Hello, I am Makhtoum Abdalla from Sudan,

こんにちは　僕はスーダン出身の マクトゥーム･アブダラ

born in 2004, in Nyala, South Darfur.

2004年 南ダルフール州の 州都ニャラで生まれました

And on the map, the western part of Sudan is where you find Darfur.

地図上ではスーダンの西部に ダルフールがあります

For over a decade, the state was affected [by] conflict,

10年以上もの間 紛争の影響を受けていましたが

which we were still reeling from.

なおも 人々は立ち直れていませんでした

And as a result, since I was four years old,

そのため 僕が４歳の時から

my family have lived in a camp for internally displaced people:

僕ら家族は 国内避難民（IDP）向けの キャンプで暮らしています

an IDP camp for families that have been driven from their homes

国内避難民向けキャンプでは

for one reason or another,

何らかの理由で故郷を追われ

to another part of the country.

別の地域へ追われた家族が集まっています

My family was displaced because of conflict,

僕の家族も 紛争のために 家を追われました

and I was born in a world full of complexity,

僕が生まれたのは 複雑な社会事情と

loss and deprivation.

破壊と略奪が横行する世界でした

But despite that,

そんな世界ですが

my family and I are still here

僕らは いまだにIDPに住んでいます

full of hopes and dreams for a better tomorrow.

明るい明日のために たくさんの希望と夢を抱いています

キャンプで暮らす前は

Before the camp,

南ダルフール州の オタシュという村で暮らしていました

we used to live in a place called Otash village in South Darfur.

And as the word “otash” comes from the Arabic word “A’atshan”,

“Otash（オタシュ）”は アラビア語の“A’atashan”が由来で

which means thirsty.

“喉が渇く”という意味です

And it has been called so for the lack of water resources

この地域は水不足なので そう呼ばれています

in that area.

And so the name of our IDP camp is Otash camp.

だから ここは オタシュ避難民キャンプと呼ばれています

Same name, same issue.

同じ名前のもと 同じ問題を抱えている ―

It's home to almost 100,000 people from different villages.

いろんな村からやってきた 10万近い人々にとっての家なんです

I was very young when we left our home,

僕がとても幼いときに 家族は故郷を出ました

but I can remember the fear on my family's face

故郷を去る準備をして すべてを置いて出ていく時の

as they're getting ready, leaving everything behind.

家族の顔に出ていた恐怖の表情は 今でも思い出せます

I could see their pain, especially on my mother's face.

家族の痛みも感じました 特に母の顔からです

I still remember.

いまだに覚えています

My family were one of the thousands of families that fled.

僕ら家族は避難してきた 何千という家族のうちの一つでした

Not everyone was lucky,

皆が幸運だったわけではなく

some lost their lives while trying to escape.

逃げる途中で 命を落とした人たちもいました

Because the journey was so dangerous,

逃げている最中は とても危険で

we had to hide frequently along the road.

道中に身を隠す必要が 何度もありました

Where we used to live is only two hours away,

村からわずか２時間で 移動できる距離でしたが

but the journey took two days until we finally reached a safe place,

今では オタシュ避難民キャンプと 呼んでいるこの安全な場所に

the place that today we call Otash IDP camp.

到着するまでに２日を要しました

During the two days it took my family to the camp,

キャンプに着くまでの２日間

we had nothing to eat and only a little water.

食べる物はなく 水がわずかあるばかりでした

My baby brother died from malnutrition.

赤ん坊だった弟は栄養失調で死にました

And he was not even two years old.

２才の誕生日も迎えられなかったのです

My brother's passing affected me a lot.

弟の死は本当にショックだったので

That's why I decided to go to college to study nutrition and medicine.

大学に行って 栄養学と医学を学ぼうと決意しました

Just to help others and find ways to prevent what happened to him.

人命を守るため 弟に起きたようなことを 防ぐ方法を見つけるためにです

In a world with so much food and so much prosperity,

豊富な食料があり 繁栄した世界で

no one should ever die of hunger.

誰も飢餓で死ぬべきではないのです

I feel like I owe it to my baby brother to be better and do better,

いい人間になれて いい行いができるのは 弟のおかげだと感じています

so I can help people like us,

だから ダルフールであれ 世界のどんな所であれ

whether from Darfur or anywhere in the world.

僕らと同じような境遇にある人々を 助けられるんです

I have big dreams,

僕には大きな夢があります

and I know education is my path to reaching them.

教育は自分の夢を叶えるための道のりで

Education is a basic right for every child.

すべての子供にとっての基本的な権利です

And it is the way each of us can get skills,

教育を受けることで 誰もが人生 そして世界を変える ―

tools and power to make change in our lives

スキルや手段や力を

and in the world.

手に入れられるのです

Education is a basic right for all children,

教育は すべての子供たちの基本的な権利で

especially for those who have grown up

特に 暴力や紛争しか知らずに育った 子供たちには

only knowing violence and conflict.

必要な権利です

And education, also, is the way we make our future more secure

教育があれば より安全な未来が迎えられるし

and our present more peaceful.

今この時も平和に暮らせます

A generation needs power to make change.

子供たちの世代には 変化をもたらす力が必要です

And the greatest power that's ever known to all

知られている限り最大の力とは

is the power of knowledge.

“知識の力”です

When I read books,

読書をしていると

I feel like I'm no longer in my tiny room made of hay

そこがキャンプ内の 電気もなく 干し草で作られた ―

without electricity in the camp.

小さな部屋であることを忘れられるし

I feel like I'm confident enough to say that I'm the captain of my destiny.

運命を意のままにできる船長だと 自信をもって言える気がします

From my room in the camp,

キャンプにある僕の部屋から

I've been able to travel through books to Cairo,

本を通して旅ができるんです カイロや

London and France,

ロンドンにフランス

and all the way to Columbia University in New York.

ニューヨークのコロンビア大学にも 行けるんです

And I know what most people may think about me,

人々は僕のことを

that I'm an internally displaced person.

“国内避難民”だと 見ているかもしれません

That may be true, but I am more than that.

確かにそうなんですが それ以上でもあるんです

I am patience, I'm hope, dreams,

忍耐力があり 希望や夢をもった人間で

and with education, I can get where I want to be.

教育があれば なりたいものになれます

Education in an IDP camp is hard,

避難民キャンプで 教育を受けることは大変です

and Otash has certainly had its ups and downs.

オタシュでは いいことも悪いことも起きました

At the beginning, there were no schools nearby.

最初 近くに学校はありませんでした

Now there are schools, but they are not always free.

今では ありますが 全部が無料というわけではありません

And we don't always have access to electricity or access to internet

いつでも電気やインターネットが 使えるというわけでもないんです

like schools in many other countries.

他国の学校のようにはいきません

But education should be free for every child,

でも すべての子供が 教育を無料で受けられるべきです

and access to quality education should be a priority

質の高い教育が優先され

and available for all children.

しかも 全ての子供たちが 受けられるべきなんです

Meanwhile, as more people in Darfur have been displaced,

一方で ダルフールの人々が ますます避難民化しているから

the schools inside our camp have become overcrowded.

キャンプ内の学校は 過密状態になっています

But still, they have big dreams too.

だけど 彼らにも大きな夢があります

And in my state primary school exams,

僕は 州の初等学校（小中学校）での試験で

I came in third in the ranking out of thousands of students,

数千人の受験者のうち ３位になりました

which was a huge achievement for me.

僕にとっては ものすごいことでした

Soon I will take another test at the end of my secondary school,

近々 中等学校（高校）の終わりに 別の試験を受け

and then I hope to progress onward to University,

そして大学に進学できることを願っています

moving step by step closer to my ultimate goal.

最終目標へと一歩一歩近づいています

Along the way,

これまでに

I've learned to speak three languages.

３言語を学び 話せるようになりました

I speak fluently in Arabic,

アラビア語は流ちょうに

English and Turkish.

それに 英語 トルコ語が話せます

And recently, I started to learn French.

最近 フランス語の勉強も始めました

(French) J’ai de grands rêves.

（フランス語で）“僕には夢がある”

(English) Learning languages makes me feel powerful,

他言語を学ぶと 力強くなる感じがします

意欲をかき立てられますからね

as they challenge my mind.

And it also makes me feel I can communicate with other people,

それに他の言葉を話す人々と 会話ができるようになります

which is important to a connected and equitable world.

これは 互いにつながり 平等な世界には重要なことです

And also, it's one of the many ways that can bring us all together as humans.

なにより会話は 人を結びつける手段の一つです

Because of my academic achievement,

学業の成績が良かったおかげで

a few years ago, UNICEF Sudan wrote an article about me

数年前に ユニセフ・スーダンが 僕のことを記事にしてくれました

in which I shared my biggest dream

そこで一番大きな夢を語りました

to one day go to Columbia University

いつか コロンビア大学に入って

and study medicine.

医学を学びたいと

And now today I am one of UNICEF Sudan Youth Advocates,

今じゃ僕は ユニセフ・スーダンの Youth Advocates（若者のための代弁者）で

championing the rights of other children to access quality education.

良い教育を受ける子供の権利を 支持しています

I told you, I have big dreams.

そう 僕には大きな夢があるんです

Since becoming a Youth Advocate with UNICEF Sudan,

ユニセフ・スーダンで この代弁者になってから

I've been emphasizing the importance of peace and education.

平和と教育の大切さを ずっと訴えています

And I see how youth in the camp look up to me

キャンプでは若者が僕を どれほど尊敬してくれているか

and how my parents and siblings ooze with pride

また 僕に与えられたチャンスについて 両親や兄弟が誇らしく思っていることを

with the opportunities I have been given,

感じることができますし

which makes me feel proud.

僕自身も誇りに思います

And I love seeing everyone in the camp wants also to fight for education.

それに キャンプの皆が教育のために 人々が行動するのを見てうれしく思います

Recently, I had the opportunity to fly to the capital of Sudan, Khartoum.

この前 スーダンの首都ハルツームに 行くことができました

It was the first time for me to be on an airplane

飛行機に乗ったのも初めてだし

and first time also to leave Nyala.

ニャラから出たことも初めてでした

I even had the opportunity to meet the prime minister of Sudan,

スーダンの各州を代表する若者たちと一緒に

along with other youth representing every state in Sudan,

首相に会う機会さえ もらえました

which was truly overwhelming for me.

本当に圧倒されました

I, Makhtoum, from Otash IDP camp,

オタシュIDPキャンプから来た 僕マクトゥームが

with the Prime Minister of Sudan.

スーダン首相と一緒だったんですよ

But it was also an eye-opener.

でも それは僕に新たな世界を 開かせてもくれました

I connected with other youth who came to the capital

首都に来た他の若者たちと交流ができたし

with a heart full of hope and a mind filled with determination,

彼らは希望と信念に満ちあふれていて

wanting to share their stories from their parts in their country.

自分たちの国の現状を 話したがっていました

I realized that, despite our different cultural backgrounds, we were all one.

その時に気づきました 文化は違うけど僕らは一つなんだと

We have the same plight and needs.

同じ苦境で同じものを欲しているんです

But we all wanted one thing:

僕らが欲しいものは

peace and fair treatment

平和と平等な扱いや

and access to services and opportunities.

サービスと機会が得られることです

And this must be true with every child around the globe.

これは世界中の子供たちに 求められることです

The visit also reminded me

首都への訪問は

that there is so much unfairness in this world.

世界にはたくさんの不平等があることを 気づかせてくれました

As I was lying in my hotel room with A/C on and electricity,

空調と電気が使えるホテルで 横になっているとき

I thought of how I struggle in the camp to study and to sleep

電力不足のキャンプで 勉強したり寝たりすることが

because of lack of electricity.

どれほど大変なことかと思いました

When I study, I rely on flashlights.

勉強するときは 懐中電灯が頼りです

I can’t help but ask the question: Why?

疑問を抱かずにはいられません “どうしてなんだ？”と

I realized that I'm in so many ways so lucky

いろんな意味で 僕はとても幸運だとも思いました

because I have opportunities to succeed in life,

というのも 人生で成功する機会を与えられ

and I have the great privilege to continue to increase awareness

しかも 世界中の僕のような 全ての子供たちのための

about education for all children like me and across the world.

教育への意識を高め続ける特権が 与えられたからです

Imagine if they were given the skills, power and knowledge.

子供たちがスキル 力 知識を得られることを 想像してみてください

Imagine the difference they would make in their life and in our world.

彼らの人生や世界が変わることを 想像してみてください

They have big dreams, too.

彼らにも大きな夢があるんです

Education, just like electricity,

電気と同じように教育も

shouldn't just be for some,

一部の人たちのものではいけません

it's a necessity and a right.

教育は不可欠なもので権利なんです

Just like hopes, dreams and opportunity.

希望 夢 機会のようにね

Shining a way forward for each of us

僕ら一人一人のために 道を照らしてくれれば

and, in turn, allowing us to make the world better for others.

今度はぼくらが 他の人のために 世界を良くできるんです

I am Makhtoum Abdalla from Otash IDP camp,

僕はオタシュIDPキャンプの 避難民マクトゥーム･アブダラ

but I am so much more than that.

でも ただの避難民じゃないと

I say it proudly.

誇りを持って言います

With the power of education,

教育のパワーで

I can make the world a better place.

僕は世界をもっと素晴らしい 場所にできます

We all can.
