Already Yet Still Ever Never with Present Perfect | Common mistakes in daily conversations

Today, we're going to review the adverbs

Hoy vamos a repasar los adverbios

already, yet, still, ever, and never.

ya, todavía, todavía, siempre y nunca.

We'll do this by looking at the common mistakes I hear from you, and the questions I've received from you.

Right! Let's start the lesson by looking at common mistake No.1.

¡Derecho! Comencemos la lección observando el error común número 1.

Someone says: Have you already posted the package?

Alguien dice: ¿Ya has publicado el paquete?

And the other person answers: No, I haven't already posted it.

Y la otra persona responde: No, aún no lo he publicado.

There's a mistake in the answer. What do you think it is?

Hay un error en la respuesta. ¿Qué piensas que es?

The correct answer is: I haven't posted it yet.

La respuesta correcta es: Aún no lo he publicado.

You must avoid using 'already' in a negative sentence.

Debes evitar usar 'ya' en una oración negativa.

Use 'yet' instead.

Utilice 'todavía' en su lugar.

Now, a common question is: Can we use 'yet' in the question?

Ahora, una pregunta común es: ¿Podemos usar 'todavía' en la pregunta?

And the answer is yes! You can say:  Have you posted the package yet?

¡Y la respuesta es sí! Puedes decir: ¿Ya has publicado el paquete?

So, is there a difference between using  'already' or 'yet' in the question?

Entonces, ¿hay alguna diferencia entre usar 'ya' o 'todavía' en la pregunta?

Yes, there's a slight difference.

Sí, hay una pequeña diferencia.

When you ask a question with 'already' you usually expect a positive answer.

Cuando hace una pregunta con 'ya', generalmente espera una respuesta positiva.

Whereas, when you ask your  question with 'yet' you usually expect a negative answer.

Mientras que, cuando hace su pregunta con 'todavía', generalmente espera una respuesta negativa.

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.2.

¡Derecho! Veamos el error común número 2.

Continuing the same dialogue, you say to the person:

Continuando con el mismo diálogo, le dices a la persona

You promised to post the package yesterday. Have you posted it?

: Prometiste publicar el paquete ayer. ¿Lo has publicado?

And they answer: No, I haven't still posted it.

Y ellos responden: No, todavía no lo he publicado.

There is a mistake in the answer. What do you think it is?

Hay un error en la respuesta. ¿Qué piensas que es?

The mistake is in the position of 'still'.

El error está en la posición de 'todavía'.

When 'still' insists on a negation, it has to go before:

Cuando 'todavía' insiste en una negación, tiene que ir antes:

No, I still haven't posted it.

No, todavía no lo he publicado.

Okay, let's put what we've learned so far into one dialogue. 

Bien, pongamos lo que hemos aprendido hasta ahora en un diálogo.

For example, someone says:

Por ejemplo, alguien dice:

Have you booked the tickets yet?

¿Ya reservaste las entradas?

No, I haven't booked them yet. I'll do it tomorrow.

No, todavía no los he reservado. Lo haré mañana.

Right! It's now the next day, and the person says:

¡Derecho! Ahora es el día siguiente, y la persona dice:

I hope you've already booked the tickets.

Espero que ya hayas reservado los boletos.

Oh, I'm sorry,  I still haven't booked them. I'll do it right now.

Oh, lo siento, todavía no los he reservado. Lo haré ahora mismo.

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.3.

¡Derecho! Veamos el error común No.3.

Someone says: Have you ever been to Italy?

Alguien dice: ¿Has estado alguna vez en Italia?

And the answer comes: Yes, I've ever been there.

Y llega la respuesta: Sí, alguna vez he estado allí.

There is a mistake in the answer. What is it?

Hay un error en la respuesta. ¿Qué es?

We must not use 'ever' in the answer.

No debemos usar 'nunca' en la respuesta.

The correct word to use here is 'already'.

La palabra correcta para usar aquí es 'ya'.

Yes, I've already been there.

Sí, ya he estado allí.

So, what's the negative answer to this question?

Entonces, ¿cuál es la respuesta negativa a esta pregunta?

There are two possibilities you can use... 'ever' with a negative verb:

Hay dos posibilidades que puedes usar... 'alguna vez' con un verbo negativo:

I haven't ever been there.

nunca he estado allí.

Or, it's better to use 'never': I've never been there.

O, es mejor usar 'nunca': nunca he estado allí.

A question you might ask is: Can we use yet in this situation?

Una pregunta que podría hacerse es: ¿Podemos usar todavía en esta situación?

The answer is... yes!

¡La respuesta es sí!

But, you change the connotation slightly.

Pero, cambias la connotación ligeramente.

If someone says: Have you ever been to Italy? And you answer with 'yet':

Si alguien dice: ¿Has estado alguna vez en Italia? Y respondes con 'todavía':

No, I haven't been there yet.

No, todavía no he estado allí.

You mean that you're planning to visit Italy someday.

Quiere decir que planea visitar Italia algún día.

Right! That's the end of this lesson.
