Already Yet Still Ever Never with Present Perfect | English Grammar Lesson

Today, we're going to review the adverbs

היום, אנחנו הולכים לסקור את התירואים

already, yet, still, ever, and never.

כבר, עדיין, עדיין, אף פעם, ולעולם לא.

We'll do this by looking at the common mistakes I hear from you, and the questions I've received from you.

Right! Let's start the lesson by looking at common mistake No.1.

ימין! נתחיל את השיעור בהסתכלות על טעות נפוצה מס' 1.

Someone says: Have you already posted the package?

מישהו אומר: האם כבר פרסמת את החבילה?

And the other person answers: No, I haven't already posted it.

והאדם השני עונה: לא, עוד לא פרסמתי את זה.

There's a mistake in the answer. What do you think it is?

יש טעות בתשובה. מה אתה חושב שזה?

The correct answer is: I haven't posted it yet.

התשובה הנכונה היא: עדיין לא פרסמתי את זה.

You must avoid using 'already' in a negative sentence.

עליך להימנע משימוש ב'כבר' במשפט שלילי.

Use 'yet' instead.

השתמש במקום זאת ב'עדיין'.

Now, a common question is: Can we use 'yet' in the question?

כעת, שאלה נפוצה היא: האם נוכל להשתמש ב'עדיין' בשאלה?

And the answer is yes! You can say:  Have you posted the package yet?

והתשובה היא כן! אתה יכול לומר: פרסמת את החבילה כבר?

So, is there a difference between using  'already' or 'yet' in the question?

אז האם יש הבדל בין שימוש ב- 'כבר' או 'עדיין' בשאלה?

Yes, there's a slight difference.

כן, יש הבדל קל.

When you ask a question with 'already' you usually expect a positive answer.

כשאתה שואל שאלה עם 'כבר', אתה בדרך כלל מצפה לתשובה חיובית.

Whereas, when you ask your  question with 'yet' you usually expect a negative answer.

בעוד שכשאתה שואל את השאלה שלך עם 'עדיין' אתה מצפה בדרך כלל לתשובה שלילית.

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.2.

ימין! בואו נסתכל על טעות נפוצה מס' 2.

Continuing the same dialogue, you say to the person:

בהמשך אותו דיאלוג, אתה אומר לאדם:

You promised to post the package yesterday. Have you posted it?

הבטחת לפרסם את החבילה אתמול. פרסמת את זה?

And they answer: No, I haven't still posted it.

והם עונים: לא, עדיין לא פרסמתי את זה.

There is a mistake in the answer. What do you think it is?

יש טעות בתשובה. מה אתה חושב שזה?

The mistake is in the position of 'still'.

הטעות היא בעמדה של 'דומם'.

When 'still' insists on a negation, it has to go before:

כש'עדיין' מתעקש על שלילה, זה חייב ללכת לפני:

No, I still haven't posted it.

לא, עדיין לא פרסמתי את זה.

Okay, let's put what we've learned so far into one dialogue. 

אוקיי, בואו נכניס את מה שלמדנו עד כה לדיאלוג אחד.

For example, someone says:

לדוגמה, מישהו אומר:

Have you booked the tickets yet?

האם כבר הזמנת את הכרטיסים?

No, I haven't booked them yet. I'll do it tomorrow.

לא, עדיין לא הזמנתי אותם. אני אעשה את זה מחר.

Right! It's now the next day, and the person says:

ימין! זה עכשיו למחרת, והאדם אומר:

I hope you've already booked the tickets.

אני מקווה שכבר הזמנת את הכרטיסים.

Oh, I'm sorry,  I still haven't booked them. I'll do it right now.

הו, אני מצטער, עדיין לא הזמנתי אותם. אני אעשה את זה מיד.

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.3.

ימין! בואו נסתכל על טעות נפוצה מס' 3.

Someone says: Have you ever been to Italy?

מישהו אומר: היית פעם באיטליה?

And the answer comes: Yes, I've ever been there.

והתשובה מגיעה: כן, אי פעם הייתי שם.

There is a mistake in the answer. What is it?

יש טעות בתשובה. מה זה?

We must not use 'ever' in the answer.

אסור לנו להשתמש ב'אי פעם' בתשובה.

The correct word to use here is 'already'.

המילה הנכונה לשימוש כאן היא 'כבר'.

Yes, I've already been there.

כן, כבר הייתי שם.

So, what's the negative answer to this question?

אז מה התשובה השלילית לשאלה הזו?

There are two possibilities you can use... 'ever' with a negative verb:

ישנן שתי אפשרויות שבהן אתה יכול להשתמש... 'אי פעם' עם פועל שלילי:

I haven't ever been there.

לא הייתי שם אף פעם.

Or, it's better to use 'never': I've never been there.

לחלופין, עדיף להשתמש ב'אף פעם': מעולם לא הייתי שם.

A question you might ask is: Can we use yet in this situation?

שאלה שאתה עשוי לשאול היא: האם אנחנו יכולים להשתמש עדיין במצב הזה?

The answer is... yes!

התשובה היא כן!

But, you change the connotation slightly.

אבל, אתה משנה מעט את הקונוטציה.

If someone says: Have you ever been to Italy? And you answer with 'yet':

אם מישהו אומר: היית פעם באיטליה? ואתה עונה ב'עדיין':

No, I haven't been there yet.

לא, עוד לא הייתי שם.

You mean that you're planning to visit Italy someday.

אתה מתכוון שאתה מתכנן לבקר באיטליה יום אחד.

Right! That's the end of this lesson.
