Misplaced Modifiers - English Grammar with Jennifer

I think we all make mistakes when we're  tired. One morning, I had my breakfast,

and then I put the box of cereal in the fridge and  the cold milk in a cabinet. Luckily, I realized my

mistake and I fixed it. Mistakes can happen when  you're tired, when you're simply not careful,

and when you're not aware of a certain way things  should be done. A misplaced modifier results

when we put a word, a phrase, or even a  clause in the wrong place -- an awkward place.

Misplacing even a single word can  sometimes create a weird situation,  

يمكن أن يؤدي وضع كلمة واحدة في غير موضعها في بعض الأحيان إلى خلق موقف غريب ،

kind of like the mistake I made with the  cereal and the milk. But fortunately for me,

no one was around to see my silly mistake. With  a misplaced modifier, the mistake can create

confusion for other people. Misplaced  modifiers can cause misunderstanding.

In this lesson, let's practice identifying  and fixing misplaced modifiers.

Imagine an older woman looking at a baby photo.  

تخيل امرأة أكبر سنا تنظر إلى صورة طفل.

Looking at the baby without her glasses,  the woman didn't recognize her grandchild.

بالنظر إلى الطفل دون نظارته ، لم تتعرف المرأة على حفيدها.

Does that sound weird...odd even  just a little? It does to me.  

هل هذا يبدو غريبا ... غريب حتى قليلا؟ إنه يفعل لي.

Who should be wearing the  glasses, the woman or the baby?

من يجب أن يرتدي النظارات ، المرأة أم الطفل؟

A general guideline is to place a modifier next  to the word it's modifying. It would be better to  

المبدأ التوجيهي العام هو وضع مُعدِّل بجوار الكلمة التي يتم تعديلها. من الأفضل أن

say, "Without her glasses, the woman looked at  the baby and didn't recognize her grandchild."

تقول ، "بدون نظارتها ، نظرت المرأة إلى الطفل ولم تتعرف على حفيدها."

Or possibly: Looking at the baby,  

أو ربما: عند النظر إلى الطفل ،

the woman didn't recognize her grandchild  because she wasn't wearing her glasses.

لم تتعرف المرأة على حفيدها لأنها لم تكن ترتدي نظارتها.

Or to be very clear, we could  say, "The woman wasn't wearing  

أو لنكون واضحين للغاية ، يمكننا أن نقول ، "لم تكن المرأة ترتدي

her glasses when she looked at the baby,  so she didn't recognize her grandchild."

نظارتها عندما نظرت إلى الطفل ، لذلك لم تتعرف على حفيدها."

Consider this example. The first class was over,  

تأمل هذا المثال. انتهى الفصل الأول ،

and the second would start soon. The teacher  cleaned up the mess the children had made quickly.

وسيبدأ الفصل الثاني قريبًا. نظف المعلم الفوضى التي أحدثها الأطفال بسرعة.

Look for an adverb of manner. Do you see it?

ابحث عن ظرف من الأسلوب. هل تراه؟

Quickly. What happened quickly?  Cleaning up or making the mess?

بسرعة. ماذا حدث بسرعة؟ التنظيف أم إحداث الفوضى؟ سيكون من

It would be more logical to say, "The first  class was over, and the second would start  

المنطقي أكثر أن نقول ، " انتهى الفصل الأول ، وسيبدأ الفصل الثاني

soon. The art teacher quickly cleaned  up the mess the children had made."

قريبًا. قام مدرس الفن بتنظيف الفوضى التي أحدثها الأطفال بسرعة."

So, whether it's a single-word  adverb or a prepositional phrase  

لذا ، سواء كان ظرفًا من كلمة واحدة أو عبارة جر

functioning like an adverb, be sure to  place it next to the word you're modifying.

تعمل مثل الظرف ، تأكد من وضعها بجوار الكلمة التي تعدلها.

Spot the misplaced modifier. They told me  in the evening I would have better luck.

اكتشف المُعدِّل في غير محله. قالوا لي في المساء أن حظي أفضل.

Is the meaning completely clear?

هل المعنى واضح تماما؟

I think it could be understood two  different ways. Which way is more logical?

أعتقد أنه يمكن فهمه بطريقتين مختلفتين. أي طريقة أكثر منطقية؟

Perhaps with more context this would make sense.  

ربما مع المزيد من السياق ، سيكون هذا منطقيًا.

Maybe this is the situation: I went to  a phone store, and it was really busy. A  

ربما كان هذا هو الموقف: ذهبت إلى متجر للهواتف ، وكان مشغولًا حقًا.

sales rep suggested that I return later in the  evening because there would be fewer customers.

So, "in the evening" is not about when they told  me, but more about when I should return. It would

be more logical, it would be clearer to say, "They  told me I would have better luck in the evening."

Okay. Let's consider the placement of adjectives.

Every morning, I check my  important list of reminders.

Maybe the sentence makes sense already. It's not  totally confusing, but it could be more accurate.  

ربما الجملة منطقية بالفعل. إنه ليس محيرًا تمامًا ، لكنه قد يكون أكثر دقة.

What is really important, the list or the  reminders? The reminders have importance. I think  

ما هو المهم حقًا القائمة أم التذكيرات؟ التذكيرات لها أهمية. أعتقد

it would be more logical to say, "Every morning,  I check my list of important reminders." Get it?

أنه سيكون من المنطقي أكثر أن تقول ، "كل صباح ، أتحقق من قائمة التذكيرات المهمة الخاصة بي." احصل عليه؟

Here's a similar sentence. Every morning,  I give my dog a nutritious bowl of food.

هذه جملة مماثلة. كل صباح ، أعطي لكلبي وعاءًا مغذيًا من الطعام.

Where is the misplaced modifier?

أين المعدّل في غير محله؟

What exactly is nutritious, the bowl -- the  metal bowl -- or what is inside the bowl?

ما هو المغذي بالضبط ، الوعاء - الوعاء المعدني - أو ما هو داخل الوعاء؟

Wouldn't it be more logical to say, "Every  morning, I give my dog a bowl of nutritious food"?

ألن يكون من المنطقي أكثر أن تقول ، "كل صباح ، أعطي لكلبي طبقًا من الطعام المغذي"؟

Okay. Time for a practice task. Fix the  misplaced modifiers. It could be an adjective  

تمام. حان الوقت لمهمة الممارسة. أصلح المُعدِلات في غير محلها. يمكن أن تكون صفة

or an adverb or a prepositional phrase  functioning like an adjective or an adverb.

أو ظرفًا أو عبارة جر تعمل مثل الصفة أو الظرف. ج:

A. My brother has a new and old  collection of movie posters.

لدى أخي مجموعة جديدة وقديمة من ملصقات الأفلام.

Hint: What's new and old?

تلميح: ما الجديد والقديم؟

Move the modifier next to the word it's modifying.  

انقل المُعدِّل بجوار الكلمة التي يتم تعديلها.

Answer: My brother has a collection  of new and old movie posters.

الجواب: لدى أخي مجموعة من ملصقات الأفلام الجديدة والقديمة.

B. Our teacher explained in 1803 the U.S.  acquired the territory of Louisiana from France.

أوضح معلمنا في عام 1803 أن الولايات المتحدة حصلت على أراضي لويزيانا من فرنسا.

Hint: What happened in 1803?

تلميح: ماذا حدث عام 1803؟

Put the prepositional phrase of  time in the most logical position.

ضع عبارة الجر للوقت في الموضع الأكثر منطقية.

Answer: Our teacher explained that the U.S.  

الجواب: أوضح معلمنا أن الولايات المتحدة

acquired the territory of  Louisiana from France in 1803.

استحوذت على إقليم لويزيانا من فرنسا عام 1803.

C. The sales lady showed  me a denim woman's jacket.

ج. أرتني سيدة المبيعات سترة نسائية من الدنيم.

Hint: What is made of denim?

تلميح: ما هو مصنوع من الدنيم؟

Well, certainly not the woman. Answer: The  sales lady showed me a woman's denim jacket.

حسنًا ، بالتأكيد ليست المرأة. الجواب: أرتني سيدة المبيعات سترة نسائية من الدنيم.

D. The winner was announced after the  students were seated by the school director.

تم الإعلان عن الفائز بعد جلوس الطلاب من قبل مدير المدرسة.

Hint: What did the school director do?

تلميح: ماذا فعل مدير المدرسة؟

Answer: The winner was announced by the school  director after the students were seated.

الإجابة: تم إعلان الفائز من قبل مدير المدرسة بعد جلوس الطلاب.

E. The mother in her high  chair fed the little baby.

E. الأم في كرسيها العالي تغذي الطفل الصغير.

Hint: Who was in the high chair?

تلميح: من كان على الكرسي المرتفع؟

Answer: The mother fed the  little baby in her high chair.

الجواب: أطعمت الأم الطفل الصغير على كرسيها المرتفع.

Let's look at confusing uses of adjective  clauses and reduced adjective clauses. I  

لنلقِ نظرة على الاستخدامات المربكة لجمل الصفة وجمل الصفة المختصرة.

have a whole playlist on adjective clauses, and  I go over clauses with the relative pronouns

who, which, and that. I also go over the  relative adverbs where, when, and why.

Remember that adjective clauses  (relative clauses), reduced or not,  

تذكر أن جمل الصفة (الجمل النسبية) ، مختصرة أم لا ،

follow the head noun -- the noun they modify.  Here are some correct examples to look at first.

تتبع اسم الرأس - الاسم الذي تعدله. فيما يلي بعض الأمثلة الصحيحة للنظر فيها أولاً.

YouTube is a popular platform that  allows me to teach through video.

YouTube هو نظام أساسي شهير يسمح لي بالتدريس من خلال الفيديو.

A Super Member is a Patreon Member who  gets access to all my live group events.

العضو المتميز هو عضو في Patreon يمكنه الوصول إلى جميع أحداث مجموعتي الحية.

Do you see the adjective clauses?

هل ترى الجمل الصفة؟

Do you see the head nouns that they follow?

هل ترى أسماء الرأس التي يتبعونها؟

Okay. Now try to spot the mistakes in  these sentences with adjective clauses.

تمام. حاول الآن اكتشاف الأخطاء في هذه الجمل بعبارات صفة.

We need to make the wording clear.  Let's fix the word order. First,  

نحن بحاجة إلى توضيح الصياغة. دعونا نصلح ترتيب الكلمات. أولاً ،

find the adjective clause or the  adjective phrase in each sentence.

ابحث عن جملة الصفة أو عبارة الصفة في كل جملة.

Now find each head noun.

الآن ابحث عن كل اسم رئيسي.

Do you see how the word order needs to change?

هل ترى كيف يجب تغيير ترتيب الكلمات؟

The cake that I bought from my  daughter's birthday is in the fridge.

الكعكة التي اشتريتها من عيد ميلاد ابنتي موجودة في الثلاجة.

At the bakery, she chose a round  cake that had flowers on top.

في المخبز ، اختارت كعكة مستديرة عليها أزهار.

The guests put the gifts wrapped  in pretty paper on the table.

وضع الضيوف الهدايا ملفوفة بورق جميل على الطاولة. خلقت

The many colorful balloons floating  near the ceiling created a festive mood.

العديد من البالونات الملونة التي تطفو بالقرب من السقف مزاجًا احتفاليًا.

Okay. Ready for another practice task? Make the  sentences clearer. Fix those misplaced modifiers.

تمام. جاهز لمهمة تدريب أخرى؟ اجعل الجمل أوضح. إصلاح تلك المعدلات في غير محلها. كان

The aquarium, filled with salt water, had  Clownfish and several other marine fish.

الحوض المليء بالمياه المالحة يحتوي على Clownfish والعديد من الأسماك البحرية الأخرى. لقد

We admired the ballerinas dancing on stage.

أعجبنا رقص الباليه على المسرح.

The birds circling up in the sky must  have had a wingspan larger than my arm.

يجب أن يكون جناحي الطيور التي تدور في السماء أكبر من ذراعي.

The flight attendant gave a blanket to the  passenger who had complained about the cold air.

أعطت المضيفة بطانية للراكب الذي اشتكى من الهواء البارد.

My neighbor recommended a massage  therapist, a woman trained in reflexology.

نصح جارتي معالج تدليك ، وهي امرأة تدربت على علم المنعكسات.

This last group of commonly misplaced modifiers  are adverbs that focus on another word or restrict  

هذه المجموعة الأخيرة من المُعدِّلات التي يتم وضعها في غير محلها بشكل شائع عبارة عن ظروف تركز على كلمة أخرى أو تقيد

the meaning of another word. Be careful with the  adverbs "only" and "just." Place them before the  

معنى كلمة أخرى. كن حذرا مع الاحوال "فقط" و "عادل". ضعهم قبل

word they modify. I'm sorry I wanted to help  only you. I didn't mean to make things worse.

الكلمة التي قاموا بتعديلها. أنا آسف لأنني أردت مساعدتك فقط. لم أقصد جعل الأمور أسوأ.

Hint: Was I trying to help just one person  or was I trying to do just one thing?

Move "only" to another position.

تحرك "فقط" إلى موضع آخر.

Here's the correction. I'm sorry. I only wanted  to help you. I didn't mean to make things worse.

Unclear wording can also happen with adverbs like  

يمكن أن تحدث الصياغة غير الواضحة أيضًا مع ظروف مثل

"almost" and "nearly" or adverbs  of frequency like "rarely."

"تقريبًا" و "تقريبًا" أو الظروف المتكررة مثل "نادرًا".

We failed to make the deadline nearly  because the internet connection was slow.

فشلنا في تحديد الموعد النهائي تقريبًا لأن الاتصال بالإنترنت كان بطيئًا.

Hint: What almost happened, us failing to  make the deadline or the internet being slow?

تلميح: ما الذي كاد أن يحدث ، فشلنا في تحديد الموعد النهائي أو بطء الإنترنت؟

Correction: We nearly failed to make the deadline  because the internet connection was slow.

تصحيح: لقد فشلنا تقريبًا في تحديد الموعد النهائي لأن الاتصال بالإنترنت كان بطيئًا.

Here's the final practice task. Be sure to  place the adverbs in the most logical position.  

ها هي مهمة التدريب النهائية. تأكد من وضع الظروف في أكثر موضع منطقي.

A. Use "just" to emphasize that the  announcement took place only minutes ago.

ج: استخدم "فقط" للتأكيد على أن الإعلان تم قبل دقائق فقط.

The administration has just announced  that our budget will increase next year.

أعلنت الإدارة للتو أن ميزانيتنا ستزيد العام المقبل.

B. Use "almost" to limit the  number of jobs that have dangers.

ب. استخدم كلمة "تقريبًا" للحد من عدد الوظائف التي تنطوي على مخاطر.

There are certain dangers in almost every job.

هناك مخاطر معينة في كل وظيفة تقريبًا.

C. Use "rarely" to explain that  riding your bike is convenient.

ج- استخدم عبارة "نادرًا" لتوضيح أن ركوب دراجتك أمر مريح.

I'm rarely late when I ride my bike to work.

نادرًا ما أتأخر عندما أركب دراجتي إلى العمل.
