that swore that he could beat me one on one.

I despise fitting into the lane or the mold

전 너무 싫어요.

그런 질문들이 암시하는 틀 같은 데에 끼워 맞춰지는 게요.

that this question insinuates.

But I reluctantly say, “Yes.”

하지만 그냥 ‘네’라고 대답하죠.

I am a two-time NCAA champion.

전 전미대학체육협회에서 두 번 우승했고

A two-time gold medalist and a two-time --

But inside I scream, "I am so much more."

그래도 전 속으로 외쳐요.

“그건 단지 일부일 뿐이야.“

You see, barrier breaking is about not staying in your lane

편견의 장벽을 허물려면

정해진 길만 가서는 안 되고 세상이 기대하는 대로 살아서도 안 되죠.

and not being something that the world expects you to be.

It's about not accepting limitations.

한계를 수용해서도 안되고요.

It starts with inspiration,

영감을 받는 게 시작이죠.

and it's a foundation built upon picking apart

남들이 하는 방식이 맞는 방식인가를

what everybody thinks is the right way to do things.

꼬치꼬치 캐물으면서 기반을 쌓는 거예요.

There are so many barrier breakers in here

이곳에도 도전자들이 많네요.

that are fighting so hard to unlock doors that they may never walk through,

그토록 두들겨대는 문이 절대 열리지 않을 수도 있지만

but they do it anyway

그래도 하는 이유는

because we're standing on the shoulders of those that did it for us.

우릴 위해 문을 열어준 사람들을 디딤돌로 하고 서 있기 때문이에요.

It's an uphill battle,

힘든 싸움이고 큰 승리나 성공이 보장되지도 않아요.

and it doesn't guarantee big wins or lots of success.

And throughout that uphill battle, I think all of us look for hope, right?

이 힘든 싸움에서 우린 모두 희망을 찾고 있는 것 같아요.

We all look for optimism.

모두가 희망을 찾죠.

And mine is my daughter and this next generation.

제게는 그게 제 딸과 딸 세대 사람들입니다.

You see, I get to be the mom to an amazing 12-year-old daughter.

전 아주 멋진 12살 딸아이의 엄마가 되었거든요.

Yes, I know. I am partial.

네, 저도 알아요, 딸바보인 거.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But she's pretty dope.

그런데 진짜 멋져요.

I've been fortunate enough to travel the world with her

전 운 좋게도 딸아이와 함께 세계를 여행했어요.

while she allows her mom to fight for her dreams.

엄마의 꿈을 이룰 수 있게 딸이 허락해준 거죠.

We've played in Russia,

우리는 러시아에서도 경기를 했어요.

and I say we because she really does think she's part of the team.

딸아이는 자기도 진짜 팀원이라고 생각하니까 ‘우리’가 맞죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

We played in Russia, Turkey, China.

우린 러시아, 터키 중국에서도 출전했습니다.

And throughout that journey,

여행을 하면서 저는 제가 딸아이를 가르치고

I thought I would be the one teaching her,

challenging her, being the example for her.

아이에게 도전거리를 주고 모범이 될 거라고 생각했습니다.

But I’ve realized it’s a two-way street.

그런데 딸아이도 절 가르치더라고요.

You see, at three years old,

아이가 세 살일 때 러시아에 있는 학교에 보내기로 했어요.

I decided to enroll her in school in Russia.

I was like, I wanted her to have a normal life, right?

뭐, 보통 애들처럼 키우고 싶잖아요?

딸아이가 또래 아이들을 만나길 바랐죠.

I want her to be able to meet kids her age.

So at three, she befriended this little girl. Her name was Masha.

그래서 세 살에 마샤라는 친구가 생겼어요.

Masha didn't speak any English.

마샤는 영어를 전혀 몰랐죠.

Lailaa barely spoke Russian,

레일라는 러시아어를 거의 못했지만

but her parents invited us over to their house.

그 부모님들이 우릴 집으로 초대했어요.

And so we went. We went for this playdate.

그래서 둘이 소꿉놀이 시켜주려고 갔죠.

So we knock on the door,

문을 두드렸고 마샤 부모님들이 우아하게 문을 열고

and Masha's parents open the door so graciously

and welcome us into their home.

집안으로 들여보내 줬어요.

And we step forward, and I realize there’s no floor.

그래서 안에 들어갔는데 거실이 없더라고요.

It's a modest home.

작은 집이었어요.

It's one room with a couch on the side

한쪽에 소파가 있는 원룸이었는데

that pulls out into the bed that they sleep on.

소파는 펼치면 침대가 되어서 잠을 자는 용도였죠.

There's a wood fire oven in the middle

가운데는 장작 떼는 난로가 있어서

that heats the room and that they cook with.

방을 데우기도 하고 거기서 음식도 하고요.

And at three years old, I was concerned.

세 살 아기에겐 위험해 보였어요.

So I go to grab Lailaa, but I was too late.

그래서 레일라를 잡으려 했는데 너무 늦어버린 거죠.

She looked in the corner and she said, “A dollhouse!”

딸아이가 구석을 보더니 ‘인형집이다!’하고는

And Masha and Lailaa ran to the corner to play with the dollhouse.

마샤랑 구석으로 달려가 인형집을 가지고 놀더군요.

I'm so proud that that's my kid,

제 아이가 너무 자랑스러웠어요.

and I can't say that I had much to do with that.

제가 그렇게 키운 것도 아닌데 말이죠.

She has a way of like uniting people, finding commonality,

딸아이는 사람을 모으고 공통점을 찾는 재주가 있고

of rolling with the punches, of making the best of situations.

적응을 잘 하고 그 상황에서 최선을 다해요.

I’ve always wanted to uplift her,

전 언제나 딸을 응원하려 해요.

because the messaging that I received from home

왜냐하면 제가 집에서 받았던 응원도

was never shrink yourself to fit into this world,

세상에 널 맞추려고 움츠리지 말아라,

that you're enough, that everyone is enough,

넌 충분하고, 모두가 충분하다,

but you need to be individually you all the time.

다만 언제나 너의 개성을 잃지 말아야 한다였거든요.

I was fortunate to grow up in an environment with my parents

그런 부모님과 자랄 수 있었던 환경이 복 받았던 거고

and my two brothers

제 두 오빠들도 매일 같이 제게 힘을 줬어요.

who empowered me every single day.

They told me I can do anything I set my mind to,

제가 마음 먹은 일이라면 뭐든지 할 수 있다고 했고

so much so that my nickname was “Can Do.”

그래서 제 별명이 ‘할 수 있다’였어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And it was later extended by my brothers to “Can Do Anything And Get Away With It.”

오빠가 나중에 그 별명을 바꿨죠.

“뭐든 하고 혼 안 나기도 가능.“

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I was the baby of the family.

전 늘 막내둥이였어요.

Yes, I was the baby, and I didn't lack confidence.

막내둥이였고 자신감도 넘쳤어요.

If I wasn't kicking the ball out of the recess school parking lot

쉬는 시간에 학교 주차장에서 치마를 입고 공을 차지 않으면

in a dress, to my moms despise,

엄마는 싫어했지만

or high, high in the trees.

나무를 높이 높이 올랐어요.

I loved to compete.

전 경쟁하는 게 너무 좋았어요.

At everything, not just in sports, either.

단지 운동뿐만 아니라 뭐든지요.

This one time my teacher in elementary school, he said,

한번은, 초등학교 때 선생님이 말했죠.

“조동사 노래를 제일 빨리 부르는 사람이 누구지?“

"I want to know who can learn the helping verb song the fastest.

(Sings)

(노래)

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I love to compete.

저는 겨루기를 사랑해요.

I was that kid. I was that kid.

전 그런 애였어요, 그런 애.

(Applause)

(박수)

But what I loved so much was that I was allowed to be me.

정말 좋았던 점은 제가 저로 살아도 된다는 거였어요.

I was allowed to compete.

경쟁을 해도 됐고,

I was allowed to speak my mind.

제 생각을 말해도 됐어요.

My parents encouraged that.

부모님이 그러도록 응원했거든요.

Just because you're a girl, you don't have to stay in a certain lane.

여자라는 이유만으로 특정 길을 갈 필요는 없어요.

And then something happened in 1997.

그러다 1997년에 일이 터졌죠.

The women’s professional basketball league started.

여자프로농구 리그가 시작됐어요.

The WNBA had its inaugural season when I was 11 years old,

제가 11살 때 여자프로농구가 처음 개최된 거예요.

and I saw people that looked like me playing the game that I loved so much.

저같이 생긴 사람들이 제가 너무 좋아하는 경기를 하는 걸 본 거죠.

I no longer had to go out in the driveway

더이상 집앞에서 마이클 조던처럼 덩크하지 않아도 됐어요.

and try to dunk like Michael Jordan.

I could go out and get buckets like Cynthia Cooper.

나가서 신디아 쿠퍼처럼 슛을 할 수 있게 됐어요.

You see, my parents encouraged sports

저희 부모님들이 운동을 권했는데

because sports in their eyes was a microcosm of life.

그분들에게 운동은 삶의 축소판이었거든요.

이기는 법을 배우고,

You learn to win.

You learn to lose.

지는 법을 배우고,

You learn to work through obstacles.

장애물을 넘는 법을 배우고 싫어도 일어나는 법을 배우죠.

You learn to get up when you don't want to.

You learn to value differences, because those are important.

차이의 가치도 배우죠, 중요하니까요.

But as I ventured out into the world, I realized, like,

그런데 세계로 진출하면서 제가 깨달은 건,

the world wasn't so uplifting towards differences, right?

세상은 차이에 대해서 그다지 달가워하지 않는다였어요.

The world had a way of ...

세상은 뭐랄까,

putting differences in a box.

차이를 못 본 척 하죠.

For instance,

예를 들어서,

I received my girls basketball uniform in middle school.

중학교 때 여자농구 유니폼을 받았는데

It was old and smelly and tight.

낡고 냄새나고 작았어요.

The boys got brand new ones.

남자애들은 새 것을 받고요.

My brother worked his butt off

제 오빠는 밤낮으로 노력해서

to get into one of the most prestigious medical schools in the country.

미국에서 제일 권위있는 의대에 합격했어요.

My family was so proud.

가족들이 너무 자랑스러워했죠.

We heard the whispers: they said, “Quotas.”

‘할당량’이라고 부르는 뒷얘기를 들었어요.

The world had a way of just putting differences in a box

세상은 뭔가 다른 사람들을 한 곳에 몰아넣고는

and then getting mad when we had the audacity to not fit.

그 사람들이 배짱좋게 거부하면 화가 나나 봐요.

그냥 개개인으로서도

Just as an individual,

you get mad at me for not fitting in the box that you made.

제가 자신이 만든 편견에 일치하지 않으면 화를 내죠.

There was a time that went by where ...

한때는 저도

I didn't want to say yes to the basketball question.

농구하냐는 질문에 대답하기 싫은 순간이 있었어요.

Because if I checked that box,

왜냐면 그 추측이 맞다고 해주면

then I checked all of their other assumptions, right?

다른 추측들도 맞다고 생각할까 봐요.

So competitive juices kicked in.

제 안의 경쟁심이 고개를 든 거죠.

I'll show you, I'll show you. I'm going to be the best.

두고 보자, 두고 봐, 내가 다 이겨버릴 테니까.

여자애는 덩크를 못 한다고? 두 번 해 주마.

Girls can't dunk in a game? I'll dunk twice.

(Applause)

You can't hold up an MVP trophy pregnant?

임신하면 MVP를 못 따낸다고?

OK, I'll show you.

좋아, 보여 주지.

You can't have a family, a career and nurse your daughter.

가족, 직장, 육아를 동시에 할 순 없다고?

I came back nine weeks post-delivery and I played in a game,

전 출산 9주 만에 복귀해서 경기를 뛰었어요.

and I nursed my daughter for 13 months.

13달 동안 딸을 돌보면서요.

(Applause)

You can't be on the cover of a video game.

비디오 게임 모델은 못 할 거야.

You can’t do a TED Talk as an athlete.

운동 선수는 TED 강연을 못 해.

(Cheers)

But this entire time, my idea of breaking barriers

여태까지 제게 장벽을 부수는 행위는

was being something so that the world could see that it was possible.

뭔가가 되어서 세상에 그것이 가능함을 보여주는 거였어요.

But breaking down barriers isn't always records.

하지만 부숴야 할 장벽이 꼭 어떤 기록인 건 아니에요.

In [2021], like most of you,

2021년엔 여러분이 그랬을 것처럼

I sat around the television because I knew this was a moment.

저도 TV앞에 앉아있었는데 아주 중요한 순간이었거든요.

I sat my daughter front and center. I said, "Lailaa, watch this."

딸을 그 앞에 앉혀 놓고 말했죠. “레일라, 봐라.”

The first African-American Asian Vice President was being sworn in.

첫 아시아-아프리카계 부통령 취임식이었어요.

This is a moment that you might not appreciate now.

지금은 별 생각 없을지도 모르겠지만요.

(Applause)

(박수)

But in time you will.

언젠가 감사하게 될 거예요.

And as Kamala Harris was being sworn in, I said, “Lailaa, now look at her.

카멀라 해리스가 선서할 때 말했죠.

“레일라, 저 사람을 봐 이제 너도 할 수 있어.”

Now you can do that too.”

And Lailaa looked at me.

그러니까 레일라가 고개를 들더니 제 눈을 똑바로 보면서 말했죠.

She looked through my eyes, and she said, “Why couldn’t I before?”

“전에는 안 됐고?”

(Laughter)

Suddenly, I felt this big

갑자기 제가 요만하게 느껴졌어요.

because I had become what I despised the most in this world.

제가 세상에서 가장 싫어하는 부류의 사람이 되어있더라고요.

I had put her in a box

레일라를 편견에 집어넣었던 거예요.

because you see, the story that the world told me

그도 그럴 것이 세상이 제게 해왔던 얘기는

was women aren’t Vice Presidents.

여자는 부통령을 못 한다였으니까요.

And I had assumed that that's what they had told my daughter.

그래서 제 딸도 같은 얘기를 듣는다고 짐작했던 거예요.

I'm telling you, Generation Z, my daughter's generation,

Z세대, 제 딸 세대는요, 정말 세상을 바꾸고 있어요.

they're changing the world,

they're changing the world through conversation,

대화와 화합을 통해서 세계를 변화시키고 있고

through unity and through living as though boxes and barriers don't exist.

마치 편견이나 장벽이 없는 세상을 사는 것처럼 바꾸고 있어요.

It's no longer enough to just put your head down.

이젠 체념하고 받아들이는 걸론 충분치 않아요.

Get the job.

적당히 취직하고,

Accomplish the feat.

할 만큼 하는 걸로는요.

We have to unite, to come together,

모두 화합하고 함께 애초에 그 편견이 왜 있었는지에 머리를 맞대야 해요.

to figure out why barriers are there in the first place.

And Generation Z is doing that.

Z세대가 그걸 하고 있어요.

They're listening.

듣고,

They're seeing both sides.

양측을 보고,

And they're uniting for causes that don't directly impact them.

직접적으로 관계없는 일이라도 대의를 위해 뭉쳐요.

We have entire sports leagues

스포츠 팀과 리그조차도 그들의 신념을 위해 싸우고 있어요.

that are standing up for what they believe in.

It's no longer just one athlete.

더 이상 선수 한 명이 아니에요.

We have men that are fighting for women to receive equal pay.

여성에게 동등한 보수를 주라고 싸우는 남성도 있고

We have white allies that are protesting racial inequalities.

인종 차별에 항의하는 백인 동지들도 있어요.

We are talking about mental health.

정신 건강에도 관련있죠.

And you know what's so special?

또 다른 점이 뭔 줄 아세요?

My daughter the other week came up and handed me

몇 주 전에 제 딸이 저한테 뭘 주는데

a list of stores that we're not allowed to shop at anymore.

이제부터 불매해야 하는 가게들 목록이었어요.

(웃음)

(Laughter)

I’m like, “Lailaa, like, another lesson, like, already?”

저는 이랬죠. “레일라, 또 왜, 뭔데?”

She's like, "Mom, we're not allowed to shop at these stores

제 딸이 이러더군요.

“엄마, 이제부터 이 가게들은 불매야.

because they're not body positive and body conscious

이 가게들은 모든 체형과 크기를 만들지도 않고 좋게 보지도 않거든.”

towards all shapes and sizes.”

And you know what, I'm listening,

그리고, 전 다 들어줘요.

I'll be honest, and I'm learning, and you should, too,

솔직히 말씀드리면 저는 배우고 여러분들도 그래야 해요.

because my optimism lies in the next.

전 다음 세대를 믿거든요.

That they will take our obstacles, our struggles,

그들이 우리의 장애물과 어려움을,

our insecurities, our challenges

불신과 고난을 받아들이고

and not see them as obstacles, but as opportunities.

그것들을 장애가 아니라 기회로 삼을 거예요.

Or they may not even acknowledge them at all.

심지어 아예 눈치도 못 챌 수도 있죠.

I'm proud because Generation Z are proud, bold, and they're themselves.

Z세대가 당당해서,

용감하고 자아를 잃지 않아서 자랑스러워요.

Because those ...

왜냐하면 그...

that were told that they can't their entire life

못 한다는 말을 평생 들었던 그 사람들이 아이를 갖고

are having kids that are making us believe that we can.

그 아이들이 우리에게 할 수 있다고 말하고 있으니까요.

So go ahead, ask me if I play basketball,

그러니까 이제 물어보세요, 농구하냐고.

and I’ll proudly say, “Yes.”

당당하게 ‘네’라고 대답할게요.

Because I realize I was the one putting basketball in a box all along.

그동안 농구를 편견이란 상자에 넣은 게 바로 저였다는 걸 깨달았거든요.
