Present Perfect: Active & Passive | Participle Adjectives | Advanced English Grammar

The fact that the Past Participle is used in Perfect tenses, the Passive Voice,

Fakta bahwa Past Participle digunakan dalam Perfect tenses, Passive Voice,

and also sometimes as an adjective can be very confusing.

dan terkadang juga sebagai kata sifat bisa sangat membingungkan.

So, in this lesson we're going to review these three uses of the Past Participle form.

So, let's start by looking at the active to passive formulation.

Jadi, mari kita mulai dengan melihat formulasi aktif ke pasif.

Remember that a key point is that we must respect the tense.

Ingatlah bahwa poin utamanya adalah kita harus menghargai tenses.

For example, if the active sentence is: Someone opens the window every day (Present Simple).

Misalnya, jika kalimat aktifnya adalah: Seseorang membuka jendela setiap hari (Present Simple).

The passive is: The window is opened every day.

Pasifnya adalah: Jendela dibuka setiap hari.

Present Simple for the verb 'to be'.

Present Simple untuk kata kerja 'to be'.

So, now let's change the tense of the active sentence to Present Perfect.

Jadi, sekarang mari kita ubah tense dari kalimat aktif menjadi Present Perfect.

So, someone has opened the window.

Jadi, seseorang telah membuka jendela.

What's the passive form?

Apa bentuk pasifnya?

The passive form is: The window has been opened.

Bentuk pasifnya adalah: Jendela telah dibuka.

The verb 'to be' is now in the Present Perfect tense, 'has been'.

Kata kerja 'menjadi' sekarang dalam bentuk Present Perfect, 'telah'.

Right! An action has taken place. What's the result of this action?

Benar! Suatu tindakan telah terjadi. Apa hasil dari tindakan ini?

The result is that the window is now open. 'Open' is an ordinary adjective.

Hasilnya adalah jendela sekarang terbuka. 'Buka' adalah kata sifat biasa.

Right! Let's look at another example.

Benar! Mari kita lihat contoh lain.

The active sentence is: I have booked our seats. What's the passive sentence?

Kalimat aktifnya adalah: Saya telah memesan tempat duduk kami. Apa itu kalimat pasif?

The passive sentence is: Our seats have been booked.

Kalimat pasifnya adalah: Kursi kami telah dipesan.

And what's the result?

Dan apa hasilnya?

The result is that our seats are booked.

Hasilnya adalah kursi kami sudah dipesan.

'Booked' is also an adjective. It describes what has happened to the seats.

'Dipesan' juga merupakan kata sifat. Ini menjelaskan apa yang terjadi pada kursi.

But, it's not an ordinary adjective, it's a participle adjective.

Namun, ini bukan kata sifat biasa, melainkan kata sifat partisipatif.

Right! Let's look at another example.

Benar! Mari kita lihat contoh lain.

The active sentence is: She has completed all the tasks. What's the passive sentence?

Kalimat aktifnya adalah: Dia telah menyelesaikan semua tugas. Apa itu kalimat pasif?

The passive form is: All the tasks have been completed.

Bentuk pasifnya adalah: Semua tugas telah diselesaikan.

So, what's the result?

Jadi, apa hasilnya?

The result is that all the tasks are complete or completed.

Hasilnya adalah semua tugas selesai atau selesai.

In this situation, you have a choice of the ordinary adjective 'complete', or the participle adjective 'completed'.

Dalam situasi ini, Anda memiliki pilihan kata sifat biasa 'lengkap', atau kata sifat partisipatif 'selesai'.

If you use the ordinary adjective 'complete', you're only describing the noun.

Jika Anda menggunakan kata sifat biasa 'lengkap', Anda hanya mendeskripsikan kata benda.

If you use the participle adjective 'completed',  you're showing that an action was carried out on the noun.

Jika Anda menggunakan kata sifat partisip 'selesai', Anda menunjukkan bahwa suatu tindakan telah dilakukan pada kata benda.

Right! Let's finish with two more examples to clarify the three uses of the past participle.

Benar! Mari selesaikan dengan dua contoh lagi untuk mengklarifikasi ketiga penggunaan participle lampau.

Look at the first context.

Lihat konteks pertama.

Something like: I empty the bin daily.

Sesuatu seperti: Saya mengosongkan tempat sampah setiap hari.

So, when someone asks you: Have you emptied the bin today? They're using 'empty' in the Present Perfect tense active.

Jadi, saat seseorang bertanya kepada Anda: Sudahkah Anda mengosongkan tempat sampah hari ini? Mereka menggunakan 'kosong' di Present Perfect tense active.

You can answer: Yes, it has been emptied.

Anda dapat menjawab: Ya, sudah dikosongkan.

You're using 'emptied' in the passive voice of the same tense, Present Perfect.

Anda menggunakan 'kosong' dalam suara pasif dengan tenses yang sama, Present Perfect.

Or, you can just describe the state of the bin: It's emptied.

Atau, Anda cukup menjelaskan status tempat sampah: Dikosongkan.

You're using the Past Participle as an adjective here. A participle adjective.

Anda menggunakan Past Participle sebagai kata sifat di sini. Kata sifat partisipatif.

But, because the ordinary adjective 'empty'  also exists, you can say: It is empty.

Tapi, karena kata sifat biasa 'kosong' juga ada, bisa dibilang: Ini kosong.

Right! Let's look at one final context to make this perfectly clear.

Benar! Mari kita lihat satu konteks terakhir untuk memperjelasnya.

Let's say that you do the shopping every week.

Katakanlah Anda berbelanja setiap minggu.

So, when someone asks you: Have you done the shopping this week?

Jadi, ketika seseorang bertanya kepada Anda: Sudahkah Anda berbelanja minggu ini?

They're using 'done', the past participle, in the Present Perfect tense in the active form.

Mereka menggunakan 'done', past participle, dalam Present Perfect tense dalam bentuk aktif.

If you answer: Yes, it has been done. You're using 'done', the past participle, in the passive form of the Present Perfect tense.

Jika Anda menjawab: Ya, sudah dilakukan. Anda menggunakan 'done', past participle, dalam bentuk pasif dari Present Perfect tense.

Or, you can simply say: It is done.

Atau, Anda cukup mengatakan: Selesai.

Now, you're using 'done', the past participle, as a participle adjective.

Sekarang, Anda menggunakan 'done', past participle, sebagai kata sifat participle.

And in this case, there is no ordinary adjective to describe the result.

Dan dalam hal ini, tidak ada kata sifat biasa untuk menjelaskan hasilnya.

Right! That's the end of  this lesson.
