا لست مضطرا لأسأل احد يمكنني فقط اخذ صديقي

and bring him on board.

انا احضره الى المجلس

It means I give him a job, I introduce him to the company, and that's how he gets employed.

انها تعني انني اعطيه عملاً, انا اقدمه الى الشركة و هكذا يتم توظيفه

Now, a more common expression is: "bring it on".

الان التعبير الاكثر شيوعا هو bring it on

Now, I'm not sure if any of you used to watch the news when President Bush, the younger

الان انا لست متأكد اذا احدا منكم اعتاد متابعة الاخبار عندما الرئيس بوش الاصغر

Bush was president and he said: "If anybody's going to...

بوش كان رئيسا و هو قال : اذا احدما مقدمّ على ..

If anybody wants to threaten America, bring it on."

اذا احدّما مقدما على تهديد امريكا إذا , bring it on "

So he's very tough, yeah, like: "I'm going to fight you".

هو جداً قاسي مثلا انا سوف اقاتلك

"Bring it on" means basically I'm not afraid of you.

Bring it on تعني بالاساس انا لا اخشاك

Bring whatever challenge you want to me, and I will face it.

احضرلي اي تحدٍ تريده و انا سأواجهه

Okay? So this is a very common expression: "bring it on".

حسنا هذا هو التعبير الاكثر شيوعا ل bring it on

Quite often people will just say: "Bring it".

مرات ستقول الناس Bring it "

"Bring it" means "bring it on", means: "Challenge me.

Bring it " تعني bring it on تعني تحداني

I will fight you. I will win.

سأقاتلك , سأنتصر

I'm the best", because that's how they think.

انا الافضل , لانه هكذا يعتقدون

"Bring off", to bring something off means to do it successfully.

Bring off" to bring something off تعني لتنجزه بنجاح

Okay? So, I hired my friend again to organize my party and she really brought it off.

حسنا , انا وظفتُ صديقتي لينظم حفلتي و هي انجزتها فعلا بنجاح

The party was amazing, everybody loved it, and a few of my friends asked me for her number

الحفلة كانت مدهشة الجميع احبها و العديد من اصدقائي طلبوا مني رقمها

so they...

انهم...

She can plan their party as well.

تستطيع التخطيط لحفلاتهم كذلك

So she really brought it off.

لقد انزجتها بنجاح

She did something successfully.

لقد فعلت شيئا بنجاح

Now, you can also talk about, like, when somebody's dressed, so...

يمكنك ايضا التحدث عن ,مثلا شخصما يرتدي هكذا

Like let's say Lady Gaga.

لنقل مثلا ليدي جاجا

I think everybody knows Lady Gaga.

اعتقد الجميع يعرف ليدي جاجا

Sometimes her clothes are a little bit, you know, crazy, but somehow she's able to bring

احيانا ملابسها قليلا مجنونة لكن بطريقة ما تستطيع ان تجعلها تنجح

it off, means she's able to wear it so it actually looks good and people think she did

يعني هي قادرة على ان تلبس هكذا تبدو جيدة و الناس تعتقد

a very good job of it.

انها فعلت شيئ رائع

Okay, so now we're going to look at "bring to".

حسنا سننظر الان الى "bring to "

Now, "bring to" mostly is used with other words.

"bring to " غالبا تستخدم مع كلمات اخرى

By itself, "bring to" means to try to revive someone.

لوحدها تعني لتحي شيئا ما

So, again, somebody passed out, you're...

شخصا اغمي عليه

They're lying there fainted, so you're trying to wake them up, give them...

هم يكذبون انهم مغمى عليهم انتى تحاول ان تيقظهم انتجعلهم

Regain consciousness.

يستعيدوا الوعي

More commonly we use "bring to" with other words.

عادتا نستخدم "bring to " مع كلمات اخرى

So, for example: "bring to mind".

على سبيل المثال

So: "bring to mind" means you're trying to get an idea into someone's head.

"bring to mind " تعني انك تحاول ان توصل فكرة الى رأس احدهم

You want them to start thinking about it, so you bring it to mind, or you remind them

تريد ان تجعلهم يفكرون حوله تجعله يفكر أو تذكرهم

or you hint at it.

او انت تلمح

Or something brings something to your mind, means it makes you remember or makes you think

او شيئ يجلب شيئ لرأسك تعني ان تجعك تتذكر او تجعلك تفكر

about something you haven't thought about in a long time.

حول شيئ لم تفكر به قط منذ وقت طويل

We also have another expression: "bring to light".

لدينا ايضا تعبير اخر "bring to light " يجلبه الى النور

If you bring something to light, means before it was in the darkness, it means nobody knew

اذا جلبت شيئا الى النور , تعني انها كانت من قبل في الظلام انها تعني لا احد يعلم

about it. It was, like, hidden.

عنها . كانت مخبئة

If you bring it to light you reveal it, you expose it.

اذا احضرتها للنور انت تكشفها انت تفضحها / تجردها

You make everybody aware.

تنبه الكل

So a newspaper journalist, for example, a newspaper reporter, their job is really to

جريدة , مجلة مثلا كاتب تقارير صحيفة عملهم ان

bring secrets to light.

يحضروا الاسرار الى النور

They want people to see what's going on.

يريدون ان ترى الناس ماذا يحصل

And one more expression, just like I'm doing right now, if you "bring someone to his knees"

و تعبير اخر , كما افعل الان "bring someone to his knees" تجعل شخص يركع على ركبتيه

or someone to...

او احداً ما

Some people to their knees, means that you dominate them.

تحضر بعض الناس الى ركبهم تعني ان تسود عليهم

You beat them.

ان تتغلب عليهم

So if you have a contest and you bring someone to their knees, like they're down, they're

اذا كان لديك منافسة وانت تجعلهم يركعون كأنهم في الاسفل

weak, they're subservient, so you weaken them at the end of the day.

هم ضعفاء , هم خاضعون , انت تضعفهم في نهاية اليوم

Okay.
