An English Lesson: What to say after someone says, "I'm sorry!"

Have you ever had it where someone apologized

क्या आपके साथ कभी ऐसा हुआ है कि किसी ने

to you in English or someone said sorry to you in English?

आपसे अंग्रेज़ी में माफ़ी माँगी हो या सॉरी कहा हो?

And did you know what to say afterwards?

और क्या आप जानते हैं कि आपको जवाब में क्या कहना चाहिये?

Well in this English lesson

अंग्रेज़ी की इस कक्षा में

I will go over eight different phrases

मैं आपको उन आठ वाक्यों के बारे में बताऊँगा

that you can use after somebody apologizes to you,

जो आप किसी से कह सकते हैं जब वो आपसे अंग्रेज़ी में माफ़ी माँगें

or after they say sorry to you in English.

या सॉरी कहें।

Well hey, welcome to this little English lesson

on what to say after someone apologizes to you in English.

जिसमें आप सीखेंगे कि आपको क्या कहना चाहिये जब आपसे कोई अंग्रेज़ी में माफ़ी माँगे।

So what I'm going to try and do is

मैं ये कोशिश करूँगा कि

give you eight different situations

आपको आठ अलग-अलग तरह की परिस्थितियों के बारे में बताऊँ

where someone might apologize to you.

जिनमें आपसे कोई माफ़ी माँग सकता है।

And then give you the best phrase I think

और फिर आपको वो वाक्य बताने की कोशिश करूँगा जो मुझे लगता है

that you should use in that situation.

आपको उस हालत में इस्तेमाल करना चाहिये।

The first example would be if someone forgets your birthday.

पहला उदाहरण है, अगर कोई आपका जन्मदिन भूल जाए।

Maybe your birthday is on July 1st and it is now July 2nd

मान लीजिये आपका जन्मदिन 1 जुलाई को होता है लेकिन आज 2 जुलाई है

and your brother has not phoned you

और आपके भाई ने आपको जन्मदिन की बधाई देने लिये

to say happy birthday to you.

फ़ोन नहीं किया।

Maybe on July 2nd the phone rings and it's your brother.

मान लीजिये 2 जुलाई को आपके भाई आपको फ़ोन करते हैं

And your brother says, "I'm sorry I forgot your birthday."

और कहते हैं, "I'm sorry I forgot your birthday"

Two things you could say, "It's ok!" or "That's ok!"

आप उनसे कह सकते हैं, "It's ok!" या "That's ok!"

Those would both be great responses in a situation

जब कोई आपका जन्मदिन भूल जाए

where someone forgets your birthday.

तो ये कहना सही रहेगा।

Hopefully people don't forget your birthday too often.

उम्मीद है लोग आपका जन्मदिन बार-बार न भूलते हों।

For our second phrase let's imagine a situation

दूसरे वाक्य के लिये, चलिये मानते हैं कि

where you are sitting at a restaurant

आप एक रेस्तराँ में अपने दोस्त का इंतज़ार करने के लिये

waiting for a friend of yours to meet you.

बैठे हुए हैं।

Maybe you have planned to have lunch together at one o'clock

मान लीजिये आप दोनों ने एक बजे खाना खाने का प्लान बनाया हुआ है।

घड़ी टिक-टिक चलती जा रही है पर आपका दोस्त अभी तक नहीं आया।

and the clock is ticking and your friend is late.

When your friend shows up they might say

जब आपके दोस्त आते हैं, वो शायद आपसे कहेंगे

"I'm sorry I'm late I had a few things

"I'm sorry I'm late I had a few things to take care of at work

to take care of at work

and it was hard for me to get here on time."

and it was hard for me get here on time."

आप अपना जवाब इस तरह दे सकते हैं, "Hey, it happens!"

You could respond by saying, "Hey, it happens!"

That is a great way to make your friend feel at ease.

इससे आपके दोस्त को थोड़ी तसल्ली मिल जाएगी।

I'm assuming you're not upset that they're late

उम्मीद है आप उनके देर से आने से नाराज़ नहीं होंगे

if you respond that way.

अगर आप इस तरह से जवाब दें तो।

And I would say that is just a great way

मुझे लगता है इस तरह से उनकी माफ़ी क़ुबूल करना

to accept their apology for being late.

सही रहेगा।

For our third way to respond to an apology,

तीसरे वाक्य के लिये

let's imagine that your car is in the garage being repaired

चलिये मान लेते हैं कि आपकी गाड़ी की गैराज में मरम्मत हो रही है

and the mechanic told you

और मिस्त्री आपसे कहता है कि

that they would have your car done by four o'clock.

वो आपकी गाड़ी चार बजे तक सुधार देगा।

Maybe your mechanic phones you and says,

लेकिन फिर मिस्त्री आपको फ़ोन करता है और कहता है,

"We're sorry your car isn't going to be done until five."

"We're sorry your car isn't going to be done until five."

A great way to respond would be to say,

जवाब के तौर पर ये कहना सही रहेगा,

"That's no problem!" or "That's not a problem!"

"That's no problem!" या "That's not a problem!"

Because hopefully you can wait

क्यूँकि मुझे उम्मीद है कि आप अपनी गाड़ी की मरम्मत के लिये

just one more hour to have your car repaired.

एक घंटा और इंतज़ार करेंगे।

For our fourth phrase let's imagine a situation

चौथे वाक्य के लिये चलिये मानते हैं कि

where a friend of yours has borrowed your car

आपका कोई दोस्त आपकी गाड़ी लिये हुए है

and when they return your car they say, "Hey,

और वापस करते वक़्त जब वो कहें, "Hey,

thank you so much for letting me borrow your car,

thank you so much for letting me borrow your car,

but I'm sorry I forgot to put a little bit

but I'm sorry I forgot to put a little bit

of gas in the gas tank."

of gas in the gas tank."

You would just say to them, "It's cool!"

आप उनसे कह सकते हैं, "It's cool!"

Hopefully that's what you would say to your friend.

मुझे उम्मीद आप अपने दोस्त से यही कहेंगे।

Usually when you borrow someone's car

जब आप किसी की गाड़ी उधार लें

it is nice to put a little bit of gas in the tank.

तो थोड़ा-बहुत पैट्रोल डलवा देना चाहिये।

But if your friend was genuinely sorry

लेकिन अगर आपके दोस्त को वाक़ई में बुरा लग रहा है

and said, "I'm sorry I forgot to put

और वो कहें, "I'm sorry I forgot to put a little bit of gas in the tank."

a little bit of gas in the tank."

It would be very nice of you to just say, "Hey, it's cool!"

और आप कहें "Hey, it's cool!" तो ये काफ़ी अच्छा रहेगा।

For our fifth phrase let's imagine a situation

पाँचवे वाक्य के लिये चलिये मानते हैं कि

where you lent your phone to a friend

आप अपने दोस्त को आपना फ़ोन देते हैं

and while they were using it they dropped it

और फ़ोन चलाते वक़्त वो उसे ज़मीन पर गिरा देते हैं

on the ground and broke it.

जिससे वो टूट जाता है।

If it was an old phone

अगर वो एक पुराना फ़ोन था

and if you were planning to buy a new phone anyways,

और अगर आप वैसे भी उसे बदलने ही वाले थे,

when your friend says, "I'm so sorry I dropped your phone

तो जब आपके दोस्त कहें, "I'm so sorry I dropped your phone

on the ground and broke it!"

on the ground and broke it!"

You could respond by saying, "Don't worry about it

आप जवाब के तौर पर कह सकते हैं, "Don't worry about it

I was going to buy a new one next week anyways."

I was going to buy a new one next week anyways."

Or there's a shorter form of don't worry about it

"Don't worry about it" का एक छोटा रूप भी है

which is, "No worries!"

जो कि है, "No worries!"

We often in English in an informal way

जब कोई माफ़ी माँगता है

will respond to someone who apologizes by saying,

तब हम अक्सर अंग्रेज़ी में ऐसे जवाब देते हैं,

"Ah, no worries, I was going to buy

"Ah, no worries, I was going to buy

a new one next week anyways."

a new one next week anyways."

I'm not sure what you would say though if your phone

लेकिन अगर आपका फ़ोन नया हो और आपका दोस्त

was brand new and your friend dropped it on the ground.

उसे ज़मीन पर गिर दे, तब आप क्या कहेंगे?

But I'll let you think about that one.

मैं इसके बारे में आपको ही सोचने देता हूँ।

For our sixth phrase imagine you're at a busy subway station

छठे वाक्य के लिये चलिये मान लेते हैं कि आप एक भीड़-भाड़ वाले सबवे स्टेशन पर हैं

and someone bumps into you and they say,

और कोई आपसे टकरा जाता है

of course, "I'm sorry!"

और वो कहें, "I'm sorry!"

a great response would be to say, "It's all good."

तो आपको कहना चाहिये, "It's all good."

When someone bumps into you and you don't get hurt

जब आपसे कोई टकरा जाए और आपको कोई चोट न लगे

and they say that they are sorry,

पर वो फिर भी कहें कि वो माफ़ी चाहते हैं

when you say it's all good,

तब आपके "It's all good" कहने का मतलब है

what you're saying is that it's okay,

कि कोई बात नहीं।

I wasn't hurt, it was just a soft bump, everything is okay.

मुझे चोट नहीं लगी। बस थोड़ा-सा धक्का लगा था। सब कुछ ठीक है।

So a great way to respond is to say, "It's all good."

"It's all good" एक बढ़िया जवाब रहेगा।

So the last two phrases I'm going

आख़िरी दो वाक्यों के बारे में मैं आपको

to look at at the same time.

एक साथ बताऊँगा।

And those phrases are, "I forgive you."

और वो वाक्य हैं, "I forgive you."

or "I accept your apology."

या "I accept your apology."

Both of these you would use in a more serious situation

इन दोनों का इस्तेमाल आपको किसी गंभीर हालत में करना चाहिये

when someone is apologizing

जब कोई किसी बुरे काम के लिये

for something very, very serious.

माफ़ी माँग रहा हो।

A good example would be maybe a brother or sister of yours

मिसाल के तौर पर अगर आपके भाई या आपकी बहन

was really mean to you when you were a kid,

आपसे बचपन में अच्छा बर्ताव नहीं करते थे/करती थीं

and later in life as an adult

और जब वो बड़े हुए और उन्हें अपनी ग़लती का अहसास हुआ,

they might come and apologize to you.

तो वो शायद आपसे माफ़ी माँगें।

They might come and say, "I just want to apologize

वो शायद कहें, "I just want to apologize

for being so mean to you when we were kids."

for being so mean to you when we were kids."

This would be a more serious apology

ये थोड़ी गंभीरतापूर्वक माफ़ी है

and therefore it merits or it deserves

तो इसके लिये

a more serious response.

थोड़े और गंभीर जवाब की ज़रूरत है।

So you would respond to that by saying,

आप इसका जवाब इस तरह से दे सकते हैं,

"I accept your apology" or "I forgive you."

"I accept your apology" या "I forgive you."

Those would be two really good answers

कोई इस तरह से माफ़ी माँगे तो

for that type of apology.

ये जवाब सही रहेंगे।

Well hey that was just a few ways to respond in English

तो मैंने आपको बताया कि अंग्रेज़ी में कैसे जवाब दें

if someone was to apologize to you for something.

जब कोई आपसे माफ़ी माँगे।
