Present Perfect: Active & Passive | Participle Adjectives | Advanced English Grammar

The fact that the Past Participle is used in Perfect tenses, the Passive Voice,

Il fatto che il participio passato sia usato nei tempi perfetti, la voce passiva

and also sometimes as an adjective can be very confusing.

e talvolta anche come aggettivo può creare molta confusione.

So, in this lesson we're going to review these three uses of the Past Participle form.

Quindi, in questa lezione esamineremo questi tre usi della forma del participio passato.

So, let's start by looking at the active to passive formulation.

Quindi, iniziamo osservando la formulazione da attivo a passivo.

Remember that a key point is that we must respect the tense.

Ricorda che un punto chiave è che dobbiamo rispettare il tempo.

For example, if the active sentence is: Someone opens the window every day (Present Simple).

Ad esempio, se la frase attiva è: Qualcuno apre la finestra ogni giorno (Present Simple).

The passive is: The window is opened every day.

Il passivo è: la finestra viene aperta ogni giorno.

Present Simple for the verb 'to be'.

Present Simple per il verbo 'essere'.

So, now let's change the tense of the active sentence to Present Perfect.

Quindi, ora cambiamo il tempo della frase attiva in Present Perfect.

So, someone has opened the window.

Quindi, qualcuno ha aperto la finestra.

What's the passive form?

Qual è la forma passiva?

The passive form is: The window has been opened.

La forma passiva è: la finestra è stata aperta.

The verb 'to be' is now in the Present Perfect tense, 'has been'.

Il verbo "essere" è ora al Present Perfect, "è stato".

Right! An action has taken place. What's the result of this action?

Giusto! Si è verificata un'azione. Qual è il risultato di questa azione?

The result is that the window is now open. 'Open' is an ordinary adjective.

Il risultato è che la finestra è ora aperta. "Aperto" è un aggettivo ordinario.

Right! Let's look at another example.

Giusto! Diamo un'occhiata a un altro esempio.

The active sentence is: I have booked our seats. What's the passive sentence?

La frase attiva è: ho prenotato i nostri posti. Qual è la frase passiva?

The passive sentence is: Our seats have been booked.

La frase passiva è: i nostri posti sono stati prenotati.

And what's the result?

E qual è il risultato?

The result is that our seats are booked.

Il risultato è che i nostri posti sono prenotati.

'Booked' is also an adjective. It describes what has happened to the seats.

Anche "prenotato" è un aggettivo. Descrive cosa è successo ai sedili.

But, it's not an ordinary adjective, it's a participle adjective.

Ma non è un aggettivo ordinario, è un aggettivo participio.

Right! Let's look at another example.

Giusto! Diamo un'occhiata a un altro esempio.

The active sentence is: She has completed all the tasks. What's the passive sentence?

La frase attiva è: Ha completato tutti i compiti. Qual è la frase passiva?

The passive form is: All the tasks have been completed.

La forma passiva è: tutte le attività sono state completate.

So, what's the result?

Allora, qual è il risultato?

The result is that all the tasks are complete or completed.

Il risultato è che tutte le attività sono complete o completate.

In this situation, you have a choice of the ordinary adjective 'complete', or the participle adjective 'completed'.

In questa situazione, puoi scegliere tra l'aggettivo ordinario "completo" o l'aggettivo participio "completato".

If you use the ordinary adjective 'complete', you're only describing the noun.

Se usi l'aggettivo ordinario 'completo', stai solo descrivendo il sostantivo.

If you use the participle adjective 'completed',  you're showing that an action was carried out on the noun.

Se usi l'aggettivo participio "completato", stai dimostrando che è stata eseguita un'azione sul sostantivo.

Right! Let's finish with two more examples to clarify the three uses of the past participle.

Giusto! Concludiamo con altri due esempi per chiarire i tre usi del participio passato.

Look at the first context.

Guarda il primo contesto.

Something like: I empty the bin daily.

Qualcosa del tipo: svuoto il cestino ogni giorno.

So, when someone asks you: Have you emptied the bin today? They're using 'empty' in the Present Perfect tense active.

Quindi, quando qualcuno ti chiede: hai svuotato il cestino oggi? Stanno usando 'vuoto' al Present Perfect attivo.

You can answer: Yes, it has been emptied.

Puoi rispondere: Sì, è stato svuotato.

You're using 'emptied' in the passive voice of the same tense, Present Perfect.

Stai usando "emptied" nella voce passiva dello stesso tempo, Present Perfect.

Or, you can just describe the state of the bin: It's emptied.

Oppure puoi semplicemente descrivere lo stato del cestino: è vuoto.

You're using the Past Participle as an adjective here. A participle adjective.

Stai usando il participio passato come aggettivo qui. Un aggettivo participio.

But, because the ordinary adjective 'empty'  also exists, you can say: It is empty.

Ma poiché esiste anche l'aggettivo ordinario "vuoto" , puoi dire: è vuoto.

Right! Let's look at one final context to make this perfectly clear.

Giusto! Diamo un'occhiata a un contesto finale per renderlo perfettamente chiaro.

Let's say that you do the shopping every week.

Diciamo che fai la spesa ogni settimana.

So, when someone asks you: Have you done the shopping this week?

Quindi, quando qualcuno ti chiede: hai fatto la spesa questa settimana?

They're using 'done', the past participle, in the Present Perfect tense in the active form.

Stanno usando 'done', il participio passato, al Present Perfect nella forma attiva.

If you answer: Yes, it has been done. You're using 'done', the past participle, in the passive form of the Present Perfect tense.

Se rispondi: Sì, è stato fatto. Stai usando 'done', il participio passato, nella forma passiva del Present Perfect.

Or, you can simply say: It is done.

Oppure puoi semplicemente dire: è fatto.

Now, you're using 'done', the past participle, as a participle adjective.

Ora stai usando 'done', il participio passato, come aggettivo participio.

And in this case, there is no ordinary adjective to describe the result.

E in questo caso, non esiste un aggettivo ordinario per descrivere il risultato.

Right! That's the end of  this lesson.
