Today we're gonna bust out some awesome phrases

using 'keep'.

بستخدام "keep"

Now I know what you're thinking,

الان انا اعلم بماذا تفكر

this is a really common English verb

هذا حقاً فعل شائع في اللغه الانجليزيه

but we're going to focus on accuracy today,

لاكن اليوم نحن سوف نركز على الدقه

using these phrases correctly.

بستخدام هذة العبارات بشكل صحيح

So we'll practise some common collocations,

سوف نمارس مجموعه شائعه من

words that are often used together with 'keep'.

الكلمات التى تستخدم احيانا مع بعضها مع "keep"

And if you're wondering why that's a good idea,

و اذا كنت تتعجب لماذا هى فكرة جيده

it's a good idea to practise words together,

انها فكرة رائعه لممارسه الكلمات مع بعضها

well, because learning words together in chunks

حسنا بسب تعلم الكلمات مع بعضها ككتله واحده

is going to help you to sound more natural

when you speak.

You'll be using words exactly as native speakers

انت سوف تستخدم الكلمات تماما كالمتحدثين المحليين للغه

do when they speak not as Google Translate tells you to,

عندما يتحدثون ليس كما يفعل مترجم google

which often sounds really unnatural and strange.

الذي في كثير من الاحيان يبدو غير طبيعي و غريب

So everybody keep calm, stay focused.

حسنا الجميع يبقى هادئ و مركز

You're about to learn fifteen common collocations

انت بصدد تعلم خمس عشر تعابير شائعه

with 'keep'.

مع "keep"

Now the verb 'keep' has two main uses.

الان الفعل "keep" لديه استخدامين اساسيين

Firstly, we use it to explain that

اولا نحن نستخدمه لي شرح

we have or we retain possession of something

نحن نملك او نحتفظ بحيازة شئ ما

and that's why it's often used with the noun 'secret'

و لهذا السبب غالبا يستخدم مع الاسم "سر"

or 'promise'.

او "وعد"

So you need to retain possession of that secret, right?

اذا انت يجب ان تحتفظ بهذا السر , صحيح ؟

And not share it with anyone else.

ولا تشاركه مع اي شخص اخر

My friend just told me that she's pregnant

صديقتي اخبرتني انها حامل

but she doesn't want anyone else to know yet.

ولاكنها لاتريد ان يعرف اي شخص حتى الآن

I don't know how I'll keep it a secret!

انا لا اعرف كيف سوف احفظه سرا

Or we can say: I don't know how I'll keep her secret!

او لنقول : انا لا اعرف كيف سوف احافظ على سرها

You said you'd arrive by Monday.

انت قلت انك سوف تصل يوم الاثنين.

I just hope that you can keep your promise.

انا ارجو انك سوف تحافظ على وعدك

We need you here.

نحن نحتاجك هنا

We also keep something safe

نحن ايضا نحافظ على شئ

and this means to look after it, right?

و هذا يعني ان ترعاه , صحيح

To look after something.

ان تعتني بشئ.

When I was back home in Melbourne over Christmas,

عندما عدت لى منزلي في "مالبون" خلال أعياد الميلاد

my mum pulled out my primary school uniform.

امي اخرجت لي زي مدرستي الابتدائيه

She'd been keeping it safe all these years.

كانت تحافظ عليه كل هذة السنين

I had no idea.

ليس لدي فكرة.

Keep it somewhere safe

احتفظ بها في مكان آمن

so you know where to find it when you need it/

بالتالي انت تعلم اين تجدها اذا احتجت لها

Do you have something that you're keeping safe

هل لديك شئ ما تحتفظ به

right now?

الان ؟

What about 'keep in mind'

ماذا عن "keep in mind"

which has quite a literal meaning, you know.

الذي له معنى حرفي تمامًا ، كما تعلم

You keep something in your mind, you remember it,

انت تحتفظ بشئ ما في عقلك , انت تتذكرة

right, until you need it.

صحيح , حتى تحتاجه

So when you get some helpful advice from someone

بالتالي عندما تحصل على نصيحه مفيدة من شخص ما

you can say: Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

يمكنك قول : شكرا , سوف اضعها في اعتباري.

Keep in mind that there are five vegetarians

ضع في اعتبارك ان هناك خمس اشخاص نباتيين

coming for dinner

قادمون للعشاء

so we may need to prepare their meals separately.

بالتالي نحن بحاجه الى ان نجهز وجباتهم بشكل منفصل

Hopefully, you keep a few of these expressions

امل , انك سوف تحتفظ ببعض من هذة التعابير

in mind so that you can use them later.

في عقلك بحيث يمكنك ان تستخدمهم في وقت لاحق

'Keep' can also mean to remain in a certain condition

"keep"يمكن ايضا ان تعني البقاء في حاله معينه

or position which is why we always say:

او وضع وهذا هو السبب الذي نقول به دائما :

Keep quiet!

اللزم الصمت

Remain quiet.

ابقى هادئ

Ben kept quiet while she explained what had happened.

حافظ (بين) على الهدوء بينما شرحت ماحدث

And 'Keep away!'

و "keep away"

'Keep away' means to stay or remain at that distance.

"keep away" تعني البقاء على هذا البعد

Keep away from the sand dunes,

ابتعد من الكثبان الرمليه

there are snakes in there!

هنالك ثعابين فيها

Now if you're advising someone or you're warning them,

الان اذا كنت تنصح احدهم او تحذرة

you can use

يمكنك استخدام

'Keep your distance'

"keep your distance"

When the monkeys started fighting, the ranger told us

عندما تبداء القردة بالعراك يخبرنا الحارس

to keep our distance.

ان نبقى على مسافه

And of course, you can tell someone that you want to

و بالطبع , يمكنك ان تخبر شخص ما انك تريد ان

remain in contact with them by saying: Keep in touch.

تبقى على اتصال معه بقول : "keep in touch"

Keep in touch.

Now this is usually with someone who you don't

الان هذا عاده مايكون مع شخص انت لا

see very often and as you're leaving you might say:

تراه غالبا و انت مغادر يمكنك قول :

Well, it was great bumping into you.

حسنا لقد كانت فرصه عظيمه ان اقابلك

Let's keep in touch.

لنبقى على تواصل

'Keep up'

keep up

or 'keep up with' is a really handy phrasal verb,

او "keep up with" هي حقا فعل مركب سهل الاستخدام

especially if you're falling behind

خاصة إذا كنت متأخر في فهمك

and there's a couple of meanings.

وهنالك معنيين

You can use it when you're

يمكنك استخدامه عندما تكون

falling behind in your understanding.

متأخر في تفهمك

It's really hard to keep up with native speakers

انه حقاً صعب ان تجاري المتحدثين المحليين للغه

when they speak at natural pace.

عندما يتحدثون بالوتيرة الطبيعيه

Or if you're walking with someone who's really slow,

او عندما تسير مع شخص جداً بطيئ

you might say:

يمكنك قول:

Come on, keep up!

هيا , الحقني

They're physically far behind so you can use 'keep up'

وهو فعليا خلفك بكثير بالتالي يمكنك قول "keep up"

in a physical sense as well.

في المعني المادي كذلك

Okay so there are a heap of expressions using 'keep'

حسنًا ، فهناك مجموعة من التعبيرات تستخدام "keep"

that we use to help get organised and stay informed.

التي نستخدمها للمساعدة في الحصول على التنظيم والبقاء على اطلاع

We keep track of things, we keep tabs on stuff.

نحن نتتبع الأشياء ، ونحن نبقي علامات التبويب على الأشياء.

We keep people posted and we keep up to date.

نبقى الناس على اطلاع و نكون مواكبين

These are just a few.

هذا فقط قليل

So let's take a look at a few examples.

دعنا نلقى نظرة على بعض الامثله

'To keep track of something' has

"To keep track of something " لديها

two different meanings actually,

في الحقيقه معنيين مختلفين

تعتمد على اذا ما كان هذا الشئ جسم مادي

depending on whether that something is a physical

object or it's information.

او كانت معلومات

If it's a physical object, then keeping track of it

اذا كان جسم مادي , اذا تتبعه

means that you know where it is.

يعنى انك تعرف اين هو

I'm sorry, I am listening to you.

انا اسف , انا استمع لك

I'm just trying to keep track of where my kids have gone.

انا فقط احاول ان اتتبع اين ذهب اطفالي

Now if you're not talking about a physical thing,

اذا كنت لا تتحدث عن شئ مادي

like your kids, then 'keeping track of it'

كطفالك اذا , "keeping track of it"

means that you're staying informed.

تعني انك على اطلاع

You've got up-to-date information

انت تحصل على اخر المعلومات

and it's really clear in your mind.

وهي واضحه جدا في عقلك

I use Google Calendar to keep track of all of my

انا استخدم تقويم google لتتبع

appointments and meetings.

كل المواعيد والاجتماعات

To keep tabs on someone or something,

To keep tabs على شخص او شئ ما

it's similar to keeping track of them

هي مشابهه لتتبعهم

but it means to watch something or someone carefully,

لاكن تعني ان تراقب شئ او شخص ما بعنايه ،

to monitor their activity, to keep an eye on things.

تراقب نشاطهم , ان تتابع الاشياء

I try to keep tabs on my bank account

انا احاول ان اراقب حسابي البنكي

so that I don't spend too much.

بالتالي لا انفق كثيرا

If you're anything like me you like to feel organised

اذا كانت كل اشيائك مثلي هل تحب ان تشعر بالتنظيم

and you like to have everything under control.

و تود ان تجعل كل شئ تحت السيطرة

Is that what you're like?

هل هذا ما تحبه .

Anyway,

على كل حال,

we can use 'keep with on top of' to say exactly that.

يمكنا ان نستخدم 'keep with on top of' لقول بالضبط هذا

I like to keep on top of things, most often it's used in this

انا احب هذا بالضبط من الأشياء، في معظم الأحيان تستخدم في

really general way with things.

الحقيقه بشكل عام مع الأشياء

But you can make it a little bit more specific by saying

لاكن يمكنك أن تجعلها أكثر تحديدا بقول

something like:

شئ مثل :

I like to keep on top of all my admin tasks at work.

انا احب انا ابقى على إطلاع بكل مهامي الاداريه

I do a little bit every day.

انا أفعلها قليلا كل يوم

So as I said earlier we use 'keep' in expressions

بالتالي كمان قلت مسبقا نحن نستخدم "keep" في التعابير

when we want to have all of the information

عندما نريد ان نحصل على كل المعلومات

about something.

عن شئ

For example, we like to keep up to date, don't we?

على سبيل المثال نحن نحب ان نواكب، اليس كذلك ؟

Some people read the news every morning

بعض الاشخاص يقرا الاخبار كل صباح

to keep up to date with world affairs.

لمواكبه الشؤون العالميه

Do you like to keep up to date with world affairs?

هل تحب ان تواكب الشوؤن العالميه ؟

I do but I don't read the news every day.

انا افعل لاكن لا اقراء الاخبار كل يوم

Most of the time the stories feel like they're quite

في معظم الأوقات ، تشعر القصص بأنها كثيرا

negative, you know, all of the negative things

سالبه , انت تعلم , كل الاشياء السلبيه

from around the world and I start feeling

من كل انحاء العالم و بدات اشعر

really depressed.

حقا بالاكتئاب.

But I have a friend who's a journalist and she usually

لاكن لدي صديقة صحفيه وهي في العادة

keeps me posted if there are any major stories breaking.

تجعلني على اطلاع اذا كان هناك قصص كبيرة عاجله

الان يمكن استخدام التعبير عندما تدع

Now you can use this expression when you're letting

someone know that you'll give them updated

شخص ما يعرف انك سوف تجعله يواكب

information as soon as you receive it.

المعلومات بمجرد حصولك عليها

It sounds a little bit formal right but this expression

تبدو رسميه قليلا صحيح لاكن هذا التعبير

can actually be used all of the time,

حقيقه يمكن أن يستخدم في كل وقت

you know, if you're trying to organise dinner with friends

انت تعلم ، إذا اردت ان تنظم عشاء مع الاصدقاء

and one of them may need to work late

و واحد منهم ربما بحاجه ان يعمل لوقت متأخر

or they can't get a babysitter

او لا يستطيع الحصول على جليس اطفال

and they're unsure if they can come, you could say:

وهم غير متأكدين اذا كانو يستطيعوا المجيء يجب أن تقول :

No worries, but keep me posted.

لا مشكله ، لاكن اجعلني على إطلاع

I may need to change our booking.

ربما احتاج لتغير حجزنا

A more formal way of saying this exact same thing is

أكثر طريقه رسميه لقول هذا بالضبط نفس الشئ هي

'Keep me informed'.

"Keep me informed "

So this expression is more appropriate in the workplace

هذا التعبير أكثر ملائمه في أماكن العمل

and it's a little too formal to use with friends.

و هو أيضا قليل الرسميه باستخدامه مع الاصدقاء

Talking about a product order for the clothing company

التحدث عن طلب منتج لشركه الملابس

that you work for, you might say to your boss:

التي تعمل لها ، يمكنك القول لرئيسك:

I'll make sure that you're kept informed

سوف احرص على أن تظل على علم

if there are any substantial changes

اذا حدث اي تغير ضروري

to the shipment or the delivery dates.

للشحنه او مواعيد التوصيل

So you're letting your boss know

بالتالي تجعل رئيسك يعلم

that you can deal with the problem

انك تستطيع التعامل مع المشكله

but you'll definitely update them and share

ولكنك بالتأكيد سوف تطلعه و تشارك

important information with them.

المعلومات المهمه معه
