So / Too / Very / Really - Learn English Grammar

I know I'm SO a good teacher, right? No! I'm SUCH a good teacher!

"I'm so a good teacher"? Non! "I'm such a good teacher!'

Today we're doing the differences between SO and TOO including very, really, and a few other things

Aujourd'hui, on se penche sur les différences entre "So" et "Too", en passant par "very", "really", et autres trucs.

There is a test at the end of this video, so stay for that.

Let's begin

C'est parti!

"Very" is easy, it's 'more than normal' so you want to say "Wow! This thing is more than normal!"

"Very" (=très), c'est facile, ça veut dire "plus que la normale"

Donc, si vous voulez dire "wow! Cette chose est plus que normale"

"She is VERY pretty" or "she's...

"Elle est très belle" ou "elle est...

"she's REALLY pretty"

"vraiment belle."

REALLY is more common to say than VERY

"Really" (=vraiment) est plus utilisé que "very" (=très)

But just know that they're basically the same thing

mais en gros, ça veut dire la même chose.

She's very pretty, she's really pretty

"Elle est très belle", "elle est vraiment belle"

but when this guy says "Wow she's SO pretty"

mais quand ce gars-là dit "wow she's so pretty"

that adds some emotion to his sentence

ça ajoute de l'émotion à sa phrase.

"WOW! she's pretty"

"Wow! Elle est belle!"

It's a bit stronger than VERY or REALLY

C'est un peu plus fort que "very" ou "really"

With "Very", "Really", and "So"

Avec "very", "really" et "so",

the next word can be an adjective like "pretty"

le prochain mot peut être un adjectif comme "pretty"

or an adverb like...

ou un adverbe comme

This time they're talking about how well she speaks French

Cette fois, ils parlent du fait qu'elle parle bien français,

This guy, more than normal, "She speaks very well"

ce gars pense qu'elle parle mieux que la normale : "she speaks very well"

This guy, "Oh my God, Wow! She speaks...Wow!"

et ce gars pense "oh mon dieu... elle parle... wow!"

"She speaks SO well"

"She speaks so well."

"So", "Very", "Really" with an adjective or an adverb

"So", "very", "really", avec un adjectif ou un adverbe.

How about a noun? Let's add a noun to this.

Et pour les noms? Ajoutons un nom à la phrase.

"Girl", that's a noun

"girl" (=fille), c'est un nom.

We cannot use "So" with a noun

On ne peut pas utiliser "so" avec un nom.

we have to change it

On a besoin de modifier "so".

she's such a smart girl

"She's such a smart girl"

"Such" and "So" mean the same thing

"Such" and "so" veulent dire la même chose

But "so" for adjectives and adverbs

mais on utilise "so" avec des adjectifs et des adverbes,

"Such" for nouns

"such" avec des noms.

That is an adjective

"Smart" c'est un adjectif

but this describes the noun, right?

mais un adjectif qui décrit un nom, pas vrai?

because of that we need "Such"

A cause de ça, on utilise "such".

Let's imagine you go to a shop, you want to buy some new jeans

Imaginons que vous allez dans un magasin et vous voulez acheter un nouveau jean,

but there's no price "Excuse me, how much are these jeans?"

mais il n'y a pas de prix. - "excusez-moi, combien il coûte ce jean?"

£500?

"500 livres sterling?"

What! What?

Hein? Quoi?!

We know that "so" adds some emotion

On sait déjà que "so" apporte de l'émotion dans la phrase,

some "Wow that is a lot of that thing!"

en mode "oh la la c'est beaucoup!"

So maybe he will say...

Donc peut-être qu'il va dire

"Wow they're expensive"

"Wow.. c'est cher!"

"They are SO expensive!"

"C'est super cher!"

This guy however, he will say "TOO"

Ce gars, par contre, il va dire "too"...

So what is the difference between them?

Quelle est la différence entre les deux?

"TOO" means it's excessive, it's more than you want, more than you like

"Too" signifie que c'est excessif, c'est plus que tu ne voudrais ou aimerais.

maybe it's impossible to do this thing now

Peut-être que ce n'est pas possible de faire cette chose maintenant.

That's why "too" might seem bad in some situations

C'est la raison pour laquelle "too" peut sembler être négatif dans certaines situations.

So, the difference

Donc, la différence c'est :

He is saying "wow they are SO expensive" but maybe he has enough money

lui, il dit "wow, c'est vraiment cher" mais peut-être qu'il a assez d'argent.

it's still a lot of money but he has enough

C'est toujours beaucoup d'argent, mais il a assez.

this guy however

Lui, par contre,

"Maybe I don't have enough money", or

Il n'a peut-être pas assez d'argent, ou

"It's more money than I want to spend"

c'est plus d'argent qu'il ne veut dépenser.

That's why he says "too" "too expensive"

C'est pour ça qu'il dit "too" (=trop), "too expensive" (=trop cher)

I've heard students say "wow it's it's too cheap, it's too cheap!"

J'ai déjà entendu des élèves dire "wow it's too cheap"

They think it's that's a good thing it's "wow cheap cheap cheap!"

Ils pensent que c'est une bonne chose : "c'est vraiment pas cher!"

But

If I hear "TOO cheap"

Mais,

quand j'entends "too cheap"

I'm thinking "Hmm TOO cheap"? There must be a problem with that thing

j'ai tendance à penser que si c'est si peu cher, c'est qu'il y a un problème.

The student should have said "wow it's so cheap"

L'élève devrait dire "wow, it's so cheap!".

another example let's say you want to put on some makeup

Un autre exemple : imaginons que vous voulez vous maquiller.

so you try

Donc vous essayez.

No. That's more than we need

Non, là, c'est plus que nécessaire...

That's too much! That's too much makeup

"C'est trop, là! Trop de maquillage!"

So you try again

Donc, vous réessayez.

now your friend thinks you're crazy

Et maintenant, votre amie pense que vous êtes folle.

What is more than "too much"?

Qu'est ce qui veut dire plus que "trop"?

you can add emphasis by adding...

Vous pouvez amplifier le mot en ajoutant...

That's WAY too much! That's FAR too much

"That's way too much! That's far too much!" (= c'est beaucoup trop!)

WAY and FAR add emphasis

"Way" and "far" amplifient la signification :

It's more than 'TOO MUCH'

donc c'est plus que "too much"

Dude, this is a ridiculous amount of makeup

En même temps, là, c'est beaucoup trop.

if I were a girl, that's probably what I would do

Si j'étais une fille, c'est probablement ce que je ferais...

I'm not that smart

je suis pas très doué avec ça...

now one thing about this is, we used "too MUCH" why "too MUCH"?

Une chose à retenir : on utilisé "too much", pourquoi?

because

Car

"makeup" is a noun

"Makeup" (=maquillage) est un nom;

an uncountable noun

un nom indénombrable.

with uncountable nouns

Avec les noms indénombrables,

you'll put "TOO MUCH + uncountable noun"

on utilise "Too much + le nom indénombrable"

"That's WAY TOO MUCH makeup"

Honestly this will probably be me very soon

Bon, ça c'est moi probablement très bientôt,

because

parce que

I eat too many donuts

je mange trop de beignets.

it's excessive it's more than I need

C'est excessif, plus que ce dont j'ai besoin.

notice I used "too MANY" not "too MUCH"

Remarquez que j'ai utilisé "too many" et pas "too much",

too MANY because "Donuts" is a noun

"too many" parce que "beignet" est un nom,

but it's a countable noun

mais c'est un nom dénombrable!

so with countable nouns, too MANY

Donc, avec des noms dénombrables, "too many",

If we change the noun to "Food"

si on change le nom de "beignet" à "nourriture"

that's an uncountable noun.

qui est un nom indénombrable,

Now it's...

ça devient...

Too MUCH food I eat too MANY donuts

"Too much" food, I eat "too many" doughnuts.

You know what, I'm not sorry, they're delicious!

Et vous savez quoi, je suis même pas désolé, c'est délicieux!

Okay final one, we'll put everything we've learnt into this one example

Ok, pour le dernier, on va utiliser tout ce qu'on vient d'apprendre dans cet exemple.

This student has a test

Cet élève a un contrôle,

he opens his test, looks at the questions and thinks...

il ouvre son sujet, regarde les questions et pense :

"Wow this is harder than normal"

"wow, c'est plus dur que la normale"

What will he say? He just wants to say "more than normal" just that

Qu'est ce qu'il va dire? Il veut juste dire "plus que la normale", juste ça.

"This is VERY hard"

Remember he could also say

Souvenez-vous qu'il pourrait aussi dire :

"This is REALLY hard"

and again REALLY is more common, I use REALLY more than VERY

et encore une fois, "really" est plus commun, j'utilise plus "really" que "very".

So "Really", more common to use

Donc, "really", plus communément utilisé.

Further into the test he sees "Oh my god this is... wow this is hard!"

Plus loin dans le contrôle, il voit un truc et "oh mon dieu c'est dur!"

Wow! This is hard!

"Wow... c'est dur!"

What can he say?

Qu'est ce qu'il peut dire?

This is SO hard!

"This is SO hard!"

"SO" it adds emphasis, it adds emotion

"So" amplifie la valeur de l'adjectif et ajoute de l'émotion,

It adds that WOW to this adjective or adverb

ça rajoute cet effet "wow" à l'adjectif ou à l'adverbe.

Now we add a noun

Et si on ajoute un nom,

remember with a noun how do we change it?

souvenez-vous, avec un nom, comment on change ça?

SUCH a hard test!

"Such a hard test!"

"This is SUCH a hard test! Oh my god!"

Again SO and SUCH, they mean the same thing

Encore une fois, "so" et "such" veulent dire la même chose,

but such is with a noun

mais "such" est utilisé avec un nom.

and remember to use the article if it needs one

Et souvenez-vous d'utiliser un article si nécessaire.

this time he wants to say "No! This test is impossible!"

Cette fois, il veut dire "non, ce contrôle est impossible!"

Not SO hard, but...

On ne va pas utiliser "so hard" mais

Too "This is TOO hard! I'm leaving!"

"too hard" : "C'est trop dur, je m'en vais!"

So next time you want to say "She's TOO beautiful" or "It's TOO cold"

Donc, la prochaine fois que vous voulez dire "she's too beautiful" ou "it's too cold",

Maybe you want to say she's SO beautiful it's SO cold

peut-être qu'en fait vous voulez dire "she's so beautiful", "it's so cold"

just be careful which one you mean

Faites juste attention à ce que vous voulez dire.

Numéro 2 :

But I don't like how many people die in Game of Thrones

Mais je n'aime pas le nombre de gens qui meurent dans Game of Thrones

I'm going to stop watching

Je vais arrêter de regarder.

TOO many people are dying! I don't like it! I'm not going to watch anymore!

"Too many people are dying". Je n'aime pas ça, je ne vais plus regarder.

Bye bye Game of Thrones! oh no no

Au revoir Game of Thrones! Oh, non, non,

Game of Thrones til I die!

Game of Thrones jusqu'à la mort!

Number 3) Wow I can understand him but he speaks very very fast Wow

Numéro 3 :

"Bon, je peux le comprendre mais il parle très très vite... wow."

Remember I can understand him so it's not TOO fast or TOO quickly

Souvenez-vous, je peux le comprendre, donc ce n'est pas trop rapide (too fast/ too quickly).

Number 4)

Numéro 4 :

Ugh! Tired! I can't stay awake anymore!

"Urgh.. je suis fatigué! Je peux pas rester éveillé plus longtemps,

I must sleep now

je dois dormir maintenant!"

"Tired" is the adjective

"Tired" (=fatigué) c'est l'adjectif.

Of course I am TOO tired! No! I can't stay awake anymore! I'm TOO tired

Bien sûr, c'est "too tired"! "Non! Je ne peux pas rester éveillé plus longtemps, je suis trop fatigué!"

and finally number 5)

Et enfin, numéro 5 :

"Wow, this lesson was good! Wow! Good!"

"I learned a lot!"

"J'ai beaucoup appris!"

Wow! Good!
