Have you ever tried to explain Ramadan to someone but you just don't have the words?

هل حاولت أن تخبرشخصا عن رمضان ولكن ليس لديك كلمات

Well today I'm going to give you the vocabulary some expressions and

حسنا اليوم أنا سوف أعطيك الكلمات و بعض التعبيرات و

the grammar you'll need to explain Ramadan to everyone!

القواعد التى سوف تحتاجها عندما تشرح رمضان لكل الناس !

Let's start with some important times of the day

دعنا نبدأ مع بعض الأوقات المهمة فى اليوم

In the morning when the sun goes up we call that:

فى الصباح عندما تصعد الشمس لأعلى ندعو ذلك :

"Sunrise", or "Dawn"

"شروق الشمس" أو "البزوغ"

When the sun goes down, we can call it "Sunset"

وعندما تنزل الشمس لأسفل نسمية "الغروب"

Not so commonly "Sundown", or "Dusk"

وليست شائعة " نزول الشمس" أو "الغسق"

So maybe in your explanation you need to explain at what times things happen

وذلك أحتمال فى شرحك قد تحتاج إلى متى تحدث الأشياء

The next important words that you might need is this:

الكلمة المهمة التالية التى قد تحتاجها هى :

When you do this. When you talk to God or say something special to God

عندنا تفعل ذلك. عندما تناجى ربك أو تحدثة بخصوصية

That is when you:

ذلك عندما :

Pray

تصلى

"Pray" is a verb, and it's a regular verb

"تصلى" هو فعل منتظم

So in the past, it's just "Prayed"

ولذلك فى الماضى مجرد أن تقول "صليت"

What's the noun of "Pray"?

ما هو الأسم من "يصلى"

The noun is: "Prayer"

الأسم "صلاة"

The pronunciation, be very careful "Prayer"

النطق كن حريصا __

Repeat it with me if you want to: "Prayer"

أعد معى إذا أردت __

You can use the verb "to say"

ويمكنك أستخدام الفعل

"To say" a prayer

تؤدى"الصلاة"

Remembering of course that it is a countable noun

تذكر بالتأكيد إنها تعد

and you say one of them- one of them? many of them? I don't know

وتقول واحد منهم ؟ عدد منهم ؟ أنا لا أعرف

"Say a prayer"

الصلاة

That's the expression

هذا هو التعبير

When you want to say that you don't eat any food for a length of time:

عندما تريد أن تقول أنك لا تأكل أى طعام لمدة معينة من الوقت

This is when you:

هذا عندما تكون:

"Fast". Again it's a regular verb

"صائم". مرة أخرى إنها فعل منتظم

So "Fast", "Fasted", "Fasted"

ولذلك "صائم"و"صمت"والتصريف الثالث"صمت"

So maybe you want to talk about how long you fast for

ولذلك ربما تريد أنت تتحدث عن المدة

Or from when in the day until when in the day

أو من متى فى اليوم إلى متى فى اليوم

One word which I guess is important to Ramadan is this one:

كلمة مهم التى أعتقد أنها مهمة فى رمضان هذه:

When you can follow rules then you have...

عندما تتبع الأوامر يكون لديك...

"Discipline"

أنضباط

That is a noun, it can be a verb but we'll use it as a noun in this case

هى أسم و يمكن أن تكون فعل ولكن سنستخدمها على أنها أسم فى تلك الحالة

"To have discipline", that's the expression

لديك انضباط. هذا هو التعبير

Now be careful, "Discipline" is an uncountable noun

الآن كن حذرا " الانضباط" يكون اسم غير معدود

So we don't say "Have A discipline"

ولذلك لا نقول ـــــ

No

لا

You HAVE discipline - You can follow the rules

أنت لديك انضباط - أنت تتبع القواعد

Or you DON'T HAVE discipline - you can't follow the rules and you're a bad child

أو ليست لديك انضباط - أنت لا تتبع القواعد أنت فتى سيئ

Now when you really really want food you can say:

الآن عندما تكون تريد الطعام بشدة تستطيع أن تقول :

That you are "hungry" now that's the ordinary adjective

أنك "جائع" الآن هذة صفة عادية

But if you want to say you're very very hungry, you can say that you are...

ولكن أذا أردت أن تقول أنك جائع بشدة, يمكنك أنت تقول أنك....

"Starving"

"تموت جوعا"

This is the extreme version of "hungry"

إنها نوع شديد من "الجوع"

Pronunciation:

النطق:

Now be careful:

الآن كن حذرا

"To starve" literally means you're dying of hunger

"تموت جوعا" حرفيا تعنى أنك تموت من الجوع حقا

Which is awful and it's terrible

وذلك مروع ومريع

But English people are a little bit ridiculous and we like to exaggerate everything

ولكن الأنجليزيين سخفاء بعض الشئ و نحب أن نبالغ فى كل شيئ

For example if it's raining, we will say "I'm dying!"

مثال عندما تمطر نحن سوف نقول أنا أموت

and if you're more than a little bit hungry we will say "I'm starving"

و عندما تكون جائع بعض الشئ نحن سوف نقول "أنى أموت جوعا"

Yeah we're ridiculous, I know

نعم نحن سخفاء, أنا أعرف

So in english culture, it's perfectly acceptable to say "I am starving"

ولذلك الثققافة الأنجليزية, مقبول تماما أن تقول "أموت جوعا"

It doesn't mean it literally, but that's what we say

هى لا تعنى ذلك حرفيا ولكن هذا ما نقول

The next expression is this:

التعبير التالى هو:

"To take something for granted"

"تأخد شئ من كمنحة من غير أمتنان"

Now this has a few meanings

الآن أنها لها عدة معانى

But in this context, it means that you are not grateful for something

ولكن فى هذا السياق هى تعنى أنت غير ممتن لهذا الشئ

Or you undervalue it, you don't appreciate the true value of something

أو أنك لا تقدره و لا تقدر قدر الشئ الحقيقى

Or you assume that it's always going to be there

أو أنك تفترض أن هذا من الطبيععى حدوثة

Basically it just means that you're not showing your appreciation for something

فى الأساس أنها تعنى مجرد أنك لا تظهر تقديرك لشئ ما

For example:

مثال:

Maybe she does all the cleaning in the house, and all day he just plays xbox

ربما هى فعلت كل أعمال التنظيف فى المنزل ,وهو يلعب طوال اليوم "xbox"

He never says thank you, NOTHING!

هو لم يقل شكرا أبدا , لا شئ !

He's very ungrateful

هو يكون غير ممتن

In this case she can say

فى تلك الحالة هى يمكن أن تقول

"He takes me for granted"

"هو لا يقدر ما فعلت"

Now some grammar you might need to be careful with is "During" and "While"

الآن بعض القواعد التى قد تحتاج ان تكون حذرا معا وهى "أثناء" "فى حين "

Let me explain the difference

دعنى أشرح الفرق

What is the difference between "During" and "While"?

ما هو الفرق بين " أثناء"و "فى حين"

Well they both mean "in the middle of an event"

حسنا كلا الكلمتين تعنى "فى منتصف الحدث"

Or at the same time an event is happening

أو فى نفس وقت حدوث الحدث

But this is how we use them:

ولكن هذا هو كيف نستخدمهم:

"During" has to have a noun afterwards

"أثناء"يجب أن تحصل على أسم بعدها

So for example: In this situation we could say during...

ولذلك مثال: فى هذة الموقف نستطيع قول أثناء....

"During dinner". 'Dinner' is a noun, we can say "during dinner"

"أثناء الأفطار".الأفطار أسم و يمكن قول ـــ

Can I say "while dinner"? Nope!

هل يمكن أن أقول " فى حين الأفطار"؟ لا !

I would have to use a situation with a subject, for example:

أن يجب سوف أستخدم موقف مع الفاعل

"While I was eating dinner"

"فى حين كنت أتناول العشاء"

So we want to add some more information to this

ولذلك نريد أضافة بعض المعلومات لذلك

In the middle of dinner, something happened!

فى منتصف العشاء, حدث شئ !

What happened?

ماذا حدث ؟

"In the middle of dinner, Aly arrived"

"فى منتصف العشاء وصل على"

Okay so we could say: "During dinner, Aly arrived"

حسنا يمكن أن نقول: أثناء العشاء وصل على"

It flows better to say "Aly arrived during dinner"

يكون أفضل "على وصل أثناء العشاء"

But in writing, yeah you could say "During dinner, Aly arrived"

ولكن فى الكتابة , نعم تستطيع قول"أثناء العشاء وصل على"

With "While": "While I was eating dinner, Aly arrived"

مع"فى حين": "فى حين كنت أتناول العشاء وصل على"

or "Aly arrived while I was eating dinner"

أو " على وصل فى حين كنت أتناول الطعام

So now you have the vocabulary the expressions

وبالتالى الآن لديك الكلمات والتعبيرات

and the grammar that you need to explain how Ramadan works to all your non-muslim friends

والقواعد التى تحتاجها لشرح رمضان لكل أصدقائك الغير مسلمين
