Already Yet Still Ever Never with Present Perfect | Common mistakes in daily conversations

Today, we're going to review the adverbs

already, yet, still, ever, and never.

既に、まだ、まだ、ずっと、そして決して見直すつもりです。

We'll do this by looking at the common mistakes I hear from you, and the questions I've received from you.

Right! Let's start the lesson by looking at common mistake No.1.

右！ よくある間違いその 1 からレッスンを始めましょう。

Someone says: Have you already posted the package?

誰かが言う: すでにパッケージを投稿しましたか?

And the other person answers: No, I haven't already posted it.

相手は「いいえ、まだ投稿していません」と答えます。

There's a mistake in the answer. What do you think it is?

答えに誤りがあります。 それは何だと思いますか？

The correct answer is: I haven't posted it yet.

正解は、まだ投稿していません。

You must avoid using 'already' in a negative sentence.

否定文で「すでに」を使用することは避ける必要があります。

Use 'yet' instead.

代わりに「まだ」を使用してください。

Now, a common question is: Can we use 'yet' in the question?

さて、よくある質問は 、質問で「まだ」を使用できますか?

And the answer is yes! You can say:  Have you posted the package yet?

そして答えはイエスです！ 次のように言うことができます: パッケージはもう投稿しましたか?

So, is there a difference between using  'already' or 'yet' in the question?

では、質問で「すでに」と「まだ」を使用することに違いはありますか？

Yes, there's a slight difference.

はい、少し違いがあります。

When you ask a question with 'already' you usually expect a positive answer.

「すでに」という質問をすると、通常、肯定的な答えが期待されます。

Whereas, when you ask your  question with 'yet' you usually expect a negative answer.

一方、 「yet」を使って質問すると、通常は否定的な答えが期待されます。

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.2.

右！ よくある間違い 2 を見てみましょう。

Continuing the same dialogue, you say to the person:

同じ対話を続けて、あなたはその人に次のように言い

You promised to post the package yesterday. Have you posted it?

ます。昨日パッケージを発送することを約束しました。 投稿しましたか？

And they answer: No, I haven't still posted it.

そして彼らは答えます: いいえ、まだ投稿していません。

There is a mistake in the answer. What do you think it is?

答えに誤りがあります。 それは何だと思いますか？

The mistake is in the position of 'still'.

間違いは「まだ」の位置にあります。

When 'still' insists on a negation, it has to go before:

「まだ」が否定を主張する場合、それは前に行かなければなり

No, I still haven't posted it.

ません: いいえ、まだ投稿していません。

Okay, let's put what we've learned so far into one dialogue. 

さて、これまでに学んだことを 1 つのダイアログにまとめましょう。

For example, someone says:

たとえば、

Have you booked the tickets yet?

「チケットはもう予約しましたか？」と言う人がいます。

No, I haven't booked them yet. I'll do it tomorrow.

いいえ、まだ予約していません。 明日やります。

Right! It's now the next day, and the person says:

右！ 次の日になりましたが、その人はこう言いました:

I hope you've already booked the tickets.

チケットはもう予約してあるといいのですが。

Oh, I'm sorry,  I still haven't booked them. I'll do it right now.

申し訳ありません が、まだ予約していません。 今すぐやります。

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.3.

右！ よくある間違いNo.3を見てみましょう。

Someone says: Have you ever been to Italy?

誰かが言う: あなたはイタリアに行ったことがありますか?

And the answer comes: Yes, I've ever been there.

そして答えが来ます：はい、私はそこに行ったことがあります.

There is a mistake in the answer. What is it?

答えに誤りがあります。 それは何ですか？

We must not use 'ever' in the answer.

答えに「ever」を使用してはいけません。

The correct word to use here is 'already'.

ここで使用する正しい言葉は「すでに」です。

Yes, I've already been there.

はい、私はすでにそこにいました。

So, what's the negative answer to this question?

では、この質問に対する否定的な答えは何ですか?

There are two possibilities you can use... 'ever' with a negative verb:

使用できる可能性は 2 つあります... 'ever' を否定動詞と一緒に使用します。

I haven't ever been there.

私は行ったことがありません。

Or, it's better to use 'never': I've never been there.

または、'never' を使用した方がよいです。私はそこに行ったことがありません。

A question you might ask is: Can we use yet in this situation?

あなたが尋ねるかもしれない質問は 、この状況でまだ使用できますか?

The answer is... yes!

答えは... はい！

But, you change the connotation slightly.

しかし、あなたは意味合いを少し変えます。

If someone says: Have you ever been to Italy? And you answer with 'yet':

もしイタリアに行ったことがありますか？ あなたは「まだ」と答えます:

No, I haven't been there yet.

いいえ、まだ行ったことがありません。

You mean that you're planning to visit Italy someday.

いつかイタリアを訪れる予定があるということですね。
