Hello, I am Makhtoum Abdalla from Sudan,

born in 2004, in Nyala, South Darfur.

And on the map, the western part of Sudan is where you find Darfur.

For over a decade, the state was affected [by] conflict,

which we were still reeling from.

And as a result, since I was four years old,

my family have lived in a camp for internally displaced people:

an IDP camp for families that have been driven from their homes

for one reason or another,

My family was displaced because of conflict,

and I was born in a world full of complexity,

loss and deprivation.

But despite that,

my family and I are still here

full of hopes and dreams for a better tomorrow.

Before the camp,

캠프에 오기 전에는 남다르푸르주의 오타쉬라는 마을에서 살았습니다.

we used to live in a place called Otash village in South Darfur.

And as the word “otash” comes from the Arabic word “A’atshan”,

‘오타쉬‘의 어원은 아라비아어 ‘아타시’인데

which means thirsty.

‘갈증’이라는 의미입니다.

And it has been called so for the lack of water resources

이 마을이 물이 부족한 것으로 이 지역에서 유명해 그렇게 불렸습니다.

in that area.

And so the name of our IDP camp is Otash camp.

그래서 저희 IDP 캠프 이름도 오타쉬 캠프입니다.

Same name, same issue.

같은 이름, 같은 문제입니다.

It's home to almost 100,000 people from different villages.

이곳에는 여러 마을에서 온 거의 10만 명이 모여 삽니다.

I was very young when we left our home,

집을 떠나올 때 저는 아주 어렸지만 기억이 납니다.

but I can remember the fear on my family's face

모든 걸 놔두고 도망갈 준비를 하는 가족들의 얼굴엔 공포가 있었습니다.

as they're getting ready, leaving everything behind.

I could see their pain, especially on my mother's face.

저는 가족들의 고통을, 특히 엄마의 얼굴에 서린 고통을 볼 수 있었습니다.

I still remember.

여전히 기억합니다.

My family were one of the thousands of families that fled.

저희 가족은 피난길에 오른 수많은 가족들 중 하나였습니다.

Not everyone was lucky,

some lost their lives while trying to escape.

Because the journey was so dangerous,

we had to hide frequently along the road.

Where we used to live is only two hours away,

but the journey took two days until we finally reached a safe place,

the place that today we call Otash IDP camp.

현재 오타쉬 IDP 캠프라 부르는 곳까지요.

During the two days it took my family to the camp,

캠프에 도착할 때까지 이틀 동안

we had nothing to eat and only a little water.

저희 가족은 아무것도 먹지 못하고 약간의 물만 먹었습니다.

My baby brother died from malnutrition.

어린 제 남동생은 영양실조로 죽었습니다.

And he was not even two years old.

두 살도 채 되지 않았죠.

My brother's passing affected me a lot.

동생의 죽음은 큰 충격이었습니다.

That's why I decided to go to college to study nutrition and medicine.

제가 영양학과 의학을 배우러 대학을 가야겠다고 결심한 이유죠.

Just to help others and find ways to prevent what happened to him.

그런 일이 일어나기 전에 막도록 다른 사람들을 돕고 싶어서요.

In a world with so much food and so much prosperity,

식량과 자산이 넘쳐나는 세상에서

no one should ever die of hunger.

굶어 죽는 사람이 있어서는 안 됩니다.

I feel like I owe it to my baby brother to be better and do better,

어린 제 동생을 생각하면서

사람들을 도울 수 있도록 더 훌륭한 사람이 되어야겠다는 생각이 들었습니다.

so I can help people like us,

whether from Darfur or anywhere in the world.

다르푸르 지역이든 세계 어느 지역이든지요.

I have big dreams,

제게는 큰 꿈이 있는데 교육이 제게 그 길을 안내해주리라 믿습니다.

and I know education is my path to reaching them.

Education is a basic right for every child.

교육은 모든 아이들의 기본적인 권리예요.

And it is the way each of us can get skills,

교육은 우리 모두에게 기술과

tools and power to make change in our lives

도구와 힘을 줘서 우리 삶을 바꿀 수 있게 해줍니다.

and in the world.

세상도 바꿀 수 있죠.

Education is a basic right for all children,

교육은 모든 아이들의 기본적인 권리이고

especially for those who have grown up

오로지 폭력과 분쟁 속에서 자란 아이들에게 특히 더 필요합니다.

only knowing violence and conflict.

And education, also, is the way we make our future more secure

또한 교육은 우리의 미래를 조금 더 안전하게 만들고

and our present more peaceful.

우리의 현재를 조금 더 평화롭게 해줍니다.

A generation needs power to make change.

변화를 만들 수 있는 힘이 필요합니다.

And the greatest power that's ever known to all

그리고 모두가 알다시피 가장 강력한 힘은 지식의 힘이죠.

is the power of knowledge.

When I read books,

책을 읽을 때면,

I feel like I'm no longer in my tiny room made of hay

저는 더 이상 제가

전기도 들어오지 않는 캠프의 작은 초가집에 있다고 느끼지 않습니다.

without electricity in the camp.

I feel like I'm confident enough to say that I'm the captain of my destiny.

제가 제 운명의 주인이라고 자신있게 말할 수 있을 것 같습니다.

From my room in the camp,

캠프에 있는 제 방에서,

I've been able to travel through books to Cairo,

전 책을 통해 카이로, 런던, 프랑스,

London and France,

and all the way to Columbia University in New York.

뉴욕에 있는 콜롬비아 대학까지 여행을 하죠.

And I know what most people may think about me,

대부분의 사람들이 저를

that I'm an internally displaced person.

난민으로 생각한다는 사실을 알아요.

That may be true, but I am more than that.

사실일지도 모르지만 저는 그 이상입니다.

I am patience, I'm hope, dreams,

전 인내심이 있고, 희망이 있고 꿈이 있으며

and with education, I can get where I want to be.

교육을 받으면, 제가 원하는 곳은 어디든지 갈 수 있어요.

Education in an IDP camp is hard,

IDP 캠프에서의 교육은 힘들고

and Otash has certainly had its ups and downs.

오타쉬는 분명히 좋은 점과 나쁜 점이 있어요.

At the beginning, there were no schools nearby.

처음에는 근처에 학교가 하나도 없었어요.

Now there are schools, but they are not always free.

이제 학교는 있지만 항상 무료는 아니에요.

And we don't always have access to electricity or access to internet

다른 많은 나라의 학교들처럼

저희가 언제나 인터넷과 전기를 사용할 수 있는 것도 아니고요.

like schools in many other countries.

But education should be free for every child,

하지만 교육은 모든 아이들에게 무료여야 해요.

and access to quality education should be a priority

좋은 교육을 하는 것은 제일 중요한 일이고

and available for all children.

모든 아이들은 교육을 받을 수 있어야 해요.

Meanwhile, as more people in Darfur have been displaced,

다르푸르주에서 점점 더 많은 사람들이 난민이 될수록

the schools inside our camp have become overcrowded.

저희 캠프에 있는 학교에는 학생들이 너무 많아졌어요.

But still, they have big dreams too.

하지만 그들도 큰 꿈이 있겠죠.

And in my state primary school exams,

주에서 주최하는 초등학교 시험에서

I came in third in the ranking out of thousands of students,

저는 수천 명 중 3등을 했고,

which was a huge achievement for me.

그건 제게 엄청나게 큰 성취였어요.

Soon I will take another test at the end of my secondary school,

곧 중학교가 끝날 때쯤 또 다른 시험을 볼 테고

and then I hope to progress onward to University,

이어서 저는 대학에 가고 싶습니다.

moving step by step closer to my ultimate goal.

제 최종 목표에 한 걸음씩 다가가는 거죠.

Along the way,

그러면서 전 3가지 언어를 배웠어요.

I've learned to speak three languages.

I speak fluently in Arabic,

아랍어, 영어와 터키어가 유창합니다.

English and Turkish.

And recently, I started to learn French.

최근에는 프랑스어를 배우기 시작했어요.

(French) J’ai de grands rêves.

제게는 큰 꿈이 있습니다.

(English) Learning languages makes me feel powerful,

언어를 배우는 것은 저를 더 강하게 만들어 도전하게 하고

as they challenge my mind.

And it also makes me feel I can communicate with other people,

다른 사람들과 소통할 수 있겠다고 생각하게 만들어줍니다.

which is important to a connected and equitable world.

연결되고 평등한 세상에 중요한 점이죠.

And also, it's one of the many ways that can bring us all together as humans.

또한 우리 모두를 하나로 묶을 수 있는 수많은 방법 중 하나죠.

Because of my academic achievement,

제 학업적 성취 덕분에,

a few years ago, UNICEF Sudan wrote an article about me

몇 년 전, 수단 유니세프에서 저에 관한 기사를 하나 썼는데

in which I shared my biggest dream

저는 제 가장 큰 꿈을 말했습니다.

to one day go to Columbia University

언젠가 콜롬비아 대학에 가서 의학을 공부한다는 꿈이요.

and study medicine.

And now today I am one of UNICEF Sudan Youth Advocates,

이제 저는 수단의 청소년 유니세프 대사 중 한 명으로서

championing the rights of other children to access quality education.

모든 아이들이 좋은 교육을 받을 권리를 갖도록 활동하고 있습니다.

I told you, I have big dreams.

말했죠, 제게는 큰 꿈이 있다고요.

Since becoming a Youth Advocate with UNICEF Sudan,

수단 청소년 유니세프 대사의 일원이 된 이후로

I've been emphasizing the importance of peace and education.

평화와 교육의 중요성을 계속 강조했습니다.

And I see how youth in the camp look up to me

캠프에 있는 아이들이 절 어떻게 우러러보는지도 알고

and how my parents and siblings ooze with pride

제 부모와 형제들이 제가 받은 기회를 얼마나 자랑스러워하는지도 알아서,

with the opportunities I have been given,

which makes me feel proud.

제가 자랑스러워요.

And I love seeing everyone in the camp wants also to fight for education.

캠프에 있는 모든 사람들이 교육을 위해 애쓰는 모습도 좋아합니다.

Recently, I had the opportunity to fly to the capital of Sudan, Khartoum.

최근에

전 수단의 수도, 하르툼에 갈 기회가 있었어요.

It was the first time for me to be on an airplane

생애 처음으로 비행기를 타봤고

and first time also to leave Nyala.

니알라를 떠난 것도 처음이었습니다.

I even had the opportunity to meet the prime minister of Sudan,

수단의 총리를 만날 기회도 있었는데,

along with other youth representing every state in Sudan,

수단의 모든 주들을 대표하는 저처럼 어린 대표자들과 함께였습니다.

which was truly overwhelming for me.

무척 주눅이 드는 경험이었습니다.

I, Makhtoum, from Otash IDP camp,

오타쉬 IDP 캠프 출신, 마크툼이 수단의 총리와 함께 있었습니다.

with the Prime Minister of Sudan.

But it was also an eye-opener.

하지만 제 눈을 뜨게 한 계기이기도 했습니다.

I connected with other youth who came to the capital

저는 수도에 온 다른 아이들과 얘기를 했습니다.

with a heart full of hope and a mind filled with determination,

가슴 가득한 희망과 굳은 결심으로

wanting to share their stories from their parts in their country.

그들이 있는 곳의 이야기를 서로 나눴습니다.

I realized that, despite our different cultural backgrounds, we were all one.

전 그때 문화적 배경이 달라도 모두가 하나라는 걸 알았습니다.

We have the same plight and needs.

우리의 사명과 필요는 같습니다.

But we all wanted one thing:

우리가 원하는 것은 평화와 공정한 대우입니다.

peace and fair treatment

and access to services and opportunities.

그리고 서비스와 기회입니다.

And this must be true with every child around the globe.

전 세계의 모든 아이들이 같은 생각일 것입니다.

The visit also reminded me

이 방문으로 저는 이 세상이 너무나 불공평하다는 것을 알았습니다.

that there is so much unfairness in this world.

As I was lying in my hotel room with A/C on and electricity,

에어컨과 전기가 있는 호텔방에 누워서

I thought of how I struggle in the camp to study and to sleep

캠프에서 전기 부족으로 잠자고 공부하는 것이 얼마나 힘들었는지 생각했습니다.

because of lack of electricity.

When I study, I rely on flashlights.

공부할 때는 손전등 불빛에 의지했습니다.

I can’t help but ask the question: Why?

‘왜?’라고 물을 수밖에 없었죠.

I realized that I'm in so many ways so lucky

전 제가 여러 면에서 운이 좋았다는 사실을 깨달았는데,

because I have opportunities to succeed in life,

저는 성공할 수 있는 기회를 얻었고,

and I have the great privilege to continue to increase awareness

전 세계의 저와 같은 아이들을 위한 교육 문제를

about education for all children like me and across the world.

계속해서 알릴 수 있는 특권을 얻었기 때문이죠.

Imagine if they were given the skills, power and knowledge.

그들이 기술과 힘과 지식을 받을 때를 생각해보세요.

Imagine the difference they would make in their life and in our world.

그들이 이 세계와 그들의 삶을 어떻게 바꿀지 생각해보세요.

They have big dreams, too.

그들도 원대한 꿈이 있습니다.

Education, just like electricity,

전기와 같이 교육도 소수에게만 당연한 것이어서는 안 됩니다.

shouldn't just be for some,

it's a necessity and a right.

교육은 생필품이고 권리예요.

Just like hopes, dreams and opportunity.

희망, 꿈, 기회처럼요.

Shining a way forward for each of us

우리에게 길을 비춰주면

and, in turn, allowing us to make the world better for others.

그 결과로 우리가 세상을 조금 더 좋게 만들 거예요.

I am Makhtoum Abdalla from Otash IDP camp,

전 오타쉬 IDP 캠프에서 온 마크툼 압달라입니다.

but I am so much more than that.

하지만 저는 그 이상입니다.

I say it proudly.

With the power of education,
