Already Yet Still Ever Never with Present Perfect | Common mistakes in daily conversations

We'll do this by looking at the common mistakes I hear from you, and the questions I've received from you.

Right! Let's start the lesson by looking at common mistake No.1.

Someone says: Have you already posted the package?

Qualcuno dice: Hai già spedito il pacco?

And the other person answers: No, I haven't already posted it.

E l'altra persona risponde: No, non l'ho già pubblicato.

There's a mistake in the answer. What do you think it is?

C'è un errore nella risposta. Cosa pensi che sia?

The correct answer is: I haven't posted it yet.

La risposta corretta è: non l'ho ancora pubblicato.

You must avoid using 'already' in a negative sentence.

Devi evitare di usare "già" in una frase negativa.

Use 'yet' instead.

Usa invece 'ancora'.

Now, a common question is: Can we use 'yet' in the question?

Ora, una domanda comune è: possiamo usare "ancora" nella domanda?

And the answer is yes! You can say:  Have you posted the package yet?

E la risposta è si! Puoi dire: Hai già spedito il pacco?

So, is there a difference between using  'already' or 'yet' in the question?

Quindi, c'è differenza tra l'utilizzo di "già" o "ancora" nella domanda?

Yes, there's a slight difference.

Sì, c'è una leggera differenza.

When you ask a question with 'already' you usually expect a positive answer.

Quando fai una domanda con "già" di solito ti aspetti una risposta positiva.

Whereas, when you ask your  question with 'yet' you usually expect a negative answer.

Considerando che, quando fai la tua domanda con "ancora", di solito ti aspetti una risposta negativa.

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.2.

Giusto! Diamo un'occhiata all'errore comune n. 2.

Continuing the same dialogue, you say to the person:

Continuando lo stesso dialogo, dici alla persona:

You promised to post the package yesterday. Have you posted it?

hai promesso di spedire il pacco ieri. L'hai postato?

And they answer: No, I haven't still posted it.

E loro rispondono: No, non l'ho ancora pubblicato.

There is a mistake in the answer. What do you think it is?

C'è un errore nella risposta. Cosa pensi che sia?

The mistake is in the position of 'still'.

L'errore è nella posizione di 'ancora'.

When 'still' insists on a negation, it has to go before:

Quando "ancora" insiste su una negazione, deve andare prima:

No, I still haven't posted it.

no, non l'ho ancora pubblicato.

Okay, let's put what we've learned so far into one dialogue. 

Ok, mettiamo quello che abbiamo imparato finora in un dialogo.

For example, someone says:

Ad esempio, qualcuno dice:

Have you booked the tickets yet?

hai già prenotato i biglietti?

No, I haven't booked them yet. I'll do it tomorrow.

No, non li ho ancora prenotati. Lo farò domani.

Right! It's now the next day, and the person says:

Giusto! Adesso è il giorno successivo e la persona dice:

I hope you've already booked the tickets.

spero che tu abbia già prenotato i biglietti.

Oh, I'm sorry,  I still haven't booked them. I'll do it right now.

Oh, mi dispiace, non li ho ancora prenotati. Lo farò subito.

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.3.

Giusto! Diamo un'occhiata all'errore comune n. 3.

Someone says: Have you ever been to Italy?

Qualcuno dice: Sei mai stato in Italia?

And the answer comes: Yes, I've ever been there.

E la risposta arriva: Sì, ci sono mai stato.

There is a mistake in the answer. What is it?

C'è un errore nella risposta. Che cos'è?

We must not use 'ever' in the answer.

Non dobbiamo usare "ever" nella risposta.

The correct word to use here is 'already'.

La parola corretta da usare qui è "già".

Yes, I've already been there.

Sì, ci sono già stato.

So, what's the negative answer to this question?

Allora, qual è la risposta negativa a questa domanda?

There are two possibilities you can use... 'ever' with a negative verb:

Ci sono due possibilità che puoi usare... " ever" con un verbo negativo:

I haven't ever been there.

non ci sono mai stato.

Or, it's better to use 'never': I've never been there.

Oppure è meglio usare "never": non ci sono mai stato.

A question you might ask is: Can we use yet in this situation?

Una domanda che potresti porti è: possiamo usare yet in questa situazione?

The answer is... yes!

La risposta è si!

But, you change the connotation slightly.

Ma cambi leggermente la connotazione.

If someone says: Have you ever been to Italy? And you answer with 'yet':

Se qualcuno dice: Sei mai stato in Italia? E tu rispondi con "ancora":

No, I haven't been there yet.

no, non ci sono ancora stato.

You mean that you're planning to visit Italy someday.

Vuoi dire che hai intenzione di visitare l'Italia un giorno.

Right! That's the end of this lesson.
