When the Flint water crisis happened in Michigan,

And I didn't think that this would actually do much of anything.

And that's when it struck me like, oh no.

These people think I know what I'm doing,

And it turns out that it's all related to a process

And if you wanted to end gerrymandering,

And why this was particularly important in Michigan

For example, we had a woman

So we started thinking, how could we apply these skills?

We figured out that if we could get about 1,000 of us

And so our commission started to come together.

And I used to feel that way.

One thing that I did not remember

Jedne stvari se nisam sećala,

but ended up popping up on my social media

ali je u nekom trenutku iskočila kod mene na društvenim mrežama,

is I made almost the exact same Facebook post about a year earlier.

a to je da sam godinu dana ranije objavila potpuno isti post na Fejsbuku.

And it said like, “Hey, let’s end gerrymandering.

Glasio je: „Hej, okončajmo džerimandering.

Who wants to help?"

Ko želi da pomogne?”

And nobody even liked it.

Niko ga nije čak ni lajkovao.

And more importantly, I also didn't do anything about it.

Što je još važnije, nisam ni ja ništa preduzela.

And I think that's because I felt alone.

A mislim da je to zbog toga što sam se osećala usamljeno u tome.

I felt like, man, nobody's even liking this.

Mislila sam, čoveče, niko čak ni ne lajkuje ovo.

Like, I must be the only weirdo who wants to end gerrymandering.

Mora da sam jedini čudak koji hoće da zaustavi džerimandering.

But by the time I made that second Facebook post,

Ali kada sam ovo objavila na Fejsbuku drugi put,

what I realized was that actually,

shvatila sam da zapravo

like, a lot of us were feeling the exact same way.

We were sitting, feeling like nobody cared.

We really wanted this issue to be dealt with,

but we felt like there must be somebody else whose job it is.

There must be an expert out there.

But what I have completely learned

Međutim, sasvim mi je postalo jasno

is that you do not have to be an expert to get involved in democracy.

da ne morate biti stručnjak da biste se angažovali u procesu demokratije.

You don't need a fancy title or a PhD,

Ne treba vam prefinjena titula, niti doktorat,

you don't even have to ask permission to try.

ne treba ni da zatražite dozvolu da pokušate.

You never know where one little step will end up leading you.

Nikad ne znate gde će vas dovesti jedan mali korak koji načinite.

It might change your entire life.

Možda promeni čitav vaš život.

And I think that's really important to remember.

Mislim da je vrlo bitno zapamtiti to.

I mean, there’s a place for experts, too.

Mislim, postoji i mesto za stručnjake.

I definitely should not perform open-heart surgery on any of you.

Definitivno ne treba da vršim operacije na otvorenom srcu.

I would not be good at it.

To ne bih dobro radila.

But we are the ones who are closest to these problems.

Ali mi smo ti koji su najbliži ovim problemima.

Our communities and our kids

Naše zajednice i naša deca

are the ones who do not have clean drinking water.

su ti koji nemaju čistu pijaću vodu.

We have the most incentive to want to fix these problems,

Mi imamo najviše motivacije da rešimo te probleme,

because we live with its brokenness every single day.

jer mi živimo sa njima svakoga dana.

And we see our communities as actual communities.

Mi vidimo naše zajednice kao prave zajednice.

They are our homes.

One su naš dom.

They aren't red or blue.

Nisu crvene ili plave.

They are just us.

One su jednostavno mi.

So I hope all of you remember that when it comes to democracy,

Zato se nadam da ćete svi upamtiti da, kada je u pitanju demokratija,

all political power is inherent in the people.

celokupna politička moć pripada narodu.

We all are those people, and this is our power.

Mi smo taj narod, i ovo je naša moć.

I hope you don't forget that.

Nadam se da nećete to zaboraviti.

And you remain unafraid to create the world you want to live in.

I da ćete biti neustrašivi dok stvarate svet u kome želite da živite.
