Already Yet Still Ever Never with Present Perfect | Common mistakes in daily conversations

already, yet, still, ever, and never.

Right! Let's start the lesson by looking at common mistake No.1.

Someone says: Have you already posted the package?

Birisi şöyle diyor: Paketi zaten gönderdiniz mi?

And the other person answers: No, I haven't already posted it.

Ve diğer kişi yanıt verir: Hayır, daha önce yayınlamadım.

There's a mistake in the answer. What do you think it is?

Cevapta bir hata var. Sence bu ne?

The correct answer is: I haven't posted it yet.

Doğru cevap: Henüz yayınlamadım.

You must avoid using 'already' in a negative sentence.

Olumsuz bir cümlede "zaten" kullanmaktan kaçınmalısınız. Bunun

Use 'yet' instead.

yerine 'henüz' kullanın.

Now, a common question is: Can we use 'yet' in the question?

Şimdi, ortak bir soru şudur: Soruda "henüz" kullanabilir miyiz?

And the answer is yes! You can say:  Have you posted the package yet?

Ve cevap evet! Şunu söyleyebilirsiniz: Paketi gönderdiniz mi?

So, is there a difference between using  'already' or 'yet' in the question?

Yes, there's a slight difference.

Evet, küçük bir fark var.

When you ask a question with 'already' you usually expect a positive answer.

Bir soruyu "zaten" ile sorduğunuzda genellikle olumlu bir yanıt beklersiniz.

Whereas, when you ask your  question with 'yet' you usually expect a negative answer.

Oysa, sorunuzu "henüz" ile sorduğunuzda genellikle olumsuz bir yanıt beklersiniz.

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.2.

Sağ! 2 numaralı yaygın hataya bakalım.

Continuing the same dialogue, you say to the person:

Aynı diyaloğa devam ederek kişiye şunu söylersiniz:

You promised to post the package yesterday. Have you posted it?

Paketi dün göndermeye söz vermiştiniz. Yayınladın mı?

And they answer: No, I haven't still posted it.

Ve şu yanıtı verirler: Hayır, henüz yayınlamadım.

There is a mistake in the answer. What do you think it is?

Cevapta bir hata var. Sence bu ne?

The mistake is in the position of 'still'.

Hata 'hala' konumunda.

When 'still' insists on a negation, it has to go before:

"hala" bir olumsuzlamada ısrar ettiğinde, önce gitmesi gerekir:

No, I still haven't posted it.

Hayır, hâlâ yayınlamadım.

Okay, let's put what we've learned so far into one dialogue. 

Tamam, şimdiye kadar öğrendiklerimizi tek bir diyaloğa koyalım.

For example, someone says:

Örneğin birisi şöyle der:

Have you booked the tickets yet?

Henüz bilet rezervasyonu yaptınız mı?

No, I haven't booked them yet. I'll do it tomorrow.

Hayır, henüz rezervasyon yapmadım. Onu yarın yapacağım.

Right! It's now the next day, and the person says:

Sağ! Şimdi ertesi gün ve kişi şöyle diyor:

I hope you've already booked the tickets.

Umarım biletleri zaten ayırtmışsınızdır.

Oh, I'm sorry,  I still haven't booked them. I'll do it right now.

Üzgünüm, onları hâlâ ayırtmadım. Hemen şimdi yapacağım.

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.3.

Someone says: Have you ever been to Italy?

Biri diyor ki: Hiç İtalya'ya gittin mi?

And the answer comes: Yes, I've ever been there.

Ve cevap geliyor: Evet, hiç orada bulundum.

There is a mistake in the answer. What is it?

Cevapta yanlışlık var. Nedir?

We must not use 'ever' in the answer.

Cevapta 'ever' kullanmamalıyız.

The correct word to use here is 'already'.

Burada kullanılacak doğru kelime "zaten"dir.

Yes, I've already been there.

Evet, zaten orada bulundum.

So, what's the negative answer to this question?

Peki, bu sorunun olumsuz cevabı nedir?

There are two possibilities you can use... 'ever' with a negative verb:

Olumsuz bir fiille... 'ever' kullanabileceğiniz iki olasılık vardır:

I haven't ever been there.

Hiç orada bulunmadım.

Or, it's better to use 'never': I've never been there.

Veya "asla" kullanmak daha iyidir: Oraya hiç gitmedim.

A question you might ask is: Can we use yet in this situation?

Sorabileceğiniz bir soru şudur: Henüz bu durumda kullanabilir miyiz?

The answer is... yes!

Cevap Evet!

But, you change the connotation slightly.

Ancak çağrışımı biraz değiştirirsiniz.

If someone says: Have you ever been to Italy? And you answer with 'yet':

Birisi derse: Hiç İtalya'ya gittin mi? Ve 'henüz' şeklinde yanıt verirsiniz:

No, I haven't been there yet.

Hayır, henüz oraya gitmedim.

You mean that you're planning to visit Italy someday.

Bir gün İtalya'yı ziyaret etmeyi planladığınızı kastediyorsunuz.
