We are at the beginning of a new era for the future exploration

When I was appointed artist in residence at the European Space Agency,

I thought it was a unique opportunity to make a bold statement, to rethink:

as human beings, what do we really need to take with us on this space journey?

And perhaps even more importantly,

As a privileged white male individual born and raised in Europe

I grew up in a world where Western arts, science and technology

are presumed superior over every other form of knowledge.

However, visiting many museums

and their vast collections, products of our colonial heritage,

I was introduced to a wide range of cultures

and unique ways to understand the world we live in.

Humanity's greatest achievement was not landing on the Moon,

but our cultural diversity,

the rituals, beliefs and knowledge woven within it.

This rich legacy does not belong in the past

but is very much alive,

sometimes even thriving.

We rarely talk about cultural,

ethical or even spiritual matters

when discussing space exploration,

but I believe it's precisely culture that will give us a purpose in the future.

Through my artistic practice,

저는 이번 작품 활동을 통해서

learning to appreciate multiple cultural dimensions

다양한 문화적 관점을 받아들일 수 있었습니다.

without the nostalgia or condescension

향수에 젖거나 우월감 없이 말이죠.

that historically has been projected upon these cultures,

그런 감정은 역사적으로 그들 문화와

their knowledge and their significance.

지식과 의미에 투영된 관점들입니다.

This is Kim Keum-Hwa,

이분은 김금화 씨입니다.

Korea's most iconic shaman who passed last year.

한국의 상징적인 무속인인데 작년에 돌아가셨죠.

I met Kim Keum-Hwa at her shrine in Ganghwa Island,

제가 이분을 만났던 강화도의 사당에서는

where I witnessed her last ritual,

이분의 마지막 의식이 있었습니다.

a celebration to bless her 70th anniversary as a shaman

무속인으로서의 70주년을 기념하고

and to prepare her departure to the spirit world.

내세로의 새 출발을 준비하는 의식이었죠.

Dating back to prehistoric times,

선사시대까지 거슬러 올라가는 한국의 무속신앙은

Korean shamanism has remained a resilient form of spiritual practice

영적 수행의 한 형태이자,

and a source of empowerment for many women.

많은 여성 권한의 근원으로 남아 있습니다.

This is Jeong Soon-deok, the shaman of the people,

이분은 무속인 정순덕 씨이고,

during a ceremony that lasted several days and nights.

며칠 밤낮 동안 계속된 의식 때의 모습입니다.

I remember bowing to her,

그분께 절을 하던 때가 기억납니다.

surrounded by blades and colorful costumes and offerings.

수많은 칼날과 화려한 의복들, 공물들이 주위에 있었죠.

Everyday objects were being elevated,

모든 것들이 날마다 더 좋은 것들로 바뀌었어요.

acquiring a new dimension right in front of my eyes.

제 두 눈 바로 앞에서 새로운 세계가 열렸습니다.

I saw her becoming a god,

저는 그분이 신이 되어가는 모습과

her body transformed through dance, prayer and ritual.

춤과 기도, 의식을 통해 변해 가는 모습을 보았습니다.

What's interesting is that despite their position of power,

흥미로웠던 점은 그러한 권력에 상관없이

Korean shamans remain graceful, humble human beings.

한국 무속인들은 언제나처럼 기품있고 겸손한 존재라는 것입니다.

Through these women,

이분들을 통해,

I could clearly see the power within ancient forms of knowledge.

저는 옛 지식에 숨어 있는 힘을 확실히 알 수 있었습니다.

The role our cultures play in maintaining a fragile cosmic balance.

우리 문화의 역할은 바로 연약한 거대 균형을 유지하는 것입니다.

This is Don Ramón,

이분은 돈 라몬 씨이고,

a local healer from the Center for Indigenous Arts in Veracruz, Mexico,

멕시코 베라크루스 주에 있는 원주민 예술 센터의 민속 치유자이시죠.

where Totonac culture is being taught to future generations.

그곳은 토토나카 족의 문화를 후대에 가르치는 곳이에요.

The center's director, Humberto García, was proud,

describing an educational model

where disciplines like art, communication or medicine

are not independent but entangled with each other.

interconnected dimension.

There is a natural rhythm that infuses every activity here,

자연의 리듬은 이곳의 모든 활동에 스며들죠.

be it cooking or weaving or healing.

요리, 옷감 짜기, 치유 같은 것에요.

Nothing is trivial or decorative.

그 어떤 사소함도 꾸밈도 없습니다.

Every gesture, every action has a meaning.

모든 손짓과 몸짓에는 각각의 의미가 있죠.

These traditions, beliefs and rituals, they're far from being immobile.

이러한 전통과 신념, 의식은 정적인 것과는 거리가 멉니다.

They're the result of thousands of years of practice

이는 수천 년 간의 수행과

in a painful regenerative process.

인고의 과정을 거친 결과입니다.

These are unique pieces of wisdom

이러한 한 줌의 지혜는

we must definitely bring with us into the future.

두말할 필요 없이 우리가 미래에 챙겨가야 할 것이죠.

And this is what I'm doing to make that happen.

I want to challenge our current model of space colonization,

현재의 우주 개발 계획에 맞서는 것 말입니다.

and I decided to start with a big gesture --

제가 내딛고자 하는 첫발은

to recognize the Moon

우리의 달을

as a universal symbol of rebirth and renewal.

새 출발과 혁신의 상징으로 받아들이는 것입니다.

As part of the European Space Agency's plans

유럽 우주국이 추진하는

to support a permanent human presence on the Moon,

인류 달 정착 프로젝트의 일원으로서

I'm proposing to build the Moon Temple,

저는 달 사원 건설을 제안합니다.

a future space for diverse cultural projections,

다양한 문화를 반영한 미래 공간으로서

traditions and scientific research.

전통과 과학 연구의 공간으로 이용하자는 거예요.

The Moon Temple will stand on the rim of the Shackleton crater,

달 사원은 섀클턴 분화구의 가장자리에 세워질 것입니다.

a gigantic impact crater featuring peaks of eternal light and perpetual darkness.

끝없는 빛과 칠흑 같은 어둠의 그 거대한 분화구에 말입니다.

Its design takes advantage of lunar microgravity,

건물의 설계상, 미소 중력을 관찰하기 용이하고

the use of local resources

지역 자원의 활용과 더불어,

and the complex celestial mechanics

복잡한 천체역학이 달 남극에서 작용하는 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

that operate on the south pole of the moon.

Sheltered in its interior,

we can find traces from an intriguing new material culture,

흥미롭고 새로운 물질문화의 발자취를 발견할 수 있고,

a series of objects made with moon dust and rare aerospace materials,

달의 먼지와 우주의 물질이 어우러진 다양한 것들을 볼 수도 있습니다.

symbolizing humanity's ancestral wisdom and all its complexity.

모두 우리 조상들의 지혜와 정교함을 상징하는 것들이죠.

These masks, vessels and other ritual artifacts,

여기 이 가면과 그릇, 그리고 여러 종교의식 유물은

they're powerful objects that imply deep personal transformations,

인간 내적인 변화를 나타내는 강력한 상징입니다.

sometimes even becoming a bridge to distant worlds.

때로는 현세와 내세를 잇는 다리가 되기도 합니다.

They represent the vast diversity embedded in the human experience.

말하자면 인류의 삶 깊숙이 자리한 끝없는 다양성을 나타내는 것이죠.

These objects carry within them thousands of stories yet to be written.

이러한 유물들은 아직 쓰이지 않은 수천 년의 이야기를 담고 있습니다.

Some provide protection,

보존되는 것이 있는가 하면,

while others relate to the harsh conditions

처참한 상태로 방치되기도 합니다.

that people will endure outside our planet.

지구 밖에서 우리가 견뎌야 할 그런 환경처럼 말이죠.

But even if these objects come from a place far away from here,

하지만 이것들이 머나먼 곳에서 왔다고 할지라도,

we can still recognise a familiar human quality within them.

우리는 그 안에서 인류의 모습을 단번에 알아챌 수 있을 것입니다.

The Moon Temple celebrates the Moon as the measure of all things.

달을 화수분처럼 기리는 달 사원은

It is a monument to humanity's reason and imagination.

인간 사유와 상상의 기념비이죠.

It represents our chance

이는 우리의 변화, 즉

to bring together once again science, art and ritual.

과학과 예술, 종교의식을 다시 하나로 뭉치게 하는 변화입니다.

This may be a personal,

개인적으로는,

even utopian vision for our interplanetary future,

행성 간 미래에 대한 다소 이상적인 관점일지도 모르지만,

but perhaps through these utopian exercises

이러한 유토피아적인 시행을 통해

we can break free from many of our prejudices here on Earth,

이곳 지구에서의 수많은 편견에서 벗어날 수 있을 것입니다.

because we need more diverse personal narratives for our future,

a future where we don't turn our backs to our cultures

and the role they play in shaping who we are today.

A future that does not perpetuate the survival of the most privileged

at the expense of the most vulnerable,

약자들이 희생당하는 미래가 아니라,

but instead acknowledges our fragile position in this universe

우리가 우주 앞에서 얼마나 연약한 존재이며,

and our responsibilities towards it.

이에 대해 어떠한 책임을 갖는지를 이해하는 것입니다.
