Will vs Be Going To vs Present Continuous: Talk About the Future in English (Jack Explains)

we're going to look at the difference between

سوف ننظر الفرق بين

will, be going to, and the present continuous

سوف و be going to , المضارع المستمر

when talking about the future.

Let's start with three examples.

دعونا نبدا بثلاثه امثله

I will get my hair cut, I will get my hair cut.

سوف اقص شعري.شوف اقص شعري

I'm going to get my hair cut, I'm going to get my hair cut.

انا ذاهب لقص شعري

I am getting my hair cut, I am getting my hair cut.

انا هقص شعري

Will, be going to, and the present continuous.

سوف,يكون going to والمضارع المستمر

All three are used to talk about the future.

الثلاثه امثله استخدمت للتعبير عن المستقبل

It's difficult to know in which situations

انه صعب لنعرف اي موقف

do you use will or be going to or the present continuous

هل يستخدم willاو be going to او المضارع المستمر

but by the end of this lesson you will have

لكن في النهايه و في هذا الدرس

a clear understanding of when to use these three tenses.

ستفهم بكل وضوح متي تستخدم هذه الازمنه الثلاثه

So, let's get started with a story.

لذا هيا بنا نبدا القصه

Imagine that we decide to throw a party.

تخيل اننا قررنا ان نقيم حفله

That we decide to have a party for one of our friends.

ان نحن قررنا ان نقيم حفله لواحد من اصدقنا

And we all need to bring something to the party.

و نحن جميعا نحتاج لجلب بعض الاشياء للحفله

We all need to contribute something for this event.

نحن جميعا نحتاج لنساهم من اجل هذا الحدث

Because I'm an expert when it comes to beer I say,

لان انا حبير عندما يتعلق الامر بالبيره لذا انا اقول

Okay, I'll bring some beer.

حسنا انا ساحضلر بعض البيره

I'll bring some beer to the party.

انا ساحضر بعض البيره للحفله

You say, I'll bring, complete that sentence.

انت تقول انا ساجلب.كمل الجمله

I'll bring, maybe you said some food,

انا ساجلب ربما تكون قلت بعض الطعام

or I'll bring some chips or I'll bring a cake.

او انا ساجلب بعض الرقائق او الكيك

But we both used will to talk about this.

لكن كلنا استخدمنا willلتحدث ع هذا

And that is because we made the decision to bring beer

لاننا في هذا اتخذنا قرار جلب البيره

or a cake in the moment of speaking.

او الكيك في لحظه عندما نتحدث

We didn't have the intention to do this before

لم تكن لدينا النيه مسبقه لفعل هذه

the conversation and that's one of the ways we use will.

المحادثه و هذه واحده من الطرق لاستخدام will

When we make the decision to do something

عند اتحاذ القرار لفعل شي

in the future while we are speaking.

في المستقيل بينما نتحدث

Here are some more examples to make that clearer.

هنا امثله اكثر لجعل ذلك اوضح

My wife and I are sitting on the sofa,

زوجتي و انا حالسين علي الكنبه

it's 7 PM, the kids are in bed, and my wife says,

الساعه السابعه,و الاطفال نايمين زوجتي تقول

let's watch Stranger Things, let's watch Stranger Things.

دعنا نشاهد شيئا اغرب

I'll say, great I'll make some tea, I'll make some tea.

انا ساقول جيدا انا ساحضر بعض الشاي,انا ساحضر بعض الشاي

I didn't have the intention to make tea before

لم تكن لديه نيه مسبقه لتحضير الشاي

we had that conversation, the decision to make tea

كان لدينا المحادثه,القرار لجلب الشاي

was made during that conversation.

اتخذ اثناء هذه المحادثه

It doesn't matter if that future action

ليس مهم لو ان حدث المستقبل

is in the immediate future or the distant future.

في المستقبل الحالي او البعيد

For example, let's say that you are in a meeting

علي سبيل المثال,دعونا نقول انك في اجتماع

and your boss says okay, we need somebody to give

و مديرك يقول حسنا, نحن نحتاج شخص

a presentation at the big conference next year.

للتمثيل في مؤتمر كبير العام القادم

And you say, I'll do it, I'll do it.

وانت تقول انا سافعل, انا سافعل

Again, you didn't have the intention

مره اخري, لم تكن هناك نيه

to give this presentation before the meeting.

مسبقه للتمثيل قبل الاجتماع

You made that decision while speaking.

اتخذت القرار بينما نتحدث

So far the examples are, I'll bring the drinks,

حتي الان هذه الامثله, انا ساجلب الشراب

I'll bring a cake, I'll make some tea, I'll do it.

ساجلب الكيك,ساحضر الشاي,سافعل

Going back to the example about the party.

ارجه الي مثال الحفله

Later that day you see a friend

لاحقا ان اليوم لتري صديق

and he asks you about this party.

و يسالك عن الحفله

And you say, yeah, it's going to be great.

وانت تقول نعم سيكون عظيم

Jack is going to bring some beer,

جاك سيجلب البيره

Jack is going to bring some beer.

جاك سيجلب البيره

The intention of bringing beer was

نيه جلب البيره موجوده مسبقا

made before that conversation.

انه اتخذ قرار جلب البيره قبل هذه المحادثه

Therefore, we can't use will.

لذلك لايمكن استخدام will

We need to either use be going to,

نحتاج اما نستخدم be going to

or the present continuous.

او نستخم المضارع المستمر

And at this stage it's important to know

و في هذه المرحله مهم ان نعرف

that be going to and the present continuous can be flexible.

ان be going to و المضارع المستمر يمكن ان يكون مرن

And in fact, in many situations you can use both

و في الحقيقه في العديد من المواقف ممكن ان نستخدم كلايهما be going to او المضارع المستمر

with more or less the same meaning.

بالكثر او اقل نفس المعني

So you can say, Jack is bringing some beer to the party.

لذا نستطيع ان نقول جاك يجلب البير الي الحفله

Jack is bringing some beer to the party.

جاك سيجلب البير الي الحفله

Before I said to my wife, I'll make some tea,

من قبل انا قلت لزوجتي ساحضر بعض الشاي

I'll make some tea but look at this example.

انا ساحضر بعض الشاي لكن انظر الي هذا المثال

I'm going to make some coffee.

ساحضر القهوه

Do you want some?

هل تريد

I'm going to make some coffee.

ساحضر بعض القهوه

Do you want some?

هل تريد

The intention to make coffee was

النيه لتحضير القهوه كانت

there before I asked that question.

موجوده قبل انا اسال هذا السؤال

I already had that intention,

النيه بالفعل كانت موجوده

therefore, I don't use will.

لذا انا لان استخدم will

I didn't make the decision to do that in the moment.

لم اتخذ القرار لفعل هذا في الحظه

I'm going to make some coffee.

انا ساحضر بعضا من القهوه

Do you want some?

هل تريد القهوه

Going back to the example of the presentation.

ساعود الي مثال التقديم

In the meeting you said, I'll do it, I'll do it.

في الاجتماع انا قولت ,انا سافعل.انا سافعل

But imagine later that day you meet

ولكن تخيل في وقت لاحق ان اليوم انت قابلت

one of your friends at the pub.

احد من اصدقائك في الحانه

You say, I'm going to give a big presentation next month.

انت تقول انا ساقدم عرضا كبيرا الشهر القادم

I'm going to give a big presentation next month.

انا ساقدم عرضا كبيرا الشهر القادم

Now, when we're talking about our plans

الان.عندما نتحدث عن خطتنا

and arrangements and intentions for the future

و الترتيبات و النوايا للمستقبل

we normally use be going to or the present continuous.

نحن من الطبيعي نستخدم be going to او المضارع المستمر

I've talked about a few examples of how we use will

انا قد تحدثت في الامثله السابقه حول كيفيه استخدام will

but in most cases we use be going to and the

ولكن معظم الحالات نستخدم be going to و

present continuous because we normally know our plans

المضارع المستمر لان لان من الطبيعي اننا نعرف خطتنا

and intentions before the conversation.

و النوايا قبل المحدثه

But what is the difference between

ولكن ما الفرق بين

be going to and the present continuous?

المضارع المستمرbe going to

Well, the present continuous is mainly

حسنا المضارع المستمر بشكل رئيسي

used for arrangements and in most cases

استخدامنا المضارع المستمر من اجل الترتيبات و معظم الحالات

there is a specific time and date for this.

يوجد وقت محدد وتاريخ محدد لهذا

For example I have a football game at 3 PM on Sunday.

علي سبيل المثال انا لدي مباره كره قدم في الساعه 3مساء يوم الاحد

A friend asks me if I want to

صديق يسالني لوانا اريد

go to his party on Sunday afternoon.

الذهاب الي حفلته يوم الاحد ظهرا

I say, I'm so sorry I can't go,

انا اقول انا اسف جدا لا استطيع الذهاب

I'm playing football at 3 PM.

انا هالعب مباره كره القدم الساعه 3 مساء

It's an arrangement, it's a plan with a

انه ترتيب.انه خطه مه

specific time and date.

تاريخ وموعد محدد

I'm playing football at 3 PM.

انا هالعب مباره كره القدم الساعه 3 مساء

Another example is I have an appointment

مثال اخر انا لدي موعد

at 10 AM on Tuesday at the hairdressers.

في العاشره صباحا يوم الثلاثاء في صالون الحلاقه

Here, I would say, I'm getting my hair cut on Tuesday.

هنا انا ساقول انا هاقص شعري يوم الثلاثاء

I'm getting my hair cut on Tuesday.

انا هاقص شعري يوم الثلاثاء

But if you don't have a set plan or an arrangement

لكن اذا لو لم يكن لدي خطه او ترتيب

then we tend to use be going to.

و لديك النيه لنستخدم be going to

For example, I'm going to get my hair cut soon.

مثال انا ساذهب لقص شعري قريبا

I'm going to get my hair cut soon.

انا ساذهب لقص شعري قريبا

In this example, I don't have an appointment.

في هذا المثال انا ليس لدي موعد

But it's my intention to get my hair cut.

لكن نيتي لقص شعري

I'm going to get my hair cut soon.

انا ساذهب لقص شعري قريبا

And here's a conversation where

و هنا المحادثه حيث

we can use this example with will.

نحن نستطيع استخدام هذا المثال مع will

My wife says Jack, your hair is bloody awful,

وزوجتي تقول.شعرك دموي فظيع

you hair is bloody awful.

شعرك دموي فظيع

I say, what do you mean?

انا اقول ماذا تعني

Kate says, there's just no style to it, it looks terrible.

كيت تقول لا يوجد تسريحه لشعرك يبدو شعرك سئ

I say, wow, okay, I'll get it cut soon.

انا اقول حسنا انا سوف اقص شعري قريبا

Notice that the intention to get my hair cut

لاحظ ان النيه لقص شعري موجوده

wasn't there before the conversation.

لكن لم تكن هناك نيه فبل المحادثه

I made the decision to do this during the conversation.

اتخذت القرار لفعل هذا خلال المحادثه

That's why I use will.

هذا لماذا نستخدم will

So going back to the three examples

لذا سنعود الي الثلاث امثله السابقه

I gave at the start of the video.

الذي اعطيتها في بدايه الفيديو

I'll get my hair cut soon.

انا ساقص شعري قريبا

I'm going to get my hair cut soon.

انا ساذهب لقص شعري قريبا(going to)

I'm getting my hair cut on Tuesday.

انا هاقص شعري يوم الثلاثاء (present continuous )

The first one, the intention is there

المثال الاول النيه موجوده

but I made the decision during the conversation.

ولكن اتخذت القرار اثناء المحادثه

The second one, the intention is there

المثال الثاني النيه موجوده

but I already decided to do this before the conversation.

لكن بالفعل انا اتخذت القرار لفعل هذا قبل المحادثه

And the last one is an arrangement.

و في المثال الاخير الترتيب

I have the appointment, I'm getting my hair cut on Tuesday.

انا لدي موعد انا هاقص شعري يوم الثلاثاء (present continuous)

So that is the main difference between

لذا ان الفرق الرئيسي بين

will, be going to, and the present continuous.

will,be going to, present continuous

Let's look at a few more examples using be going to.

لنري الان عدد قليل اكثر من الامثله نستخدم going to

And some very specific cases when we use this.

وبعض الحالات محدده جدا عندما نستخدم هذا

The first one is I'm going to mow the lawn this weekend.

المثال الاول انا ساذهب لجز العشب هذه العطله

Now, when it comes to these types of activities

الان عندما ننظر لهذه الانواع من الانشطه

we tend to use be going to.

نحن نميل لاستخدام be going to

Because we don't make arrangements with people to do this.

لان لايوج ترتيب مع الاشخاص لفعل هذا

I'm going to mow the lawn this weekend.

انا ساذهب لجز العشب هذه العطله (be going to)

We're going to clean the house on Sunday.

نحن سننظف المنزل يوم الاحد(be going to)

I'm going to do my homework tonight.

انا ساقوم بعمل الواجب المنزلي الليله

These are types of activities

هذه الانواع من الانشطه

where we tend to use be going to.

حيث اننا نميل لاستخدام (be going to)

Let's talk about predictions now.

الان نتحدث عن التنبواءت

Because when we are predicting the future

لان عند التنبوء بالمستقبل

we can use either will or be going to.

نستطيع اما نستخدم will او be going to

For example, when we're talking about our party,

علي سبيل المثال, عندما نتحدث عن حفلتنا

I think Paul is going to come,I think Paul is going to come.

اعتقد ان بول سياتي , انا اعتقد بول سيأتي(be going to)

Or, I think Paul will come, I think Paul will come.

او انا اعتقد بول سيأتي, انا اعتقد بول سيأتي)will)

But if you are basing your prediction

لكن اذاعلي اساس توقعاتك

on current evidence then use be going to.

علي دليل الان لذا نستخدم (be going to)

The example that many of your have seen before is this,

مثال, قد رايت العديد من قبل هذا

Look at that black cloud!

انظر السحاب مغيمه

It's going to rain!

ستمطر

The black cloud is the evidence

السحاب مغيمه هو الدليل

that we are using for our prediction.

يستخدم لتوقعتنا

Look at that black cloud!

انظر ان السحاب مغيمه

It's going to rain!

ستمطر

Or Mike Tyson looks so focused.

او مايك تيسون يبدو مركز جدا

He's going to knock out the other guy soon!

هو سيضرب رجل اخر قريبا

He's going to knock out the other guy soon!

هو سيضرب رجل اخر قريبا

We can also use both be going to

نستطيع ايضا استخدام كلا من(be going to)

and will in the first conditional.

و (will) في الحاله الاولي

For example, if it rains, we'll cancel the party.

علي سبيل المثال, لو مطرت, سوف نلغي الحفله

If it rains, we'll cancel the party.

لو مطرت, سنلغي الحفله(will)

Or if it rains, we're going to cancel the party.

او لو مطرت,سنلغي الحفله(be going to)

If it rains, we're going to cancel the party.

لو مطرت,سنلغي الحفله(be going to)

I want to end on three examples

اريد ان انهي الثلاثه امثله

that are used very specifically.

استخداما علي وجه التحديد

The first one is this.

المثال الاول هو هذا

What are you doing tomorrow?

ماذا ستفعل غدا؟

What are you doing tomorrow?

ماذا ستفعل غدا؟

This is what we ask when we're trying to find out

هذا ما نسال عندما نحاول معرفه

somebody's availability so we can suggest something.

امكانيه اح الاشخاص لذلك نستطيع اقتراح شئ ما

Let's say we have a party tomorrow which we do, you can say.

دعونا نقول نحن لدينا حفله غدا الذي نقوم به, انت تستطيع قول

What are you doing tomorrow?

ماذا سنفعل غدا؟

Do you want to come to this great party?

هل تريد القدوم لهذه الحفله العظيمه؟

You'll notice we use the present continuous to do this.

سنلاحظ اننا نستخدم المضارع المستمر لفعل هذا

What are you doing Sunday morning?

ماذا ستفعل صباح يوم الاحد؟

The next one is this.

التالي هو

You might here your boss say,

انت ربما هنا مديريك يقول

okay everyone, I'll be in the office tomorrow.

حسنا جميعا,انا ساكون في المكتب غدا

Or okay everyone, I won't be in the office tomorrow.

او حسنا جميعا انا لن اكون في المكتب غدا

The boss uses will here to talk about a future fact.

المدير يستخدم ساكون هنا للحديث عن حقيقه في المستقبل

Here are two more examples.

هنا مثالين اخرين

I'll be in London this time next week.

انا ساكون في لندن في هذا الوقت الاسبوع القادم

I'll be in London this time next week.

نا ساكون في لندن في هذا الوقت الاسبوع القادم

They'll be on the plane this time tomorrow.

هما سيكونوا في الطائره في هذا الوقت غدا

They'll be on the plane this time tomorrow.

هما سيكونوا في الطائره في هذا الوقت غدا

And finally, Let's introduce another tense here.

واخيرا,اقدم لكم ازمنه اخر هنا

The train gets in a 7 AM, the train gets in a 7 AM.

يتحرك القطار في السابعه صباحا.يتحرك القطار في السابعه صباحا

This is a present simple.

هذا المضارع البسيط

And we can use the present simple

نستطيع استخدام المضارع البسيط

to talk about the future too.

لنتحدث ايضا عن زمن المستقبل

This is for things on a schedule or a time table.

وهذا يستخدم المستقبل للحديث عن الاشياء التي تكون في جدول المواعيد

The train gets in a 7 AM, it's on a schedule.

يغادر القطار في السابعه صباحا

Another example is I leave tomorrow at 7 AM.

مثال اخر انا هغادر غدا في السابعه صباحا

I leave tomorrow at 7 AM.

انا ساغادر في السابعه صباحا

I'm taking a flight, which is why I'm using it in this way.

انا اتحدث عن رحله طيران ولذلك لماذا انا استخدمت المضارع البسيط في هذا المثال

I leave tomorrow at 7 AM.

انا ساغادر غدا في السابعه صباحا

And finally, what time does the lesson start?

و اخيرا, متي يبدا الدرس؟

What time does the lesson start?

متي يبدا الدرس؟

So, we have covered a lot in this lesson.

لذا, قد شرحت هذا الدرس باستفاضه

And finally, know that this is not easy.

و اخيرا اعرف انا هذا ليس سهلا

It's going to take you a long time to truly

سياخذ وقتا طويلا

understand when to use will,

لكي تفهمه تماما عندما تستخدم will

be going to, and the present continuous.

be going to وpresent continuous
