So you are a visual artist, a choreographer and an animator,

and somehow you're bringing everything together.

You're blending technology and dance?

니나 맥닐리: 맞아요.

Nina McNeely: Yes.

저는 언제나 인간 경험과

I've always been intrigued by the human experience,

the world of dreams

꿈의 세계, 그리고

and whatever may be lurking in the shadows of the subconscious mind.

잠재의식의 그림자 속에 숨어있을 무언가에 끌렸어요.

So I use dance to tell stories about sisterhood

그래서 춤으로 이야기하기 시작했습니다. 자매애와

and struggle and transcendence.

투쟁, 그리고 초월성에 대해서요.

And I combine that with live projection mapping

라이브 프로젝션 맵핑 기법을 이용해 하나로 합쳐서

to create surrealist environments that I can shift in and out of quickly.

So it feels just like a dream.

And it also allows me to create illusions

that the dancers are controlling the animations with their bodies.

HW: Tell us a little bit -- There's a lot of precision here.

What's actually going on?

어떤 이야기인지 말씀해주시겠어요?

NM: Well, this piece was actually commissioned

NM: 음, 사실 “III이 있었다“는

by Entity Contemporary Dance in Los Angeles, as a film.

L.A 엔티티 컨템포러리 댄스의 의뢰를 받고 영화로 제작된 작품이에요.

And this is the first time it's ever been performed live.

라이브 공연은 이번이 처음입니다.

HW: First time.

HW: 처음이었군요.

Oh, my God, that's so awesome.

세상에, 정말 대단했어요.

NM: So my process always starts with music.

NM: 저는 언제나 음악부터 시작해요.

Music is like a psychedelic to me,

음악은 저에게 일종의 환각제 같아서,

so I'm always searching for music that's going to take me

가장 창의적인 경험을 하게 해줄

on the most imaginative journey possible.

음악을 늘 찾고 있습니다.

And then I envision the piece, I set the choreography on the dancers,

그 다음에 작품을 구상하죠, 댄서들이 안무를 시연하게 하고

I shoot that choreography, usually with my phone,

주로 제 핸드폰으로 안무를 촬영해요.

and then I bring that into my animation software.

영상을 제 애니메이션 소프트웨어로 불러와

I create the animations,

then we get back in the studio and combine the two together,

그러고는 스튜디오로 돌아와 둘을 합치는데,

which actually takes hours and hours of trial and error.

And I heavily rely on the impeccable music timing of my dancers

and their talent and precision.

HW: They're amazing.

So I love that you brought up music.

음악 이야기가 나와서 말인데

Tell us about the music that we just heard.

방금 들었던 음악 얘기 좀 해주세요.

NM: So this music was composed by an artist named umru

NM: 움루라는 아티스트의 작품인데요

with a feature by another artist named warpstr.

와프스터라는 다른 아티스트가 피처링했습니다.

And I found umru’s music on SoundCloud around five years ago

5년 전 사운드클라우드에서 움루의 음악을 알게 됐어요.

and was just blown away by his use of these visceral, crunchy sounds

정말 감탄했죠. 찌르는 듯한 강렬한 사운드를

combined with these angelic vocal samples.

천상의 목소리 같은 보컬 샘플과 결합하는 방식이 놀라웠어요.

And I really loved that his music sounded both ancient and futuristic

또 노래가 고전적이면서도 미래적으로 들려서 좋았어요.

at the same time.

So I started choreographing to his music in my dance class,

그래서 춤 수업에서 그의 음악에 맞춰 안무를 제작하기 시작했죠.

and we started talking on Instagram,

그러다 보니 인스타그램에서 대화하게 됐고,

and the collaboration was born.

공동 작업으로 이어졌습니다.

HW: So this session is all about imagination.

HW: 이 작품은 온전히 상상 속에서 나왔다고 들었는데요,

Tell us a little bit about your creative process

창조 과정에 대해 말씀해주세요.

and how imagination clearly plays into that.

상상력이 어떻게 개입되는 건가요?

NM: So at this point in my career as an artist,

NM: 현시점에서 저는 아티스트로서

I've decided to just let my influences flow into me without question,

의문 없이 흘러 들어오는 대로 영감을 받아 들이기로 했습니다.

even if they're not on trend or unpopular.

트렌드에 맞지 않거나 인기가 없다고 해도요.

And this music really struck me with these visions

이 음악을 들으면서

of the religious iconography I was exposed to

종교적인 이미지들이 강하게 떠올랐어요.

growing up in the Catholic Church.

카톨릭 집안에서 자라며 봐 온 게 있거든요.

And because of my Mexican and Filipino heritage,

멕시코와 필리핀 집안이라

that imagery was intense,

아주 강렬했죠.

a little bloody and dramatic.

피투성이에 극적인 이미지였어요.

(Laughs)

And I just remember being surrounded by these paintings and figurines

종교적인 그림과 조각상들이 가득했던 게 기억나요.

whose faces expressed such sorrow and piety and ecstasy.

그 얼굴들은 슬픔과 경건함, 황홀함으로 가득했습니다.

And I just remember being completely awestruck

저는 완전히 경이에 차서

and put in the state of pure, childlike wonderment

순수한, 아이다운 놀라움을 느끼곤 했어요.

by their beauty and darkness.

그 아름다움과 암울함에 매료되었죠.

And it's my greatest desire to recreate that experience

저의 가장 큰 목표는 그 경험을 구현해내서

and share it with the world.

세상과 나누는 것입니다.
