During / While / Meanwhile - How to use them in English

Today we're doing the difference between during and while and later meanwhile

Hoje estamos fazendo a diferença entre durante e enquanto e depois enquanto isso

They all mean "At the same time" or "In the middle of another action"

Todos significam "Ao mesmo tempo" ou "No meio de outra ação"

but we use them in different ways

mas nós os usamos de maneiras diferentes

let me give you an example

We'll start with during (ˈdʒʊərɪŋ) or during (ˈdjʊərɪŋ)

Vamos começar com durante (ˈdʒʊərɪŋ) ou durante (ˈdjʊərɪŋ)

both pronunciations are fine

doesn't matter how you pronounce it

não importa como você pronuncia,

but in a sentence there must be a noun after the word "During"

I pronounce it ˈdʒʊərɪŋ

eu pronuncio ˈdʒʊərɪŋ

For example I want to say

Por exemplo, eu quero dizer que

I hate people who talk in the middle of movies

odeio pessoas que falar no meio de filmes

it's very annoying don't do it

é muito chato não faça isso

but I replace "in the middle of" with "during"

mas eu troco "no meio de" por "durante"

it means the same thing

significa a mesma coisa

and after we have that noun: "movies"

e depois temos aquele substantivo: "filmes"

That's perfect! This is a good sentence! It's great!

Isso é perfeito! Esta é uma boa frase! É ótimo!

You're beautiful!

Você é linda!

Beautiful sentence

Frase bonita

But how about "while"? It means the same thing

Mas que tal "enquanto"? Significa a mesma coisa

Can I replace "During" with "While"?

Posso substituir "Durante" por "Enquanto"?

No! If I say "I hate people who talk while movies"

Não! Se eu disser "Eu odeio pessoas que falam durante os filmes",

this is a rubbish sentence

esta é uma frase sem sentido,

you can't say that

você não pode dizer isso,

so how do we use while

então como usamos while

With "while" you need a clause

Com "while" você precisa de uma cláusula

A subject and a verb, a sentence

Um sujeito e um verbo, uma frase,

so let's imagine you're in bed, you're trying to sleep

and then all of a sudden

you hear a loud noise

so in the middle of trying to sleep

you heard a noise, there was an interruption

and it doesn't matter where you put this sentence

That's fine it doesn't matter where you put it

also notice the subject is the same in both sentences

While I was trying to sleep, I heard a noise

Enquanto eu estava tentando dormir, ouvi um barulho

In this case you don't need to repeat the subject (ONLY REMOVE SUBJECT IN CONTINUOUS FORMS!)

Neste caso você não não precisa repetir o assunto (APENAS REMOVA O ASSUNTO EM FORMAS CONTÍNUAS!)

In the "While" sentence

Na frase "While",

so we could have

então poderíamos ter

"While trying..."

"While try...", na

we'd actually remove the BE verb for continuous tenses

verdade, removeríamos o verbo BE para tempos contínuos

Doesn't matter if it's WAS in past continuous or IS in present

Não importa se é WAS no passado contínuo ou IS no presente

and the subject of course if it's the same

e o sujeito, claro, se for o mesmo,

so it could read

"While trying to sleep, I heard a noise"

"Enquanto tentava dormir, ouvi um barulho"

Or of course

Ou, claro,

"I heard a noise while trying to sleep"

"Ouvi um barulho enquanto tentava dormir"

That's fine too

Tudo bem também,

but

mas

if you remove the subject and the BE verb (AGAIN, ONLY REMOVE SUBJECT IN CONTINUOUS FORMS)

se você remova o sujeito e o verbo BE (NOVAMENTE, APENAS REMOVA O ASSUNTO EM FORMAS CONTÍNUAS),

then it definitely definitely sounds more formal

então definitivamente soa mais formal,

so keep that in mind if you're trying to speak formally that sounds great

então tenha isso em mente, se você está tentando falar formalmente, isso parece ótimo,

but in casual conversation it's much more common not to do that

mas em uma conversa casual é muito mais comum não fazer isso.

I would more commonly say

"Oh my god last night while I was trying to sleep I heard a noise...

barulho...

...and it made me cry"

Should we use WHILE only with continuous tenses?

Devemos usar WHILE apenas com tempos contínuos?

No not necessarily

Não, não necessariamente

Let me give you an example

"I played drums while she slept"

"Eu toquei bateria enquanto ela dormia"

this is not a continuous tense

this is a past simple

How about a present simple? Let's try that!

"She eats ice cream while I work"

or the other way

ou o contrário

"While I work, she just eats ice cream"

"Enquanto eu trabalho, ela apenas come sorvete"

This is a present simple tense

Este é um tempo presente simples,

so it doesn't have to be past

então não precisa ser passado

doesn't have to be past continuous

não precisa ser passado contínuo

it can be anything

just know that WHILE means "In the middle of THIS, THIS happens"

apenas saiba que WHILE significa "No meio disso, ISSO acontece"

or "At the same time as THIS, THIS happens"

ou "Ao mesmo tempo que ISSO, ISSO acontece" é

that's how you use

But how about "Meanwhile"? is that the same thing it sounds the same

How do I use that?

Well this also means "at the same time" but more commonly it's used to

talk about two different locations, two completely different subjects

For example:

In one city Superman was flying and saving the world

Or we could say MEANWHILE!

Remember "Meanwhile" means "at the same time"

but in a different thing

Superman was flying and saving the world
