As a natural product chemist, I have always been inspired

that are made by living organisms from cold environments.

hiding in plants and other organisms thriving in the cold.

Because I’m convinced that there’s some amazing chemicals

hiding in the north,

which perhaps means that the next wonder drug

to treat some of the nasty diseases that plague us humans

is just waiting to be discovered.

Good. But before we go on with the chemistry,

I want to give you a quick geography lesson.

When we talk about the Canadian north,

‘캐나다 북부’라고 하면 보통 북위 55도 위쪽을 의미하는데

we talk about the land which is north of the 55th parallel.

This includes most of the parts of Nunavik and Nunavut.

이 지역은 누나빅과 누나부트 지역 대부분을 포함합니다.

And this land is really famous for beautiful landscape.

이곳은 경치가 아름답기로 유명하죠.

It's famous for polar bears.

이곳엔 북극곰도 있고

It's famous for northern lights

and it’s famous for ...

Santa Claus.

But despite these famous icons,

하지만 이렇게 많은 상징들에도 불구하고

the great white snowy North is still largely unexplored.

And that's especially true at the molecular level.

And my team and I hypothesize

that the northern ecosystem must be producing

fantastic unknown chemicals

Why?

Because of the harsh conditions and the unique stresses

plants, fungi and other organism are experiencing in the north.

They must produce chemicals to protect themselves from these stresses.

For example, imagine the sunburn you would get

예를 들어, 여러분이 한 달 동안 매일같이 하루에 스무 시간 넘게

sunbathing for over 20 hours a day for a month.

일광욕을 해야만 한다면 어떨까요?

Well, to survive, you would need a tremendously good sunscreen.

거기서 살아남으려면 성능이 아주 좋은 자외선 차단제가 필요하겠죠.

That's exactly what lichens have in the northern ecosystem.

북쪽 생태계의 이끼들이 바로 이런 걸 갖고 있는 겁니다.

To protect themselves from UV radiation,

자외선으로부터 자신을 보호하기 위해

they fabricate a defense chemical that blocks UV rays

자외선을 효과적으로 막아줄 방어 물질을 만들어내야만 하는 거죠.

with an outstanding efficiency.

And that's only one of the defense chemicals we know about.

그리고 이것은 우리가 아는 수많은 방어 물질 중 하나일 뿐입니다.

And we believe

우리는

that there are many, many more hiding up there.

그곳에 훨씬 더 많은 것들이 숨겨져 있다고 믿습니다.

A couple of years ago, my group and I began our endeavors to prove this.

Now, let me bring you to Umiujaq, Nunavik,

a small Inuit village on the coast of the Hudson Bay.

And we were interested there,

we collected and we looked at the grayish lichens

that have been very scarcely investigated,

Stereocaulon paschale.

Now this lichen is found only in ecosystems

with very harsh climate conditions.

And almost nothing was known at that time

이 종의 화학 구성에 대해서는 알려진 것이 거의 없었기 때문에

on its chemical content.

So we thought it was a great species to investigate.

So even though Stereocaulon paschale is quite abundant in Nunavik,

we always try to minimize our footprint.

So we sampled only 100 gram of the lichens

and we brought it back to our lab at Université Laval in Quebec City.

There we cleaned it and then we crushed it

at -190 degree Celsius, using liquid nitrogen.

And this step is essential to release the natural substances

이 과정이 꼭 필요했던 이유는

within the lichen cell.

We then transformed the sample in the form of pulp

그리고 이 표본을 펄프 형태로 변형시켰습니다.

using different solvents in a process called maceration.

서로 다른 용매에 녹여서 변형하는데 이 과정을 온침이라고 합니다.

And after we filtered the sample and evaporated the solvents,

그리고 마지막에 표본을 여과하고 용매를 증발시켜서

we obtained what we call a crude lichen extract.

마침내 소위 ‘천연 이끼 추출물’이라고 하는 것을 얻었습니다.

And for a natural product chemist, that's when the fun starts.

Through careful chromatographic separation

and many other techniques, and years of work,

we've been able to separate, purify and identify for the first time ever

우리는 마침내 사상 최초로

구름나무지의에서 13가지의 천연 물질을

13 natural substances in Stereocaulon paschale.

성공적으로 분리, 정제하고 규명할 수 있었습니다.

Now, I know, your minds are exploding right now.

네, 알아요.

이제 머리가 터질 것 같죠?

(Laughter)

But wait, there's more.

그런데 기다리세요. 이거 말고 더 있어요. (웃음)

(Laughter)

From these 13 natural substances,

이 13가지 물질 중 11가지는

turned out that 11 had already been identified in other lichens,

다른 이끼에서 이미 발견되었던 물질인 걸로 밝혀졌습니다.

but two of the substances turned out to be unique in the world.

그런데 나머지 두 가지는

세계 어디에도 없었던 완전히 새로운 물질이었습니다.

Think about it for a moment.

From over 340,000

전 세계에 알려진 천연 화학 물질이

natural chemical substances known on the planet,

자그마치 34만 종류가 넘는데

Stereocaulon paschale from Nunavik

누나빅에서 채집한 구름나무지의라는 단 한 종의 이끼가

is producing two unique substances,

그중 두 가지 물질을 만들고 있는 거예요.

a clear demonstration that organisms experiencing stresses

명확하게 입증된 방법으로요.

북쪽 생태계의 척박한 환경에서 스트레스를 겪은 생명체가

in the northern ecosystem

produce unique chemicals.

독특한 화학물질을 만드는 겁니다.

Now what are the properties of these chemicals,

이 화학물질의 성질은 어떨까요?

of these natural substances?

우리가 몰랐던 이 새로운 천연 물질이요.

We don't know at this point.

This is still under investigation.

사실 아직도 알아가는 중입니다.

And to me, and I hope to you now, this is the exciting part.

저한테뿐 아니라 여러분한테도 그렇길 바라는데

정말로 흥미로운 부분이죠.

Who knows if the next generation of much needed anti-inflammatory agent

이것이 다음 세대에

소염제나 항암제, 혹은 알츠하이머 치료제로

or cancer fighting drug or even cure for Alzheimer

유용하게 쓰일지 누가 알겠어요?

will be inspired by a chemical substance from Nunavik lichens.

우리는 이 누나빅 이끼가 만든 화학 물질의 도움을 받을 겁니다.

Wow.

와우.

Let me bring you now further north.

이제 좀 더 북쪽으로 올라가 봅시다.

In Nunavut,

누나부트 지역에 있는 아름다운 배핀섬에서

on the beautiful Baffin Island.

And here the story began when a group of Canadian microbiologists

캐나다의 한 미생물 연구팀이

identified for the first time ever

전에 없던 새로운 발견을 합니다.

in the sediment of the beautiful, cold Frobisher Bay,

아름답고도 냉랭한 프로비셔 만에서 침전물을 채집해 관찰하다가

a microscopic fungus.

현미경으로 봐야만 보이는 작은 곰팡이를 찾아낸 거죠.

Well, the fungus was part of the genus of what we call Mortierella.

분류상 ‘모르티에렐라속’에 해당하는 균류라서

And so they called it, with not much originality,

팀원들은 그냥 다른 뜻 없이 단순하게

Mortierella species.

‘모르티에렐라종’이라고 불렀습니다

(웃음)

(Laughter)

But they also discovered that this weird-looking fungus

그런데 이 괴상해 보이는 곰팡이가

is synthesizing unique natural substances, mortiamides.

굉장히 독특한 물질을 합성한다는 것 또한 알게 됐어요.

‘모르티아미드’라는 물질이죠.

Now why a rather strange-looking fungus is producing these natural substances

이 이상하게 생긴 곰팡이가

왜 이런 천연 물질을 만들어내는지는 아직 밝혀지지 않았는데

is still a mystery.

However, this sparked our curiosity.

이게 우리 호기심을 자극했어요.

From past research investigation, we knew that natural substances

그래서 과거의 연구 자료를 조사해 본 결과 우리는

모르티아미드와 유사점이 많은 어떤 천연 물질들이

that share some of the similarities with the mortiamide,

compounds isolated from the jatropha plants from Africa

아프리카의 열대식물인 자트로파에서 분리된 적이 있는데

had antimalaria properties

이것이 말라리아 치료 효과가 있다는 사실을 알아냈습니다.

because they were able to neutralize

말라리아의 주 원인이 되는 기생충을

the parasite responsible for the majority of malaria cases.

무력화할 수 있기 때문이죠.

Could the mortiamides possess the same properties?

그렇다면 모르티아미드에도 이런 효능이 있는 걸까요?

Well, to find out, we went back into the lab

이걸 알아내려고 우리는 다시 실험실로 돌아가서

and we synthesized sufficient quantity of all the mortiamides.

모든 모르티아미드 물질들을 합성해서 충분한 양으로 늘리고

And we studied their antimalarial activity.

말라리아에 대한 저항성을 연구했죠.

And guess what?

결과가 어땠을까요?

One of the substances, the mortiamide D,

합성한 물질들 중 하나인 모르티아미드 D라는 물질이

efficiently neutralized the parasite of malaria.

말라리아 기생충을 효과적으로 무력화했습니다.

But that's not the end of the story.

그런데 여기서 끝이 아닙니다.

It's even better.

더 놀랍게도 이것이

It was able to neutralize a strain of the parasite

현재 쓰이는 수많은 말라리아 치료제로 퇴치할 수 없었던 기생충 균주까지도

that is resistant to many, many malaria drugs currently use in clinics.

효과적으로 무력화할 수 있었습니다.

Isn't that amazing?

정말 놀랍지 않나요?

You get the natural substances coming out from,

현미경으로만 볼 수 있는 작은 곰팡이가 만들어낸 이 천연 물질이,

produced by a microscopic fungus

isolated from the sediment of the icy cold Frobisher Bay

흰 눈으로 뒤덮인 북쪽 지방에 있는 찬바람 쌩쌩 부는 프로비셜 연안의

in the great white, snowy north

토양에서 온 이 작은 곰팡이가,

that could provide an answer to one of the most terrible tropical infections.

열대 지방의 가장 치명적인 감염병을 치료할

해답을 가져다 준 겁니다.

It's a small world after all.

세상이 정말 작아요.

Isn't it? (Audience) Yes!

Well, it's time to talk about the scary news.

이제 무시무시한 소식을 전할 차례입니다.

The north, unfortunately, is undergoing transformation at an alarming pace.

불행하게도 북쪽 지역은 지금 변화를 겪고 있습니다.

아주 심각한 변화를 겪고 있죠.

It is warming up faster than anywhere else on the planet.

지구상의 어떤 곳보다도 빠르게 뜨거워지고 있어요.

And this leads to a phenomenon called the greening of the northern ecosystem.

그리고 이로 인해 북쪽 생태계에 녹화 현상이 일어나고 있습니다.

And this is particularly true with Nunavik.

누나빅의 경우엔 정말 심각합니다.

There's a shrub called Betula glandulosa

‘수지 자작나무’라는 관목이 있는데

that is progressing north very rapidly.

이것이 북쪽 지방에 무서운 속도로 퍼지고 있습니다.

Now one of the immediate consequences of this rapid shrub growth

이 관목의 확산이 미치는 즉각적인 영향은

is that it decreases the daylight on the lower plants and lichen.

하등 식물과 이끼가 햇빛을 충분히 받지 못하게 한다는 것입니다.

This is altering the complete food chain,

이것은 먹이 사슬에도 영향을 미쳐서

and it’s altering also the traditional way of living of the Indigenous community.

원주민들의 전통 생활 방식을 망가뜨리고 있습니다.

And, unavoidably, this will lead to loss of biodiversity.

그리고 필연적으로

이로 인해 생물 다양성도 잃게 됩니다.

And one of the hidden consequences of losing biodiversity

그리고 생물 다양성이 줄어들면서

is the loss of chemodiversity.

화학적 다양성 역시 줄어들게 됩니다.

It is my great fear that with the loss of plants, lichen and fungi,

제가 정말 걱정되는 것은

식물, 이끼, 그리고 곰팡이가 사라지면

some unknown, fascinating natural substances

아직 알려지지 않은 경이로운 천연 물질들과

and potentially wonder drugs could be lost, too.

잠재적 치료제들도 다같이 사라진다는 사실이죠.

Now,

이제 우리가 나서서 중요한 역할을 해야 합니다.

this is why we think our work is important.

And timely.

지금이 적기입니다.

And this is why I hope by now you're convinced

that you have a good reason to help protect the great white, snowy north.
