Present Perfect: Active & Passive | Participle Adjectives | Advanced English Grammar

The fact that the Past Participle is used in Perfect tenses, the Passive Voice,

El hecho de que el Participio Pasado se use en Tiempos Perfectos, la Voz Pasiva

and also sometimes as an adjective can be very confusing.

y también a veces como adjetivo puede ser muy confuso.

So, in this lesson we're going to review these three uses of the Past Participle form.

Entonces, en esta lección vamos a revisar estos tres usos de la forma del Participio Pasado.

So, let's start by looking at the active to passive formulation.

Entonces, comencemos mirando la formulación activa a pasiva.

Remember that a key point is that we must respect the tense.

Recuerda que un punto clave es que debemos respetar el tiempo.

For example, if the active sentence is: Someone opens the window every day (Present Simple).

Por ejemplo, si la oración activa es: Alguien abre la ventana todos los días (Presente Simple).

The passive is: The window is opened every day.

El pasivo es: La ventana se abre todos los días.

Present Simple for the verb 'to be'.

Presente simple para el verbo 'to be'.

So, now let's change the tense of the active sentence to Present Perfect.

Entonces, ahora cambiemos el tiempo de la oración activa a presente perfecto.

So, someone has opened the window.

Entonces, alguien ha abierto la ventana.

What's the passive form?

¿Cuál es la forma pasiva?

The passive form is: The window has been opened.

La forma pasiva es: La ventana ha sido abierta.

The verb 'to be' is now in the Present Perfect tense, 'has been'.

El verbo 'ser' ahora está en tiempo presente perfecto, 'ha sido'.

Right! An action has taken place. What's the result of this action?

¡Derecho! Ha tenido lugar una acción. ¿Cuál es el resultado de esta acción?

The result is that the window is now open. 'Open' is an ordinary adjective.

El resultado es que la ventana ahora está abierta. 'Abierto' es un adjetivo ordinario.

Right! Let's look at another example.

¡Derecho! Veamos otro ejemplo.

The active sentence is: I have booked our seats. What's the passive sentence?

La oración activa es: he reservado nuestros asientos. ¿Qué es la oración pasiva?

The passive sentence is: Our seats have been booked.

La oración pasiva es: Nuestros asientos han sido reservados.

And what's the result?

¿Y cuál es el resultado?

The result is that our seats are booked.

El resultado es que nuestros asientos están reservados.

'Booked' is also an adjective. It describes what has happened to the seats.

'Reservado' también es un adjetivo. Describe lo que ha sucedido con los asientos.

But, it's not an ordinary adjective, it's a participle adjective.

Pero, no es un adjetivo ordinario, es un adjetivo de participio.

Right! Let's look at another example.

¡Derecho! Veamos otro ejemplo.

The active sentence is: She has completed all the tasks. What's the passive sentence?

La oración activa es: Ella ha completado todas las tareas. ¿Qué es la oración pasiva?

The passive form is: All the tasks have been completed.

La forma pasiva es: Todas las tareas han sido completadas.

So, what's the result?

Entonces, ¿cuál es el resultado?

The result is that all the tasks are complete or completed.

El resultado es que todas las tareas están completas o completadas.

In this situation, you have a choice of the ordinary adjective 'complete', or the participle adjective 'completed'.

En esta situación, puede elegir entre el adjetivo ordinario 'completo' o el adjetivo participio 'completado'.

If you use the ordinary adjective 'complete', you're only describing the noun.

Si usa el adjetivo ordinario 'completo' , solo está describiendo el sustantivo.

If you use the participle adjective 'completed',  you're showing that an action was carried out on the noun.

Si usa el adjetivo de participio 'completado' , está mostrando que se llevó a cabo una acción en el sustantivo.

Right! Let's finish with two more examples to clarify the three uses of the past participle.

¡Derecho! Terminemos con dos ejemplos más para aclarar los tres usos del participio pasado.

Look at the first context.

Mira el primer contexto.

Something like: I empty the bin daily.

Algo así como: vacío la papelera todos los días.

So, when someone asks you: Have you emptied the bin today? They're using 'empty' in the Present Perfect tense active.

Entonces, cuando alguien te pregunta: ¿Has vaciado la papelera hoy? Están usando 'vacío' en el tiempo presente perfecto activo.

You can answer: Yes, it has been emptied.

Puedes responder: Sí, se ha vaciado.

You're using 'emptied' in the passive voice of the same tense, Present Perfect.

Estás usando 'vaciado' en la voz pasiva del mismo tiempo, presente perfecto.

Or, you can just describe the state of the bin: It's emptied.

O simplemente puede describir el estado de la papelera: está vacía.

You're using the Past Participle as an adjective here. A participle adjective.

Estás usando el Participio Pasado como adjetivo aquí. Un adjetivo en participio.

But, because the ordinary adjective 'empty'  also exists, you can say: It is empty.

Pero, debido a que también existe el adjetivo ordinario 'vacío' , puedes decir: Está vacío.

Right! Let's look at one final context to make this perfectly clear.

¡Derecho! Veamos un contexto final para dejar esto perfectamente claro.

Let's say that you do the shopping every week.

Digamos que haces las compras todas las semanas.

So, when someone asks you: Have you done the shopping this week?

Entonces, cuando alguien te pregunta: ¿Has hecho las compras esta semana?

They're using 'done', the past participle, in the Present Perfect tense in the active form.

Están usando 'done', el participio pasado, en tiempo presente perfecto en la forma activa.

If you answer: Yes, it has been done. You're using 'done', the past participle, in the passive form of the Present Perfect tense.

Si responde: Sí, se ha hecho. Estás usando 'hecho', el participio pasado, en la forma pasiva del tiempo presente perfecto.

Or, you can simply say: It is done.

O simplemente puede decir: Está hecho.

Now, you're using 'done', the past participle, as a participle adjective.

Ahora, estás usando 'hecho', el participio pasado, como adjetivo de participio.

And in this case, there is no ordinary adjective to describe the result.

Y en este caso, no existe un adjetivo común para describir el resultado.

Right! That's the end of  this lesson.

¡Derecho! Ese es el final de esta lección.
