Already Yet Still Ever Never with Present Perfect | Common mistakes in daily conversations

Today, we're going to review the adverbs

already, yet, still, ever, and never.

We'll do this by looking at the common mistakes I hear from you, and the questions I've received from you.

Right! Let's start the lesson by looking at common mistake No.1.

오른쪽! 일반적인 실수 1번부터 살펴보겠습니다.

Someone says: Have you already posted the package?

누군가가 말합니다: 패키지를 이미 게시하셨나요?

And the other person answers: No, I haven't already posted it.

그러면 다른 사람이 대답합니다. 아니요, 아직 게시하지 않았습니다.

There's a mistake in the answer. What do you think it is?

답변에 오류가 있습니다. 당신은 그것이 무엇이라고 생각합니까?

The correct answer is: I haven't posted it yet.

정답은 아직 게시하지 않았습니다.

You must avoid using 'already' in a negative sentence.

부정적인 문장에서 '이미'를 사용하지 않아야 합니다.

Use 'yet' instead.

대신 '아직'을 사용하세요.

Now, a common question is: Can we use 'yet' in the question?

이제 일반적인 질문은 질문에 '아직'을 사용할 수 있나요?

And the answer is yes! You can say:  Have you posted the package yet?

대답은 '예'입니다! 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다. 패키지를 아직 게시하지 않았나요?

So, is there a difference between using  'already' or 'yet' in the question?

그렇다면 질문에서 '이미'와 '아직'을 사용하는 것 사이에 차이가 있나요?

Yes, there's a slight difference.

예, 약간의 차이가 있습니다.

When you ask a question with 'already' you usually expect a positive answer.

'이미'로 질문하면 일반적으로 긍정적인 답변을 기대합니다.

Whereas, when you ask your  question with 'yet' you usually expect a negative answer.

반면 '아직'으로 질문하면 일반적으로 부정적인 대답을 기대합니다.

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.2.

오른쪽! 일반적인 실수 2번을 살펴보겠습니다.

Continuing the same dialogue, you say to the person:

같은 대화를 계속하면서 그 사람에게 다음과 같이 말합니다.

You promised to post the package yesterday. Have you posted it?

어제 패키지를 게시하기로 약속했습니다. 게시 했습니까?

And they answer: No, I haven't still posted it.

그러면 그들은 다음과 같이 대답합니다. 아니요, 아직 게시하지 않았습니다.

There is a mistake in the answer. What do you think it is?

답변에 오류가 있습니다. 당신은 그것이 무엇이라고 생각합니까?

The mistake is in the position of 'still'.

실수는 '여전히'의 위치에 있다.

When 'still' insists on a negation, it has to go before:

'여전히'가 부정을 주장하는 경우 앞에

No, I still haven't posted it.

있어야 합니다. 아니요, 아직 게시하지 않았습니다.

Okay, let's put what we've learned so far into one dialogue. 

좋아요, 지금까지 배운 것을 하나의 대화에 넣어봅시다.

For example, someone says:

예를 들어 누군가가 말합니다

Have you booked the tickets yet?

. 티켓을 아직 예약하셨나요?

No, I haven't booked them yet. I'll do it tomorrow.

아니요, 아직 예약하지 않았습니다. 내일 할게요.

Right! It's now the next day, and the person says:

오른쪽! 이제 다음 날인데 그 사람이 말합니다

I hope you've already booked the tickets.

. 이미 표를 예매했길 바랍니다.

Oh, I'm sorry,  I still haven't booked them. I'll do it right now.

아, 죄송합니다. 아직 예약을 못했어요. 지금 바로 할게요.

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.3.

오른쪽! 흔한 실수 3번을 보자.

Someone says: Have you ever been to Italy?

누군가 말한다: 이탈리아에 가본 적이 있습니까?

And the answer comes: Yes, I've ever been there.

대답은 다음과 같습니다. 예, 거기에 가본 적이 있습니다.

There is a mistake in the answer. What is it?

답변에 오류가 있습니다. 뭐야?

We must not use 'ever' in the answer.

대답에 'ever'를 사용해서는 안 됩니다.

The correct word to use here is 'already'.

여기서 사용할 올바른 단어는 '이미'입니다.

Yes, I've already been there.

예, 이미 가봤습니다.

So, what's the negative answer to this question?

그렇다면 이 질문에 대한 부정적인 대답은 무엇일까요?

There are two possibilities you can use... 'ever' with a negative verb:

부정 동사와 함께 'ever'를 사용할 수 있는 두 가지 가능성이 있습니다.

I haven't ever been there.

I haven't ever been there.

Or, it's better to use 'never': I've never been there.

또는 '한 번도 안 함'을 사용하는 것이 좋습니다. 거기에 가본 적이 없습니다.

A question you might ask is: Can we use yet in this situation?

다음과 같은 질문을 할 수 있습니다. 이 상황에서 아직 사용할 수 있습니까?

The answer is... yes!

답은... 네!

But, you change the connotation slightly.

그러나 의미를 약간 변경합니다.

If someone says: Have you ever been to Italy? And you answer with 'yet':

누군가 말한다면: 이탈리아에 가본 적이 있습니까? 그리고 당신은 '아직'으로 대답합니다:

No, I haven't been there yet.

아니요, 아직 가본 적이 없습니다.

You mean that you're planning to visit Italy someday.

언젠가 이탈리아를 방문할 계획이라는 뜻입니다.
