Present Perfect: Active & Passive | Participle Adjectives | English Grammar Lesson | C1-Advanced

The fact that the Past Participle is used in Perfect tenses, the Passive Voice,

העובדה שחלק העבר משמש בזמן מושלם, הקול הפסיבי,

and also sometimes as an adjective can be very confusing.

ולפעמים גם כשם תואר יכולה להיות מאוד מבלבלת.

So, in this lesson we're going to review these three uses of the Past Participle form.

So, let's start by looking at the active to passive formulation.

אז בואו נתחיל בהסתכלות על הניסוח הפעיל לפסיבי.

Remember that a key point is that we must respect the tense.

זכור שנקודת מפתח היא שעלינו לכבד את המתוח.

For example, if the active sentence is: Someone opens the window every day (Present Simple).

לדוגמה, אם המשפט הפעיל הוא: מישהו פותח את החלון כל יום (Present Simple).

The passive is: The window is opened every day.

הפאסיבי הוא: החלון נפתח כל יום.

Present Simple for the verb 'to be'.

Present Simple עבור הפועל 'להיות'.

So, now let's change the tense of the active sentence to Present Perfect.

אז, עכשיו בואו נשנה את הזמן של המשפט הפעיל ל-Present Perfect.

So, someone has opened the window.

אז מישהו פתח את החלון.

What's the passive form?

מהי הצורה הפסיבית?

The passive form is: The window has been opened.

הצורה הפסיבית היא: החלון נפתח.

The verb 'to be' is now in the Present Perfect tense, 'has been'.

הפועל 'להיות' נמצא כעת בזמן הווה מושלם, 'היה'.

Right! An action has taken place. What's the result of this action?

ימין! התרחשה פעולה. מה התוצאה של הפעולה הזו?

The result is that the window is now open. 'Open' is an ordinary adjective.

התוצאה היא שהחלון פתוח כעת. 'פתוח' הוא שם תואר רגיל.

Right! Let's look at another example.

ימין! בואו נסתכל על דוגמה נוספת.

The active sentence is: I have booked our seats. What's the passive sentence?

המשפט הפעיל הוא: הזמנתי את המושבים שלנו. מה המשפט הסביל?

The passive sentence is: Our seats have been booked.

המשפט הפסיבי הוא: המושבים שלנו הוזמנו.

And what's the result?

ומה התוצאה?

The result is that our seats are booked.

התוצאה היא שהמושבים שלנו פנויים.

'Booked' is also an adjective. It describes what has happened to the seats.

'מוזמן' הוא גם שם תואר. הוא מתאר מה קרה למושבים.

But, it's not an ordinary adjective, it's a participle adjective.

אבל, זה לא שם תואר רגיל, זה שם תואר חלקי.

Right! Let's look at another example.

ימין! בואו נסתכל על דוגמה נוספת.

The active sentence is: She has completed all the tasks. What's the passive sentence?

המשפט הפעיל הוא: היא השלימה את כל המשימות. מה המשפט הסביל?

The passive form is: All the tasks have been completed.

הטופס הפסיבי הוא: כל המשימות הושלמו.

So, what's the result?

אז מה התוצאה?

The result is that all the tasks are complete or completed.

התוצאה היא שכל המשימות הושלמו או הושלמו.

In this situation, you have a choice of the ordinary adjective 'complete', or the participle adjective 'completed'.

במצב זה, יש לך בחירה בשם התואר הרגיל 'השלם', או את שם התואר המשולב 'הושלם'.

If you use the ordinary adjective 'complete', you're only describing the noun.

אם אתה משתמש בשם התואר הרגיל 'שלם', אתה מתאר רק את שם העצם.

If you use the participle adjective 'completed',  you're showing that an action was carried out on the noun.

אם אתה משתמש בשם התואר 'הושלם', אתה מראה שבוצעה פעולה על שם העצם.

Right! Let's finish with two more examples to clarify the three uses of the past participle.

ימין! נסיים בשתי דוגמאות נוספות כדי להבהיר את שלושת השימושים של חלק העבר.

Look at the first context.

תסתכל על ההקשר הראשון.

Something like: I empty the bin daily.

משהו כמו: אני מרוקן את הפח מדי יום.

So, when someone asks you: Have you emptied the bin today? They're using 'empty' in the Present Perfect tense active.

אז, כשמישהו שואל אותך: האם רוקנת את הפח היום? הם משתמשים ב-'empty' בזמן הווה מושלם פעיל.

You can answer: Yes, it has been emptied.

אתה יכול לענות: כן, הוא התרוקן.

You're using 'emptied' in the passive voice of the same tense, Present Perfect.

אתה משתמש ב'מרוקן' בקול הפסיבי של אותו זמן, Present Perfect.

Or, you can just describe the state of the bin: It's emptied.

לחלופין, אתה יכול פשוט לתאר את מצב הפח: הוא התרוקן.

You're using the Past Participle as an adjective here. A participle adjective.

אתה משתמש כאן בחלק העבר בתור שם תואר. שם תואר חלקי.

But, because the ordinary adjective 'empty'  also exists, you can say: It is empty.

אבל, מכיוון שקיים גם שם התואר הרגיל 'ריק' , אתה יכול לומר: הוא ריק.

Right! Let's look at one final context to make this perfectly clear.

ימין! בואו נסתכל על הקשר אחרון אחד כדי להבהיר זאת לחלוטין.

Let's say that you do the shopping every week.

נניח שאתה עושה את הקניות כל שבוע.

So, when someone asks you: Have you done the shopping this week?

אז, כשמישהו שואל אותך: האם ביצעת את הקניות השבוע?

They're using 'done', the past participle, in the Present Perfect tense in the active form.

הם משתמשים ב'בוצע', חלק העבר, בזמן הווה מושלם בצורה הפעילה.

If you answer: Yes, it has been done. You're using 'done', the past participle, in the passive form of the Present Perfect tense.

אם תענה: כן, זה בוצע. אתה משתמש ב'בוצע', חלק העבר, בצורה הפסיבית של הזמן הווה מושלם.

Or, you can simply say: It is done.

או, אתה יכול פשוט לומר: זה נעשה.

Now, you're using 'done', the past participle, as a participle adjective.

כעת, אתה משתמש ב'בוצע', חלק העבר, כשם תואר.

And in this case, there is no ordinary adjective to describe the result.

ובמקרה זה, אין שם תואר רגיל לתיאור התוצאה.

Right! That's the end of  this lesson.

ימין! זה הסוף של  שיעור זה.
