Today, we're looking at the Schwa.

Aujourd'hui, on se penche sur le schwa

It sounds like *the schwa sound*

Ça sonne comme un "e" fort (en français)

And it's represented in phonetics as this symbol : /Ə/

Et c'est représenté en phonétique par ce symbole : /ə/

You see that in dictionnaries when you're trying to find the pronunciation of words.

Vous trouverez ces symboles dans les dictionnaires, en cherchant la prononciation des mots.

This is the most common sound in the English language.

C'est le son le plus commun en anglais.

Why? Well, one of the reasons

Pourquoi?

L'une des raisons c'est que dans tous les mots qui finissent par 'er',

is any word which finishes with an "er" sound

is pronounced with the Schwa.

la terminaison est prononcée avec un schwa.

The /Ə/ sound.

Le son /ə/

So, firstly,

Donc, premièrement, répétez après moi :

repeat after me, make sure you have the Schwa sound right.

Soyez sûrs que vous avez un schwa correct :/ə/

I'm sure you were perfect, well done!

So, this word, we pronounce it like

Ever /evƏ/

Ever /evə/ (= jamais/toujours/déjà)

Better /betƏ/

Better /betə/ (=mieux/meilleur/améliorer)

Maybe you joined the last class with the glottal T and the true T,

Peut-être que vous avez vu la dernière leçon sur le T glottal et le T prononcé,

you can combine what you've learnt from these two classes.

Be'er /be'Ə/ (better with the glottal T and the Schwa)

/be'ə/

"be'er", so, it could be pronounced like that.

The same here :

"Wa'er" (water avec le glottal T et le schwa) or "water" (avec le schwa)

/wɔː'ə/ ou /wɔːtə/ (= eau)

Encore une fois, le 'er'

Again, the "er", pronounced like a schwa.

"Water" ou "wa'er", however you want to say it.

Selon comment vous voulez le dire.

Teacher /ti:ʧƏ/ (with the schwa)

Teacher /ti:ʧə/ (=professeur/instituteur)

Doctor /dɒktƏ/ (with the schwa)

Doctor /dɒktə/ (=docteur/médecin)

Adventure /ƏdventʃƏ/ (with the schwa)

Adventure /ədventʃə/ (=aventure)

So, any "er" sound at the end of a word

is pronounced with a Schwa.

Americans they pronounce the R very strongly, for example :

Les Américains prononcent le "R" très fortement,

par exemple,

an American would pronounce it

un américain prononcerait "ever" /evər/

"Better" /betər/

Water /watƏr/

"Water" /wɔ:tər/

I'm exagerating but

J'exagère, mais,

they pronounce the R, we pronounce the Schwa!

ils prononcent le 'r', on prononce le schwa!

Not only when a word finishes with an "er" sound,

Pas seulement lorsqu'un mot finit par 'er',

it also goes for the weak syllables in a word.

ça va aussi pour les syllabes non-accentuées d'un mot.

For example :

In this word, where is the stress?

Dans ce mot, où est l'accent tonique?

Well, it's in "-lice"

Il est sur '-lice'

"po-LICE"

"po-LICE" /pə'li:s/

The stress is here,

L'accent tonique est ici,

so the weak syllable

donc la syllabe non-accentuée

"po-" is pronounced, again, with the Schwa.

'po-' est prononcée avec un /ə/

Police

/pə'li:s/

The next one : where is the stress with this one?

Le prochain, où est l'accent tonique sur celui-ci?

Of course it's here, on "Ta-"

Il est là,

So this one takes the Schwa

Donc celle-ci prend le schwa

Taken (participe passé de Take = prendre) /teɪkən/

So, here has the Schwa sound.

This one, very commonly used word in particularly classrooms

Celui-ci, très communément utilisé,

I hear it like "pencil" (with a i sound)

Je l'entends /pensɪl/

No! Where is the stress?

Non! Où est l'accent tonique?

"PEN-"

Sur 'pen-',

So, "PEN-cil"

Donc, 'PEN-cil' /pensəl/

/-səl/

"-cil" has the schwa sound.

il y a le son schwa.
