Here is one way to begin to talk about what the pandemic,

We softened.

Chasms became un-unseeable.

Between the ways we've been living and our deepest longings

for all of our children

I've been looking back across my 20 years of listening to the world

And I want to share with you three arts of living

that have persistently emerged.

Callings.

Each of them carries practices towards what it might mean

for each of us to participate

The first is to see the generative story,

We are fluent in and very familiar with

And that is real.

But it's not the whole story of us.

There is also an abundant reality

of things going right at any given time.

Of learning and growth that are happening,

One of the things that happens when I use this phrase,

the generative narrative, and people hear it for the first time

is sometimes they'll say, "Well, give me an example."

And I say, "Just look around you."

Even when we leave this special place

and go back to all the places we came from,

it is ordinary

that all kinds of people with all kinds of lives

are finding ways to be of service.

They are standing before a world in pain.

They are working with forms that are broken.

They're probably working in institutions that don't quite make sense anymore,

and they're having an edifying effect on the people around them,

becoming healers and social creatives

Now we are strange creatures,

and this is one of our strangest qualities.

We don't know how to tell this generative story of us as vividly.

We don't know how to take it as seriously as that story of rupture.

And this has started to make sense

It turns out that our brains are exquisitely designed to keep us safe

It turns out that we actually have to more actively,

if we want to attend to and get riveted by

what is good and redemptive.

The invitation here is to take in the good.

And just naming, calling it out,

Take in the good.

Let it start to actively shape the whole picture

My second offering is to live the questions.

And this one is a gift from the poet Rainer Maria Rilke,

ဒါကတော့ ပိုင်းခြားနေတဲ့ စစ်အေး ဘာလင်က အလွန်ငယ်ရွယ်တဲ့ သတင်းစာသမားတစ်ယောက်အနေနဲ့

who became a friend across time and space to me

ကျွန်မ ကုန်ဆုံးခဲ့တဲ့ နှစ်တွေမှာ ကျွန်မအတွက် အချိန်နဲ့ နေရာကိုဖြတ်ပြီး

in years I spent as a very young journalist

in divided Cold War Berlin.

In the early 20th century, Rilke wrote a wonderful series of letters

The point is to live everything.

Live the questions now, then, perhaps someday far in the future,

you will gradually, without even noticing it,

live your way into the answers.

Like us, Rilke was a citizen of a young century

with spectacular potentials for creating and destroying.

And it's come to seem to me

that the great challenges,

all of the great challenges before our young century

on some level are vast, aching open questions.

So I find myself returned anew to this wisdom

that when we find ourselves in this situation,

Now we live in a culture that is in love with the form of words

that is an answer, an opinion.

And we are in love with the way with words

that is an argument.

But a question is a mighty form of words.

As an interviewer, I know that questions elicit answers in their likeness.

Answers rise or fall to the questions they meet.

And it is a deep, deep truth in science as in life

Those moments when a new question rises up in us,

stops us in our tracks,

Those are moments when the possibility of discovery breaks in.

So the invitation here is to engage the adventure

of a new reverence for the questions that are alive in you,

That question, which I believe almost every one of us

standing before our world and its pain and its problems,

Spend some time formulating your variation on that question.

Write it down.

I have found that if you are faithful to living a question,

that question will be faithful back to you.

And my third offering is about calling and wholeness.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ တတိယ လက်ဆောင်က ဘဝပေးတာဝန်နဲ့ ပေါင်းစည်းမှုပါ။

The Latin word for “calling,” “vocare,”

“calling” အတွက် လက်တင်စကားလုံး “vocare” က

is the root of our word in English, "vocation."

အင်္ဂလိပ်လို ကျွန်မတို့ စကားလုံးရဲ့ ရင်းမြစ် “vocation” ပါ။

And in the world in which I was born,

ကျွန်မ မွေးဖွားခဲ့တဲ့ ကမ္ဘာမှာ

vocation was very narrowly equated with work and job title.

vocation ကို အလုပ်၊ အလုပ် ရာထူးနဲ့ ကျဉ်းမြောင်းစွာ တန်းတူပြုထားတယ်။

But we are not called merely to be professional people.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကျွန်မတို့ကို ကျွမ်းကျင် ပညာရှင်တွေလို့ပဲ ခေါ်တာမဟုတ်ဘူး။

We are called to be friends, neighbors,

ကျွန်မတို့ကို မိတ်ဆွေတွေ၊ အိမ်နီးချင်းတွေ၊ မိသားစု၊

family, citizens.

နိုင်ငံသားတွေလို့ ခေါ်ပါတယ်။

Lovers of the world.

ကမ္ဘာကြီးကို ချစ်တဲ့သူတွေပေါ့။

And just as there are callings for a life,

ဘဝတစ်ခုအတွက် ဘဝပေးတာဝန်တွေ ရှိသလို၊

there are callings for our time.

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ ခေတ်အတွက် ဘဝပေးတာဝန်တွေလည်း ရှိပါတယ်။

It has come to seem to me that our generation in time,

ဒီကာလထဲက ကျွန်မတို့ မျိုးဆက်၊ ကျွန်မတို့ မျိုးစိတ်ကို ပေါင်းစည်းမှုထက်

our generation of our species,

ဘာမှမလျော့တာလို့ ခေါ်တယ်၊

is called to nothing less than wholeness,

လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းတွေအားလုံးမှာ နေထိုင်နေတဲ့၊

that we have it in us to figure out

အဖွဲ့အစည်းတွေအားလုံးပါတဲ့ လူသားအားလုံးကို

what it would mean to cultivate whole human beings

ပြုစုပျိုးထောင်တာက ဘာကိုဆိုလိုတယ်ဆိုတာကို

with whole institutions,

အဖြေထုတ်ဖို့က

living in whole societies.

ကျွန်မဆီမှာ ရှိနေတာလို့ ကျွန်မ ထင်မိတယ်။

The invitation here

ဒီမှာ ဖိတ်ခေါ်မှုက

is to turn your powerful reality-shifting imagination,

သင်တို့ရဲ့ အစွမ်းထက်တဲ့ အရှိတရား ပြောင်းလဲမှု စိတ်ကူး၊ ဉာဏ်ရည်၊

your intelligence, your energy, your will

စွမ်းအင်၊ စိတ်ဆန္ဒကို

towards the possibility of wholeness.

ပေါင်းစည်းမှုရဲ့ ဖြစ်နိုင်ခြေဆီ ပြောင်းလဲဖို့ပါ။

How to live into that.

ဒီထဲမှာ ဘယ်လို ရှင်သန်ရမလဲ။

And I want to be very clear

တစ်ပေါင်းတည်းဖြစ်လာတာက

that becoming whole has nothing to do with aspiring to perfection.

ပြီးပြည့်စုံဖို့ ဆန္ဒပြင်းပြတာနဲ့ ဘာမှ မပတ်သက်ဘူးဆိုတာကို ရှင်းလင်း စေချင်ပါတယ်။

It is not about achieving perfection,

ဒါက ပြီးပြည့်စုံမှု ရရှိဖို့မဟုတ်ဘဲ၊

and becoming whole also does not mean

ပေါင်းစည်းလာတာက ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ထူးဆန်း၊ အားကြီး

that we become less strange or wild or complicated.

ဒါမှမဟုတ် ရှုပ်ထွေးတာ ပိုနည်းလာတာလို့လည်း မဆိုလိုဘူး။

Becoming whole would mean that we orient together

ပေါင်းစည်းလာတာက သေစေနိုင်တာနဲ့

away from what is death-dealing

အသက်ဆက်ပေးတာဆီ

and towards what is life-giving.

အတူတကွ ဦးတည်တာကို ဆိုလိုမှာပါ။

Every fracture of our world notwithstanding,

ကျွန်မတို့ ကမ္ဘာရဲ့ ကျိုးပဲ့မှုတိုင်းဆိုပေမဲ့၊

the science of our age is revealing all of life

ကျွန်မတို့ ခေတ်ရဲ့ သိပ္ပံပညာက ပေါင်းစည်းမှုအပေါ်

in its insistence on wholeness,

၎င်းရဲ့ တောင်းဆိုမှုအတွင်းမှာ ဘဝအားလုံးကို ဖော်ပြနေတာက

the interplay between our bodies, the natural world,

ကျွန်မတို့ ကိုယ်ခန္ဓာတွေ၊ သဘာဝ လောက၊ ကျွန်မတို့ ဖန်တီးတဲ့ ဘဝတွေ၊

the lives we make, the worlds we create.

ကျွန်မတို့ ဖန်တီးတဲ့ ကမ္ဘာတွေကြားက အပြန်အလှန် သက်ရောက်မှုပါ။

And every dilemma around our technologies notwithstanding,

နည်းပညာတွေပတ်လည်မှာ အကျပ်ရိုက်မှုတိုင်းဆိုပေမဲ့၊

our technologies have given us,

ကျွန်မတို့မျိုးစိတ်ရဲ့ သမိုင်းမှာ

for the first time in the history of our species,

ပထမဆုံး အကြိမ်အနေနဲ့ နည်းပညာတွေက ကျွန်မတို့ကို ပေးထားတာက

the tools to think and act as a species.

မျိုးစိတ်တစ်ခုအနေနဲ့ စဉ်းစား၊ လုပ်ဆောင်ဖို့ ကိရိယာတွေပါ။

Take that in.

ဒါကို ယူလိုက်ပါ။

It is the calling of callings

ဒါက ပိုမြင်သာ၊ အထည်ဒြပ်ရှိပြီး

to make that more vivid and tangible and real,

အစစ်အမှန်ကို ဖန်တီးဖို့ ဘဝပေးတာဝန်တွေရဲ့ ခေါ်ဆိုမှုပါ၊

each of us starting inside ourselves and with the lives we've been given.

ကျွန်မတို့ တစ်ယောက်စီဟာ ကိုယ့်တိုင်နဲ့ ကိုယ့်ကိုပေးထားတဲ့ ဘဝတွေနဲ့အတူ စတင်နေတာပါ။

And across my life of conversation,

ကျွန်မရဲ့ စကားဝိုင်း ဘဝတစ်လျှောက်လုံးမှာ

I have learned that wisdom and wholeness

ဉာဏ်ပညာနဲ့ ပေါင်းစည်းမှုဟာ ကျွန်မတို့အတိုင်း အတိအကျ

emerge in moments precisely like ours,

အခိုက်အတန့်တွေမှာ ပေါ်လာတာကို သိလာရပါတယ်၊

though ours is writ large,

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ ပုံကြီးချဲ့မှုတွေရှိပေမဲ့၊

where human beings have to hold seemingly opposing realities

လူသားတွေဟာ ဖန်တီးတတ်တဲ့ အားပြိုင်မှုနဲ့ အပြန်အလှန်ဆက်နွှယ်မှုတစ်ခုအတွင်းမှာ

in a creative tension and interplay,

ဆန့်ကျင်ဘက် အရှိတရားတွေကို ဆုပ်ကိုင်ထားဖို့ လိုတယ်ထင်ရတဲ့နေရာပါ၊

power and frailty,

စွမ်းအားနဲ့ ချည့်နဲ့မှု၊

birth and death,

မွေးဖွားခြင်းနဲ့ သေဆုံးခြင်း၊

pain and hope,

နာကျင်မှု၊ မျှော်လင့်ချက်၊

mystery and conviction,

လျှို့ဝှက်နက်နဲမှုနဲ့ ခံယူချက်၊

brokenness and beauty,

ကျိုးပဲ့မှုနဲ့ အလှတရား၊

calm and fierceness,

တည်ငြိမ်မှုနဲ့ ခက်ထန်မှု၊

mine and yours.

ကိုယ်ပိုင်နဲ့ သူများပိုင်စတာတွေပေါ့။
