Today is Day 20 and we're studying phrasal verbs with “grind”.

Grind up, grind down.

[GRIND] [UP] и [GRIND] [DOWN].

These two phrasal verbs don’t have anything to do with direction.

Вовсе не относятся к направлениям.

If you grind something up, you crush it into tiny little pieces.

Когда вы [GRIND] предмет [UP], вы его крошите на мелкие кусочки.

Grind up the cloves for the cookie recipe.

— [GRIND] [UP] гвоздику по рецепту для печенья.

She has a special machine to grind up the chicken.

— Есть у неё особое устройство, чтобы [GRIND] [UP] курицу.

Grind down means to wear away by pressure and movement.

[GRIND] [DOWN] — износиться под весом или давлением.

The stone was ground down over centuries.

— Камень стал [GROUND] [DOWN] спустя века.

We also use it figuratively.

Можно и в переносном значении.

When something grinds down on you, it makes you tired, it wears you out.

Когда что-нибудь вас [GRINDS] [DOWN], вы устаёте, вас изнуряет — [WEARS] [OUT].

Another phrasal verb! To wear out.

Ещё один глагол! [WEAR] [OUT].

Just like to grind down.

Как и [GRIND] [DOWN].

The stress of this 30-day challenge is grinding me down.

— Напряжение словарного месячника [GRINDING] меня [DOWN].

Or is wearing me out.

Или [WEARING] меня [OUT].

We can also use ‘grind on’ this way.

Ещё можно сказать [GRIND] [ON].

The stress of this project is really grinding on me.

— Нагрузка от затеи весьма [GRINDING] [ON] меня.

Grind on can also mean to take a long time, and it has a negative feeling about it.

Ещё [GRIND] [ON] говорят если действие затягивается.

This house renovation is just grinding on.

— Ремонт дома просто [GRINDING] [ON].

Grind out: this is to produce something.

[GRIND] [OUT] — производить.

This is like ‘bang out’, which you learned on day 2 of the challenge.

Как и [BANG] [OUT] из второго урока.

You don’t necessarily focus on skill or quality, but on getting it one.

Когда важно не качество работы, а её завершение.

I have to grind out that report.

— Я должна [GRIND] [OUT] отчёт.

I’m going to grind out another article by the end of the day.

— Я намерена [GRIND] [OUT] ещё одну статью до конца дня.

Grind away is the opposite, it means to work at something over time.

[GRIND] [AWAY] — наоборот — прикладывать много усилий.

Are you studying for the GRE?

— Ты готовишься к экзамену?

Yup, I’m grinding away every day.

— Ага, [GRINDING] [AWAY] каждый день.

Grind up, grind down, grind on, grind out, grind away.

Grind up — grind down — grind on — grind out — grind away.

You know, now that I think of it, there is a bonus grind on phrasal verb.

And that is when someone is doing some dirty dancing on you.

Then you would say "That person is grinding on me all night."

Grind begins with the GR consonant cluster.

Your lips will round for the R, rr-, gr-, as you make the G sound.

Grind. Make the G with the back of the tongue touching and pulling away from the soft palate, g- g- g-.

Make the R with the front of the tongue, pulling it back and up a bit.

Rr—grr--- the tip shouldn’t be touching anything.

Gr-ind. Then the AI as in BUY diphthong.

Drop your jaw at first, grrrii---

then bring the front of the tongue towards the roof of the mouth, leaving your tongue tip down.

Then just flip the tongue up so the top is at the roof of the mouth for the N.

And finally the D. Your tongue is already in position, you just need to make the D sound with the vocal cords,

[d] — [d] — [d] — [graɪnd].

Grind.

Grind [graɪnd]

If the next word begins with a consonant, you might drop the D.

Когда следующее слово начинается на согласный звук — выкидываем наш [d].

We sometimes drop the T and D when it comes between two other consonants.

Порой мы выкидываем звуки [t] и [d], когда они стоят между согласными.

Grind me down. Grind me--

Grind me down. [graɪn_mi]

There, the D comes between two consonants and I'm not saying the D.

Звук [d] стоит меж двух согласных, и я не произношу его.

Grind me down. Grind me down. Grrriinnme down.

Grind me down. [graɪn_mi] down.

If the next word begins with a vowel or diphthong, you definitely want to make the D.

Но если второе слово начинается с гласного или двугласного — тогда звук [d] произносим чётко.

Use it to connect the two words together.

Своего рода мостик между словами.

Grind away, d- d- da- way… da way.

Grind away [d] — [d] — [dəˈweɪ] — [dəˈweɪ]

Griinnddaway. Grind away.

Grind away [graɪnd_əˈweɪ]
