Present Perfect: Active & Passive | Participle Adjectives | Advanced English Grammar

The fact that the Past Participle is used in Perfect tenses, the Passive Voice,

O fato de o particípio passado ser usado em tempos perfeitos, na voz passiva

and also sometimes as an adjective can be very confusing.

e também às vezes como adjetivo pode ser muito confuso.

So, in this lesson we're going to review these three uses of the Past Participle form.

Portanto, nesta lição, revisaremos esses três usos da forma do particípio passado.

So, let's start by looking at the active to passive formulation.

Então, vamos começar examinando a formulação ativa para passiva.

Remember that a key point is that we must respect the tense.

Lembre-se de que um ponto-chave é que devemos respeitar o tempo verbal.

For example, if the active sentence is: Someone opens the window every day (Present Simple).

Por exemplo, se a frase ativa for: Alguém abre a janela todos os dias (Presente Simples).

The passive is: The window is opened every day.

A passiva é: A janela é aberta todos os dias.

Present Simple for the verb 'to be'.

Present Simple para o verbo 'to be'.

So, now let's change the tense of the active sentence to Present Perfect.

Então, agora vamos mudar o tempo da frase ativa para Present Perfect.

So, someone has opened the window.

Então, alguém abriu a janela.

What's the passive form?

Qual é a forma passiva?

The passive form is: The window has been opened.

A forma passiva é: A janela foi aberta.

The verb 'to be' is now in the Present Perfect tense, 'has been'.

O verbo 'ser' agora está no presente perfeito, 'tem sido'.

Right! An action has taken place. What's the result of this action?

Certo! Uma ação ocorreu. Qual é o resultado dessa ação?

The result is that the window is now open. 'Open' is an ordinary adjective.

O resultado é que a janela agora está aberta. 'Aberto' é um adjetivo comum.

Right! Let's look at another example.

Certo! Vejamos outro exemplo.

The active sentence is: I have booked our seats. What's the passive sentence?

A frase ativa é: reservamos nossos assentos. Qual é a frase passiva?

The passive sentence is: Our seats have been booked.

A frase passiva é: Nossos assentos foram reservados.

And what's the result?

E qual é o resultado?

The result is that our seats are booked.

O resultado é que nossos assentos estão reservados.

'Booked' is also an adjective. It describes what has happened to the seats.

'Reservado' também é um adjetivo. Ele descreve o que aconteceu com os assentos.

But, it's not an ordinary adjective, it's a participle adjective.

Mas não é um adjetivo comum, é um adjetivo particípio.

Right! Let's look at another example.

Certo! Vejamos outro exemplo.

The active sentence is: She has completed all the tasks. What's the passive sentence?

A frase ativa é: Ela completou todas as tarefas. Qual é a frase passiva?

The passive form is: All the tasks have been completed.

A forma passiva é: Todas as tarefas foram concluídas.

So, what's the result?

Então, qual é o resultado?

The result is that all the tasks are complete or completed.

O resultado é que todas as tarefas foram concluídas ou concluídas.

In this situation, you have a choice of the ordinary adjective 'complete', or the participle adjective 'completed'.

Nessa situação, você pode escolher o adjetivo comum 'completo' ou o adjetivo particípio 'concluído'.

If you use the ordinary adjective 'complete', you're only describing the noun.

Se você usar o adjetivo comum 'completo' , estará apenas descrevendo o substantivo.

If you use the participle adjective 'completed',  you're showing that an action was carried out on the noun.

Se você usar o adjetivo particípio 'concluído' , está mostrando que uma ação foi realizada no substantivo.

Right! Let's finish with two more examples to clarify the three uses of the past participle.

Certo! Vamos terminar com mais dois exemplos para esclarecer os três usos do particípio passado.

Look at the first context.

Observe o primeiro contexto.

Something like: I empty the bin daily.

Algo como: Esvazio a lixeira diariamente.

So, when someone asks you: Have you emptied the bin today? They're using 'empty' in the Present Perfect tense active.

Então, quando alguém te perguntar: você já esvaziou a lixeira hoje? Eles estão usando 'vazio' no presente perfeito.

You can answer: Yes, it has been emptied.

Você pode responder: Sim, foi esvaziado.

You're using 'emptied' in the passive voice of the same tense, Present Perfect.

Você está usando 'esvaziado' na voz passiva do mesmo tempo, Present Perfect.

Or, you can just describe the state of the bin: It's emptied.

Ou você pode apenas descrever o estado da lixeira: Está vazia.

You're using the Past Participle as an adjective here. A participle adjective.

Você está usando o particípio passado como um adjetivo aqui. Um adjetivo particípio.

But, because the ordinary adjective 'empty'  also exists, you can say: It is empty.

Mas, como também existe o adjetivo comum 'vazio' , você pode dizer: está vazio.

Right! Let's look at one final context to make this perfectly clear.

Certo! Vejamos um contexto final para deixar isso perfeitamente claro.

Let's say that you do the shopping every week.

Digamos que você faça as compras toda semana.

So, when someone asks you: Have you done the shopping this week?

Então, quando alguém te perguntar : você já fez as compras esta semana?

They're using 'done', the past participle, in the Present Perfect tense in the active form.

Eles estão usando 'done', o particípio passado, no presente perfeito na forma ativa.

If you answer: Yes, it has been done. You're using 'done', the past participle, in the passive form of the Present Perfect tense.

Se você responder: Sim, já foi feito. Você está usando 'done', o particípio passado, na forma passiva do presente perfeito.

Or, you can simply say: It is done.

Ou, você pode simplesmente dizer: Está feito.

Now, you're using 'done', the past participle, as a participle adjective.

Agora, você está usando 'done', o particípio passado, como um adjetivo particípio.

And in this case, there is no ordinary adjective to describe the result.

E, neste caso, não há adjetivo comum para descrever o resultado.

Right! That's the end of  this lesson.
