It's usually a verb.

It means to influence or change.

Significa influir o cambiar.

A quick way to remember ‘affect’ as a verb

Una forma rápida de recordar "afectar" como verbo

is to remember ‘a’ is for action.

es recordar que "a" significa acción.

Verbs are actions.

Los verbos son acciones.

Let’s look at some examples.

Veamos algunos ejemplos.

The first sentence says,

La primera frase dice:

‘Junk food affects your health.’

"La comida chatarra afecta tu salud".

We all know that junk food can change our health.

Todos sabemos que la comida chatarra puede cambiar nuestra salud.

It can make it bad or worse.

Puede hacerlo malo o peor.

The next sentence says,

La siguiente frase dice:

‘New technologies continue to affect how we live.’

"Las nuevas tecnologías siguen afectando nuestra forma de vivir".

This is something we also know.

New technologies change the way we live.

They make things easier. They make things faster.

They affect the way we live.

Afectan la forma en que vivimos.

Now, I will talk about ‘effect’.

Ahora hablaré del "efecto".

It's usually a noun.

Suele ser un sustantivo.

It means a result.

Significa un resultado.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

Veamos algunas oraciones de ejemplo.

The first sentence says,

La primera frase dice:

‘Pollution has a negative effect on the environment.’

"La contaminación tiene un efecto negativo en el medio ambiente".

We all know that pollution causes negative results in the environment.

Todos sabemos que la contaminación provoca resultados negativos en el medio ambiente.

You'll notice that in this sentence we used ‘effect’ as a noun

Notarás que en esta oración usamos "efecto" como sustantivo

– ‘a negative effect’.

: "un efecto negativo".

The next sentence says,

La siguiente frase dice:

‘Spicy food has a bad effect on my stomach.’

"La comida picante tiene un efecto negativo en mi estómago".

For some people spicy food causes some bad results in the body.

Para algunas personas, la comida picante provoca malos resultados en el cuerpo.

So again, we use ‘effect’ like result - a noun.

Now, let's do a checkup.

In the sentence below we need to use ‘effect’ and ‘affect’.

Take a moment to think about where we use these words.

The sentence says,

‘The _blank_ of the war will _blank_ the economy.’

Take a look at the first ‘blank’.

Remember, if there's a ‘the’,

Recuerde, si hay 'el',

we usually need a noun

so we use ‘effect’.

that means the results of the war
