During / While / Meanwhile - How to use them in English

Today we're doing the difference between during and while and later meanwhile

Oggi facciamo la differenza tra durante e mentre e dopo nel frattempo

They all mean "At the same time" or "In the middle of another action"

Significano tutti "Allo stesso tempo" o "Nel mezzo di un'altra azione"

but we use them in different ways

let me give you an example

We'll start with during (ˈdʒʊərɪŋ) or during (ˈdjʊərɪŋ)

both pronunciations are fine

doesn't matter how you pronounce it

but in a sentence there must be a noun after the word "During"

I pronounce it ˈdʒʊərɪŋ

For example I want to say

Ad esempio voglio dire

I hate people who talk in the middle of movies

it's very annoying don't do it

è molto fastidioso non farlo

but I replace "in the middle of" with "during"

ma sostituisco "in mezzo a" con "durante"

it means the same thing

significa la stessa cosa

and after we have that noun: "movies"

e dopo abbiamo quel sostantivo: "film"

That's perfect! This is a good sentence! It's great!

But how about "while"? It means the same thing

Can I replace "During" with "While"?

Posso sostituire "During" con "While"?

No! If I say "I hate people who talk while movies"

NO! Se dico "odio le persone che parlano durante i film"

this is a rubbish sentence

questa è una frase spazzatura

you can't say that

non puoi dirla

so how do we use while

With "while" you need a clause

Con "while" hai bisogno di una proposizione

A subject and a verb, a sentence

so let's imagine you're in bed, you're trying to sleep

and then all of a sudden

you hear a loud noise

so in the middle of trying to sleep

and it doesn't matter where you put this sentence

I heard a noise while I was trying to sleep

That's fine it doesn't matter where you put it

also notice the subject is the same in both sentences

nota anche che il soggetto è lo stesso in entrambe le frasi

While I was trying to sleep, I heard a noise

Mentre stavo cercando di dormire, ho sentito un rumore

In this case you don't need to repeat the subject (ONLY REMOVE SUBJECT IN CONTINUOUS FORMS!)

In questo caso non lo fai Non c'è bisogno di ripetere il soggetto (SOLO RIMUOVERE IL SOGGETTO NELLE FORME CONTINUE!)

In the "While" sentence

Nella frase "While"

so we could have

così potremmo avere

"While trying..."

"Durante il tentativo..."

we'd actually remove the BE verb for continuous tenses

in realtà rimuoveremmo il verbo BE per i tempi continui

Doesn't matter if it's WAS in past continuous or IS in present

Non importa se è WAS nel passato continuo o IS nel presente

and the subject of course if it's the same

e il soggetto ovviamente se è lo stesso

so it could read

quindi potrebbe leggere

"While trying to sleep, I heard a noise"

"Mentre cercavo di dormire, ho sentito un rumore"

Or of course

O ovviamente "

"I heard a noise while trying to sleep"

Ho sentito un rumore mentre provavo a dormire"

That's fine too

Va bene anche questo,

but

ma se

if you remove the subject and the BE verb (AGAIN, ONLY REMOVE SUBJECT IN CONTINUOUS FORMS)

tu rimuovi il soggetto e il verbo BE (AGAIN, ONLY REMOVE SUBJECT IN CONTINUOUS FORMS)

then it definitely definitely sounds more formal

allora suona decisamente più formale

so keep that in mind if you're trying to speak formally that sounds great

quindi tienilo a mente se stai cercando di parlare in modo formale suona bene

but in casual conversation it's much more common not to do that

I would more commonly say

"Oh my god last night while I was trying to sleep I heard a noise...

...and it made me cry"

Should we use WHILE only with continuous tenses?

Dovremmo usare WHILE solo con i tempi continui?

No not necessarily

No, non necessariamente

Let me give you an example

"I played drums while she slept"

"Ho suonato la batteria mentre lei dormiva"

this is not a continuous tense

questo non è un tempo continuo

this is a past simple

questo è un passato semplice

How about a present simple? Let's try that!

Che ne dici di un presente semplice? Proviamo quello!

"She eats ice cream while I work"

"Lei mangia il gelato mentre io lavoro"

or the other way

o viceversa

"While I work, she just eats ice cream"

"Mentre lavoro, lei mangia solo il gelato"

This is a present simple tense

Questo è un presente semplice

so it doesn't have to be past

quindi non deve essere passato

doesn't have to be past continuous

non deve essere passato continuo

it can be anything

può essere qualsiasi cosa

just know that WHILE means "In the middle of THIS, THIS happens"

sappi solo che WHILE significa "Nel mezzo di QUESTO, accade QUESTO"

or "At the same time as THIS, THIS happens"

o "Nello stesso momento in cui accade QUESTO, accade QUESTO"

that's how you use

But how about "Meanwhile"? is that the same thing it sounds the same

How do I use that?

Well this also means "at the same time" but more commonly it's used to

talk about two different locations, two completely different subjects

For example:

In one city Superman was flying and saving the world

at the same time in a different city

Or we could say MEANWHILE!

Remember "Meanwhile" means "at the same time"

but in a different thing

Superman was flying and saving the world

Superman stava volando e salvando il mondo nel

meanwhile in Gotham (in a different place)
