I study vulture scavenging behavior and how vultures affect crime scenes.

I'm here to talk to you about how we take vultures for granted

in forensic science.

Before we do that, I want to tell you a story.

So we're going to take a trip, all 1,000 of us.

It's May 2014 and we're standing in a park in Nashville, Tennessee,

because we've been at a horse race.

As we wait for the porta potty,

we see two ladies in their Sunday best:

At any moment, we expect them to start talking

But they don't.

Instead, we hear them say,

We look up and to the left and see vultures circling round and round.

It occurred to me at this very moment

then why aren't we talking more about these birds at crime scenes?

People know that vultures are connected to death.

사람들은 독수리가 죽음과 관련되어 있는 걸 알고 있습니다.

But they don't really understand how.

하지만 왜 그런지는 모르죠.

For example, here's an email I received from a detective in Louisiana:

예를 들어, 루이지애나의 어느 형사가 보낸 이메일을 하나 보여드리죠.

"Lauren, there's been a kidnapping.

"로렌, 납치사건이 있었습니다.

What buzzards or vultures do we have in Louisiana?"

루이지애나에는 어떤 종류의 대머리 수리나 독수리가 있죠?"

Before we address the kidnapping,

납치사건을 조사하기 전에

I'll first address this buzzard/vulture question I get all the time.

저는 늘 독수리에 대한 질문을 먼저 받고 살펴보게 됩니다.

Buzzards don't live in the United States.

대머리 수리는 미국에 살지 않습니다.

They are hawks that live in Europe.

그들은 유럽에 사는 매 입니다.

The big black birds you see circling in the sky within the US are vultures.

The two types of vultures that live in Louisiana

are the turkey vulture and black vulture.

To fully understand the role of vultures in forensic science,

I'll walk you through this forensic case.

From the email, certain things become apparent.

이 이메일에서 몇 가지 확실한 부분이 있습니다.

We can assume the detective thinks the individual is dead.

그 수사관은 피해자가 죽었다고 생각하는 것 같습니다.

And he wants to use the birds to try to find the body.

그리고 시체를 찾는 데에 독수리를 쓰고 싶어 하죠.

Like the ladies in Nashville,

the detective thinks that vultures circling in the sky

그 수사관은 하늘에서 독수리가 돌고 있는 곳에

will lead him to the body.

시체가 있을 거라고 생각합니다.

It's not that simple.

그런데 그리 간단하지 않아요.

I don't know if you've ever seen a vulture up close

여러분 중에 독수리를 가까이서 보거나 함께 지낸 적이 있는지 모르겠지만

or spent much time with them,

but they're huge, huge.

그들은 아주 큰 새입니다. 엄청나게 커요.

Six-foot wingspan.

날개 길이가 1.8m나 됩니다.

Vultures circle in the air

독수리가 원을 그리며 나는 이유는

because they are too big to flap their wings and fly,

너무 커서 날개를 퍼덕이며 날 수 없기 때문이에요.

so they soar.

그래서 그렇게 나는 거죠.

They soar in thermals, which are vortexes or little tornadoes

독수리는 온도를 이용해서 납니다.

대기 기압차로 생기는 소용돌이나 작은 토네이도를 이용해서 날죠.

caused by pressure differences in the air

that form throughout the day as the sun heats up the ground.

낮에 태양이 지표를 데울 때 생기는 기압차를 이용하죠.

Therefore, when you see a circling vulture,

그러므로, 독수리가 하늘을 돌고 있다면

the bird is usually traveling from point A to B,

보통은 A 지점에서 B지점으로 이동하고 있는 것입니다.

rather than circling above something dead.

사체의 위를 돌고 있는 게 아니고요.

Actually, if you want to use a vulture to try to find a body,

실제로 독수리를 이용해서 시체를 찾겠다면

look for a vulture in a tree or on a fence post.

나무나 울타리 기둥에 앉아 있는 독수리를 찾아봐야 합니다.

Vultures are too big and slow to hunt.

독수리는 사냥을 하기에는 너무 크고 느립니다.

So they have to scavenge.

그래서 죽은 것을 찾아야 하죠.

In fact, vultures are the only animals in the world

사실 독수리는 지구 상에서 시체를 먹이로 삼는

that depend upon death as a food source.

유일한 동물입니다.

The turkey vulture that you see here is super cool,

이 멋있어 보이는 터키 독수리는

because it's one of the few bird species that can actually smell.

냄새를 맡을 수 있는 몇 안 되는 조류 중 하나입니다.

It hones in on the deceased by sensing a chemical

독수리는 시체가 부패할 때 나는

that's coming off the body during decay.

화학 물질을 감지합니다.

The evolutionary role of the vulture

is to rid the earth of harmful toxins produced following death.

생물이 죽었을 때 발생하는 해로운 독소를 제거한다는 것입니다.

Once death has been detected,

죽은 것을 찾으면

the turkey vulture lands and quickly scavenges.

터키 독수리는 착륙하여 빠르게 사체 청소를 시작합니다.

Vultures usually remove the eyes first,

독수리는 주로 눈을 먼저 먹어치우고

then tear the skin,

다음으로 피부를 찢습니다.

start pulling the tissues, and leave you with a skeleton.

살을 잡아뜯어서 뼈만 남기죠.

Therefore, the importance of vultures is not in the air,

but on the ground.

땅에서 찾을 수 있죠.

Vulture scavenging is somewhat gruesome.

독수리의 사체 청소 행동은 다소 소름끼칠 수도 있습니다.

If you're ever on a bad first date,

just reference this talk,

and I don't think you'll have to worry

about your potential suitor giving you another call.

Although gruesome, vultures are key forensic players,

소름 끼치기는 해도, 독수리는 과학수사의 해답입니다.

and here's why.

그 이유가 있어요.

Vultures will consume a dead human

독수리는 죽은 사람을 먹을 것입니다.

just like they will consume roadkill.

마치 도로에서 죽은 동물을 먹듯이 말이죠.

But you don't ever hear about that,

하지만 여러분은 이 얘기를 들은 적도 없을 거예요.

and it's because vultures are so good at what they do.

왜냐하면 독수리들은 그 일을 너무나 잘하기 때문입니다.

If vultures depend on death for survival and if they scavenge humans,

만약 독수리가 죽은 걸 먹고 살고 사람의 사체를 청소한다면

then how can vultures be absent from forensic textbooks and training manuals?

독수리에 대한 내용이 법의학 교과서나 교육 자료에 없을 리가 없잖아요?

The answer:

왜 그런지 알려드리죠.

the tradition has been for researchers to exclude animal scavengers

지금까지 부패를 연구하는 연구자들은

사체를 먹는 동물들의 접근을 막기 위해

from decomposition studies

by placing a cage over the decaying subject matter.

부패하는 물체 위에 새장을 덮어 두었습니다.

Why?

왜냐고요?

Because researchers were afraid an animal would run away with their subject matter

왜냐하면 연구자들은

동물들이 조사 대상을 가지고 도망가면 보고할 것이 없어질까봐 두려웠던 거죠.

and they wouldn't have any data to report --

consequently excluding animals' results in a lengthy skeletonization process,

결과적으로 해골이 되는 긴 과정에서 동물의 영향을 없애버리는 것입니다,

and this information is currently what detectives use during investigations.

그렇게 해서 얻은 정보를 수사에 활용하고 있는 거죠.

A lot of times at a crime scene when people see a skeletonized body,

범죄 현장에 뼈만 남은 사체가 있으면 보통은 이렇게 생각합니다.

they think, "Wow, this has been here for a really long time undiscovered."

"와, 발견되지 않은 채로 여기 오래 남아있었나봐."

Oh, no, no, no, no.

오, 아니에요, 아니에요.

Vultures accelerate decay.

독수리가 부패를 가속시킨 겁니다.

And the skeletonized body could have been there

백골화된 사체는

for as little as five days if scavenged by vultures.

독수리가 먹기 시작했다면 최소 5일 안에 만들어집니다.

The failure to account for vulture scavenging

독수리가 먹었다는 사실을 알지 못하면

can result in forensic scientists inaccurately estimating

사망한 이후 경과 시간을

how long someone has been dead

and then searching through the wrong missing person's files.

Therefore, the goal is to get forensic scientists to focus on vulture evidence

and to get law enforcement to consider vulture scavenging

and a possible recent death when skeletal remains are found.

Let's get back to the importance of the kidnapping case.

이제 납치 사건에서 무엇이 중요한지 되돌아가 봅시다.

I responded to the detectives

저는 형사들에게 보낸 답장에

and told them that vultures like areas with water.

독수리는 물이 있는 곳을 좋아한다고 알려줬습니다.

They like areas with white-tailed deer,

흰꼬리 사슴이 있는 지역을 좋아하고

they typically arrive within the first five days following death,

보통 죽은 지 5일 이내에 사체가 있는 지역에 와서

they're going to leave an intact spinal column and feathers.

온전한 척추와 털을 남긴다고 알려줬죠.

The detectives write back and say,

그 뒤, 수사관에게서 이런 답장이 왔습니다.

"We found the body buried in a shallow grave.

"저희는 얕은 무덤에 묻혀있는 신체를 하나 찾았습니다.

We also found the feathers you mentioned."

그리고 당신의 말대로 깃털도 있었습니다."

But there appeared to be a problem

그런데 문제가 있었어요.

because the feathers were located 40 yards from where the body was found.

깃털은 사체가 발견된 곳에서 약 35m 떨어진 곳에 있었습니다.

The feathers were next to a bloody pine cone.

깃털 옆에 피묻은 솔방울이 있었죠.

Vultures aren't attracted to blood, and they typically don't wander.

독수리는 피를 좋아하지 않고, 보통 주변을 돌아다니지도 않습니다.

They might wander 40 feet, but they're not going to wander 40 yards.

12m 정도면 몰라도 35m나 떨어져서 서성이진 않죠.

That would be a waste of energy

먹이를 또 언제 먹을 수 있을지도 모르는데

for a bird that doesn't know when it will get its next meal.

그런 짓은 체력 낭비일 뿐이니까요.

So my first job here was to determine if vultures were at the scene.

그래서 저는 가장 먼저 독수리가 현장에 있었는지 판단했습니다.

Indeed, the feather by the pine cone was consistent with the turkey vulture.

사실, 솔방울 옆의 깃털은 터키 독수리의 것과 일치했습니다.

So why in the world would a vulture wander 40 yards?

그렇다면 도대체 왜 독수리는 35m나 떨어져서 돌아다닌 걸까요?

One of the reasons I love vultures

제가 독수리를 좋아하는 이유 중 하나는

is because they tend to operate in a manner

독수리의 행동 방식을

that can be explained by biology and physics.

생물학과 물리학으로 설명할 수 있기 때문입니다.

I started mentally going through the numerous bating experiments

저는 텍사스의 시체 농장에서 수행했던 수많은 관찰 실험들을

I had conducted at a body farm in Texas.

머릿속으로 떠올리기 시작했습니다.

A body farm is a place where you can donate your body to science.

시체 농장은 법의학 연구를 위해 여러분의 시신을 기부하는 곳인데요.

I also went through my experiences with trapping

그곳에서 실험을 할 때 가둬둔 독수리와

and GPS tagging vultures.

GPS를 붙인 독수리를 이용했죠.

And then the year-long process of monitoring vultures

그때 GPS 기술을 사용해서 독수리를 1년 정도 관찰했습니다.

via remote GPS technology.

Next, I brought up my field notes and had an "Aha!" moment.

그래서 제 현장 노트를 찾아보다 "아하!"하고 깨달았습니다.

I knew of two things that would lure a vulture 40 yards from a body.

독수리를 35m 떨어진 곳으로 유인할 두 가지를 알고 있었죠.

Guts and brain matter.

장기와 뇌입니다.

I presented this information to the detectives

저는 이 정보를 수사관에게 알렸고

and learned that they suspected the victim had been incapacitated

그들은 피해자가 머리에 둔기로 의한 외상을 입고

by blunt force trauma to the head.

움직일 수 없었을 거라고 의심했습니다.

The blow to the head was thought to have occurred

in the area where the pine cone was found,

and then the victim was drug 40 yards and buried in a shallow grave.

This suggested that brain matter was the lure for the vulture

and illustrates how studying vulture behavior

독수리의 행동에 대해서 연구하는 것이

can help piece together some of the evidence.

The detectives also sent me this photo.

그 후, 수사관이 제게 이런 사진을 보냈습니다.

The victim's arm is sticking up out of the grave.

피해자의 팔이 무덤 밖으로 나와있죠.

As a forensic scientist, you have to think about the whole picture.

법 의학자라면 전체 그림에 대해 생각해야 합니다.

The feather by the pine cone indicated that vultures were at the scene.

This crime scene photo also depicts

Also note that the skin has a cut-like tear near the wrist.

The turkey vulture smells the decay, lands.

It can get through the pine needles,

pull out the hand,

it's going to tear the skin with its beak

and then start pulling the soft tissues away from the bone.

Just tear and pull, tear and pull, tear and pull.

This photo illustrates the scavenging efficiency of vultures.

This is important because it helps support the time line

the detectives are putting together for the murder.

There's not a whole lot of evidence.

You're not likely going to see the vultures at the crime scene.

Instead, vultures just leave these very subtle clues.

Rather than looking for the vulture,

look for the feathers and pristine bones.

Vultures are important

because they are so good and fast at what they do.

They're like tornadoes.

If you blink, you will miss them.

I provided my opinion about the vulture evidence to the detective.

저는 독수리가 남긴 증거에 대한 저의 의견을 수사관에게 제시했습니다.

And he presented the vulture evidence in court.

그리고 그 수사관은 법정에 그 증거를 제시했죠.

The kidnapping case was a death penalty case.

그 납치 사건은 사형 선고가 걸린 사건이었습니다.

And the defendant was found guilty.

피고는 유죄 판결을 받았죠.

This case illustrates how studying vulture behavior

이 사건은 독수리의 행동에 대해서 연구하는 것이

helps innovate forensic science.

법의학 혁신에 어떤 도움을 주는지를 보여줍니다.

Someone who has been murdered

누군가 살해당했다면

deserves the most thorough investigation possible.

가능한 가장 빈틈없는 조사를 받아야 합니다.

When we include vultures in forensic studies,

법의학 연구에 독수리를 포함시키면 사건을 더 정확히 파악할 수 있습니다.

we paint a more thorough picture of what happened, when it happened

무슨 일이 있었고

언제 일어났고

and who it happened to.

누구에게 일어났는지도 알 수 있죠.

So, the next time you're at a crime scene with a dead body --

그러니까, 다음에 시체가 있는 범죄 현장을 만나면..

look to the ground to find the clues vultures have left.

And if anyone ever brings up vultures on a date,
