Today, we're going to review the adverbs

Hoje, vamos revisar os advérbios

already, yet, still, ever, and never.

já, ainda, ainda, sempre e nunca.

We'll do this by looking at the common mistakes I hear from you, and the questions I've received from you.

Right! Let's start the lesson by looking at common mistake No.1.

Certo! Vamos começar a lição examinando o erro comum número 1.

Someone says: Have you already posted the package?

Alguém diz: Você já postou o pacote?

And the other person answers: No, I haven't already posted it.

E a outra pessoa responde: Não, ainda não postei.

There's a mistake in the answer. What do you think it is?

Há um erro na resposta. O que você acha que é isso?

The correct answer is: I haven't posted it yet.

A resposta correta é: ainda não postei.

You must avoid using 'already' in a negative sentence.

Você deve evitar usar 'já' em uma frase negativa.

Use 'yet' instead.

Em vez disso, use 'ainda'.

Now, a common question is: Can we use 'yet' in the question?

Agora, uma pergunta comum é: podemos usar 'ainda' na pergunta?

And the answer is yes! You can say:  Have you posted the package yet?

E a resposta é sim! Você pode dizer: Você já postou o pacote?

So, is there a difference between using  'already' or 'yet' in the question?

Então, existe alguma diferença entre usar 'já' ou 'ainda' na pergunta?

Yes, there's a slight difference.

Sim, há uma pequena diferença.

When you ask a question with 'already' you usually expect a positive answer.

Quando você faz uma pergunta com 'já', geralmente espera uma resposta positiva.

Whereas, when you ask your  question with 'yet' you usually expect a negative answer.

Considerando que, quando você faz sua pergunta com 'ainda', geralmente espera uma resposta negativa.

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.2.

Certo! Vejamos o erro comum nº 2.

Continuing the same dialogue, you say to the person:

Continuando o mesmo diálogo, você diz para a pessoa:

You promised to post the package yesterday. Have you posted it?

Você prometeu postar o pacote ontem. Você postou?

And they answer: No, I haven't still posted it.

E eles respondem: Não, ainda não postei.

There is a mistake in the answer. What do you think it is?

Há um erro na resposta. O que você acha que é isso?

The mistake is in the position of 'still'.

O erro está na posição de 'ainda'.

When 'still' insists on a negation, it has to go before:

Quando 'ainda' insiste em uma negação, tem que ir antes:

No, I still haven't posted it.

Não, ainda não postei.

Okay, let's put what we've learned so far into one dialogue. 

Ok, vamos colocar o que aprendemos até agora em um diálogo.

For example, someone says:

Por exemplo, alguém diz

Have you booked the tickets yet?

: você já reservou os ingressos?

No, I haven't booked them yet. I'll do it tomorrow.

Não, ainda não os reservei. Farei isso amanhã.

Right! It's now the next day, and the person says:

Certo! Já é dia seguinte e a pessoa diz:

I hope you've already booked the tickets.

espero que você já tenha reservado as passagens.

Oh, I'm sorry,  I still haven't booked them. I'll do it right now.

Oh, desculpe ,  ainda não os reservei. Eu vou fazer isso agora.

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.3.

Certo! Vejamos o erro comum No.3.

Someone says: Have you ever been to Italy?

Alguém diz: você já esteve na Itália?

And the answer comes: Yes, I've ever been there.

E vem a resposta: Sim, já estive lá.

There is a mistake in the answer. What is it?

Há um erro na resposta. O que é?

We must not use 'ever' in the answer.

Não devemos usar 'ever' na resposta.

The correct word to use here is 'already'.

A palavra correta a ser usada aqui é 'já'.

Yes, I've already been there.

Sim, eu já estive lá.

So, what's the negative answer to this question?

Então, qual é a resposta negativa a esta pergunta?

There are two possibilities you can use... 'ever' with a negative verb:

Existem duas possibilidades que você pode usar... 'sempre' com um verbo negativo:

I haven't ever been there.

Eu nunca estive lá.

Or, it's better to use 'never': I've never been there.

Ou é melhor usar 'nunca': nunca estive lá.

A question you might ask is: Can we use yet in this situation?

Uma pergunta que você pode fazer é: podemos usar yet nesta situação?

The answer is... yes!

A resposta é sim!

But, you change the connotation slightly.

Mas você muda ligeiramente a conotação.

If someone says: Have you ever been to Italy? And you answer with 'yet':

Se alguém disser: Você já esteve na Itália? E você responde com 'ainda':

No, I haven't been there yet.

Não, ainda não estive lá.

You mean that you're planning to visit Italy someday.

Você quer dizer que planeja visitar a Itália algum dia.
