Let’s go back to a question you heard before: what’s your favourite thing to do?

So, what kind of music are you into?

I’m a big fan of blues, classic soul, things like that.

Here, you heard several useful phrases to talk about things you really like.

هكذا، سمعت عدة جمل مفيدة للتحدث عن أشياء تحبها فعلا

Can you remember any of them?

If you really like something, you can say:

إن كنت تحب شيئا يمكنك القول:

I really love…

أنا فعلاً أحب

I’m a big fan of…

أنا معجب كبير ب..

What I really like is…

ماأحبه حقا هو…

My favourite thing to do is… … makes me happy

يجعلني سعيداً..

In the gap, you can put a noun, or an -ing verb.

في الفراغ يمكنك وضع اسم، او فعل مستمر

For example:

مثال:

I really love seafood.

أنا حقا أحب ثمار البحر

Or: I really love swimming in the sea.

أو: أنا أحب حقا السباحة في البحر

This is true for all these phrases.

هذا صحيح لكل تلك الجمل

Look at two more:

انظر لاثنتين أخريين:

I’m a big fan of 80s glam rock.

أنا معجب كبير بفترة تألق الروك في الثمانينات

I’m a big fan of listening to music when I go jogging.

أنا معجب كبير بالاستماع للموسيقا أثناء الركض

You can also vary some of these phrases, to make them stronger or weaker, or just to add

يمكنك أيضا تنويع بعض هذه الجمل لجعلها أقوى أو أضعف أو فقط لإضافة

variety.

What I really enjoy is getting up late on a Sunday and going for coffee with friends.

My absolute favourite food is spicy chicken wings.

Doing yoga in the morning makes me feel good.

Can you make some sentences using these phrases?

You can talk about music, or any other topic you like.

So, we live in a town with all these great restaurants, and we’re going to KFC?

In this dialogue, you heard phrases to talk about low-level likes and dislikes.

في هذا الحوار ،سمعت عبارات تتحدث عن مستوى منخفض من الحب والكره

If you like something, but not that much, how can you say that?

إن كنت تحب شيئا ، ولكن ليس كثيرا،كيف تستطيع أن تقول ذلك?

Here are the three ways you heard:

هاهي الثلاث طرق التي سمعتها:

I quite like…

أحب جدا… .

It’s alright.

إنه جيد…

It’s not bad.

ليس سيئا.

The word alright doesn’t mean that something is good by itself.

كلمة جيد لا تعني أن الشيء جيد بحد ذاته

However, with a positive intonation, it can mean that you like something.

على أي حال،بنبرة إيجابية ،يمكنها أن تعني أنك تحب شيئا

Again, you can use these phrases with a noun or an -ing verb, like this:

مجددا،يمكنك استخدام هذه العبارات مع اسم أو فعل مستمر ، هكذا:

I quite like going for a short walk after lunch.

أحب جدا الذهاب بنزهة قصيرة مشيا بعد الغداء

The film was alright.

كان الفيلم جيدا

This garlic sauce is not bad!

صلصة الثوم هذه ليست سيئة!

What if you don’t like something?

ماذا إن كنت لا تحب شيئا?

What could you say?

ماذا يمكنك أن تقول?

Here are the phrases you heard in the dialogue:

هذه هي العبارات التي سمعتها في الحوار :

I’m not keen on…

لست مهتما ب…

I don’t like … so much … isn’t my thing

لا احب… كثيرا… إنه ليس نوعي

Let’s see how you could use them:

لنرَ كيف تستطيع استخدامهم

I’m not keen on horror films.

لست مهتما بأفلام الرعب

I don’t like going to the gym so much.

لا أحب الذهاب إلى النادي الرياضي كثيرا

Getting up early isn’t my thing.

الاستيقاظ باكرا ليس من عادتي (نوعي)

Again, you can use many of these phrases in different ways, by changing or adding words.

مجددا،يمكنك استخدام العديد من هذه العبارات عبر تغيير أو إضافة كلمات

For example:

مثال:

I quite enjoy cycling.

أستمتع جدا بركوب الدراجة.

I’m not massively keen on that plan.

لست مهتما جدا بهذه الخطة

Spending hours sitting on the beach isn’t exactly my thing.

قضاء ساغات بالجلوس على الشاطئ ليس بالضبط ماأحبه

What about you?

In our dialogue, we talked about food.

في حوارنا،تحدثنا عن الطعام

Can you use the language you’ve seen to make two or three sentences about yourself?

هل يمكنك استخدام اللغة التي رأيتها لكتابة جملتين أو ثلاثة عن نفسك?

You can write about food, or any other topic.

يمكنك الكتابة عن الطعام، أو أي موضوع آخر

For extra practice, say your sentences out loud.

لتدريب إضافي،قل جملك بصوت عالٍ

Say them several times, until the pronunciation is comfortable.

أعدها عدة مرات ، حتى يصبح اللفظ مريحا

Try to remember them, so that you can say them without reading.

جرب أن تتذكرها،بحيث تستطيع قولها دون قراءة

This way, you’ll remember the language better.

بهذه الطريقة،ستتذكر اللغة بشكل أفضل

Pause the video and write your sentences now; start again when you’re ready.

Okay, you’ve seen how to talk about things you like a lot, or things you like a little.

حسنا، رأيت كيفية التحدث عن أشياء تحبها كثيراً أو تحبها قليلاً

But what if you really don’t have an opinion about something?

لكن ماذا إن لم يكن لديك رأي واضح عن شيء ما

What a great movie!

ياله من فيلم رائع!

What did you think?

مارأيك؟

It was okay.

إنه جيد

You didn’t like it?

لم تحبه؟

I didn’t mind it.

لم أمانع مشاهدته

I’ve seen better; I’ve seen worse.

رأيت أفضل، ورأيت أسوأ

You’re difficult to please, aren’t you?

إسعادك صعب، أليس كذلك!

I thought it was amazing!

اعتقدت أنه كان مدهشا

Don’t you think he’s a great director?

ألا تظن أنه مخرج عظيم!

I really like everything he’s made.

أنا حقا أحب كل أعماله

I don’t have strong opinions about him.

ليس لدي رأي قوي بخصوصه

So, what do you like?

Honestly, I haven’t seen many movies that have impressed me recently.

I saw that new ‘Blade Runner’ film.

And, you didn’t like it?

Anyway, what shall we do now?

In that dialogue, I did not have a lot of strong feelings about, well, anything really.

Can you remember the words and phrases I used to express this?

Often, you can express this kind of idea just with a word or a gesture.

Imagine you’re watching something on TV, and someone asks you if it’s a good show

تخيل أنك تشاهد شيئا على التلفاز، وسألك أحدهم ان كان البرنامج جيدا

or not.

أو لا

You can express that it’s neither good nor bad by making a ‘meh’ noise and shrugging.

يمكنك التعبير عن إذا ماكان جيدا أو لا بإصدار صوت "مه" دون الالتفات

However, there are also some useful phrases you can use, such as:

على كل، هناك أيضا بعض العبارات المفيدة يمكن استخدامها مثل:

It’s okay.

هذا جيد.

I don’t mind…

لا أمانع..

I don’t have strong opinions about…

ليس لدي رأي قوي عن...

I can take it or leave it.

يمكنني اكماله أو تركه

I’m not bothered either way about…

لا فرق بين الحالتين..

Like the phrases you’ve seen in other sections, you can use these with a noun or an -ing verb,

كالعبارات التي رأيتها في الأقسام الأخرى، تستطيع استخدامها مع اسم أو فعل مستمر

except for I can take it or leave it, which is a fixed phrase, meaning that you can use it

ماعدا يمكنني إكمال أو ترك، فهي عبارة مصلحة، معناه انه يمكنك استخدامها

as a response to someone else’s question or suggestion.

كاجابة لسؤال شخص آخر أو اقتراح

Let’s see how you could use these phrases to talk about different things:

لنر كيف يمكنك استخدام هذه العبارات للتحدث عن أشياء مختلفة

The modern art museum was okay.

متحف الفن الحديث كان جيداً

I don’t mind doing housework.

لا أمانع القيام بالأعمال المنزلية

I don’t have strong opinions about which curtains we buy.

ليس لدي رأي قوي حول أي ستارة نشتري

I’m not bothered either way about where we go.

لا فرق لدي في الحالتين من حيث أين سنذهب

When you use okay, like the word alright, a lot depends on your intonation.

عندما تستخدم كلمة"جيد"، الكثير يعتمد على النبرة

The word okay literally means ‘not good and not bad’.

كلمة جيد حرفياً تعني، ليس سيئا وليس جيدا

However, with positive intonation, it can have a positive meaning, like quite good.

بأي حال، بنبرة إيجابية يمكنها أن تعطي معنى إيجابي

With negative intonation, it can mean something like not very good.

بنبرة سلبية، يمكنها أن تعني شيئا ليس جيدا كثيرا

Listen to the difference: It’s okay!

استمع للفرق : انه جيد!

It’s okay.

انه جيد.

It’s okay.

انه جيد

In this way, okay can mean different things.

بهذه الطريقة، جيد ممكن أن تعني اشياء مختلفة

Also, the phrase I’m not bothered either way is more informal, and could sound rude

or dismissive if you use it in the wrong situation, so think about where you are and who you’re

Okay, here you heard a lot of phrases to talk about something—or someone—you strongly

حسنا، هاقد سمعت عدة عبارات للتحدث عن شيء أو شخص،

dislike.

Can you remember any of them?

If you really dislike something, you can say:

ان كنت حقا تكره شيئا يمكنك القول:

I can’t stand…

I absolutely hate… … drives me crazy.

انا حقا اكره... .... يقودني للجنون

I have no time for…

ليس لدي وقت ل...

I really dislike…

انا حقا اكره..

As before, you use these phrases with a noun or an -ing verb.

كما سابقا، تستخدم هذه العبارات مع اسم أو فعل مستمر

For example:

مثال:

I can’t stand people who cut in line.

لا استطيع تحمل الناس الذين يتجاوزون الصف

I absolutely hate every song he’s ever made.

أنا حتما أكره كل أغانيه

Walking behind someone who walks really slowly drives me crazy!

المشي خلف شخص يمشي ببطء شديد يقودني للجنون

Some of these phrases are more general.

بعض هذه العبارات عامة.

You can use I can’t stand…, I absolutely hate…, or I really dislike… to talk about

يمكننا استخدام، لا أتحمل.. حتما أكره.. لا أحب... للتحدث عن

anything: people, things, or activities.

اي شيء : أشخاص، أشياء، نشاطات

However, with the other two phrases, you would use them to talk about people and

their habits.

For example:

She’s always late, which drives me crazy.

هي دائما تتأخر، مما يقودني للجنون

I have no time for people who say nice things to your face, then gossip behind your back.
