OK, Nina, I have a few questions for you.

I know that you don't always want to speak,

that your work speaks for itself.

So you are a visual artist, a choreographer and an animator,

and somehow you're bringing everything together.

You're blending technology and dance?

Nina McNeely: Yes.

Nina McNeely: ဟုတ်ကဲ့။

I've always been intrigued by the human experience,

ကျွန်မ အမြဲ စိတ်ဝင်စားတာက လူသားတွေရဲ့ အတွေ့အကြုံပါ။

the world of dreams

ဒါက အိပ်မက်ကမ္ဘာနဲ့

and whatever may be lurking in the shadows of the subconscious mind.

မသိစိတ်ရဲ့အရိပ်တွေမှာ ပုန်းခိုနေနိုင်လောက်တဲ့ အရာမှန်သမျှပါ။

So I use dance to tell stories about sisterhood

ညီအစ်မရင်းစိတ်ဓာတ်အကြောင်း ရုန်းကန်မှုနဲ့ ရုပ်လွန်ဖြစ်တည်မှုအကြောင်း

and struggle and transcendence.

ဇာတ်လမ်းတွေကို ပြောပြဖို့ အကကို သုံးတာပါ။

And I combine that with live projection mapping

ပြီးတော့ အမြန် ပြောင်းလဲ၊ပျောက်သွား နိုင်တဲ့ သဘာဝလွန် ပတ်ဝန်းကျင်တွေကို

to create surrealist environments that I can shift in and out of quickly.

So it feels just like a dream.

And it also allows me to create illusions

that the dancers are controlling the animations with their bodies.

What's actually going on?

NM: Well, this piece was actually commissioned

NM: ဒီတင်ဆက်မှုက တကယ်တော့ လော့စ်အိန်ဂျလိစ်မှာရှိတဲ့

by Entity Contemporary Dance in Los Angeles, as a film.

Entity Contemporary Dance က ရုပ်ရှင်အဖြစ် အလုပ်အပ်ခဲ့တာပါ။

And this is the first time it's ever been performed live.

HW: First time.

Oh, my God, that's so awesome.

NM: So my process always starts with music.

NM: ဒီတော့ လုပ်ငန်းစဉ်က အမြဲ ဂီတနဲ့ စတယ်။

Music is like a psychedelic to me,

ဂီတဟာ ကျွန်မအတွက် စိတ်လှည့်စားမှုဆန်တဲ့ အရာတစ်ခုလိုပဲ။

so I'm always searching for music that's going to take me

ကျွန်မဟာ ဖြစ်နိုင်သမျှ စိတ်ကူးဉာဏ်အရှိဆုံး ခရီးကို

on the most imaginative journey possible.

ပို့ဆောင်ပေးမယ့်ဂီ တကို အမြဲ ရှာဖွေနေတယ်။

And then I envision the piece, I set the choreography on the dancers,

ပြီးတော့ ဇာတ်ကွက်ကို စိတ်ကူးကြည့်တယ်၊ ကချေသည်တွေပေါ်မှာ ကကွက်တွေ ဆင်တယ်။

I shoot that choreography, usually with my phone,

ဒီကကွက်ကို အများအားဖြင့် ဖုန်းနဲ့ရိုက်တယ်၊

and then I bring that into my animation software.

ပြီးတော့ ဒါကို အန်နီမေးရှင်း ဆော့ဖ်ဝဲလ်ထဲကို ယူလာတယ်။

I create the animations,

then we get back in the studio and combine the two together,

which actually takes hours and hours of trial and error.

And I heavily rely on the impeccable music timing of my dancers

and their talent and precision.

ကျွန်မ အကြီးအကျယ် အားကိုးတယ်။

HW: They're amazing.

So I love that you brought up music.

ဂီတ တင်ပြတာကို ကျွန်မ သဘောကျတယ်။

Tell us about the music that we just heard.

ခုနက ကြားခဲ့ရတဲ့ ဂီအကြောင်း ပြောပြပါဦး။

NM: So this music was composed by an artist named umru

NM: ဒီဂီတကို warpstr လို့ အမည်ရတဲ့ အခြားအနုပညာရှင်နဲ့အတူ

with a feature by another artist named warpstr.

ထူးခြားမှုတစ်ခုနဲ့ umru ဆိုတဲ့ အနုပညာရှင်က သီဖွဲ့ခဲ့တာပါ။

And I found umru’s music on SoundCloud around five years ago

လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ငါးနှစ်လောက်က SoundCloud မှာ umru ရဲ့ ဂီကို တွေ့ခဲ့ပြီး

and was just blown away by his use of these visceral, crunchy sounds

ဒီအူထဲအသည်းထဲ ကြွပ်ဆတ်တဲ့အသံတွေကို ဒီချစ်စရာ အသံနမူနာတွေနဲ့ ပေါင်းစပ်ထားတဲ့

combined with these angelic vocal samples.

အသံတွေကို သုံးထားတာကို ကြိုက်သွားတယ်။

And I really loved that his music sounded both ancient and futuristic

သူ့သီချင်းက တစ်ချိန်တည်း ရှေးခေတ်နဲ့ အနာဂတ်နှစ်ခုစလုံး

at the same time.

အသံထွက်နေတာကို သဘောကျတယ်။

So I started choreographing to his music in my dance class,

ဒါကြောင့် ကျွန်မရဲ့အကသင်တန်းမှာ သူ့ဂီတကို ကကွက်စထွင်ကာ

and we started talking on Instagram,

Instagram မှာ စကားစပြောဆိုပြီး

and the collaboration was born.

HW: So this session is all about imagination.

HW: ဒီအပိုင်းက စိတ်ကူးစိတ်သန်းနဲ့ဆိုင်တယ်။

Tell us a little bit about your creative process

ဖန်တီးမှုလုပ်ငန်းစဉ်နဲ့ စိတ်ကူးစိတ်သန်းတွေက ဒီထဲမှာ

and how imagination clearly plays into that.

ရှင်းရှင်းလင်းလင်း ပါဝင်ပုံအကြောင်း နည်းနည်းပြောပြပါ။

NM: So at this point in my career as an artist,

NM: အနုပညာရှင်အနေနဲ့ အလုပ်လုပ်နေချိန်မှာ

I've decided to just let my influences flow into me without question,

ခေတ်မစား ဒါမှမဟုတ် လူကြိုက်မများဘူး ဆိုရင်တောင် ကျွန်မရဲ့လွှမ်းမိုးမှုတွေကို

even if they're not on trend or unpopular.

မေးခွန်းမထုတ်ဘဲ ကျွန်မဆီ စီးဆင်းခွင့်ပြုဖို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်ခဲ့တယ်။

And this music really struck me with these visions

ကက်သလစ်ဘုရားကျောင်းမှာ ကြီးပြင်းလာရင်း ထိတွေ့ခဲ့ရတဲ့

of the religious iconography I was exposed to

ဘာသာရေးဆိုင်ရာ ပုံရိပ်တွေရဲ့ အမြင်တွေနဲ့

growing up in the Catholic Church.

ဒီဂီတကို ကျွန်မ စွဲငြိသွားတယ်။

And because of my Mexican and Filipino heritage,

ကျွန်မရဲ့ မက္ကဆီကန်နဲ့ ဖိလစ်ပိုင် အမွေအနှစ်ကြောင့်

that imagery was intense,

ဒီပုံရိပ်က ပြင်းထန်တယ်၊

a little bloody and dramatic.

အသေမိုက်တယ်ပေါ့။

(Laughs)

And I just remember being surrounded by these paintings and figurines

ဒီလို ဝမ်းနည်းမှု၊ သနားစိတ်နဲ့ ပီတိကို ဖော်ပြတဲ့

whose faces expressed such sorrow and piety and ecstasy.

ဒီပန်းချီကားတွေနဲ့ ရုပ်တုတွေ ဝန်းရံနေတာကို သတိရမိတယ်။

And I just remember being completely awestruck

လုံးဝ မှင်တက်မိပြီး သူတို့ရဲ့ အလှတရားနဲ့

and put in the state of pure, childlike wonderment

အမှောင်ထုကြောင့် ဖြူစင်ပြီး ကလေးလို အံ့ဩကျေနပ်မှု

by their beauty and darkness.

အခြေအနေမှာ ထားရတာကို သတိရမိတယ်။

And it's my greatest desire to recreate that experience

ဒီအတွေ့အကြုံကို ပြန်လည်ဖန်တီးပြီး ကမ္ဘာနဲ့ မျှဝေလိုတာက

and share it with the world.
