Present Perfect: Active & Passive | Participle Adjectives | Advanced English Grammar

The fact that the Past Participle is used in Perfect tenses, the Passive Voice,

Geçmiş Ortacı Mükemmel zamanlarda, Edilgen Seste

and also sometimes as an adjective can be very confusing.

ve ayrıca bazen bir sıfat olarak kullanılması çok kafa karıştırıcı olabilir.

So, in this lesson we're going to review these three uses of the Past Participle form.

So, let's start by looking at the active to passive formulation.

Remember that a key point is that we must respect the tense.

Önemli bir noktanın, kipe saygı duymamız gerektiğini unutmayın.

For example, if the active sentence is: Someone opens the window every day (Present Simple).

Örneğin, etkin cümle şuysa: Birisi pencereyi her gün açar (Şimdiki Zaman).

The passive is: The window is opened every day.

Pasif: Pencere her gün açılır.

Present Simple for the verb 'to be'.

Şimdiki Zaman 'olmak' fiili için.

So, now let's change the tense of the active sentence to Present Perfect.

Şimdi etkin cümlenin zamanını Present Perfect olarak değiştirelim.

So, someone has opened the window.

Birisi pencereyi açmıştır.

What's the passive form?

Pasif form nedir?

The passive form is: The window has been opened.

Pasif form şudur: Pencere açılmıştır.

The verb 'to be' is now in the Present Perfect tense, 'has been'.

"Olmak" fiili artık Şimdiki Mükemmel zamanda, "olmuştur".

Right! An action has taken place. What's the result of this action?

Sağ! Bir işlem gerçekleştirildi. Bu işlemin sonucu nedir?

The result is that the window is now open. 'Open' is an ordinary adjective.

Sonuç, pencerenin artık açık olmasıdır. "Açık" sıradan bir sıfattır.

Right! Let's look at another example.

Sağ! Başka bir örneğe bakalım.

The active sentence is: I have booked our seats. What's the passive sentence?

Aktif cümle şu şekildedir: Koltuklarımızı ayırttım. Pasif cümle nedir?

The passive sentence is: Our seats have been booked.

Edilgen cümle şudur: Koltuklarımız rezerve edildi.

And what's the result?

Ve sonuç ne?

The result is that our seats are booked.

Sonuç olarak koltuklarımız rezerve edilmiştir.

'Booked' is also an adjective. It describes what has happened to the seats.

"Ayrıldı" aynı zamanda bir sıfattır. Koltuklara ne olduğunu açıklar.

But, it's not an ordinary adjective, it's a participle adjective.

Ancak bu sıradan bir sıfat değil, bir sıfat sıfatıdır.

Right! Let's look at another example.

Sağ! Başka bir örneğe bakalım.

The active sentence is: She has completed all the tasks. What's the passive sentence?

Aktif cümle şudur: Tüm görevleri tamamladı. Pasif cümle nedir?

The passive form is: All the tasks have been completed.

Pasif form şudur: Tüm görevler tamamlandı.

So, what's the result?

Peki sonuç ne?

The result is that all the tasks are complete or completed.

Sonuç olarak, tüm görevler tamamlanır veya tamamlanır.

In this situation, you have a choice of the ordinary adjective 'complete', or the participle adjective 'completed'.

Bu durumda, sıradan "tamamlandı" sıfatı veya "tamamlandı" sıfat sıfatı arasından seçim yapabilirsiniz.

If you use the ordinary adjective 'complete', you're only describing the noun.

Sıradan "tamamlandı" sıfatını kullanırsanız, yalnızca ismi tarif etmiş olursunuz.

If you use the participle adjective 'completed',  you're showing that an action was carried out on the noun.

Right! Let's finish with two more examples to clarify the three uses of the past participle.

Sağ! Geçmiş ortacın üç kullanımına açıklık getirmek için iki örnekle bitirelim.

Look at the first context.

İlk bağlama bakın.

Something like: I empty the bin daily.

Şunun gibi bir şey: Çöp kutusunu her gün boşaltırım.

So, when someone asks you: Have you emptied the bin today? They're using 'empty' in the Present Perfect tense active.

Yani biri size "Bugün çöpü boşalttınız mı?" diye sorduğunda? Present Perfect tense'de "boş"u aktif olarak kullanıyorlar.

You can answer: Yes, it has been emptied.

Cevap verebilirsiniz: Evet, boşaltıldı.

You're using 'emptied' in the passive voice of the same tense, Present Perfect.

"Boşaltılmış" ifadesini aynı zamanın pasif ses tonuyla kullanıyorsunuz , Present Perfect.

Or, you can just describe the state of the bin: It's emptied.

Ya da sadece çöp kutusunun durumunu açıklayabilirsiniz: Boşalmış.

You're using the Past Participle as an adjective here. A participle adjective.

Burada sıfat olarak Geçmiş Ortacı kullanıyorsunuz. Katılımcı bir sıfat.

But, because the ordinary adjective 'empty'  also exists, you can say: It is empty.

Ancak, sıradan "boş" sıfatı da mevcut olduğu için, boş diyebilirsiniz.

Right! Let's look at one final context to make this perfectly clear.

Sağ! Bunu tamamen netleştirmek için son bir bağlama bakalım.

Let's say that you do the shopping every week.

Diyelim ki alışverişi her hafta yapıyorsunuz.

So, when someone asks you: Have you done the shopping this week?

They're using 'done', the past participle, in the Present Perfect tense in the active form.

geçmiş ortacı olan "bitti"yi kullanıyorlar .

If you answer: Yes, it has been done. You're using 'done', the past participle, in the passive form of the Present Perfect tense.

Cevap verirseniz: Evet, yapıldı. Geçmiş katılımcı olan "bitti"yi Present Perfect tense'in edilgen biçiminde kullanıyorsunuz.

Or, you can simply say: It is done.

Ya da basitçe şöyle diyebilirsiniz: Bitti.

Now, you're using 'done', the past participle, as a participle adjective.

Şimdi, geçmiş katılımcı olan "bitti"yi katılımcı sıfatı olarak kullanıyorsunuz.

And in this case, there is no ordinary adjective to describe the result.

Ve bu durumda, sonucu tanımlayacak sıradan bir sıfat yoktur.
