During / While / Meanwhile - How to use them in English

Today we're doing the difference between during and while and later meanwhile

Dnes probereme rozdíl mezi DURING a WHILE. A později MEANWHILE.

They all mean "At the same time" or "In the middle of another action"

Všechny znamenají "v tu samou dobu" nebo "během jiného děje",

but we use them in different ways

ale užíváme je různými způsoby.

let me give you an example

Zde je příklad:

We'll start with during (ˈdʒʊərɪŋ) or during (ˈdjʊərɪŋ)

Začneme s DURING /dʒʊərɪŋ/ nebo /djʊərɪŋ/.

both pronunciations are fine

Obě výslovnosti jsou správné.

doesn't matter how you pronounce it

Je jedno, jak to vyslovíte,

but in a sentence there must be a noun after the word "During"

ALE po "during" musí být ve větě podstatné jméno.

I pronounce it ˈdʒʊərɪŋ

Já to vyslovuji /dʒʊərɪŋ/.

For example I want to say

Například chci říci:

I hate people who talk in the middle of movies

"I hate people who talk in the middle of movies."

it's very annoying don't do it

To je velmi otravné. Nedělejte to.

but I replace "in the middle of" with "during"

Ale místo "in the middle of" řeknu "during".

it means the same thing

Znamená to totéž

and after we have that noun: "movies"

a za tím máme podstatné jméno, "movies".

That's perfect! This is a good sentence! It's great!

To je výborné! To je dobrá věta! To je skvělé!

krásná věta.

But how about "while"? It means the same thing

Ale jak je to s "while"? Znamená totéž?

Can I replace "During" with "While"?

Mohu místo "During" použít "While"?

No! If I say "I hate people who talk while movies"

Ne! Když řeknu "I hate people who talk while movies",

this is a rubbish sentence

je to nesmyslná věta.

you can't say that

To říci nemůžete.

so how do we use while

Tak jak použijeme "while"?

With "while" you need a clause

Po slově "while" musí následovat vedlejší věta

A subject and a verb, a sentence

Podmět a přísudek, věta.

so let's imagine you're in bed, you're trying to sleep

Představme si, že jste posteli a snažíte se spát.

and then all of a sudden

A pak náhle

BANG!

you hear a loud noise

uslyšíte hlasitý zvuk.

so in the middle of trying to sleep

Takže během toho, co se snažíte usnout

you heard a noise, there was an interruption

jste uslyšeli zvuk, došlo k vyrušení.

while I was trying to sleep I heard a noise

"While I was trying to sleep I heard a noise."

and it doesn't matter where you put this sentence

A je jedno, kam tuto větu umístíte.

it could be first it could be after like

Může být na začátku, může následovat, jako:

I heard a noise while I was trying to sleep

"I heard a noise while I was trying to sleep."

That's fine it doesn't matter where you put it

To je v pořádku. Nezáleží na tom, kam jste ji umístili.

also notice the subject is the same in both sentences

Povšimněte si také, že v obou větách je tentýž podmět.

While I was trying to sleep, I heard a noise

"While I was trying to sleep, I heard a noise."

In this case you don't need to repeat the subject (ONLY REMOVE SUBJECT IN CONTINUOUS FORMS!)

V tomto případě nemusíte po "while" opakovat podmět

In the "While" sentence

so we could have

Můžeme tedy mít

"While trying..."

"While trying..."

we'd actually remove the BE verb for continuous tenses

Vlastně jsme odstranili pomocné sloveso BE pro průběhové časy.

Doesn't matter if it's WAS in past continuous or IS in present

Je jedno, jestli je to WAS v minulém průběhovém čase nebo IS v přítomném,

and the subject of course if it's the same

a samozřejmě podmět, pokud je stejný,

so it could read

takže by to mohlo znít:

"While trying to sleep, I heard a noise"

"While trying to sleep, I heard a noise"

Or of course

nebo samozřejmě

"I heard a noise while trying to sleep"

"I heard a noise while trying to sleep".

That's fine too

To je také správně.

but

ALE

if you remove the subject and the BE verb (AGAIN, ONLY REMOVE SUBJECT IN CONTINUOUS FORMS)

pokud odstraníte podmět a sloveso BE,

then it definitely definitely sounds more formal

zní to rozhodně, rozhodně formálněji.

so keep that in mind if you're trying to speak formally that sounds great

Mějte to tedy na mysli. Pokud se snažíte mluvit formálně, zní to skvěle,

but in casual conversation it's much more common not to do that

ale v běžném hovoru je mnohem obvyklejší to nedělat.

I would more commonly say

Hovorověji bych řekl:

"Oh my god last night while I was trying to sleep I heard a noise...

"Oh my god, last night while I was trying to sleep I heard a noise...

...and it made me cry"

...and it made me cry."

Should we use WHILE only with continuous tenses?

Musíme užívat "while" jen s průběhovými časy?

No not necessarily

Ne, nutně ne.

Let me give you an example

Podívejte se na příklad:

"I played drums while she slept"

"I played drums while she slept."

this is not a continuous tense

To není průběhový čas,

this is a past simple

je to minulý čas jednoduchý.

How about a present simple? Let's try that!

A což přítomný čas jednoduchý? Zkusme si to!

"She eats ice cream while I work"

"She eats ice cream while I work."

or the other way

nebo jinak

"While I work, she just eats ice cream"

"While I work, she just eats ice cream."

This is a present simple tense

To je přítomný čas jednoduchý,

so it doesn't have to be past

takže to nemusí být minulý,

doesn't have to be past continuous

nemusí to být přítomný čas průběhový,

it can be anything

může to být cokoliv.

just know that WHILE means "In the middle of THIS, THIS happens"

Jenom musíte vědět, že WHILE znamená "uprostřd" tohohle

or "At the same time as THIS, THIS happens"

nebo "ve stejnou dobu " jako tohle se toto děje.

that's how you use

Tak to používáme.

But how about "Meanwhile"? is that the same thing it sounds the same

Ale jak je to s MEANWHILE? Je to totéž? Zní to stejně.

How do I use that?

Jak ho mám použít?

Well this also means "at the same time" but more commonly it's used to

Také to znamená "ve stejnou dobu", ale obvykleji se to používá

talk about two different locations, two completely different subjects

při zmínce o dvou různých místech, dvou úplně jiných podmětech.

For example:

Například:

In one city Superman was flying and saving the world

"In one city Superman was flying and saving the world."

at the same time in a different city

Zároveň v jiném městě,

Or we could say MEANWHILE!

můžeme zde říci MEANWHILE

Remember "Meanwhile" means "at the same time"

Vzpomeňte si - "meanwhile" znamená "ve stejnou dobu",

but in a different thing

ale v jiné věci. Takže:

Superman was flying and saving the world

"Superman was flying and saving the world."

meanwhile in Gotham (in a different place)

"Meanwhile in Gotham" (na jiném místě)

Batman was crying

"Batman was crying."
