So / Too / Very / Really - Learn English Grammar

I know I'm SO a good teacher, right? No! I'm SUCH a good teacher!

"Já vím, že jsem SO a good teacher, ano? - Ne! jsem SUCH a good teacher!

Today we're doing the differences between SO and TOO including very, really, and a few other things

Dnes budeme brát rozdíly mezi SO a TOO, včetně very, really a několika dalších.

Let's begin

Začněme.

"Very" is easy, it's 'more than normal' so you want to say "Wow! This thing is more than normal!"

"she's REALLY pretty"

REALLY is more common to say than VERY

This guy, "Oh my God, Wow! She speaks...Wow!"

Tento kluk - "Oh my God, Wow! She speaks...Wow!"

"She speaks SO well"

"She speaks SO well."

"So", "Very", "Really" with an adjective or an adverb

"So", "Very", "Really" + přídavné jméno nebo příslovce.

How about a noun? Let's add a noun to this.

A což podstatné jméno? Přidejme k tomu podstatné jméno.

"Girl", that's a noun

"Girl", to je podstatné jméno.

We cannot use "So" with a noun

S podstatným jménem "So" použít nemůžeme.

we have to change it

Musíme to změnit.

she's such a smart girl

"Such" and "So" mean the same thing

"Such" a "So" znamenají totéž,

But "so" for adjectives and adverbs

ale "so" je pro přídavná jména a příslovce.

"Such" for nouns

"Such" je pro podstatná jména.

That is an adjective

Toto je přídavné jméno,

but this describes the noun, right?

ale to popisuje podstatné jméno, ano?

because of that we need "Such"

Proto potřebujeme "Such".

Let's imagine you go to a shop, you want to buy some new jeans

Představme si, že jdete do obchodu, chcete si koupit nové džíny,

but there's no price "Excuse me, how much are these jeans?"

ale není tam cena. "Prosím, kolik stojí tyhle džíny?"

£500?

£500.

What! What?

Co! Co?

We know that "so" adds some emotion

Víme, že "so" dodává emoci,

some "Wow that is a lot of that thing!"

So maybe he will say...

"Wow they're expensive"

"They are SO expensive!"

This guy however, he will say "TOO"

Avšak tenhle člověk řekne"TOO".

So what is the difference between them?

Jaký je v tom tedy rozdíl?

"TOO" means it's excessive, it's more than you want, more than you like

"TOO" znamená, že je to přemrštěné, více než chcete, více než se vám líbí,

maybe it's impossible to do this thing now

možná že teď není možné to teď provést.

That's why "too" might seem bad in some situations

Proto se "TOO" může zdát v určitých situacích jako něco špatného.

So, the difference

He is saying "wow they are SO expensive" but maybe he has enough money

That's why he says "too" "too expensive"

I've heard students say "wow it's it's too cheap, it's too cheap!"

Slyšel jsem studenty, jak říkají: "wow it's too cheap!"

They think it's that's a good thing it's "wow cheap cheap cheap!"

Pomyslí si, to je dobré, levné!

But

If I hear "TOO cheap"

Ale

když slyším "TOO cheap",

I'm thinking "Hmm TOO cheap"? There must be a problem with that thing

The student should have said "wow it's so cheap"

Ten student měl říci "wow it's so cheap".

another example let's say you want to put on some makeup

Jiný příklad: řekněme, že se chcete nalíčit.

so you try

No. That's more than we need

"Ne. To je víc, než potřebujeme,

That's too much! That's too much makeup

to je moc! To je moc líčení."

So you try again

Tak to zkusíte znovu.

now your friend thinks you're crazy

What is more than "too much"?

you can add emphasis by adding...

That's WAY too much! That's FAR too much

WAY and FAR add emphasis

WAY a FAR přidávají důraz.

It's more than 'TOO MUCH'

Je to více než "TOO MUCH".

Dude, this is a ridiculous amount of makeup

now one thing about this is, we used "too MUCH" why "too MUCH"?

"makeup" is a noun

"líčidlo/makeup" je podstatné jméno.

an uncountable noun

Nepčítatelné / látkové.

with uncountable nouns

U nepočítatelných podstatných jmen

you'll put "TOO MUCH + uncountable noun"

se užívá "TOO MUCH + nepočítatelné jméno".

"That's WAY TOO MUCH makeup"

Honestly this will probably be me very soon

Upřímně řečeno, tohle bych asi byl velmi brzy já,

I eat too many donuts

it's excessive it's more than I need

Je to přehnané, je to více, než potřebuji.

notice I used "too MANY" not "too MUCH"

Všimněte si, že užívám "too MANY", ne "too MUCH".

too MANY because "Donuts" is a noun

Too MANY, protože "koblihy" jsou podstatné jméno,

but it's a countable noun

ale počítatelné podstatné jméno.

so with countable nouns, too MANY

S počítatelnými podstatnými jmény je "too MANY".

If we change the noun to "Food"

Když jméno změníme na "food / jídlo",

that's an uncountable noun.

Okay final one, we'll put everything we've learnt into this one example

he opens his test, looks at the questions and thinks...

Otevře test, podívá se na otázky a pomyslí si:

"Wow this is harder than normal"

"Wow this is harder than normal" (to je těžší než normálně)

What will he say? He just wants to say "more than normal" just that

Co řekne? Chce jen říci "more than normal", jen to.

"This is VERY hard"

Remember he could also say

Vzpomeňte si, že by také mohl říci:

"This is REALLY hard"

and again REALLY is more common, I use REALLY more than VERY

Opět, REALLY je běžnější, já užívám REALLY více než VERY.

So "Really", more common to use

Tedy "really", běžněji používané.

Further into the test he sees "Oh my god this is... wow this is hard!"

What can he say?

This is SO hard!

"SO" it adds emphasis, it adds emotion

and remember to use the article if it needs one

SO! He speaks SO fast, SO quickly.

Remember I can understand him so it's not TOO fast or TOO quickly

Pamatujte si: rozumím mu, takže to není "TOO fast" ani "TOO quickly".

"Tired" is the adjective

"Tired / Unavený" je přídavné jméno.

Of course I am TOO tired! No! I can't stay awake anymore! I'm TOO tired

Samozřejmě "I am TOO tired! Nemohu už zůstat vzhůru, jsem příliš unaven."

and finally number 5)

A nakonec 5).

"Wow, this lesson was good! Wow! Good!"
