Shadowing Exercise To Improve English Fluency (Free Worksheet Included)

Are you ready to work on your English  listening, speaking, and comprehension?  

Awesome. In this lesson, there are going to  be three steps. First, I'm going to play you  

a clip. Then I will help you to understand  a certain phrase or word within that clip,  

and then I'll give you the opportunity to shadow.  So if you want to download the free worksheet

Now today our resource will be episode  63 of the English Like a Native podcast,

It's a very useful tool. This is a huge  step forward in the land of technology.  

And it's going to make a huge difference to  the way we all live our lives. It already  

is having an impact on many people and many  businesses and workflows and things like that.

Workflow. Workflow is a noun that refers to  the sequence in which work or tasks progress.  

For example, I offer a pronunciation assessment  service, and there is a sequence, a number of  

stages that a student's work has to go through  before the assessment feedback can be given back  

to the students. And as with all things, there are  always ways that you can improve the effectiveness  

and the efficiency of a process. And so businesses  are always looking for ways to improve workflow.

Okay, now it's time for you to shadow.  So the same clip will be played four

I initially was a little bit  nervous about the technology,  

to be honest. I wondered if  it would make me redundant.

many of us cast aside the instructions and  dive straight in playing around with the  

gadget until we get stuck and then we have  to look at the manual. Okay, let's shadow.

But the thing that's always stopped me is  the fact that every single time I use it,  

I find mistakes. Yes, this very smart, fast  thinking, fast writing, creative piece of software  

is flawed. And there are ways to better  prompt ChatGPT to get better results,  

you have to train it to do what you want it to do.

Flawed, flawed means imperfect. You can  describe a picnic plan as being flawed.  

If you don't think about the fact that  there have been severe weather warnings,  

that would be a flawed picnic plan, wouldn't  it? Or you could describe a person as being  

flawed if they have undesirable  personality traits. For example,  

I'm flawed because I often lack the discipline to  stick to my healthy lifestyle habits around sleep.

I always intend to go to bed early, but I just  have to watch a little bit more of my TV program  

or I, I just want to spend a little bit more  time relaxing in the evening, but not sleeping.

it. For example, if you were planning to throw  a dinner party for your friends and some of your  

friends had dietary requirements, then you will  have to take those requirements into account.

you are deciding what to cook. So if I'm making a  dessert and I normally make it with peanut butter,  

I may actually need to take into account the  fact that my friend has a severe nut allergy,  

in which case I would not even  open the jar of nutty butter.

Always a double check things  especially if you have doubts.

Word association is a really fun  game. It always makes me think  

of this old children's Saturday morning program  

and it was like a, a mishmash of sketches  and different things going on in the host.

Mishmash. Mishmash. This means a confusing  mixture of things. So this makes me think of  

my cooking sometimes. I have no plans for dinner  and I have some random ingredients in the kitchen,  

so I put together a mixed. A mixture of things,  a mishmash of things to create some form of meal,  

probably the kind of thing that  no one would ever dream of eating,  

but food is food. Food is  fuel, even if it's a mishmash.

about Charlie Chaplin. Think about someone  falling over on a banana skin or getting a  

pie in the face that is slapstick. These  very physical jokes. That make us laugh,

me up on being unkind and rude in the way  that I spoke to him. In this example as well,  

we have the word deviation. Or deviations.  A deviation is a change from the set plan  

or to go off in a different direction  to what is expected or what is usual.

So to do something different  to the norm or the expectation,  

it's like going off track. If we  have been driving down the road,  

we've planned a route to get to our destination,  and then suddenly I pull off the road and I  

start to go off in a different direction. You  say, Anna, why did you, why did you deviate?

Or if we make a plan to throw us a surprise  party and do everything in a certain way,  

but I change everything at the  last minute, you'd say, Anna,  

why did you deviate from  the plan? What's going on?

But do not expect ChatGPT to pick you up on  your deviations. Do not expect ChatGPT to pick
